New to Puketapu:

Rynal Prasad

Kia ora nga whanau o Puketapu,

At Puketapu School one of our strategic aims is to provide a learning environment that

enables all Māori akonga to gain the skills, knowledge and dispositions they need to succeed

and to be proud in knowing who they are as Māōri.

Kapa Haka plays an integral part in our weekly programme for our learners to stand tall and

proud as Māori and New Zealanders. This Friday our performance ropu head to Te Huihuinga o nga

Tatarakihi to showcase their kapa haka talent. We would like to thank our student and adult leaders who

have helped them get there.

Ko taku reo taku ohooho, ko taku reo taku mapihi mauria

My language is my awakening, my language is the window to my soul

This is a proverb closely associated with language revitalization, a struggle which is very important in

maintaining culture.

Nga mihi

This Friday: Te Huihuinga o nga Tatarakihi - Taranaki

Primary Schools Cultural Festival

This Friday, at City West Church, New Plymouth. Our performance time has been confirmed

as 2.30pm.

Performers are to be at school by 9am please. We

meet in school hall to get ready. If there are parents

that can help with dressing, hair and doing the moko

stamps, you are most welcome to come help. We are

getting a bus to and from venue, leaving school at

12.00noon.

We would love to see lots of our community coming

to support the group - we have tickets available in the

office for $3.00 for those that are coming ($5 on the

door).

As our school gets bigger, the road outside

school is getting busier.

With more traffic and more people, we all

need to be more careful.

The crossing outside our school is a

kea crossing.

When there is a road patrol (after school) then cars must stop

at the kea crossing.

When there is no road patrol, pedestrians do not have right of

way. Drivers are not required to stop. A kea crossing provides

people with a shorter, and so safer place to cross the road.

Pedestrians: before crossing a road - always stop, look

both ways multiple times, listen and make sure you

are seen before crossing any road or

street.

Drivers need to be ready to stop near

schools, bus stops and pedestrian crossings

or kea crossings.

Remember drivers, your speed limit is always

20km/h when passing the school.

Ngā Ngaru e toru Ko te putaketanga o te whakapono. The 3 waves represent the foundation of our faith.

Pari design for Puketapu - what does it mean? When we step up on Friday we will be wearing uniforms designed especially for us. They have many special meanings and we wear them with pride.

Matua Te Tapu (Taranaki) Ka tū whakahī mātou ngā Mokopuna ō Te Kura ō Puketapu. We stand tall and proud resembling our Maunga as representatives of our School Puketapu.

Call them kutus, nits, headlice… they are an

ongoing problem in our communities. Anyone

can get them and they prefer clean hair – it is

not a hygiene issue. Weekly checking hair can

help prevent headlice. If you see headlice, apply conditioner,

leave on hair 30 minutes. Use a fine tooth comb and divide

the hair into small sections. Comb from close to the scalp to

the end of the hair. Wipe comb on paper towel, you will be

able to see any kutus combed out. Wash hair, rinse and dry.

Repeat this process every day for two weeks.

A message from our Public Health Nurse

Please help us stop the spread of nasty germs: If your child is not well, please keep them home until they are properly better.

To keep all our tamariki safer, the car park and driveway is

out of bounds for all students. Vehicles will also be

prevented from driving into the quad area.

Students and whanau are asked to please use

the main entrance gate, not the driveway, when

walking, scooting, or biking. Please don’t drive

into the car park unless absolutely necessary.
