VWHO'S WHO IN THE COMICS

By Fred Schaefef.

"Nobody."When we are in trouble, who

'comes along juSt at the righttime?

"Nobody."He-'- s a peculiar and funny cuss,

this "Nobody." His hat as thekind that "Nobody" would wearand his coat one that "Nobody"could have any use for, and hiscane is just the kind that "No-

body" would choose. And striphim of his clothes, there is "No-

body there. We receive a perfect flood of

inquiries about "Nobody" fromConstant Reader and Virtas andPro Bono Public, but there arequestions that "Nobody" couldfully answer. The best we cando is make a try at it.

Q. Who is he?Ans. Nobody in particular.Q. Where does he live?Ans. Nowhere.Q. What does he eat?Ans. Nothing.Q. Has he any brains?

Ans.' That's something he keepsunder his hat.

Q. Is he dissatisfied?Ans. On the contrary, "No-

body" is satisfied. To go ahead and tell you every-

thing we know about him will nottake long. He is a mysteriousmember of society and somewhatof a nuisance. It is he who stolethe jam, who struck Billy Pat-

terson, who has seen Kelly, andwho understands what the wild

He is also a good deal of &

martyr, for it is he who is gen- -erally hanged for the many atTT

rocious murders that are coml"mitted. Well, we can't be verysorry for him since the evidencealways puts the blame stronglyupon him. Still he has virtues. He and George Washington

told the truth. He never-mad- e

a mistake, does his duty al-

ways, pays his taxes willingly andis always helpful. To throw a lit-

tle more light on the latter state-ment, what you leave for Every-body to do "Nobody" does.

Some eccentric qualities he alsohas. He believes Dr. Cook reallydiscovered the North Pole. He isthe only person who will admitthat Opportunity knocked at his,

and make a purse of a sow's ear.(Not that he needs a purse, be-

cause he can get along withoutmoney.) He can decide whendoctors disagree, he camprehendseternity, and is immortal.

TWO TIMES TWO IS NOT FIVE

In New York a man and a woman committed suicide together. The woman had deserted her husband for this man, lived with him,and married him after her husband got a divorce.

In Newark, N. jk, a man has been sentenced to death for poison-ing his wife, in older to "be free to marry his stenographer. Thelatter threatens to kill herself in case the man .is executed.

In Chicago a man Jeft his wife, and a woman her husband, re-

cently, to live in open guilt together. This action was defended bythe man, in a long newspaper statement.

. The first-nam- couple have finished 'their story, so far as thisworld goes. The second pair are in a fair way to. Regarding theothers, watch the newspapers. The finish will be there, sooner orlater. It will be an ugly, or at least, a wretched story. It always is.

Why?Because two times two is not five, and never will be.All these people have proudly and vaingldriously "defied con-

vention." The have declared they will "live their own lives," re-gardless of "the world."

"Convention." "The world." These they say they defy. Andwhat do they really defy or seek to defy? Law and order.

They are going to "live their own lives" regardless of law andorder.

This universe is governed by a fixed principle of eternal and in-finite harmony. That principle is expressed in every exact science. It governs the" science of mathematics. Because of the unvarying-nes- s

of that principle, two times two is four alway four. Neverthree, never five. "

As the human race has developed in its progress that which weu 11 civilization, it has, consciously or no, adopted as the basis ofcivilization the principle and law of universal harmony. .

Society exists subject to law and order. Sound morals are an "

essential factor of that law and order. Legal marriage and fidelity10 the obligations of the marriage covenant are as necessary to the

WHO'S-WH- O IN THE COMICS' By Fred Schaefer.

f .

Some years ago a gentlerinof-fensiv- e

stranger landed on thisterrestial sphere with no. luggagebut a notebook. Since then "he hastarried with us, pussyfooted andunobtrusive as a Japanese,, spy, picking up information and knit-ting his intellectualtrdw over theincomprehensible things " so dif-

ferent from those on . his , ownplanet. Tins was Mr. "Skygackfrom Mars. It is, however, notclearly known how long he willcontinue his earth study of earthbeings at their earth work's, norhow he will get back- - rs

when he concludes to return. Itwill probably be by the",samemeans'by which he arrived, un-

less by chance he came as a me-

teorite. 'We have conceded that Mr.

' t"' "'

-- H-

V

Skygack is harmless. His cher-

ubic countenance, however, hasproved to be very irritating to oneof our friends, Adolf. The sightof Mr. Skygack aggravatesAdolf. Mr. Skygack is really oneof the trifles of life and Adolfmakes a mistake by noticing him.Adolf can't get used to the ap-

pearance of Mr. Skygack's cala-

bash, which is covered with a fuzzlike a bath towel. Adolf is some-times very brutal towards him,but Mr. Skygack is invulnerable.Like the Phoenix, he smilinglyrises when u light a fire underhim.

Snooping is Mr. Skygack's on-

ly fault. But that is because hehas difficulty observing our eti-

quette . We can't tell him better, because his language is not ours.It is a shrill, barbaric tongue thatsounds like clipping finger nails. It's about as musical as the crack-ling noise which you hear insome telephone receivers. Fewcan communicate with him intel-ligently, although one day a gen-tleman carried on quite a conver-sation with him by filing a saw.

Mr. Skygack is experiencingthe same'difficulties as did Gulli-ver among the queer creatures .en-

countered in his travels. Wemust be very puzzling to him. Forinstance, when we refer to a "BigSmoke," how is he to knowwhether we mean a forest fire,Jack Johnson, Pittsburgh or anickel cigar. Our every action

Page 44: n o b o d y

T ;

puzzles him. When we shakehands he doesn't know-- whetherwe are rubbing, our antennat ortrying to pull each other, limbfrom limb. Street cars to him arejust liittle sardine boxes intowhich we rashly swarm, only toemerge from just as distractedly.False teeth are a strange thingto him he suspects that all of uscan take ourselves entirely apartif we have a mind to. And whatmust be his impressions when hedissects a mince pie?

Naturally scientists take a live-

ly interest in Mr. Skygack. Prof.Dopemoutsky of the Universityof Rawhide, has written a paperwhich argues that Mr. Skygacksfeet are so exceedingly flat fromstanding on a canal boat and pol-

ing it through the canals of Mars.'o o

GETTING DELEGATES ASIT IS DONE BY TAFT

New York, Feb. 10. A littlesidelight was thrown on politicsas politics is worked by ColQnelD. C. Collier, of San Diego, to-

day.Collier is president of the San

Diego fair and exposition plannedfor 1915, and when Collier heardtoday that the senate committeeon expositions had carelesslysidetracked San Diego's plea fornational recognition just recog-nition, not money of their ex-

position, he blew up.Before expressing his feelings,x

Colonel Collier pointed to anotherbit of news in the day's papers. It was that in which SecretaryHilles, for President Taft, claim-- .

&tiiiS&ViJiJGik-- . .

Vried the California delegation toGhicago.

"See that," said Collier. "Thatis the answer to the side-tracki-

of San Diego's request.''President- - Taft ' or his cam-

paign managers I dont' knowwhich entered into an agree-ment with J. J. Moore and J. G.

McNab, president and director ofthe San Franciscofair, tp favor the "world's fair"to be held at San Francosco andrefuse to recognize the San Diegofair.

"In return, Moore and McNabpromised Taft or his campaignmanagers an instructed delega-tion.

"Well, there's one satisfaction.Moore and McNa"b can't deliverthe goods. They can't get an in-

structed delegation from Cali-fornia. California is progressive, and wont send a delegation forTaft."

All of which is very fine, butisn't national politics a grand, big, honorable sort of a proposition.Yes? No?
