Chapter 1: Introduction
Congratulations! You are the proud owner of a new mobile device with
a unique messaging service that will enable you to send and receiveemail messages directly from your mobile device. In order to use thisservice, you must subscribe to a data package that enables you toconnect to the internet.
Never miss an important email again. The MVL Connect Push Mailmessaging service notifies you with a specific sound and a messageon your screen every time a new message arrives. Even when theapplication is in idle or in standby mode, the email messaging serviceon your mobile device is still available. When an email arrives and yourdevice is in Push Mode On, the application will wake-up and notify youthat a new mail has arrived. If the Push Mode is "Off", the application
will check with the server based on the intervals you set.
The Push Mail messaging service is a Java application, so, in additionto an internet connection, the Java connection must be configured.Your mobile device should already be configured correctly, however ifthis is not the case, please refer to Appendix A or contact your MobileOperator.
The MVL Connect Push Mail messaging service operates using anative push notification agent. The email service can be disconnected,or switched to idle, sleep or standby mode. When an email arrives, thepush notification agent wakes up the Java application and enable the
mobile device to receive the email. This document describes the features of your new MVL Connect PushMail messaging service.

3.2.1 Push SettingsPush Settings determines how mail is retrieved from the server. TheJ2ME client is not always active. Therefore there is a native pushnotification agent which notifies the user when a new mail arrives. ThePush Settings dialog in this screen controls how the push notificationagent works.
Note: Please refer to Chapter 5: Push Settings for more information about the push notification agent.
Even though the J2ME client is not always running, the pushnotification agent remains running on the mobile, listening to the MVLConnect server, so that it knows when a new mail arrives to the serverand can immediately notify the J2ME client to "wake up" (becomeactive) and push the new email to the handset. When this occurs, the
J2ME client notifies the user with a pop-up message and a notificationalert.
Note: The user can customize the notification alerts using thenative profile setting. Please refer to Chapter 5: Push Settings.

Chapter 5: Push Case ScenariosThe MVL Connect platform has a Java Virtual Machine (JVM), which isable to run only one J2ME application at a time. In order to ensure that you
will always be able to get notification of new mails, the MVL Connect pushmail system includes an MVL Connect Push Notification Agent.
The MVL Connect Push Notification Agent guarantees continuous pushfunctionality. The push notification agent maintains a connection with theMVL Connect server and wakes up the J2ME client when a new mailarrives. The MVL Connect Push Notification Agent runs under the nativeoperating system of the mobile device and functions according to thesettings configured in the Push Mode Screen.
5.1 Push Notification AgentThe push notification agent is a native application that starts to worktogether with the device. It does not have a user interface and it iscontrolled by parameters set by the user in the Push Settings dialog.
Typical Flow:
1. The user launches the J2ME client and defines an email account.
2. The J2ME client connects to the MVL Connect synchronizationserver and retrieves the latest mail.
3. The user configures the settings in the Push Mode Dialog.
4. The J2ME client reads the settings and saves them.
5. The J2ME client can be disconnected, running in the foreground or
running in the background, the push notification agent workslistening to the server to enable push functionality.
6. When a new mail arrives, the push notification agent sends amessage to wake up the J2ME client based on the saved PushMode settings.
7. The push notification agent alerts the user with a screen message(plus configurable sound/vibration alerts) that a new mail hasarrived.
8. The J2ME is launched and pushes the new mail to the mobiledevice.
The Push Mode can be set either to ON or OFF.If the Push Mode is set to ON then it will be active as specified in theActive Days. During each Active Day, it will be active between the hoursspecified in Active From Active To.
If the Push Mode is set to OFF then the Fetch Interval becomes active andthe push notification agent will check for new mail only at the intervals setby the Fetch interval function.

5.2 User Case ScenariosThere are four (4) possible scenarios that can happen when the pushnotification agent is notified that there is a new email.
5.2.1 Push Mail Java Application is Not Running
When a new mail arrives while the J2ME application is notrunning, the push notification agent displays the followingmessage.
Figure 45: New Mail Launch Push Mail
Press YES to launch the Java MIDlet that will start the J2ME clientapplication.
Press NO to close the pop-up without launching the J2ME clientapplication. In this case the message will pop-up again accordingto the snooze interval set in the Push Setting dialog.
5.2.2 Push Mail Java Application is Running in theBackgroundThe accounts show Stand By mode (not connected to network).
Figure 46: Accounts in Standby
The push notification agent will pop up New email arrived, launchpush mail? dialog.
Click View causes the Java MIDlet to jump to the front.

30
Click Back to close the pop-up, however, because the J2MEapplication is running in the background, the client will retrieve themail before putting the account back into standby mode.
The New email arrived, launch push mail? notification will pop upfor second time after the Snooze interval as set in the PushSettings.
5.2.3 Push Mail Java Application is running in theForeground
The accounts are in Stand By mode (not connected to network).
The push notification agent does not display a message in thisscenario because the MIDlet is already active in the foreground. Itautomatically connects to the account and retrieves the email.
The user is notified by the MIDlet after the email arrived to Inbox.
Figure 47: New Mail Arrived
5.2.4 A different Java Application is RunningThe Java application is running in either the background or theforeground.
If there is another Java application running, e.g. eBuddy and sinceonly one J2ME can run at a time, the push notification agentsends a prompt that reads New Mail arrived, close Javaapplication to get it?.

31
Figure 48: New Mail prompt
If the user presses View the current Java application will closeand the Push Mail application will be launched.
If user clicks Back - the message closes, but reappears again afterthe interval designated in Push Setting under Snooze.
5.3 Notification User InterfaceThe push notification agent is composed of a dialog that notifiesthe user when new mail arrives and prompts the user to launchthe J2ME client. In addition to the dialog, the user can choose tohave the push notification agent play a notification sound and/orvibrate the mobile device.
When the Push Mode is set to ON, the push notification agent canbe set to specific days of the week and times of the day. This isthe peak period. The remaining time is considered off-peak. Whilein peak time, the push notification agent listens and continuously
pushes mail to the mobile device in real time. During off peak time, the push notification agent polls the server periodically accordingto the parameters the user has selected for Off Peak Frequency inPush Settings
5.3.1 Set Sound and Vibrate AlertsThe message alerts for new mail can be customized by the userusing the device's native settings. In order to configure the alertsnavigate to Settings on the mobile device.

5.4 Push Notification Agent JVM Interaction
The push notification agent is required to interact with the JVMand implement the following:
The agent must be able to detect if the J2ME is running
The push notification agent must be able to detect if the J2MEclient is running in the background or in the foreground
