435 Ponti e qualche scorciatoia – a work by David Horvitz, a poet and artist living in Los Angeles – is the second piece from the series 3 Easy Pieces, an art project in public spaces produced by Lab’Bel for Venice. The first one was Concertino Unisono by Michael Staab which took place in Saint Mark’s Square in 2015.
Venice has 435 bridges. These bridges unite the micro-islands, making the city walkable. It is the proximity of the Venetians to each other within their daily lives that transforms the city into one big home where we can still go out and buy bread in our friulane.
Venetians struggle to maintain their unique way of life due to the singularity of their city, many of the local trades disappearing under the shock wave of globalization. But there are determined Venetians who persist in exercising their trade to the rhythm of the city – boat builders, ice cream makers, pastry chefs, gardeners, priests, organists.
David Horvitz is an artist who regularly creates maps, whether around a bouquet or a constellation. For this project, he has collected stories of people who have lived in Venice, connected the places they frequented and the impressions they kept from them, and given all of this voice and circulation, transmitting them in his own way.
More than a calendar of events and performances, this project is presented in the form of a city map that indicates where projects can appear and disappear. 435 Ponti e qualche scorciatoia is taking hold of Venice through an internal itinerary, a walking map drawn by David Horvitz linking all of the bridges of the city by foot. And as you stroll the streets beneath the open windows, you’ll be able to hear children play partitions of Stravinsky’s Walzer, March, or Polka - the three movements that give the Three Easy Pieces their tempo and colour.
435 Ponti e qualche scorciatoia – un’opera di David Horvitz, poeta e artista che vive a Los Angeles – è la seconda parte di 3 Easy Pieces, serie di progetti artistci concepiti per lo spazio pubblico e prodotti da Lab’Bel per Venezia. Il primo progetto, Concertino Unisono di Michael Staab, è stato presentato in Piazza San Marco nel 2015.
Venezia ha 435 ponti. Sono questi che uniscono le micro isole e rendono la città praticabile a piedi. É la prossimità dei Veneziani tra loro e nel quotidiano che fa della città una grande casa dove si può ancora uscire a prendere il pane in friulane.
I Veneziani combattono perchè perduri il loro modo di vivere unico, dovuto alla singolarità della città; molti mestieri che le sono propri scompaiono sotto l’onda choc della globalizzazione. Ma a Venezia ci sono degli ostinati che continuano a fare il proprio lavoro al ritmo della città, dei maestri d’ascia, dei gelatai, dei pasticcieri, dei giardinieri, dei preti, degli organisti.
David Horvitz è un artista conosciuto per creare mappe di mazzi di fiori e delle costellazioni. Ha raccolto storie di persone che hanno abitato Venezia, rilegato i luoghi da loro frequentati e raccolto le loro impressioni per farle risuonare e diffonderle a modo suo.
Più che un calendario di eventi e performance, questo progetto ha i tratti di una mappa della città in cui sono indicati i luoghi dove i progetti possono apparire e scomparire. 435 Ponti e qualche scorciatoia riconquista Venezia seguendo il filo di un itinerario interiore, una mappa disegnata da David Horvitz che colega tutti ponti della città a piedi. E quando passerete per strada sotto le finestre aperte potrete forse sentire dei bambini suonare nelle proprie case il Walzer, la Marcia o la Polka di Stravinsky, i tre movimenti che danno ai suoi Tre pezzi facili il tempo e il colore.

Lucio (8 years old) and Matilde (7 years old) will play on the organ the 3 Easy Pieces by Stravins-ly together with Maestro Massimo Bisson. Built between 1489 and 1508, Chiesa San Rocco hosts a monumental organ built in 1742 by Pietro Nachini. Near the church is the Scuola Grande di San Roc-co, known for its Tintoretto paintings. Stravinsky’s Threni was premiered in this unique historical surroundings in 1958.

Reading of WHEN THE OCEAN SOUNDS on-board three boats sailing along the ephemeral bridge made for the Redentore Festival in Venice.
David Horvitz wrote the score WHEN THE OCEAN SOUNDS for human voices, intended to mimic the sound of the sea. The work is linked to an idea of maritime biologist Rachel Carson, who wrote that the percentage of salt in the sea is equal to the salinity of our blood. This idea supports a theory that all life comes from the sea.
