Leibman, who landed his dream job right out of college working for the NBA’s Washington Wizards, offers these tips for those starting out in the workforce: No excuses. Don’t let the media’s coverage of the economy scare away your job-searching motivation. You only need one job, and one break. Not 25 jobs, not 100. When you take that into consideration, the unemployment rate won’t seem so daunting. Don’t have a back-up plan. Commit to your goal with a resil- ient spirit, not a plan for failure. Of course, you’ll need to pay bills in the meantime, and perhaps answer to mom and dad, so accept other work — temporarily. Over 70 percent of all jobs are filled behind the scenes through personal contacts and networking, says Leibman. But it’s not about who you know, and who knows you. The truth is that networking is all about who likes and respects you. When it comes to your con- tacts, quality is the key. Be likable. To be likable, start by liking yourself. Doing so will come across in your body language and your communication skills, and this will help you both personally and professionally. The next step is to genuinely like others without kissing up or using flattery. People naturally like people who are similar to themselves, so draw on commonalities between you and potential employers to win them over. Stand out. Your resume is not as important as you think. Top employers may receive hundreds or thousands of unsolicited resumes every week. Former Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson, who passed away in 2005 at the age of 89, is one of the men responsible for Earth Day. A former governor of Wisconsin before his successful run for Senate, Nelson was a champion of environmental issues who struggled for years to get his political colleagues to take those issues seriously. Frustrated, Nelson proposed that April 22, 1970 be used as a day for Americans to speak out about the various environmental cri-ses they faced. The massive response to Nelson's proposal raised the eyebrows of his colleagues in Washington, and politicians were forced to address the growing public concern about the environ-ment and act on environmental legislation. In the ensuing decade, Nelson played a significant role in passing important environmental legislation.

Wild Blueberry Cheesecake Tart with Nut Crust Serves 10Crust: 3/4 cup walnuts (or almonds, or pecans) 1/2 cup sugar11/2cupsall-purposeflour 4 ounces melted butter

Filling: 3 large eggs 3/4 cup sugar 12 ounces cream cheese, softened 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla 1 cup frozen Wild Blueberries For crust: In bowl of food processor, grind nuts until the consistency of sawdust. Add sugar and pulse to mix. Add flour and mix thoroughly. Add the melted butter through the food chute and pulse until thoroughly blended. Place nut mixture in a 15-inch springform tart pan.

Preheat oven to 300°F.For filling: Beat eggs until

thick and lemon colored. Beat in the sugar, cream cheese and vanilla until smooth. Pour over crust mixture.

Sprinkle Wild Blueberries on top of cheese mixture. Place tart pan on baking sheet. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until filling is set.

Remove from oven and let cool. Serve with whipped cream if desired.

Buckwheat Pancakes with Wild Blueberry Apple CompoteServes 4Pancakes: 1 1/2 cups 1 percent milk 1 tablespoon sugar 1 tablespoon butter, melted 1 large egg 1 cupbuckwheatflour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon baking powder

Compote: 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 tart apple 1/3 cup sugar 2 1/2 cups frozen Wild Blueberries 2 teaspoons cornstarch 1 tablespoon powdered sugarFor Pancakes: Mix milk, sugar, melted butter and egg together. Using a whisk, combine buckwheat flour, salt and baking powder and mix until dough is smooth. Cover and let sit for approximately 30 minutes.

For Compote: Squeeze lemon juice in a pot. Peel, core and coarsely dice apple. Place diced apple, sugar, lemon juice and frozen Wild Blueberries in saucepan and bring to a simmer. Berries will provide juice when they defrost. Simmer for about 10 minutes or until apples are soft but not mushy.

Dissolve corn starch in small amount of water (2 to 3 tablespoons). Add to compote and stir well until compote thickens. Bring to boil and remove from heat. Cover and let cool slightly.

Melt small amount of butter in a large sauté pan or coat with cooking spray. Place a small amount (more or less for your favorite size pancake) of batter on heated pan and cook until bubbles in batter break. Turn and cook for another few minutes. Serve pancakes with warm Wild Blueberry apple compote, and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Tip: The pancakes and compote are delicious with a dab of vanilla Greek yogurt or sour cream. Bacon also adds a nice balance of flavors.

Create privacy Just because you’re outdoors doesn’t mean that you don’t want a bit of privacy from neighbors or passersby. The good news is it’s easy to create boundaries to your space by using a pergola or outdoor curtains. These options tie in nicely with other outdoor design trends and can give just

the right amount of privacy, cre-ating your own outdoor “room” in which to enjoy the long, sunny days.

Light the night Lighting can really make your outdoor space come alive once the sun goes down. Add depth and intrigue by “lightscaping” from different sources. Con-sider putting up string lights that provide a magical setting that is sure to dazzle guests long after darkness falls. Add an intimate wall lantern next to the patio door or eco-friendly LED garden and

path lights to add a soft illumina-tion to outdoor space.

Grow an herb garden There’s nothing that adds the flavors of summer to food like fresh herbs. One of today’s top trends is to have a container garden so you always have your favorite herbs on hand to freshly pick. Popular herbs that are easy to grow include basil, chives, cilantro, dill, fennel and mint. When planting, use containers that complement your outdoor design. Vintage styles that feature aged patinas are very popular.

FAMiLy FEATurEs

Think ahead with a good yard-care routine this year so you’ll have a backyard oasis through the year for entertaining or simply relaxing and enjoying the hazy, lazy days of summer with fam-ily and friends. There’s simply nothing that compares to running barefoot through the lush green grass, here are some tips to get started:

1) Begin with a good spring clean up, which includes rak-ing leaves and removing de-bris, tree guards and burlap. Just be careful not to remove mulch from perennials or shrubs too early, or to rake your flower garden too vigor-ously. Doing so could damage the soil, tendering new bulbs and emerging plants.

2) Clean, repair, sharpen, lubri-cate and tune all of your garden tools, mowers and trimmers, so they are ready to go when you are.

3) Testing your soil is the start-ing point of any lawn fertil-ization program. Consider testing your soil each time you plant new seed. state Extension services and private labs offer kits that let you mail in soil samples for analysis. The reports will give you an accurate reading of what your lawn needs and how much of it should be ap-plied. While tests don’t have to be done every year, they are a good idea every three or four years.

4) Control crabgrass, dandelions and clover, three of the most common weeds you’re likely to see trying to take hold in your lawn. Crabgrass is best tackled before it emerges from the ground and begins to grow leaves. Conversely, members of the broadleaf weed family — like dandeli-ons, clover, plantain, chick-weed, and spurge – require a treatment that comes into

direct contact with the plant’s leaves, so they must be dealt with, once they’ve made their appearance known. Be sure to choose a product that is best suited for your region, espe-cially if living in the south.

Look for lawn fertilizers with a slow-release nitrogen ingredient for strong roots and long lasting results. Once you get it on the lawn – you’ll be done for the season be-cause the slow-release nitro-gen provides your lawn with controlled, steady nutrition – resulting in thicker, healthier grass. That means no excess growth, and less mowing.

5) set your mowing height at 2 1/2 to 3 inches and mow at the same height all growing season. Try not to remove more than 3/4 inch of grass at any single mowing. When-ever possible, mow during the cooler morning or evening hours to avoid damage to the turf.
