THE COLLEGE EMBLEM

The Emblem of the College symbolizes the aspirations of the Institution.

Thamasoma Jyothirgamaya is a line from Brihadaranyakopanishad. It means 'lead

us from darkness to light'. It is not physical darkness but the darkness of ignorance,

and light stands for knowledge. This premier Institution has been named after the

great saint and savant, Sri Shiridi Sai Baba, the presiding deity and guiding spirit

of the Institution. While the book in the emblem symbolizes knowledge, the lotus

suggests the flowering and awakening of intelligence. Vidyaya Amruthamasnute is taken

from the Isavasyopanishad. It means, by acquiring Vidya (Ultimate Knowledge),

one can attain immortality.

MESSAGE

I am extremely glad to know that our faculty

a variety of topics reflect not only the enthusiasm but

also the strength of the mental faculties of the

contributors. I hope the magazine will serve as a source

of inspiration for future contributors. The Magazine

Committee richly deserves my appreciation and hearty

congratulations.

I wish them all the best.

MESSAGE

The focus on skills is significant in the context of present day

requirements. Working for the college magazine makes

students and teachers more imaginative and informative.

Indeed, writing is a scholastic exercise. I hope the magazine

will be a beginning for both the contributors and the readers

to emulate great writers and become great citizens of this

country. On this occasion, I congratulate the convenor and the

magazine committee members whole-heartedly.

MESSAGE

Writing for College Magazine is a matter of observation,

matured thinking and logical expression of one’s ideas. I am

extremely happy that some of our teachers and students

have undertaken this intellectual activity and contributed

their articles to the magazine. In this context, I congratulate

the convener and the committee members on having

successfully published the magazine. I strongly wish that

their efforts would go a long way inspiring the future batches

of teachers and students.

THE EDITORIAL

The magazine committee feels it is a matter of happiness to

congratulate all the teachers and students on their contribution to the

college magazine evincing keen interest.

The magazine contains enlightening articles, short-stories and poems

on the aspects like self-sacrificing nature of mother, true friendship, the

agony of farmers and weavers, how to be happy, Swamy Vivekananda’s

view of education, women empowerment, the qualities of the teacher and

the student and leadership, CBCS System, National Integration.

We hope that the magazine will not only serve as a tool of

enlightenment but also strengthen the readers’ language generating new

ideas. The students should work on their language skills through constant

practice and explore and exploit everyday communication situations to

reinforce what they have learnt in the college.

We, the committee members, express our grateful thanks to the

Principal, Dr. PPVD. Naga Trisula Pani for giving us an opportunity to

bring out the magazine. We are also grateful to our President Sri P.V.

Ramana Reddy, Correspondent Sri P.L.N. Reddy and Secretary Sri D.V.

Vijay Kumar for their constant encouragement and support in our

endeavour to bring out the magazine. We are also thankful to our

colleagues for their cooperation. We fervently hope that the magazine will

be received by one and all with inspiring enthusiasm.

BE THE CHANGE

--- N. SAI SRI HARSHITHA

II BZC (EM)

Change is inevitable. It should be welcome for

a positive change to make our country a happy

place to live in.

We are very much affectionate and

passionately devoted to our nation, aren’t we?

Every time we feel that our nation is getting

ruined, our culture is being spoiled and our

system is being corrupt.

Then before discussing this topic, let me know,

What is the reason for our birth on this earth?

My answer is – I am here to fulfil the work

assigned to me. I am here to add my drop of

water into the ocean of the world and I am

here to be the CHANGE that is needed

somewhere. Yes, we are all born to fulfil the

rightly assigned responsibility. I feel that this

responsibility brings out a positive change.

For the freedom of this country, many

people sacrificed their lives because they

wanted to see independent India and relish

their existence but did not sit idle and waste

time in discussing what to do and what not to

do. They achieved the change because

“Desamante Matti Kadoi; Desamante

Manushuloi.”

After all, the nation got Independence

and we all are a part of democratic, republic,

sovereign and socialist India. It is unfortunate

to note that India is still under the category of

“developing nation” in the International

forum. Everywhere there are inequalities,

politics, selfishness, corruption, violence

harassments, discrimination and crimes.

Every breath now we take is the result

of the sacrifice of many patriots. Do we

deserve to enjoy the fruits of the sacrifice of

those patriots without commitment and

dedicated efforts.

In order to see our nation as a

developed country, we have to BRINGOUT

CHANGE in every aspect. Change is not

something that comes from the sky. It is an

evolution that comes from within.

What is the change? & How to achievethe change?

1) Respect your country : Jan 26 and Aug 15th

are not public holidays. They are public

responsibilities. To realise what we are?

Where we are? And what we have to do?

These are the National festivals and the

sources of inspiration.

A person may have festivals according to his

religion but every Indian has these two

festivals irrespective of caste, colour, creed,

financial status. Be the change to respect the

country. Get inspired by the Nation’s history

and create a new history.

2) Doing your job sincerely

This is enough to make our country

developed. Being sincere in your work will

definitely make the country to take a step

forward. If you are a student – be the best

student.

If you are a parent – be the responsible parent.

If you are an Officer – be a sincere officer.

If you are a doctor – be a good doctor.

If you are a sweeper – be the best sweeper as

no one can find fault with you.

No matter what work we do, if you are at your

best, then it is the best gift that you can give

yourself and your family that make your

family happy and promote the country. For

that BE THE CHANGE now. It should be

remembered that huge rains start with one

drop. Don’t think of what is going to happen.

Let it happen first.

I don’t want to see the change in the next

generation. I want to see it in this generation.

Let us make a good cause for this

BIRTH on this EARTH.

If you want to change the world – change

yourself first – then the world follows you.

MY MOTHER, MY HERO

--- G. DIVYA SREE

I BZC (EM)

Mother is the truest friend in our life.

Actually, God could not be everywhere in the

world, so he created mother. She starts

showing love toward her babies when they

are in her womb. Motherhood has the greatest

potential influence on our life. I am proud of

many things in life but nothing beyond

mother. Only mother can take the place of all

others. I love my mother as the tree loves

water and sunshine – she helps me to grow

and reach great heights. No matter how old

we become, we always want our mom. When

we don’t feel good, she is there to take care of

us. Mother’s love is precious because it never

fails till she breaths her last. She always thinks

about her children day and night, even if they

are not with her. Mother’s heart is a place

where children always have a safe and

secured home. She is the first person to warn

us when we are going astray. Though we

shout, get angry with her, she just tries to

pacify us with her pleasant smile on her face.

She is the only person who makes us learn

good habits, respect elders, have good

manners and discipline. Life is tough without

her. She holds her children’s hands for a

while, but gives her heart forever. If she is

angry with our behaviour she has a right to

correct us as a judge. She is the only one who

always wants to see us happy in this selfish

world. The letters in ‘MOTHER’ stand for

Magnificent, Outstanding, Tender,

Honourable, Extraordinary and Remarkable.

All the words are dedicated to her. She feels

happy and proud only when her children are

recognised as useful citizens in society. Can

there be any other here in the world ?

A VILLAGE ON THE PLATEAU

--- M. SATISH BABU

II B.Com (EM)

Deccan Plateau

Observe on the Andhra Pradesh sketch map

1 showing major land forms in chapter 4. The

plateaus of Andhra Pradesh are mostly a part

of Deccan Plateau. Plateaus are lands at a

heigh elevation. If you start from Nellore and

follow the Pennar upstream, you will cross

the coastal plain and reach the Vellkonda hills.

You will have to climb the hills to reach the

plateau region of Kadapa and Anantapur

districts. The Vellkonda hills form the

escarpment of the plateau.

Unlike the plains, plateaus are marked

by several small hills, hill ranges and hillocks

interspersed with flat areas between them. As

a result, cultivation and settlement is possible

only in small pockets. They are also more

rocky, with thin layers of soil.

An important aspect of this region of

Andhra Pradesh is that it receives scanty

rainfall and is very difficult to live in such

inhospitable terrain. So, we visited

Salakamcheruvu village in Anantapur

district.

Salakamcheruvu :

After crossings several hills and rocky

stretches, we finally reached Salakamcheruvu,

“30 Km” northeast of Anantapur in

Singalamala Mandal. It is named after a tank

called Salakamcheruvu. The tank is so located

that rain water from the high hills to its West,

North and South flow into it. In 2011 when

we visited this, it was dry. The villagers told

us that it has been dry for the last twenty

years. These soils have little humus or

nutrients. They cannot hold much water and

the roots cannot grow deep and spread. As a

result, many fields need to be left follow or

uncultivated for some years after a crop.

Only small stretches of flat lands have

deeper and finer soils. However, such lands,

have got degraded and become uncultivable

‘soudu’ or saline soils. Saline soils have high

connect of lime and salts and don’t absorb

water. These soils are not suitable for any crop.

Agriculture and Crops :

The farmers of Salakamcheruvu grow only

one crop in the kharif or monsoon season.

Earlier, farmers mainly grew food crops -

millets like, sama, varagu, korra, sorghum,

etc., pulses and a little paddy. Millets need

very little water and can grow on poor soils.

Paddy is cultivated using the water from the

village tank. Besides these food crops, the

farmers also grew some cotton and groundnut

which they sold in the market. Farmers have

reduced the cultivation of millets and other

food crops favouring ground nut and chillies.

Wells and Bore wells :

Tanks store rain water, rising ground water

level. It is very difficult to dig wells in the

plateau because of rocks. In recent years, bore

wells are used for irrigation instead of open

wells. In plain areas in Salakamcheruvu,

water is found below 250 feet. Farmers have

been spending huge amounts of money. Only

5-10 farmers with a lot of land have bore wells

in the village.

25

Climate and Rainfall

The rainy season is from June to November.

However, it rains very little in these parts.

This rainfall is unpredictable as it may or may

not rain properly in a particular year. Because

of the low and erratic rainfall, this part of the

state is ‘drought-prone’. You can see at

Salakamcheruvu how the water from the

surrounding hills comes down and how a

small wall joining two hills creates a large

water reservoir. There are thousands of such

tanks in Ananthapuramu district. Besides

large tanks, there also a few small ponds built

to provide drinking water to animals of the

village.

In the past, villagers repaired the tanks

and streams and regulated the use of the tank

water. This has been neglected for the last

‘thirty’ years’. As a result, the tanks have

become dry.

As rainfall is low, the people of this

region have to store rain water and use

ground water. So, the Govt. should explore

the possibility of supplying water to the

village from some source such as canals so

that the past glory of the village can be

brought back.

FAILURE IS THE HIGHWAY TO SUCCESS

--- B. PRANATHI

I BBA

“If you want to succeed, double your

failure rate.” If we study history, we will find

that all stories of success are also stories of

great failures. But people don’t see the failures

and only see the end result and think such a

person is lucky: “He must have been at the

right place at the right time.”

Let me share a famous life story with

you. This was the man who failed in business

at the age of 21. He was defeated in a

legislative race at 22, failed again in business

at 24; had his sweetheart died when he was

26; had a nervous breakdown at 27; lost a

congressional race at 34; lost a senatorial race

at 45; failed in an effort to become Vic-

President at 47; lost a senatorial race at 49;

and was elected as President of the United

States at the age of 52. That man was

“Abraham Lincoln!.” Would you call Lincoln

a failure? He could have quit, hung his head

in shame and gone back to his law practice.

But to Lincoln, defeat was a detour, not a dead

end.

Colonel Sanders, at the age of 65, had

assets of a beat-up car and a $100 cheque for

social security. He realized he had to do

something to improve his position. He

remembered his mother’s fried chicken recipe

and went out selling. How many doors did

he have to knock on before he got his first

order? It is estimated that he had knocked on

more than a thousand doors before he got his

first order. How many of us put in such

efforts? After one or ten efforts, if we don’t

succeed, we say “We have tried hard but

failed.”

One day a partially deaf four-year old

child came home with a note in his pocket

N ™ê~ÚÉÏÉÏ *ÏfÜ«∞ _ç„w HõàÏâßÅ "åi¬Hõ ãOzHõ : 2016-2017

26

from his teacher, “Your Tommy is too stupid

to learn, get him out of the school.” His

mother read the note and answered, “My

Tommy is not too stupid to learn, I will teach

him myself.” And that Tommy grew up to be

the great Thomas Edison. Thomas Edison had

only three months of formal schooling. He

was the person who removed darkness by

discovering electric bulb.

Henry Ford forgot to put the reverse gear

in the first car he made.

Young Beethoven was told that he had no

talent for music, but he gave some of the

best systems of music to the world.

Do you consider these people failures?

They succeeded in spite of problems. But to

negative thinkers it appears as though they

were ‘just lucky.’

All success stories are the stories of

great failures first. The only difference is that

every time they failed, they bounced back.

This is called failing forward, rather than

backward. You learn and move forward.

Learn from your failure and keep going.

Setbacks are inevitable. A setback, can

act as driving force and also teach us humility.

In grief, you will find courage and faith to

overcome the setback. Learn to become

victors, not victims. Fear and doubt short-

circuit the mind.

Ask yourself after every setback.

“What did I learn from this experience?” Only

then will you be able to turn a stumbling block

into a stepping stone for success. People who

have overcome obstacles are more secure than

those who never faced them. We all have

problems and sometimes feel discouraged.

Everyone faces disappointments but winners

don’t get disheartened. The answer is

perseverance.

An English proverb says, “A smooth sea never

makes a skilful mariner.” “Everything is

difficult before it becomes easy.” We cannot

run away from our problems and

responsibilities.

Most people give up just when they’re

about to achieve success. They quit on the one-

yard line. They give up at the last minute of

the game one foot from a winning

touchdown. – H. Ross Perot.

True success is measured by the

feeling of knowing that we have done a job

well, and have achieved our objective.

Success is not measured by our

position in life but by the obstacles we

overcome to get there. – Shiv Khera

So, life is not a bed of roses.

Difficulties, problems or failures are as natrual

as wings to birds. Work hard with single-

minded concentration and steadfastness.

Success offers you a red carpet welcome.

SPOKEN IDIOM AND GRAMMAR

--- Dr. K. GOPAL REDDY

Associate Professor of English

There has been a strong belief among

the teachers and the learners that to learn a

language, grammar is necessary. If this were

true, all those who have never attended a

school would speak not even a word, let alone

a language. It is our common experience that

the people who live in villages and remote

areas do not have access to education due to

various reasons such as economic status social

condition, ignorance etc. There are some tribal

groups whose spoken languages do not have

any written forms. But all these are able to

communicate well in their mother tongue and

go on smoothly with their life. They do not

even know that there is something called

grammar, which, as others feel, governs the

structure of their language.

A close observation of the study of

languages reveals that any language can be

learnt without the knowledge of its grammar.

When man started speaking, no rules of

languages were evolved. He used only two

skills of language – listening and speaking.

The other two skills – reading and writing -

came into existence at a very later stage. The

factors that account for the spoken form of a

language are the parents and the environs in

which a child is brought up. A child first

learns its mother tongue and the language

spoken in its surroundings. For instance, if a

baby born to Indian parents is brought up in

an English speaking country, it will naturally

acquire the spoken skills of English and

communicate as freely as a native of that

country.

To speak a language, one needs to be

exposed to that language continuously both

in and outside the home. An atmosphere is to

be created where it becomes inevitable - be it

out of necessity or any other reason - to use

the language in order to lead a comfortable

life maintaining good relations with the

society. Spoken word after all is what matters!

One comes across many illiterate workers in

railway stations, bus stands, business

establishments and so on dealing with their

customers happily only because they are

exposed to the target language continuously.

All these instances of the use of spoken

language do not involve the use of grammar.

It is undeniable fact that grammar has

its own role in the learning of a language. It

makes a language more systematic and

scientific. The structure of any language is

based on its grammar. Grammar also modifies

and strengthens and makes a language more

and more attractive. However, its role is

confined more to reading or writing than to

speaking of any language.

Literature reflects the realities of life.

Great literary works present man in his

natural and social environment providing the

society with guiding principles for a life of

equality, peace and harmony. In this regard,

literature has a special appeal for empowering

the women with equal rights as emphasised

in “What is My Name?” a translation of P.

Satyavathi’s Telugu short story.

“What is My Name?” represents a

search for an identity that has been lost. It

shows how a woman is denied her right to

individuality and freedom in spite of her

better capabilities. The story entirely revolves

round “A Woman, educated and cultured and

intelligent, and capable, quick-witted, with a

sense of humour and elegance,” getting

married to a young man, Mr. Murthy. He

marries her for her beauty and intelligence

and also for the dowry her father has offered.

Immediately after her marriage, in spite of her

intelligence and education, her husband

assigns her the duties of a traditional

housewife – swabbing the house, decorating

the floor with ‘muggulu’ designs.

This indicates denial of personal

freedom and individuality to woman in the

male-dominant tradition-bound society.

Thus, the housewife has become a symbol of

the age-old Indian traditions and cultural

beliefs, according to which a woman should

be the most patient, obedient and is expected

“WHAT IS MY NAME ?”

A QUEST FOR WOMEN IDENTITY

to play the role of a loving and sacrificing

mother, a meek and submissive wife and

disciplined house-hold worker. She is also

treated as a trivial figure despite her

advantageous capabilities.

But one day while scrubbing the floor,

she suddenly forgets her name asking herself,

'What is my name?' She herself realizes that

in her scrubbing zeal she has forgotten her

name.

Her efforts to know her actual name

fail as she is known as ‘Amma’, ‘the mistress

of a white-storeyed house’, ‘the

pharmaceutical manager’s wife’, ‘the fair and

tall lady.’ When she asks her husband he burst

into a laughter saying, “What is it, dear, never

has it happened before you are talking about

your name today. Ever since we were married

I have got used to calling only as ‘yemoi’. You

too never told me not to address you that way

because you have a name of your own- what’s

happened now everyone calls you misses

Murthy, don’t they?” This kind of identity of

subservience meted out to the housewife

reminds one of what Shashi Despande, a

highly educated and award winning Indian

English novelist, feels in the similar

circumstances.

“Despite marriage and motherhood, I

felt very incomplete, even dissatisfied. That’s

when I read Betty Friedan’s "The Problem

N ™ê~ÚÉÏÉÏ *ÏfÜ«∞ _ç„w HõàÏâßÅ "åi¬Hõ ãOzHõ : 2016-2017

29

Without a Name", I felt, I’m not only a woman.

I’m not only mother. I’m not only a wife. I’m

not only a female. I’m a human being with a

mind. It gave me a lot of unhappiness that

my intellect wasn’t being connected to my

female self. I was always Mrs. Deshpande,

Raghunandan’s mother, Vikram’s

mother........That anger ultimately translates

into feminism.”

Even the housewife's visit to her

parents’ place for recovering the name from

her certificates fails to yield favourable result.

At last the housewife recovers her

name as her schoolmate, Pramila, happens to

see her shouting “Sarada! My dear Sarada!”

Making a joys return home she asks her

husband.............. “From now onwards don’t

call me ‘yemoi’, ‘geemoi’, my name is

Sarada__ call me Sarada, understand?”

This kind of grappling with the

identity crisis of an Indian woman is

indicative of her intention to exercise her own

rights for the manifestation of her individual

capabilities and the realisation of her feminine

self through identity-assertion and self-

affirmation.

The housewife forgetting her name is

suggestive of the deliberate denial of the

dignity and right to freedom to women in

traditional society like India. Her fruitless

efforts to recover her name are indicative of

how difficult it is to get recognition and

identity for a woman who is always treated

as a subservient being.

This way a young woman in spite of

her better capabilities, is not recognised or

identified as an equally important person. She

is denied the right to live in dignity enjoying

equal rights. Thus, the writer advocates the

rights of individuality and personal freedom

for women for a happy and pleasant life far

away from discrimination.

'National Integration' means that the

people should feel that they all belong to

one country and one nation and that they

should live like brothers and sisters.

Although all institutions have a

responsibility for promoting national

integration, we must admit that the

educational institutions have a special

contribution to make and the teachers have

a vital role to play in developing a sense of

national unity and cultural cohesion among

the students. As members of the academic

committees and as textbook writers, they

should influence the quality of the teaching

material. As skilled craftsmen, it is their

duty to use appropriate methodology to

promote the integrating values like honesty,

truthfulness, broadmindedness, humanism,

objectivity, unselfishness etc. In the hands of

a good teacher, the text is only a pretext.

Under its guise, he can always promote

liberal thinking and create the right kind of

attitudes.

Unlike in industry, in education, it is

difficult to define goals, to change methods

and to ascertain gains and losses. Therefore,

the teachers as individuals and as members

of professional associations should try to

evolve a common strategy where the ‘basics

and the essentials’ are concerned in

strengthening value orientation in

THE ROLE OF A TEACHER IN STRENGTHENING

NATIONAL INTEGRATION

education. They will be confronted with

challenges and competing claims since

education today is placed at the crossroads

of conflicting ideals.

There is no doubt that most of the

conflicts could be resolved and the teacher

is expected to act as a counter to the trivial

and corrupt influences in the society. In the

first instance, the teachers themselves have

to cultivate a spirit of national integration

before inculcating it in the minds of the

youngsters. Those days of sermonizing,

pontificating and mechanically repeating the

copybook top liners are over. Students are

no longer passive recipients of knowledge

and ideas.

The teacher and the student work in

a world which is full of contradictions. They

are caught in a dilemma of conflicting goals

between what they are taught to believe and

what the world rewards in material terms.

We cannot teach worthwhile values without

facing the harsh realities of life.

To facilitate the process of

strengthening national integration, the

teacher, who makes his own efforts as an

individual, should be supported by the

system and the authorities.

CHOICE BASED CREDIT SYSTEM AND ITS ADVANTAGES

--- Dr. K. CHANDRASEKHARA REDDY

Associate Professor of Physics

The higher education curriculum in

the past did not impart the necessary skills

that would make the students employable

adequately. There is a lack of interdisciplinary

choices with very little scope for value based

courses to be taught. In addition, the

evaluation methods were largely based on

memory and the students didn’t learn to think

and analyze on their own. Also, the system

has not been effective enough in empowering

students to think on matters independently.

In view of this, the University Grants

Commission (UGC) has come up with the

Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in which

the students have a choice to choose from the

prescribed courses, which are referred to as

core, elective or minor or soft skill courses and

they can learn at their own pace and the entire

assessment is grade-based on a credit system.

The basic idea is to look into the needs of the

students so as to keep up-to-date with

development of higher education in India and

abroad. CBCS aims to redefine the curriculum

keeping pace with the liberalisation and

globalisation in education. CBCS allows

students an easy mode of mobility to various

educational institutions spread across the

world along with the facility of transfer of

credits earned by students.

Features of CBCS

There is a uniform CBCS for all central and

state and other recognised universities.

There are three main courses : Core,

Elective and Foundation.

There are also non-credit courses available

which will be assessed as ‘Satisfactory’ or

“Unsatisfactory’. This is not included in

the computation of Semester Grade Point

Average (SGPA) and Cumulative Grade

Point Average (CGPA).

All the three main courses will be

evaluated and accessed to provide for an

effective and balanced result.

How does it work?

It has the following basic elements:

Semesters : The assessment is done

semester-wise. A student progresses on the

basis of the courses taken rather than time like

three years for science, arts, commerce or four

years for engineering etc. Each semester will

have 15–18 weeks of academic work which is

equal to 90 teaching days. There is flexibility

in creating the curriculum and assigning

credits based on the course content and hours

of teaching.

Credit system : Each course is designed with

a certain credit system. When the student

passes that course, he earns the credits which

are based on that course. If a student passes a

single course in a semester, he does not have

to repeat that course later. The students can

earn credits according to his pace.

Credit transfer : If for some reasons, he

cannot cope with the study load or if he falls

sick, he has the freedom to study fewer

courses and earn fewer credits and he can

compensate this in the next semester.

32

Sri Sai Baba National Degree College College Magazine : 2016-2017

Comprehensive continuous assessment:

There is a continuous evaluation of the

student not only by the teachers but also by

the student himself.

Grading : The UGC has introduced a 10-

point grading system based on the credits

earned.

The Advantages of Choice Based Credit

System :

The CBCS offers a ‘cafeteria’ approach in

which the students can choose courses of

their own choice.

The credit system allows a student to study

what he prefers in his own sequence as per

his interests.

They can learn at their own pace.

They can opt for additional courses and

can achieve more than the required credits.

They can also opt for an interdisciplinary

approach to learning.

Inter college/university migration within

the country and outside becomes easy with

the transfer of credits. This means that it

will be easier for foreign universities to

come and offer courses in India.

Can opt for one part of a course in one

institute and the other part in another. This

will help in making a clear choice between

good and bad colleges/ institutes.

The students have more scope to enhance

their skills takeup projects and

assignments, vocational training,

including entrepreneurship.

The system improves the employability of

students.

The system will enable potential

employers to assess the performance of

students on a scientific scale.

The disadvantages of CBCS

Not very easy to estimate the exact marks.

Teachers’ workload may fluctuate.

Needs proper and good infrastructure for

a universal spread of education.

The UGC has always initiated

measures to bring efficiency and excellence

in the Higher Education System of India. The

basic motive is to expand academic quality in

all aspects, right from the curriculum to the

learning-teaching process to examination and

evaluation systems. However, so far, multiple

methods are followed by different universities

across the country towards examination,

evaluation and grading system. Considering

this diversity, the implementation of the

Choice Based Credit System seems to be a

better system in assessing the overall

performance of a student in a universal way

of a single grading system.

The development of scientific

thought in modern India can be attributed to

the scientists of this period. Towards second

half of the nineteenth century, Sir C.V. Raman

brought about an unprecedented change in

Indian scientific thought while Dr. Homi J.

Bhabha, known as the father of our nuclear

physics, predicted the future of Indian science.

Dr. J.C.Bose, in the field of plant physiology,

Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, in the field of atomic

energy and industrialization and Dr. Abdul

Kalam, in the field of defence technology,

brought about revolutionary changes to

reawaken the glory of Modern India.

Srinivas Ramanujan

Srinivas Ayangar Ramanujan, one of

India’s greatest mathematical geniuses, was

born at Erode in Tamilnadu on 22 December,

1887. He studied at the Town Hall School in

Kumbakonam, where he proved himself to

be an able all-rounder. However, his love of

Mathematics was unusual. Numbers seemed

to draw him by a strange magnetism. In

school itself at the age of thirteen, he came

across a book called “Synopsis of Elementary

Results in Pure Mathematics” by G.S.Carr.

Though outdated, this book introduced him

to the world of Mathematics.

Three of his research note books are

available to us. They are called Ramanujan’s

Frayed Note Books. In 1911, he published a

brilliant research paper on ‘Bernoulli

Numbers,’ in the journal of Indian

Mathematical Society. This got him

recognition and he became well known in

Madras circles as a mathematical genius.

SCIENTISTS OF MODERN INDIA

--- P. SURYA NAGI REDDY

Associate professor of Physics

Ramanujan had an intimate familiarity with

numbers. In 1917, he fell seriously ill, but the

numbers remained his friend, though his

body betrayed him. Unfortunately, his health

became worse and he returned to India from

England in 1919, “with a scientific standing

and reputation.” He died in 1920. His

mathematical genius is a proof that India is

the birth place and source of great

mathematical ideas.

Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman

Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman,

popularly known as C.V.Raman, was not only

a great scientist but also humanist. He

believed in the promotion of human well-

being and human dignity. He won the Noble

Prize for Physics in 1930. He was the first

Asian to receive this prestigious award.

C.V.Raman was born on 7 -11-1888 in

Tiruchirapalli, in Tamilnadu. He grew up in

an environment of Sanskrit literature, music

and science. Nature had gifted him with great

power of concentration, intelligence and spirit

of inquiry. Even in his childhood, he was

popular as a child genius. He stood first in

the Indian Audit and Accounts (IAAS)

Examination and was appointed as Assistant

Accountant General in the Finance

Department in Calcutta at the age of nineteen.

He sacrificed his high post for his love for

science and joined the Science College of

Calcutta University as a Professor of Physics.

On his journey to England, he was greatly

attracted by the blue colour of the sea. He was

curious to know why it remained blue even

34

Sri Sai Baba National Degree College College Magazine : 2016-2017

when big waves rolled up. Then he got the

intuitive flash that it was due to the breaking

up of sun’s light by water molecules. He

conducted many experiments and prepared

an exhaustive paper on molecular scattering

of light and sent it to the Royal Society of

London. The world of science was

dumbstruck at the brilliance of the great

Indian's mind.

Raman Effect

When a beam of monochromatic light passes

through a transparent substance, it scatters.

Raman studied the broken light. He found

that there were two spectral lines of very low

intensity parallel to the incident

monochromatic light. This showed that

broken light was not monochromatic, though

the incident light was monochromatic. Thus,

a great phenomenon hidden in nature was

revealed to him. This phenomenon became

famous as the Raman Effect and spectral lines

in the scattered light as the Raman lines. While

scientists had been debating over the question

whether light was like waves or like particles,

the Raman Effect proved that light is made

up of particles known as photons.

Dr. Raman was a great teacher and

guide as well. His life is a great example for

us to follow. Even when India was under the

British rule and there was hardly any basic

infrastructure for experimentation, he used

his great mind as his laboratory. He proved

through the example of his life, how our

ancestors formulated great theories using the

power of their mind.

Jagadish Chandra Bose

J.C.Bose, another great scientist of

modern India, brought glory and respect for

the country. He was born on 30 November,

1858 at Mymensingh, now in Bangladesh,

where he had his early education. He had hishigher education at St. Xavier College,Calcutta. In 1885 he was appointed asAssistant Professor of Physics at thePresidency College but refused to take salarybecause it was nearly half of that of anEnglishman. Later on, he decided to becomea scientist to recover the fame that Indiaenjoyed all over the world in the past. Hemade an apparatus to study the properties ofelectric waves. For his paper on “TheElectromagnetic Radiation and Polarisation ofElectric Ray”, he was made a Knight in 1917and Fellow of the Royal Society of London in1920.

He was the first Indian scientist inPhysics to receive this honour. Dr. Bose isfamous all over the world as the inventor ofCrescograph that can record even themillionth part of a millimetre of plant growthand movement. Dr. Bose proved throughgraphs taken by the Crescograph that plantshave a circulatory system too. Crescographhas also shown that the upward movementof sapin plants is the activity of living cells.

Dr. Bose also made many otherinstruments famous all over the world as Boseinstruments, to prove that even metals reactto outward stimuli. Bose’s instruments haveshown, how even steel and metals used inscissors and machinery get tired and regainefficiency after a period of rest. BesidesCrescograph and other Bose instruments, hiswireless inventions too antedated those ofMarconi. He was the first to invent a wirelesscoherer (radio signal detector) and aninstrument for indicating the refraction ofelectric waves. When someone drew hisattention towards this fact, he simplyremarked that it is an invention moreimportant for mankind than the inventor.

TRADITIONAL AND COLLABORATIVE LEADERS

--- P. DADAPEER

Lecturer in Commerce and Management

The modern workplace is changing. As

businesses seek innovative solutions to a

challenging economic environment,

companies are trying different approaches to

increase productivity, engage workers and

encourage growth. The traditional leadership

style of top down management is slowly

evolving into a collaborative approach that

empowers employees and blurs the lines

between the boss and the worker.

As more companies adopt a culture of

open innovation, a new style of leadership is

emerging. Collaborative leaders take a more

open approach in the workplace. Team

building and power sharing are replacing the

traditional forms of corporate hierarchy. The

role of leadership is evolving into a broad

based team building approach that

encourages creative thought in the workplace.

Internal “crowd sourcing” is opening up new

paths to corporate growth and in the process,

creating a new business model that gives

employees more ownership of their work than

ever before. The future is most definitely

collaborative.

Here is a comparative look at eight

major differences between the traditional

leadership approach and the new style of

collaborative leadership.

1. Power

Traditional Leaders : The traditional

corporate approach to power is one of singular

authority. Traditional leaders in the corporate

world believe that their power is derived from

their position of authority. Old school

corporate hierarchy often bestows power

based on longevity with a secondary look at

prior results. The longer you stay with your

firm, the farther up the ladder you progress,

the greater your power.

Collaborative Leaders: The new approach of

collaborative leadership recognizes that

power is great in a collective team. By

encouraging equal participation across all

levels, collaborative leaders allow solutions to

develop from the best ideas of the group and

take a team approach to problem solving.

2. Information

Traditional: Maintaining ownership of

information is the hallmark of traditional

leaders. From a power perspective,

information is power. Releasing information

on a “need to know” basis allows traditional

leaders to maintain authority and control.

Collaborative: Open information sharing is

the cornerstone of collaborative leadership.

Getting everyone on the same page in a project

requires information sharing. Education also

plays a role. The more cross training available,

the more creative approaches to problem

solving can develop and be implemented.

3. Idea Generation

Traditional: Traditional managers will

occasionally entertain suggestions or be open

to ideas from their team. In a top down

hierarchy, the decisions generally come from

the executives at the top of the food chain.

Because information is closely held,

management may know of circumstances that

36

Sri Sai Baba National Degree College College Magazine : 2016-2017

drive the decision making process that may

be withheld from team members.

Collaborative : The art of collaboration gives

everyone on the team a voice. Leaders are

generally open to suggestions and ideas from

their team and recognize that brainstorming

and different perspectives can bring unique

insights.

4. Problem Solving

Traditional: In a traditional corporate culture,

solutions are generally delivered to team

members. These decisions are made in the

boardroom or the executive suite, approved

and passed on.

Collaborative: In a collaborative

environment, solutions are brainstormed

among team members and facilitated by

management. Collaborative leaders recognize

the power of a group approach to problem

solving.

5. Resource Allocation

Traditional: The traditional approach to

resource allocation is generally reactive.

Resources are provided only when deemed

necessary by upper management and often

brought to a committee for approval prior to

deployment. This process takes time and

focus away from a project and can result in

stress being placed on the team by forcing

them to deal with issues or challenges.

Collaborative : A collaborative environment

is based on trust and resources may be

delivered proactively. Team leaders will

enable their teams to flourish by providing

resources and allocating time, quickly. This

allows projects to develop more rapidly, as

employees have access to the corporate

resources (time, money, materials) necessary

to do their jobs efficiently.

6. Rules and Responsibilities

Traditional: Traditional corporate culture

relies on a series of rules, regulations and a

hierarchy that force managers and team

leaders to adhere to specific roles and

responsibilities for both themselves as well

as for their teams. This can stifle the creative

process and result in team members working

in relative isolation as information and

resources are shared and provided on a

“needs” basis.

Collaborative : In a collaborative

environment teams are encouraged to work

together. Information, resources, knowledge,

time and effort are shared. This allows roles

and responsibilities to evolve and fluctuate

based on the greater good.

7. Resolving Issues

Traditional: In a traditional culture, issues

are often dealt with on an individual basis

with no regard to the root cause of the

problem. This keeps managers fighting fires

instead of instituting beneficial change that

could prevent issues from arising.

Collaborative : The basis of collaborative

leadership is trust. Because team members are

given more responsibility for their work,

leaders are often more involved in the process.

This means that as issues arise they are often

dealt with swiftly. Collaborative leaders look

for the root cause of conflict as it arises, and

address solutions promptly to keep work

moving forward.

8. Performance and Feedback

Traditional: Most traditional corporations

practise a semi-annual or annual review

process based on corporate policy. This can

be detrimental to employee morale. If an

employee has had a banner year, but in the

37

Sri Sai Baba National Degree College College Magazine : 2016-2017

last month missed a deadline or a project they

were managing ran over budget, it can result

in a negative performance review. This can

damage morale and increase turnover as

employees who feel they were unfairly judged

may seek greener pastures elsewhere.

Collaborative: The nature of a collaborative

environment means that leaders and team

members are equally valued and work closely

together on a daily basis. This gives the

opportunity for immediate feedback, praise

and constructive criticism. A collaborative

environment is nurturing and offers the

opportunity to share knowledge and educate

members on an ongoing basis. Collaborative

leaders often share their knowledge and

experience by offering ongoing personalized

coaching to other team members.

In this backdop, the modern world has

embrassed collabarative leadership for its

vurtious qualities like team work, trust,

cooperation and for quality accomplishments.

ENGLISH AS A GLOBAL LANGUAGE

--- T.S. SWATHI

Lecturer in English

In the fast changing scenario of

liberalization and globalisation the youth are

expected to be highly skilled in their fields.

The basic education they receive at school

plays a significant role in imparting skills and

also moulding their personality.

English has come to stay as a global

language. Proficiency in English is

synonymous with success in life because there

has never been a language so widely spread

or spoken by so many people as English. It

makes news daily in many countries and is

adopted by many countries. It has a special

role to play in the countries where it has been

accepted as the official language and is being

used as a chief medium of communication. A

growing influence of English can be

anticipated as the sophistication increases in

science and so the society.

The statistics collected by David Crystal show

that nearly 670 million people use English

with fluency and competency. This figure has

steadily been growing ever since 1990. English

now holds a dominant position in every

sphere of human activity. It has reached the

present day status primarily because of two

main factors.

1) The expansion of British Empire in the

19th century.

2) The emergence of the United States as the

leading economic power of the 20 th

century.

Growing demand for English in the context

of Modern Day Development : -

The demand for English has been sweeping

almost all the fields of National life like

politics, international relations, media,

communication, travel and education. Most

of the earlier scientific innovations were made

in Britan and are now continued in America.

The advancements in science and technology

38

Sri Sai Baba National Degree College College Magazine : 2016-2017

and their use of new terminology have been

showing an immediate impact on the

language, adding tens of thousands of words

to the English Lexicon. As these innovations

come down from the English – speaking

countries, those wish to update their

knowledge and learn about new invention

need to learn English well.

By the end of 19th century, there were

nearly 2000 newspapers in the English

language. According to the data compiled by

the encyclopaedia Britannica (1994), about a

3rd of the world’s newspapers are being

published in the countries where the English

language enjoys a special status.
