An earthquake is a natural disaster that is caused by energy in the earth’s crust that creates seismic waves.

Earthquakes are measured by seismographs. They are also measured by the Richter scale and the Mercalli scale. The Richter scale was made by Charles Richter, and the Mercalli scale by Guiseppe Mercalli.

Example of an earthquake
The Japanese earthquake occurred on 11th March 2011 at 2:46 pm. 15,854 people died, 26,992 were injured and 3,115 missing. The magnitude was 9.0.
