NAIDOC WEEK

VOICE. TREATY. TRUTH.

Peace to this house and all who dwell within.

Prayer for Reconciliation

God of all creation, as we journey together in this Great Southern Land, we pray for healing, forgiveness and unity, creating a path of good will, with justice and compassion. Jesus, through the power of your love, you have given us the courage, wisdom and strength to share our gifts and talents in humility. In peace and understanding we reconcile with each other. Creator Spirit, we come together in prayer and thanksgiving for the many blessings we have received. Allow your Spirit to wash over us and give us strength to walk together as one.

Amen.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK – CHRIS BARTLETT Welcome back to the first week of Term 3 to all families, students and staff at Mater Dei. I trust that all of you took the opportunity to relax away from the rigour of the school week and refresh for the new learnings of the semester. It is important to remember teaching and learning is a shared partnership between home and school. As parents we are seen as the primary educators of our children and by this we are the chief decision makers of the type of schooling our children receive. At Mater Dei we strive to give every student a chance to grow their learning every year and come to an understanding of what Jesus means to them. We enable these learnings through the Visible Learner

Project, religious lessons & liturgies, specialist lesson, community outreach and the promotion of our school values and beliefs. We truly have a great school where learning is the primary focus. In my recent travels and interactions with peers from across the state, I believe we do this better than other schools. It is a privilege to work at Mater Dei and the exciting work our teachers are doing in the classrooms proves this to me every time I step into a classroom. We should be very grateful to be part of such an excellent place of learning and community. Have a great term.

I had the pleasure of attending Fr Tom Duncan’s ordination last night amid a strong representation of priests, bishops,

parishioners, TCSO staff and other diocesan families. It was fantastic to see such happiness and satisfaction on his face as

his ordination was completed. Tom completed his deaconship in St Theresa’s and Highfields Parishes, and is known well

by our students and staff. Tom grew up Miles and attended his secondary schooling at Marist Brothers Ashgrove before

studying to be a Priest. One of Tom’s first duties will be to return to his home town of Miles and celebrate his first Mass

with parishioners, his family and friends. Eventually he will work out of St Patrick’s Cathedral in service to the parish and

St Saviours Primary School and College. We wish him every blessing in his chosen vocation and thank him for his work in

our community. Congratulations Fr Tom.

FROM THE AP’S DESK – JULIE HENDERSON

Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change – Brené Brown

In working with students from

two different year levels in

small group or whole class

reading lessons this week, it is

evident that our students are

becoming more willing to talk

about their learning, show their vulnerability by

asking questions to clarify understanding,

appreciate the opportunities of errors and persist

when faced with challenges. Growth in student

capacity is supported through use of the Gradual

Release of Responsibility Model. As illustrated in the diagram below, the cognitive load involved in the learning task moves

progressively from teacher modelling and thinking aloud through a series of phases that enable students to collaborate

initially with teachers and then with peers to build confidence and independence. The process is not linear, but instead

dynamic and responsive to feedback that teachers give students about their progress and that students provide teachers

about their teaching. Teachers are sharing the learning agenda with students through Learning Intention and Success

Criteria and making the links between information gained from assessment tasks to next steps in learning more explicit

for students. Clarity about the learning for students is directly related to the increased clarity our teachers gain through

discussions in their professional learning team meetings and planning sessions.

Deacon Tom’s Ordination Last night at St Patrick’s cathedral our Deacon, Tom Duncan was ordained as a priest. This was a significant celebration in Tom’s faith journey and was attended by bishops from across the Queensland dioceses, as well as many, many priests too. Father Tom was joined by his family from Miles and friends from all the communities he has been working in throughout his preparations for this special occasion. Our sincere congratulations Father Tom!

Reconciliation This weekend 42 of our year 3 students will be attending our parish masses with their families and friends to take the very first step in preparing for their sacraments of initiation in the Catholic church. These First Reconciliation candidates will take part in a commitment ceremony as a symbol of their pledge to continue their faith journey towards this special celebration.

Next week, these candidates will begin working in their family groups and will meet each week to engage together and learn more about the sacrament of Reconciliation. As a school community all at Mater Dei look forward to supporting you on your faith journey throughout the coming months.

NAIDOC Liturgy During the holiday’s communities all around Australia celebrated NAIDOC week which began with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday on July 7th. The theme this year is VOICE. TREATY. TRUTH. Yesterday as a school community we acknowledged this significant celebration with a liturgy. This was a wonderful opportunity to officially share the story of the mural which has been taking shape on the terrace of our Good Samaritan building. We sincerely thank the Bartlett family, particularly Hayden, (@kikbac.art) for this amazing piece which represents our Mater Dei story throughout time on this land, focusing on the learning circles which we are all part of. LET'S WORK TOGETHER FOR A SHARED FUTURE

Mini-Disco for Careen On Tuesday June 25th during lunchtime the year four classes lead our Term 2 fundraiser for Careen with a Mini-Disco in the William Morris Centre. Entry was a gold coin and the disco was a wonderful success. Thanks to everyone’s generous donations $246.45 was raised towards our sponsorship for Careen’s education at St Jude’s in Tanzania. Together, we honoured Careen’s learning, her aspirations and her dreams for a better life. Great effort Mater Dei!

SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION

CATHOLIC EDUCATION EXCELLENCE AWARDS Last year was the inaugural year for the Toowoomba Catholic Schools Excellence Awards. This year the event will be held

again on the evening of Thursday 1st August.

We sent in 5 nominations for the excellence awards and have 4 nominations that have been shortlisted in the following

categories, to attend the finalists dinner and presentation.

• Early career teacher (0-3 years) Chloe Lobegeier

• Primary expert teacher Joanne Cavanagh

• Professional Learning Community (PLC) Angela Martlew – on behalf of the Visible Learner Team

• Teaching and Learning Support Anne Woodcroft-Brown

Each category has a number of criteria that nominations have to be written against. We are very excited to have this

many nominations shortlisted as it reflects some great practice and talent in our school. We are looking forward to the

event and are hopeful we can win the categories we are representing.

JIN AI HIGH SCHOOL – JAPANESE STUDENTS VISIT Next week we will host five Japanese students from Jin Ai High School, Fukui City. The students visit as part of a study

tour to immerse themselves in Australian culture and will arrive on Tuesday night. The girls will have some integration in

classes with our Year 6 students and well as special lessons in their own group. They will also access an indigenous

workshop as well as excursions around the main attractions in the South East corner of the state. We thank the five

families who are assisting with hosting the students, and wish them an invaluable learning experience.

MACKENZIE STREET A number of students are unsupervised and waiting outside the school grounds waiting for parents to arrive for pick up

along MacKenzie St. We will be moving these students back to the PJ Doyle area to be supervised until a parent arrives

for pick up. Please note this will cause some short term delay in your pick up to maximise the safety of students during a

busy time of the day.

There is a no parking zone extending 15m from the supervised crossing heading South. This zone is being used for parking,

especially at pick up time. The zone is no parking because it limits the vision of the crossing supervisor and pedestrians

using the crossing. We are currently working with council to find a permanent solution to stop parking in the zone. In the

meantime, large witches hats will be positioned there to reinforce the no parking message.

We acknowledge the vast majority of families who are respectful of the road rules and procedures the school has in place.

We need everyone to be on board with safety around the school grounds at drop off and pick up times. The time lost for

short term inconvenience is far out-weighs the impact of a significant accident between vehicle and a person.

BISHOPS INSERVICE DAY A reminder to all families that 29 July – 2 Aug is Catholic Education Week. During the week a Bishop’s Inservice day is held

in each main centre across the diocese. The day is hosted in Charleville on Monday, Roma on Wednesday and Toowoomba

on Friday 2nd August. As a result, all staff in Toowoomba Catholic Schools are required to attend professional development

on the day. Mater Dei will be closed to allow all staff to attend the day at St Mary’s College.

VISIBLE LEARNING

LIGHT

H is for Honouring

Respect yourself, others & all creation

• Be resilient

• Be adaptable

• Respect others' learning

When we respect ourselves, others and creation, we honour the strengths and talents of all. We respect our own learning and the learning of others. We

encourage growth in ourselves and those around us, supporting each other to strive for success.

FROM THE SCHOOL COUNSELLOR

All About Resilience and Perseverance

Parents,

Hello! Here at school, we often talk about ‘having a growth mindset’-

what it means, how it will help us and how we can do it! At the core of

it, ‘having a growth mindset’ is all about Resilience and Perseverance.

Learning happens best when it is done both at school and at home.

Below are some ways that you can help your child continue to learn

about the theme of Resilience and Perseverance through reading

about it, talking about it, and practicing it!

Read About It!

Here are some books to help you learn more about Resilience:

• The Curious Garden by Peter Brown

• The Most Magnificent Thing by

Ashley Spires

• The Dot by Peter Reynolds

Practice It!

Help your child learn to be resilient and persevere by engaging in

difficult tasks with him/her. Buy a large puzzle, learn and perfect a new

skill, etc.. Find something to do together and commit to pushing each other through the potential

‘failures’ and challenges.

Talk About It! Here are some discussion points to help you talk about resilience and

perseverance with your child:

• What do you think resilience means and why is it important?

• What do you think perseverance means and why is it important?

• Tell me about a time when it was hard to get through a challenge. How did you feel

after?

• What are some things that are hard for you to push through, and how can I help

you?

• What are 3 goals you have? What may be some challenges to meeting these goals?

What will happen if you don’t give up?

Disco for Careen

At the end of last term, Year 4 students volunteered to put on a disco for the school, to raise money for our sponsor child,

Careen.

They gave up many lunch hours to meet in teams to deliver music, dance routines, posters and decorations.

The disco was a wonderful success and thanks to everyone’s generous donations, Mater Dei has raised approximately two

hundred and fifty dollars for Careen’s education.

Thanks to everyone who came along and donated towards this important cause. Together, we honoured Careen’s

learning, her aspirations and her dreams for a better life.

Thank you.

What’s Been Happening? The school holidays were so much fun! From baking donuts, a superhero cake and pancakes, to our

Chipmunks, Bricks4Kidz, Around the World and Lawn Balls incursions and excursions, there was

something for everyone to enjoy. We also had our sand castle kingdoms, made DIY snow globes,

playdough, 3D clay sculptures and our very own candles. Our superhero and glow in the dark parties were

lots of fun with brand new super hero costumes, cake, accessories and glow in the dark glasses, bracelets

and necklaces. The favourite activities were the loom bands, painting, musical statues and lego building,

which we will be running this week and next week. Looking forward to seeing you there! - Holly, Team

Leader.
