A horse having a mild bleed from the nose is not an uncommon occurrence and

it can usually be explained by the horse banging its head or other types of minor trauma. More prolonged or repeated nose bleeds are of more concern and could indicate an underlying problem requiring further investigation.

If you notice your horse having a nose bleed you should take note of whether the horse is showing any signs of distress and, if they are, you should call your vet immediately. However, if your horse is behaving normally then you should assess: is the blood coming from one or both nostrils; is it a trickle or a continuous flow; is it fresh bright red blood or darker in colour; has the nose bleed occurred after exercise or at rest and, if it is recurrent, how frequently are the bleeds occurring. These points are all important information that will help your vet determine what diagnostic steps should be taken.

Other than trauma, the major causes of a blood nose in a horse could be; a progressive ethmoidal haematoma (PEH); a guttural pouch mycosis; exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH); a sinus infection; unexplained rhinitis or nasal masses/tumours. Diagnosis of the specific cause of your horse’s blood nose will usually be made with a combination of endoscopy (putting a special camera up the horses’ nose) and radiography. In some circumstances sinoscopy or, a CT scan may also be required.

A PEH refers to a blood and fibrous tissue mass that develops

By Paula Broadhurst

Nose bleeds in equinesWhen is a Nose bleed cause for concern? Paula Broadhurst outlines some of the more common causes.

on the ethmoid turbinates which lie within the nasal passage. It is not known why these masses develop, but they usually occur in older horses and they can be present either unilaterally or bilaterally. Treatment of this condition usually involves either injecting the haematoma with formalin or surgical removal. In extreme cases that are left untreated or get very large before diagnosis, the horse may show neurological signs.

A guttural pouch mycosis is a fungal growth that occurs within the horses guttural pouches which lie at either side of the back of the throat. The reason why this condition is important is that the fungal growth usually develops over the carotid artery which lies at the back of the guttural pouch. As the growth develops it eats into the artery and as such can cause a spontaneous, sudden onset, severe life threatening nose bleed. However, some horses will present with more minor bleeds initially or with facial nerve paralysis, difficulty eating or other neurological conditions. Treatment involves complicated surgery to place a special coil or balloon into the artery to prevent blood flow to the growth.

The horses head is filled with special air filled cavities called paranasal sinuses and occasionally these can become infected. The horse will usually show signs such as facial swelling and a smelly pus discharge from one or both nostrils however, occasionally this condition may present as bleeding from the nose. Rhinitis refers to inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nose and can be caused by allergy, infection or trauma. The membranes become fragile and can bleed easily when the horse snorts, coughs, eats or exercises. Treatment of both sinus infections and rhinitis involves identifying the underlying cause and then treating either medically or surgically.

Exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH) as the name suggests occurs following vigorous exercise. While it can occur in any breed, it is most commonly associated with racing horses, recent studies have not shown any link to the age or sex of the horse. Many theories have been postulated as to why EIPH occurs, but the most commonly accepted reason is that the pressures created in the lung due to rapid air flow in strenuous exercise cause damage to the small capillaries (blood vessels) within the lung. This leads to bleeding into the tissue and the airways of the lung affecting performance and potentially causing a nose bleed. The nose bleed may present during exercise, immediately after exercise, an hour or so after exercise, or sometimes is only apparent when an endoscope (camera) is passed into the lungs. Some horses may show signs of a sudden reduced performance, increased respiratory rate and prolonged recovery or sometimes coughing and distress. Treatment for EIPH depends on the individual situation, if it is associated with an underlying respiratory tract infection then specific therapies for this may be required however, if no specific inciting cause is identified, a combination of medical, environmental and training management may be required.

Fortunately a less common cause of nose bleeds is airway associated tumours in the nose, upper respiratory tract and lung. The clinical signs and types of nose bleeds associated with these conditions are variable depending on the individual situation and are beyond the scope of this article. If your horse has a nose bleed you should discuss the situation with your own vet and they will advise you on the most appropriate course of action for your individual situation. NM

A t NagMag we have included Tony as part of our team for the past five years or more. We

stumbled across Tony in the early days of his developing love for capturing horses on film and he immediately became a friend and supporter of ours.

Tony had a special gift, a way of seeing into an animal’s soul and portraying this through the lens. He developed a love of heavy horses along the way and his beautiful images travelled far and wide as people from all over the world appreciated his talent. He gave enormous pleasure to many with this talent. Not only was this gift special but so was Tony; he was a loving father and a selfless soul who would always go out of his way to give and sought no praise or thanks.

Tony has left an enormous gap, not only to us here at NagMag but to all the many people he touched in his short life. Here are a few of Tony’s images for you all to enjoy and we give a special thank you to have been priviliged to know this extraordinary man. NM

Obituary : Tony Golding

Jacquie Gardiner from Hurst Green Shires has this to say on their dear friend and Shire lover Tony Golding.

It is with a heavy heart that we have to report the

death of Tony Golding.

The man with the camera that everybody loved and

the images that looked deep into the soul will be

greatly missed. His funeral was well attended and

heavy horses were there to escort him on his final

journey.

He spent many nights snatching snippets of sleep

in his car ready to be up at the sound of hooves for

the Heavy horse shows.

We will all have memories and stories to treasure,

he was a true gentleman, a great husband and

father, a treasured friend.

Tony was due to participate in a challenge to raise

money for his local hospice and for Cancer Research

when he was diagnosed himself with this dreadful

disease. He

leaves his wife,

Michele and his

children Calum,

Stephanie,

Richard, Nicola

and Amy.

Tony’s

memorial will

be the wonderful

photos he leaves

us. He didn’t

just photograph

the horses, he

loved them.

Goodbye Tony

incidentally, did a sterling job as commentator for

the Derby.

Craig Mclelland was on hand to provide

Vets with Horsepower Tour

A group of top equine vets in the country have

just returned from an epic voyage on motorbikes

travelling from the UK through Netherlands,

Hanover, Berlin, Warsaw, Tartu, St Petersburg and back

through Helsinki, Skovde, Larvik and Copenhagen. The

point of the exercise was to deliver lectures on Continuing

Professional Development to Veterinary practitioners while

at the same time raising funds for The Gambia Horse

and Donkey Trust and The Smile Train. In total they have

travelled over 2,700 miles in 16 days, delivering 80 hours

of CPD to up to 600 vets at eight different venues.

The team of 12 comprised; Professor Josh Slater,

Dr Jessica Kidd, Dr Caroline Hahn, Dr John Burford,

Dr Edmund Hainisch, Professor Roger Smith, Dr Alex

Dugdale, Mr David Bardell, Ms Jenny Croft, Professor Derek

Knottenbelt, Dr Richard Corde and from Arundel Equine

Vets Dr Andy Crawford.

We caught up with Andy Crawford at The HIckstead

Derby where several of the vets turned up to promote

the Vets with Horsepower on the Gambia Horse and

Donkey stand. He was very enthusiastic about the trip

and enthused about the importance of CPD. The ongoing

training creates much discussion about how to deal with

various cases, such as talking with the Livestock Assistants

who work very hard with limited resources abroad, helping

them to use the knowledge they acquire to assist the

farmers that they in turn advise. It was while we were at

HIckstead that Herbie Rijndorp from EQ Products kindly

donated another H-trap to The Gambia Horse and Donkey

trust. The H-Trap has proved invaluable in parts of Africa to

aid in combating the dreaded Tse Tse fly which tragically

causes death to the donkeys used by the farmers for

whom their animals are the mainstay of their livelihoods.

As a result of using the H-Trap which is designed to attract

and wipe out the Horse Fly from an area, the University

of Glasgow are carrying out research by extracting DNA

from the Tse Tse fly which it has also trapped, in order to

understand the makeup and help to eradicate the effects

on humans.

Heather Armstrong from the Gambia Horse and

Donkey Trust was overwhelmed at the money raised so

far, she says “Words cannot describe how we feel. It is

totally amazing that professional people of that ilk will go

to such lengths to help a little charity like ours. More than

the money is the people of that standing believe in what

we do. I say to the boys in Gambia, you maybe boys from

the bush but top professionals rate you and the work you

do very highly.” As a result of the money being raised

work has already started in The Gambia on building a new

Education Centre which will include a

Visitors Centre.

As well as the charities that the

Vets with Horsepower support, the

emphasis has been on delivering the

CPD to countries such as Estonia and

Poland. In these countries that do

not have ready finances or in some

cases the latest in technology and

communication links, the talks are

extremely important and a way to

educate and inform first hand.

The main sponsor of the ride

was MSD Animal Health; also many

branches of the NFU, a platinum

sponsor of the ride, are allowing their

offices around the country as drop off points for donated

goods such as Pony head collars, bits, girths, bandages,

dressings, iodine, hibiscrub and cotton wool. Further

information on the NFU website or call Alison Cox on

01789 455211

To date the Vets with Horsepower have raised almost £100k towards the two charities and donations can still be made via their virgin just giving page http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/vetswithhorsepower. NM

I n a reverse of last year’s result,

Trevor Breen and Adventure de

Kannan won this year’s Derby

with four faults in a time of 85.17

seconds, just two-hundredths of a

second ahead of Phillip Miller riding the

grey stallion Caritiar Z, surely the closest

finish in the history of the competition.

“He’s a real Trojan!” said Trevor.

“Despite having had one eye removed

because of an infection just over a year

ago and having been kicked by another

horse yesterday, Addy has an enormous

heart. Whatever you ask him to do, he

gives his all!”

Will Funnell from Dorking rode

his home-bred chestnut stallion Billy

Mexico to victory in the Master’s

Challenge, a speed and power class

which culminates in an ascending row

of white gates.

“That last gate takes a bit of

jumping!” commented Will.

Exactly ten years since he last

won the Bunn Leisure Speed Derby,

Guy Williams from Kent riding the 12

year-old chestnut gelding Casper de

Muze beat Harriet Nuttall and her grey

gelding Silver Lift by more than two

seconds, the only two riders to jump

clear in the class. Not bad going for a

horse that cast a shoe halfway round

the course!

In the tenth year of the Tattersalls

& ROR Thoroughbred Show Horse

Championship, the supreme honours

went to the 10 year-old, 16.2hh Jack

the Giant ridden by Allister Hood. Jack

the Giant raced 26 times, winning on

the flat, over hurdles and fences. In

reserve were Katie Jerram and her

parents’ 10 year-old chestnut Night

Prayers. NM

Fly Products

SAY GOODBYE TO…

Pesky FliesThis year seems to have been particularly bad; probably owing to the lovely hot weather we have been experiencing. Many people have complained about the horse flies and if we think it is bad, imagine how your poor horse feels. Fly masks are a great answer, if your horse suffers from insects around the eye area and although many are on the market, we think that Cottage Craft offer an excellent mask that is padded across the nose to ensure maximum comfort while affording protection. Sprays are a solution but not always the answer and with this in mind we urge you to look at www.flytraps.biz based near

Lingfield in Surrey they offer a number of longer-term solutions.

I n 2012 Palesgate meadow in

Crowborough , East Sussex was

purchased by the local Town

Council. The meadow however is

classified as “unimproved grassland”.

The grassland has never been

subject to agricultural improvement.,

ie, no chemical fertilisers or farmyard

manure have been used. Being

unimproved it is able to support a

large range of native grasses and

wildflowers .

Unimproved grassland is a very

scarce habitat and of a very high

nature conservation importance. It is

not only important for its wildflowers

and grasses but also because it

supports a variety of invertebrates

such as bumblebees and butterflies

which thrive on the pollen and

nectar provided by the varied

combination of fine-leaved grasses

and wildflowers.

Sadly, due to development,

neglect, overgrazing by livestock or

20 ❘ NagMag August 2014 For Advertising Opportunities visit www.NagMagMagazine.com

Introduction of Exmoor Ponies to High Weald

shrews are abundant and in turn

these provide a foodsource for

kestrels and owls.

It became apparent that a long

term strategy was needed to retain

the meadow at its best.

Conservation grazing seemed

to be the answer. Depending on the

timing and the type and number of

livestock used, conservation grazing

can mimic natural processes by

preventing the spread of scrub and

controlling other undesirable or

invasive species.

The Town Council, with the help

of Crowborough Conservation, were

able to obtain funding from the High

Weald AONB Units’ Community

Landscape Fund which paid for stock

fencing. The Sussex Pony Grazing

Conservation Trust, agreed to supply

three Exmoor ponies to graze the

meadow. The ponies will graze the

meadow for two or three months

of the year and then go on to graze

the use of herbicides and fertilizers

over the last 80 years only

3 per cent of the UK’s

unimproved grassland

survives today.

This means

there are far fewer

wildflowers in the

countryside to

provide bees with the

pollen and nectar. This

is really bad news since

bees pollinate all sorts of

fruit and vegetables, which

end up on our plates. A third

of the food we eat is pollinated by

insect pollinators such as honeybees,

bumblebees and butterflies.

CONSERVATION GRAZINGStudies undertaken by Crowborough

Conservation volunteers established

just how important the meadow

was for wildlife. Reptiles and small

mammals such as voles, mice and

other conservation sites in the area.

The Trust trains volunteer

‘Lookerers’ to check on the welfare

of the ponies.

Exmoor ponies are the oldest

of the native breeds of British

ponies and are thought to be the

closest descendant of the ponies

that inhabited Britain 100,000 years

ago. They have hardly changed

since prehistoric times when they

lived alongside mammoths and

sabre-toothed tigers. Until fairly

recently Exmoor ponies were a rare

breed themselves. At the end of the

second world war there were only

50 registered Exmoor ponies, at the

time making them rarer than the

Giant Panda.

The Exmoor’s are adapted to

surviving hostile weather. They are

able to graze out all year round if

required without supplementary

feeding. They will tackle gorse,

brambles and even bracken. By

ensure that they achieve the best

outcome for the meadow.

This year there were many

people who volunteered as

‘Lookerers’ and should the plan

prove successful we look forward

to seeing more wildlife return to

Palesgate Meadow along with the

ponies next year. NM

Introduction of Exmoor Ponies to High Weald

trampling young bracken shoots

the ponies also help to suppress its

spread across grassland.

Monitoring of the affect of the

grazing on Palesgate meadow will

be undertaken continuously. The

number of ponies, duration and

timing of their stay on the meadow

is flexible and can be modified to

A score of 4 or 5 means that your horse is overweight and you should take immediate steps to reduce its weight in a safe, controlled manner to avoid any health problems. Ideal you should be looking for a score of around 2 – 3.

Little Danny Stables’ Top Tips

1. Increase exercise; for the non ridden horse in hand walking or if the horse is sound enough, lungeing or loose schooling.

For the ridden horse increase the workload slowly, mild puffing will indicate your horse is working. Lengthen the work load but remember to do so gradually, overworking an overweight horse will likely cause injury. It could be an idea to set yourself a goal of going to a show or a sponsored ride.

2. Re-assess the diet. Cut back on hard feed and provide fibre stuffs. If in doubt get advice from your yard manager, vet or local feed specialist.

3. Avoid over rugging.

4. Reduce grazing; reduce time at grass; use a grazing muzzle; use a smaller area or well eaten down paddock, or time spent on hard standing. Stabling overnight will help too. Prolonged soaking of hay can cause the hay to degrade and be less nutritious.

5. Monitor your horse or pony’s weight regularly.

Local riders qualify for HOYS ❘ Images © SMR photos

Impressive turnout at Bury FarmSouth Essex Insurance Brokers search for a star qualifier

T he judges were rewarded with some very

polished and consistent performances across the

six Search for a Star classes. Regular Search for

a Star judges, Richard Ramsay (conformation) and David

Bartram (ride) were ably assisted on the day by ride judge

and former Search for a Star Champion, Jordan Cook. Just

the day before Bury Farm, Jordan won the Moulin Rouge

£1,000 Championship final at the North of England Show

at Arena UK with his former Search for a Star winning

horse, Fleetwater Xecutive. Since he won SEIB Search for

a Star in 2007, Fleetwater Xecutive has gone on to qualify

for both HOYS and the RIHS in open classes every year.

Search for a Star has been instrumental in the careers of

both Jordan and Fleetwater Xecutive and the Search for a

Star team are delighted at Jordan’s enthusiasm for putting

something back into the series. Three riders from the NagMag area were successful in

attaining qualification for HOYS at Bury Farm.

Four clear rounds in the Working Hunter class went

through to the final judging. Liz Pellett and her own,

Calato II Z known at home as Ozzy, took third place in the

Working Hunter class. Liz was absolutely thrilled with this

result, she said, “I am just thrilled we have qualified for

HOYS, all the hard work has really paid off. This is only

our second showing show, I bought Ozzy two years ago

to go eventing but we have concentrated on dressage and

showjumping up until now. He is such a wonderful horse

and a real gentleman”. Liz works as a Technical Manager

for Easy Jet, she added, “I have been in this line of work for

over 30 years, it pays for the horses.”

Lily Edgerton and Risky Business took the runner

up spot in the Riding Horse hack class. Lily bought the

thoroughbred, Risky Business as an unbroken six year

old from his breeder in Bath. Lily, from Selsey in West

Sussex said, “A friend said Risky Business looked the part

so we thought we would have a go at Search for a Star.

He is such a good boy, I am really pleased we are going

to HOYS”. Lily and Risky Business also compete in side

saddle classes and jumping and cross country. Lily added,

“Risky Business is a real all-rounder, he does a bit of

everything. We will be doing a lot of practising in the run

up to HOYS including plenty of lessons with our trainer,

Alison Tucker”.

The fourth SEIB Search for a Star and Racehorse to Riding Horse qualifier of 2014 took place at Bury Farm in Slapton, Buckinghamshire on the 6th July

Second place in the cob class went to Gemma Dunn

riding her own, Kells Lad. Gemma from Orpington in Kent

bought Kells Lad – known as Barney at home, in 2011

from Clover Barn Irish Horses in Kent. Gemma said, “I

bought Barney as I had lost a lot of confidence in my

riding. He is just great, I never dreamt I would be going

showing, let alone to HOYS!” This is the first season Barney

has been shown as a cob, the pair have also qualified

for Equifest this year and plan to attend the Edenbridge

show as well in the run up to HOYS. Gemma added, “We

will keep the schooling and practising up in the run up

to HOYS. I work full time as a recruitment consultant in

London and I ride, train and look after Barney in my spare

time. Barney is such a superstar and totally genuine, I am

really looking forward to riding him at HOYS.”

Show Judge, Richard Ramsay said: “This competition

gives amateurs the chance to compete at HOYS, a dream

which many riders would love to realise and the standard

in Search for a Star gets better every year.” NM
