Message from the Principal It is a great pleasure as Principal of Meánscoil Iognáid Rís to welcome our Yearbook for 2019-20. The Yearbook marks a very successful and unique year for us all in Naas CBS and highlights many of the great achievements by so many over the year. But what an extraordinary year! Who could have believed in March of this year that our 6th years would not be doing a Leaving Cert, our 3rd years not doing their JCT or that our senior footballers might not be given an opportunity to defend their Leinster title? However more pertinent issues and important values came to the fore as the health of our community was threatened by COVID 19. We realised what was important in our lives; our health, our families and our friends. I want to acknowledge the tremendous work of our staff and students in these unprecedented times and the fabulous support of our parents all working as a collective to overcome the challenges inflicted on our school community.

It s the onderful relationships that permeate throughout the school that makes Naas CBS unique. This allows for a great spirit and for an excellent working and learning environment. I want to thank the staff and students whose support and commitment contributes so much to allowing this to happen.

Well done to all who represented the school in a huge number of activities during the year. Sincere thanks to teachers and parents who have worked so hard to make this happen. The voluntary work that goes on in our school is extraordinary and contributes greatly to the holistic development of the lads. Special thanks to our Meitheal team, Prefects and our Student Council for the wonderful leadership they have provided to their fellow students. Special congratulations to all involved in our sporting successes this year. Our senior footballers under the guidance of Mr Joyce, Mr McGuinness and Mr Cullagh deserve a special mention as they weaved a path to a third Leinster final in a row. This is a truly phenomenal achievement.

I want to acknowledge and thank the hundreds of lads who come in and out of our school every day, who have worked so hard and are always pleasant, cooperative and a pleasure to be around.

A special mention to our 6th years, whose resilience and adaptability is something that will stay with us for a long time. You showed your true character as you rose to the challenges of the last few months and I know it will have the positive effect of sustaining you in the years ahead. It has been a pleasure to have you journey with us over the last few years and we look forward to the opportunity of celebrating your time with us in Naas CBS in the near future.

Sincere thanks to our students, Adam Halford, Dylan Stewart, Adam Farrelly, Charles Choiseul, Seán O Rourke, Luke McMahon, Fiachra McManus, Jaemark Reyes and Cian Horan, working under the guidance of Ms Claire O Brien for undertaking the onerous task of publishing this Yearbook. Many thanks also to Mr Stephens for his time and work. Your collective commitment and dedication made this publication possible. Well done to all.

    Go raibh míle maith agaibh.

    Ben Travers

    Principal

Message from the 6th Year Head To all of our Leaving Cert. Students of 2020

In the dying minutes of the 2014 All Ireland Senior Football Final a last gasp Donegal move eventually fell to Colm McFadden lurking on the edge of the Kerry square. Trailing by 3 points, his attempted fist into the net from a parried sa e rebounded off the upright and became Donegal s last chance to clinch a dramatic draw. Moments later referee Eddie Kinsella blew the final whistle and Kerry were crowned All Ireland champions for the 37th time managed that day by Eamonn Fit maurice. The game ill al a s be remembered for Paul Durkan s kick out that landed in Kieran Donagh s hands and the rest as the sa is histor !

Two weeks previously in the same venue the drama was even at a higher pitch, when two heavy weights of the hurling world Kilkenny and Tipperary squared off in the All Ireland Senior Hurling Final. A late cameo appearance from Henry Shefflin with 4 mins to go and leading by 3 points Kilkenny looked to have had enough done, but on a day when the umpires became the busiest men in Croke Park, Tipperar eren t going a a ithout a fight. It as a relentless game that produced a total of 54 scores and the journalists on that day could hardly keep up with everything that unfolded. With both teams le el in injur time a late John (Bubbles) O D er free from outside the Tipp 45m line looked to have gone between the posts. Referee Barry Kelly called for Hawk-Eye and the rest is history!

Our Leaving Cert. class of 2020 were barely 2 weeks into their Naas CBS journey when all of this sporting drama was unfolding before our eyes. The Script were at number 1 in the Irish music charts with their hit single Superheroes. Since then Dublin have gone on to dominate the football landscape winning 5 All Irelands in a row. The hurling titles have been shared by Kilkenny, Tipperary, Galway and Limerick. Across the pond the Premier League has been dominated by financial investment and the lure of high wages for top players. Liverpool are close to clinching their first title in 30 years (fingers crossed). How we all would love to see a match again given our current way of living! As we know a lot can happen in 6 years and during that time, our 1st years of 2014 with their pristine new uniforms and smart haircuts have now grown into fine young men.

To all of our Leaving Cert. students of 2020, your current few months have no doubt been o ershado ed b the Co id 19 pandemic but that on t define our journe . As our Year Head it has been a privilege to have had the chance to work with you. Since your first day in Naas CBS, I want to thank you for the positive relationships that you have made and the level of respect that you have shown for all of our staff. I want you to know that I am extremely proud of your relentless work, especiall o er the last fe months against all of the odds. You e had to adapt and learn in ne ways but I have seen the emails and text messages from your teachers confirming your wonderful levels of engagement with all forms of online learning. The constant hours of study, revision and answering of exam questions, when endless conversations in our country focused on the uncertainty surrounding the Leaving Cert. The moving goal posts in terms of the time frame and now a new method of calculating your grades. Your resilience and ability to work independently will stand to you in all aspects of your future life. This is certainly a time in your education that we will all remember for the rest of our lives.

On your behalf I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of your teachers and especially your form teachers for their wonderful support and their investment in your education during your CBS journey. The constant focus on your wellbeing, the wonderful relationships and sowing the seed of interest ithin their subject areas. I kno that just like ou, the da asn t constrained b the 4 o clock bell for our teachers. The last fe months ha e been difficult for e er one but to witness the determination of your teachers to look after you has been inspiring. I know that all of your teachers will be in your corner in relation to the calculated grades process.

Gentlemen. I appreciate that you have missed out on numerous milestones recently, the last day in each class, your sports day, final assembly and your graduation night to name but a few. We look forward to your debs night in the near future and getting the chance to celebrate with you properly. I want to thank my fellow members of management in Naas CBS, Mr. Travers, Mr. Murphy and Ms. Power for their support and for always having your best interests at heart. I want to thank you and your parents for choosing Naas CBS and hopefully you leave us with good memories.

As you embark on the next phase of your life, Naas CBS will take a back seat but hopefully you will carry the values, work ethic and ability to forge positive relationships with you always. The immediate future might be a little uncertain but as Martin Luther King said faith is taking the first step e en hen ou don t see the hole staircase .

    Rory Purcell.

NAAS CBS RUGBY - 2019/20 The school fielded both a Junior Team and a First Year Team this season and once again it was our JCT boys who brought a trophy to the school to add to the considerable success of previous seasons. The team began preparations for this season as far back as the previous May, on foot of the historic treble-winning season of 2018/19. We also moved up to League Division 1B for the first time, enjoying a higher and more consistent standard of regular competitive games, primarily among the Dublin-based rugby schools.

Junior Rugby Captain Mark Alexander pictured with back-row colleague Austin Brennan

Mark Alexander was chosen as captain along with Charlie Murphy as vice-captain and proper training began as soon as we returned in September. Austin Brennan, Jamie Carroll and Fionn Monaghan were also back again for another season. However the remaining 27 squad members were all new to Junior Cup Rugby so it was all the more impressive that essentially a new squad, under Head Coach Paddy McDonnell from Naas RFC, became the first team from the school to win the 1B League title. It was also notable that the team enjoyed the input from Mr Ben Tomkins, an ex-Kilkenny College Cup player himself and newly employed in the MTW Department in the school.

Victory in that final came on March 4th against Wilson's Hospital, on a day when heroic defending and exemplary discipline saw Naas CBS take victory 15-10. It went some way towards compensating the team for losing (16-10) at the quarter final stage of the Fr Godfrey Cup in Donnybrook at the hands of Catholic University School, having previously seen off a decent team from Wesley College 24-19 in Templeville Road.

FIRST YEAR RUGBY TEAM Our First Years entered the newly-formed North Midlands Area league and our two teachers Ms Muireann Joyce and Ms Ella Houlihan began afresh with this new squad. Together with CCRO Mick Cahill, the Naas CBS team were on their way for top honours. A strong win (50-7) ersus St Ke ins Dunlavin, followed by a similar 43-0 seven-try victory against a traditionally strong Ardscoil Athy team, put us top of our group. However, the unfortunate closure stopped us in our tracks. With almost 40 boys competing for places, there remains a healthy interest in the game in the school and it is a pity they did not get to their final day as scheduled. While the future or rugby, like that of all sports, remains somewhat uncertain at the time of writing, there is no doubt about the quality of effort and commitment from the boys and their coaches to this point has been outstanding. Since our first season in 2002, we have contested 17 Leinster finals, in League and Cup, in 18 years, winning no less than 14 of them. This is not to count the various 1st Year competitions we have contested with success also. We can only hope the good days will return again, as we see a number of teachers, coaches and players on hand to see rugby continue in this vein into the future.

Senior Football PBS v CBS Round 1 After weeks of many competitive friendlies and tough sessions, we started out our Leinster defence to play PBS, our noisy neighbours who had been waiting for us since the draw was made. A local derby is always tough and we knew we were in for a battle. Key player Mikey McGovern was missing along with Kevin Quinn. We started okay and it was nip and tuck. Alex Beirne, the joint captain (with Paddy McDermott), scored a crucial penalty early on which proved to be the difference after a poor second half display. CBS V Benildus College Round 2 After going back to the drawing board we made no mistake against Benildus. A fantastic team performance gave us a well-deserved win. This left us in the last 16 but of course plenty of work to do to reach our desired goal. After a Christmas of hard work and plenty of good challenge matches we were in great shape. We started the year off flying. Hammering our old foe, St. Michaels Enniskillen, albeit was only a friendly, there was nothing friendly about the game and it was lovely to get one over on them. Good wins o er Wicklo 20 s (Ke in Quinn ill argue it as their second team) and the Ulster B champions had us raring to go. Athlone CC v CBS Final 16 Another superb team performance all round. The whole team got a run and a chance to prove themselves. Competition in the squad was heating up and so was the opposition. We were now down to the last 8 and had not fully been challenged but we always stayed grounded thanks to a fantastic management team. Moate CC V CBS Quarter Final Our first real championship game. 13 men behind the ball. Cynical and tough. Moate were always going to be hard bet, like PBS. However, we knew what to do, of course no stone was left unturned in preparation and we composed ourselves, shifting the ball side to side waiting for the correct opportunity to strike. We had a fantastic first half, an example for any team looking to beat a blanket defence. The game seemed dead and buried, but a late rally from Moate gave us a slight scare and wakeup call, 50 minutes won't be enough to beat Marist Athlone. However we knew we were in the business end of the Championship, the ground was getting harder and the Naas CBS supporters were out in full force. Marist College Athlone v CBS Semi Final In the white of Kildare we travelled to play Marist in Kinnegad. A familiar face, the team the first Leinster championship winning team bet. Marist were dying to get one over on us. Marist were talented and physical, a great combination, but we were not giving up our Leinster crown. With an early goal scare from Marist we steadied the ship but we struggled to get going. Mikey McGovern was introduced in the second half, after being out for seven months. We battled hard in the second half with great performances in the middle of the park. It finished up and we had a couple points to spare. Leinster final time, for the third ear in a ro St. Joseph's Rochfortbridge v CBS Leinster Final The team everyone had talked about all year, which annoyed us, they had been talked up and everyone seemed to forget us. Hopefully we get a chance to do the three peat when the current situation blo s o er It s what this fantastic group of players and management deserve.

A fe thank ous . Jenny Duffy, Paul Divily and Johnny Doyle, they took us into the Maynooth college facilities at the start of the year for testing. Conor Laverty, the Kilcoo man gave us one of the best sessions I've ever been part of. It's a shame we never got a chance to put it into practice in the Leinster final. Cormac Kirwan and Louise Keane, Two people who have been instrumental in the last 3 years. Part of two Leinster winning teams and a Hogan cup final team. Sadly they had to part ways this year with other commitments but they will not be forgotten for the foundations they put in for this year's team to succeed. To the team, 30 players who without fail gave 110% every session and match. A pleasure to lead out this year along with Paddy. To Ronan, Alan and Shane. Easily the best management I have played under. Endless hours of preparing us to be the best we could have been. No stone was ever left unturned and without them we would have never gotten near where we have gotten to today, a credit to the school. - Alex Beirne

Senior Hurling From our very first training session, it was obvious the team was full of talent, however we still knew it would take more than talent to repeat the success of the 2015/2016 Leinster B senior hurling champions. After two challenge games against Maynooth Freshers and Mountrath CS it was obvious the desire this team conveyed. We were in a group consisting of two stronghold hurling teams, the Leinster & All Ireland holders Col. Choilm Tullamore and Banagher College. 6th November - Group Game vs Tullamore Our first fixture was against Tullamore at home in Eire Og GAA. A tough 60 minutes was in store for us but I could not fault the hunger and burning desire our men brought to the game. It was level pegging with about 2 minutes left on the clock as confirmed by the referee. We won a free on our own 65 yard line. With a blustery wind behind his back, the confident Paul Dolan stood up to float it over the bar. However when the final whistle blew the ref confirmed a one point victory to Tullamore, to our dismay. We were cut short that day but it stood to us the following game against Banagher. 21st November - Group Game vs Banagher In Banaghers home school pitch, we dominated the game. From the half back line of Ben Noone, Drew Costello and Peter O Donoghue, these lads governed in the air, winning everything that could be won. After one of our most convincing, yet hard fought wins we came out 8 points on top, with a Leinster quarter final to look forward to. 6th December – Leinster Quarter Final vs Mounthrath From the get-go both sides ere fired up and made it clear the eren t alking a a from a chance to advance to the semi-final without a serious battle. A hard fought team performance in the first half left us going in two points behind at the break. The second half saw a rise in intensity of the game. We opened up the second half with two consecutive points but naively conceded two handy frees to give them the lead once again. Points were exchanged and then unfortunately we were reduced to 14 men with 8 minutes left on the clock. This impacted the team heavily and we struggled to get a grip of the game in the dying minutes. Despite this I could not fault the hunger of our team but sadly Mountrath progressed to the semi-final. Great commitment and dedication was shown by the players and the managers Mr Crosbie and Mr Cummins. A massive thanks for their hard work. I do hope that next year as a group we can increase our commitment to further training sessions which will be required to reach our goal of a Leinster final. Hard work will always beat talent. It has been an experience in itself and I am sure all players and managers enjoyed every step of the way. - Conán Boran

Senior Soccer Our first game of the school year was a cup match against Clongowes College. It turned out to be an easy game which we won 7-0 with Bryan Leavy scoring 4. Our next two matches were in the league against Newbridge and then Athy. We played really well against Newbridge. Dan Woulfe and Kayier Lopes were brilliant in defence, Colm Nolan never stopped working up and down the pitch and Gary McDonnell was man of the match scoring two goals. The match finished 3-0. The following week we travelled to Athy for a very intense match. The whole Athy school came out to watch Conor Price! We scored first but in the final few minutes Athy equalised. The game finished a draw and this meant we were through to the league semi-final against Clane. Before the semi-final we had to play Clane in the next round of the cup. This was a very passionate game as it was a local derby. It was a tight game but Clane finished out on top. We lost 3-2 and were knocked out of the cup. This made everyone more determined to beat Clane in the semi-finals of the league.

We played Clane in Naas and it was a very tense match. There were a lot of tackles and the game was end to end. We wanted it more than Clane and every one of our players won their individual battle. Jake Sheehan had a great game in midfield. He got on the ball and played great passes into Matthew McCarrick who could dribble past anyone. We went two goals ahead before Clane got a goal back. Sam McCormack scored a great header which ended the game and we were into the league final.

The final was against Kilcullen and it was played in Newbridge. However, having beaten Clane we thought we only had to show up to win but we were wrong. We spent the first half camped in the Kilcullen penalty box with Oisin Hand creating many chances. Unfortunately, no matter ho close e got, the ball just ouldn t go into the net. Jack Healy hit the post and crossbar at least four times. Somehow it was 0-0 at half time. The second half was more of the same. Then against the run of play Kilcullen scored from a quick counterattack. We tried to keep calm thinking we would get back into the game. However even though we

were the better team and created numerous chances it just was not our day. We lost 1-0.

Although we lost, I really enjoyed playing football with the school. On behalf of the team I would like to thank everyone who made it possible for us to play, especially Mr Fitzgibbon, Mr Bolger and Mr Boland who managed the team not only this year but for many years throughout my time in the school. It was always great fun and it was a pleasure to share great moments with a great group of lads.

Cross Countr The 2019/20 cross country season was a successful one. The season started with the Three counties league in November and December. Our first race took place in the Curragh. All our teams were successful on the day and qualified for the next stage. Unfortunately the CBS Cross Country, which is normally held in December, was postponed. The South Leinster Schools Cross Country was held in the Carlow county grounds in February. Once again the teams qualified for Leinster. A great race from Shane Coffey saw him finish in the top 5. All teams under 14, 15, 17 and under 19 qualified for the Leinster cross country. It was held in Santry demesne in February. Our under 19 and under 14 team finished fourth, narrowly missing out on a place in the All Irelands. Shane Coffey yet again qualified for the All Irelands and under 14 runner Cathal McCarthy qualified also. The All Irelands School Cross Country was held in Santry on the 7th of March. Not many reached this stage of the season so it was great to have the two lads representing the school. Shane finished in fifth place in the country, in a very competitive 6000m race, which is a fantastic achievement. Cathal also ran a great race. Well done to the two lads. Well done to all the athletes for getting out and representing our school this year. Great to see a big turnout from the first year students. We hope to welcome lots more athletes next year. Massive thanks to Ms. Kilcoyne for organising training sessions and taking care of the teams. - Killian Burke 3rd year

School Golf Congratulations to the Junior Golfers, Eoin Freeman, Darragh Behan and Andrew Curran who won the All Ireland Schools Junior Golf Title for the first time in the history of the school in 2019. The team was honoured in January at the Golfing Union of Ireland, Champions' Dinner at Carton House. This is an annual "Black Tie", occasion that recognises all the Irish golfing success stories of the year from the Juvenile ranks right up to Shane Lowry's fantastic success in the "Open Championship" in Royal Portrush. Our very own champions won their All Ireland title on a beautiful day in Royal Portstewart, which is to host the Irish Open in 2021, back in April 2019. Well done again boys, you represented yourselves, your families and your school with great pride and the very best of luck to you all in your future golfing adventures. - Niall Rennick

Senior Basketball Our Under-19 Basketball team had a good year, showing great effort in the Midlands Competition. Unfortunately we lost in the Midlands Semi-Finals but great team effort was shown by each and every single player. Throughout the year our team contributed some great plays made by Clinton Efinda, Callum McGrail, David Connolly and Elliot Byrne. Special thanks to our management and all the best to all the lads on the team with their future endeavours.

Science Corner In early December 2019, Brian Gibson, a Forensic Scientist from Forensic Science Ireland, gave some of our senior students a presentation called DNA profiling (The Leaving Cert, CSI and the Real World). It was a hugely interesting presentation where Brian gave examples and explained how forensic science helps the Guards catch the bad guys! He refused to tell the group how to remove gunshot residue (GSR) off their hands!! It was a totally enjoyable presentation that we hope to repeat soon. - Ms Walsh

Architects in Schools Architects in Schools' as a orkshop that Naas CBS hosted in the school in February this year. The workshop took place over four days and was sponsored by the Irish Architecture Foundation. Our students were taken through the design process with architect Ghinlon Wang who also taught our students the basics of model making. The design task set for students was how the library space in the school could be reimagined to reflect the digital age. These libraries incorporated more informal seating and desk arrangements where students can meet in groups and discuss group work, while also including more formal 'quiet zones', where students can focus on individual study. There were a number of groups that took a departure from the brief and found totally alternative uses for the space. The workshops provided a valuable insight into the design process and how architects think and work. There were a number of students present who are very interested in studying architecture and can use the experience when preparing a portfolio for college courses and interviews. The students seemed to enjoy the workshops and learned a lot from the experience. - Mr Fitzpatrick

Greenschools Over the school year, the Greenschools committee has done many things for the school. We have had many displays in the assembly area which informed the school about how water affects people's lives. We installed water harvesting tanks beside the gym to help the school conserve water. We will use this water to water all of the plants in the school garden. In October we held a green school climate action week highlighting the impact that the fashion industry has on climate change. We made a display and put it up in the assembly. During that week we held a clothes collection/competition and donated the clothes to local charities. We collected a total of 84kgs of clothes We also had a water awareness day where we helped raise awareness of humanity's water usage throughout the world and it was also a rag day where people wore the colour blue. In late Februar e did a Walk for Water , here e alked through the to n ith a large 5th ear class and chanted our Green Code. It was a great success! Big thanks to Ms. Cowper for organising and overseeing this event. O er the ear, e e orked er hard and hopefull e ill be able to get the school a ater flag. We would like to thank Ms. Cowper for all of the work she did this year. Thank you. - Jamie Moore

    Amnest

This school ear, the school s Amnest group launched their first campaign in ol ing the issue of direct provision. We aimed to have a week in our school highlighting the issue of direct provision.

    What is Direct Provision?

The Direct Pro ision s stem as launched in 2000 to pro ide housing, food and other necessities to people seeking asylum in Ireland. Direct Provision centres are hostels, hotels and other accommodation owned and run by private companies for profit, paid for by the Government. Direct Provision was designed as a short-term emergency measure. It has instead become a system where people are trapped in limbo for years, often in overcrowded conditions, without adequate facilities and supports. It is particularly harsh for children, and for vulnerable adults who have experienced trauma and even torture before arriving in Ireland. Centres are often in isolated locations far from local communities, and some lack facilities that allo people to cook for themsel es. - Amnesty International Ireland

The campaign included multiple guest speakers, who took time out of their days, to come in and inform the group about the details of Direct Provision and the current problems around the issue. Our first guest speaker was Deirdre Walsh, Youth Activism Officer in Amnesty Ireland. The Amnesty team along with 2F, who decided to help with the campaign, learned about the direct pro ision s stem in Ireland. Deirdre s talk elevated our understanding of the issue. She brought us through the horrific circumstances that some of the people endure before entering Ireland and then detailed the conditions which they are living in now. After the talk, we wanted to do something about this issue.

After much deliberation, the group set out on organising a Direct Provision week in the school. We felt that this was a relatively unknown issue and wanted to raise awareness of this system which had been in the country for the past 20 years. During the 2nd 6th of December 2019, the Direct Provision Week was in full swing in the school. The Amnesty team had constructed a display in the assembly, for information about our campaign. We also created a class teaching our fellow students about the issue, which we gave to the religion and CSPE departments to have this tailored lesson.

During the week we had two guest speakers to present to multiple classes. Rory, Integration Projects Manager from the Irish Refugee Council, spoke to students. His presentation was excellent and described his organisation s role in this issue. Ror de eloped a

Housing Programme, which sees people accommodate secure tenancies, and employment-based projects done in partnership with different employers and employment support agencies. He spent nine years documenting the direct provision system and its consequences as a photographer.

During the latter half of the week, Mavis Ramazani who lives in direct provision held multiple talks. She is an activist and educator working with Amnesty International. Mavis was awarded a WoW 2020 by Outlandish Theatre Platform for her inspiring intersectional grassroots work around gender equality and social justice, and also received the Health Hero award by Irish Times in 2018 for helping improve the lives for vulnerable persons in the community. Mavis detailed her own experience in South Africa before she was forced to move to Ireland and talked about the direct provision system. Her story was truly inspirational and thought-provoking.

On the Thursday we held our main action for our campaign, a bake sale in the assembly. The class of 2F ran the fundraiser with all proceeds going towards buying gifts for the children living in the Newbridge direct provision centre. We had gotten into contact with the centre in Newbridge and wanted to give Christmas presents to the 33 children at the centre. The bake sale was a resounding success and we would like to thank you to everyone who contributed.

Along with this fundraiser, we collected signatures from students to sign a petition for the government, urging more action to be taken on this issue. The Amnesty team sent these to Amnesty Ireland, to give to the government.

During the last week of school before Christmas, a small delegation from the Amnesty Team visited the direct provision centre in Newbridge. We had wrapped a selection box for each of the children, and also had a card from the team and a 40 gift voucher for Smyths Toy Store. The visit was a festive celebration. We had arrived during their Christmas celebration with a clown performing and a visit from a Santa Claus. The visit was truly insightful, to visit the centre where multiple families

are forced to live and are doing their best with their circumstances. The staff were heart-warming and kind, they organised a trip to Smyths Toy Store for the parents to use the gift vouchers. One of the class of 2F, Fionn Lardner, also had donated a football table, which the children loved.

Sadly our LGBTI+ campaign, to educate students around this topic, was postponed due to the school closures. Our aim was to demonstrate solidarity with the LGBTI+ community, and show acceptance of all students and their identities. We had planned to host an LGBTI+ rag day in the school, where each of the school years would wear one of the colours of the flag. This would be coupled with workshops for a few of the years, to raise awareness and educate the student body about this campaign. We will certainly continue our efforts campaigning for human rights, when feasible, during the next year.

The Amnesty team would like to thank Mr. Coy, Ms. Kearns, Ms. Prendervile and Mr. Reilly for all their work with the team. Their invaluable help was greatly appreciated!

Meitheal Meitheal has as long as I can remember been an important aspect of student involvement in Naas CBS and the school has always gone above and beyond to facilitate and encourage the programme amongst sixth year students!

This ear s Meitheal team consists of ten students, Bill Egan, Charles Choiseul, Eoin Valentine, Eoghan Kelly, Fiachra McManus, Joe Eustace, Matthew Cusack, Rossa Stapleton, Sean O Rourke and Tom McMahon who were guided throughout the year by Mairead Murphy, our Meitheal contact teacher!

There are a number of things that we had to do to become Meitheal. Towards the end of fifth year we had to take part in interviews with Robert Norton the founder of Meitheal. With many of our fellow year mates equally deserving of the programme also applying for one of the ten places made the decision very difficult for Rob. After sometime it was announced that we were the lucky ten to be chosen and that we would have to travel to Castletown during the summer for training and teambuilding about how we should guide our first years.

The training was intense and tiring but extremely worth it! We built stronger friendships with our own Meitheal team but also new ones with other trainee Meitheal in Castletown! Our days were filled with team building exercises and being taught activities to help us connect with our first years and how to deal with students that needed a hand to deal with settling in, finding their way around the school or in fact any other problems they may encounter! We also put together plans of activities that we would do with our first years come September and how we would handle the classes during their first few weeks.

When schools reopened after summer we were assigned two Meitheal to a class in most cases and we met with the first year teachers and year head so that we could organise an appropriate timetable. After this we met with our classes and for the first two weeks we spent a lot of time with them answering questions and teaching them the workings of the school. After the initial two weeks we were able to stop the class visits and change them to weekly visits to their locker areas where they could speak to us about any worries they could have in a confidential setting.

In the meantime we were organising our activities including a cinema trip, a table quiz, and a disco that we organised with the help of St Marys Meitheal team. Other smaller activities such as goodie bags at Christmas were also organised. All turned out to be a huge success and we bonded strongly with our first year classes. Unfortunately due to the coronavirus pandemic we were unable to complete our final activities that we had planned including a pizza party and possible sports day and also our Meitheal grad which was planned for March of this year. We hope to do something to make up for this in the future

We are hopeful that we ensured that each first year student had a welcoming and enjoyable year in CBS and we are looking forward to the days when we get to see some of our 1st years become Meitheal leaders to their very own first year group!

On behalf of all the Meitheal leaders we would like to thank Mr Travers, Ms Corcoran, the management team and all the teachers who helped watch over any events we organised. Their work is extremely appreciated and ensured a smooth sailing year.

A special thanks to Ms Murphy who encouraged all our plans and helped fix any issues we may have encountered. Her work helped us to carry out all of the activities for the first years and we are extremely lucky to have been guided with such professionalism.

Finally we would like to thank all of our first year students for all your great work this year. We thoroughly enjoyed working with you all and we hope to see you all sometime in the near future!!

Meitheal Disco The Meitheal Disco was a disco setup for the 1st years of Naas CBS and St. Mary's Secondary schools in Naas CBS assembly hall. The night consisted of many songs that most people like, there was also a shop selling chocolate, sweets, Coke and other drinks for 1. The entrance was split and both schools had a coat room and a cooldown room. The night was very fun and entertaining too with many dances going around the dance floor. I think everyone liked the disco and I thank the Meitheal for setting it up.

AerPri e 2020 The AerPrize competition was held in Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel, on Friday the 13th of March led by Seosamh Somers. The competition is to promote STEM subjects in secondary schools which sees two winners out of twelve to go to California for 6 weeks to train for their private pilots licence. Although I did not get into the first two, I got a great day out in Baldonnel where we had a tour of the facility. Here we got to see all the Aer Corps helicopters and airplanes and then the garda helicopters. The interesting part of this was that we saw the government jet and planes taking off and landing in the aerodrome. Another stage of the day was where we undertook various computer based aptitude tests. The depth and the quality of the assessment provided by the Aer Corps was nothing short of amazing. As part of the assessment, competitors also had to take controls of a pilatus PC9 aircraft simulator under the watchful eyes of an Aer Corps personnel. The day out was amazing and I ouldn t ha e gotten this far ithout the help of m ph sics teacher, Ms O'Brien. - Peter Judge

Junior Debating The junior debating team consists of a number of students from 1st to 3rd year. Ms. Phibbs is in charge of the debating team. She helps us prepare and practise speeches for debates and also organises some debates bet een the CBS, St. Mar s and Pipers Hill.

All of the members of the junior debating team come and practise debating on Tuesdays during lunch. During these practises, we brainstorm points and motions for debates, come up with rebuttals for debates, practise speeches and host house debates.

As I mentioned in the first paragraph, there are debates bet een the CBS, St. Mar s and Pipers Hill throughout the year. During the debates, there is a chairperson and timekeeper from the hosting school, and an adjudicator from each school. After each debate, points are awarded for the winner of the debate, and for best speaker.

    - Shane Whelan

Senior Debating The senior debating team this year consisted of Andrew O'Grady, Jacob Creevey, Hugh Barrett, Eoin Keogh, Mateusz Mizgala and Daniel Connolly. Debating is a fantastic activity, it allows one to build confidence, improve speech writing and is of great benefit to your English and argumentative skills as a whole. As per usual now, we took part in the concern debates which are a fantastic way to educate yourself about current global issues while seeing several sides to a story. The team was excellently mentored by Ms Van Esbeck who helped us perfect our speeches and we greatly appreciate the time and effort she puts in. I would highly recommend debating to anyone hoping to improve their public speaking, confidence or English as it is an ample opportunity to do so while meeting new people and having fun, plus there's snacks at the end of each debate.

6th Year Retreat In October 2019, a number of sixth year students travelled to Castletown, County Laois for a sixth year retreat. A one day trip, this event gave the lads a break from classes and an opportunity to look toward the year ahead in a different way. Through a number of activities, the students gained a positive outlook on the year ahead. These activities involved mindfulness, reflection and team-building exercises. Throughout the course of the day, students learned about the importance of mental wellbeing during a challenging year. All the lads had an enjoyable day and recommended that future years avail of this great experience. - Fiachra McManus

6th Year Les Mis rables Trip In March, a group of Sixth Years got the chance to travel on a theatre trip to London with two teachers, Ms. Van Esbeck and Ms. Woulfe. Upon arriving in the city, we first went on a tour of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, where we learned about the theatre's various features. We then did a Hamlet workshop and learned about the ways in which Shakespeare wrote his plays. Finally, we went to the Sondheim Theatre, where we saw a stage production of Les Misérables. The production was brilliant, and it was a fitting end to an excellent day. Thanks to Ms. Van Esbeck and Ms. Woulfe for the great trip.

Higher Options In September 2019, all sixth year students attended the Higher Options event in the RDS, Dublin. This event, organised by the Irish Times, gave students an insight into college courses and career options. Stalls were also organised to present students with an overview of various colleges and universities, helping students to find the best option for them. On a jam-packed day, students were also given the chance to meet other people from many counties around the country with similar interests. The event brought students together in an informative environment, giving students a tool to plan for the future. And of course, nobody complained about a day away from classes. - Fiachra McManus

There are prefects for managing the shop line at lunch, for setting up table tennis in the assembly at lunch, for managing the library so nobody messes around inside, for creating a newsletter, for putting the lost and found items on display, for collecting money at rag days, for doing activities with the 1st years and for gathering all the sports jerseys and bringing them to the dry cleaners. These are just some of the many roles a prefect could have. I was a sports prefect alongside three other prefects. Our job was to set up sport activities in the gym hall at lunch for the first years. The main aim of the prefects is to keep the school in order and to help out the first years by providing activities for them. Becoming a prefect offers the students the chance at having a leadership role within the school and so develops their leadership skills. - Adam Halford

Throughout the year the student council held meetings in order to represent the needs of the student body and to try and accommodate these needs as best as we could. Each member wore a gold coloured badge which allowed others in their year to identify them as one of the student council members representing them and so could approach them with any issues they had. The representing member would then bring this issue to the meeting with them where it would be discussed and a solution would try to be created. We also discussed many ideas for fundraisers. Alongside the Parent s Council e held a bingo night, with the night proving to be a huge success and the proceeds going towards the school. We also had a bake sale planned but the timing proved unfortunate.

The student council offers students of all years a fantastic opportunity to show leadership within the school. Being part of the student council improves communication skills, as well as leadership skills and has proven to have a positive impact on the experience of all students within the school. I would encourage all students to consider applying to be part of the student council for next year.

Mock Inter ie s The mock interviews are a major event for 6th year students in our school. Held on 19th November this year the evening consists of people from a broad range of professions coming in to interview the students. Organised by the parents council along with the guidance team, this event gives the 6th years a glimpse into an area of employment which they are interested in pursuing. It also supplies the students with invaluable interview experience. From economics to science, and carpentry to medicine, an interviewer was available for almost every career. And who can turn down an opportunity to wear a suit? A huge thanks to the parents council and guidance team for organising such an event. Congratulations to all 6th years for the great interviews on the night, and the great craic in the Town House afterwards. - Dylan Stewart
