PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS My saying this week is timely, given the changing of seasons. “An optimist is the human personification of Spring”. We all know that person who is always positive and sees the good in a situation where others can’t. Being positive brings a host of benefits, with the main one being better personal wellbeing. Optimism 101 includes:

➢ Focus on positives-how we respond to situations is important. Try to reframe negatives in order to learn and grow.

➢ Surround yourself with positive people or find a positive role model. Ask yourself “how would ……. respond to this situation”

➢ Don’t dwell in the past

➢ Focus on the solution rather than the problem

➢ Fake it til you make it-put the action before the feeling. Smile, laugh and speak in a positive tone and before you know it you will be on the road to optimism.

A reminder that our Whole School Assembly plus 2020 Captain Speeches is on Wednesday, 11th September at 12.15pm. I encourage all parents to attend to get a glimpse of our future leaders, see our students rewarded for their efforts and to witness some great student and staff performances. Week 8 (starting Mon 9th Sept) is RUOK week at BCS. A number of activities have been planned including Musical Dodgeball, Treasure Hunt, Wall of WOW, Cuppa & Cupcake, which culminates in a Colour Fun Run being coordinated by our P & C on Fri 13th Sept. Congratulations to our 16s and Open netballers at the NSW Central Schools championships last week in Dubbo. From all reports, the girls gave their personal best in preparation and during the tournament but were also a pleasure to take away. My thanks to Mrs Lisa Joliffe for her coaching expertise, Mrs Linnett for her organisation and the many parents who accompanied this group and supported them in every facet. It cannot happen without good people giving up their time and having a go - well done BCS!

A reminder that Parent Teacher Interviews will be held on Wednesday 11th September from 3.30pm to 6.30pm. The Secondary interviews will be held in the library with Primary being in the teacher classrooms. There is no booking-in procedure for these 10 minute interviews, just turn up and wait with a cup of tea if the teacher is already conducting an interview. We are taking Kindergarten Enrolments now for 2020. Please find the Transition Program Visiting Dates in this Newsletter on page 6. Finally, I would like to express my thanks to our wonderful SAS (School Admin & Support) staff who are an integral part of our school community. Without their dedication and positive outlook, the school just wouldn’t be the great place it is. To coin an AFL phrase without their little “one percenters” the place would not run as efficiently as it does. In AFL it is the smothers, the shepherds, the knock-ons, the spoils, the chase, the bumps and the blocks. At BCS these one percenters take many forms including making phone calls, attending to students in sick bay, photocopying and laminating, doing up shoelaces, making milos, helping students in the classrooms, washing the school car and bus etc.

Year 5/6 Canberra Excursion My favourite part was when we went to Parliament House and got to do some roleplaying and I could argue with the government’s opinion. We did this so we learnt what it is like in the House of Representatives and how it works. I liked making up some of the ideas that I argued and I learnt a lot of interesting stuff about Parliament. I could see that Joseph who was being the speaker was getting annoyed with my arguments because I kept standing up to speak. The Parliament was much more interesting than I expected. I also like that day when we got to go to old Parliament House and learn about how a person in hospital can vote and how if you have been sentenced to jail for over 3 years you can’t vote until you get out. I really enjoyed going on the excursion. Sheridan Dalton My favourite part was the Parliament House. It was so interesting how they would take care of the problems in the country. It was fun standing up and saying reasons why we shouldn’t have rainwater tanks, how we learnt about being the Opposition, Government and the Cross bench side. The first room you would walk into had shiny marble with smooth, blue pillars. The chamber of the House of Representatives and the Senate was interesting to see how everything worked. It was cool how we were taught the roleplay, how it would’ve been in real life in the real rooms. I liked how the Cross benches would choose the Government or the Opposition side, and the side with the most Cross benches would win. At the front would be the Speaker, Clerk, Deputy Clerk, Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister. It would mostly be unusual if the Opposition side won, but when we did our role play the Opposition side won arguing that we shouldn’t force people to pay for rain water tanks. It was great fun. Anna Scoleri

My favourite part of the excursion was when we went to the snow because we found a wombat walking around. Breanna Dixon

The best part was at the snow because you could throw snow balls and push each other over and throw snow balls at random kids. In the snow no one cared if they got a snow ball thrown at them. At the snow there was a wombat that was walking around and eating. Joseph Scalora

SASS Appreciation Week Last week was SASS Appreciation Week and we were thoroughly spoilt. Each lunch break a member of the Executive took it in turns to look after the office so we could all have lunch at the same time. The cleaners gave us a lovely platter of fruit and chocolates, Mrs Matarazzo spoilt us with cheese & biscuit and fruit platters, Mr Comi gave us some lovely flowers and a hug every day, Mrs Helgeland gave us delicious slices and a shoulder massage, Mrs Deb Gaston made us delicious banana bread and then to top it off, teachers brought in a plate for us all to have lunch together. We certainly were made to feel very appreciated and would like to say a huge
