Mustang of the Month: Frank Cossota’s 1965 Mustang Coupe

(by Melinda Morales) This month we are pleased to feature this beauti-ful little pony that is currently being escorted around the car show circuit by MCT member and current Executive Vice President, Frank Cossota. Our December Mustang of the Month is a 1965 Mustang Coupe 289 4V, 4 speed. It’s Poppy Red in color with black interior and it has a vinyl top and style steel wheels. Back in 1994 Frank traded a 1994 SVT Cobra, with removable hard top, for this pony. At the time it was obtained it needed paint, a new interior, and new chrome and rubber. He also add-ed a 4 bbl carburetor. After a year of restoration work Frank is nearly done, with just a little more detailing on the engine to complete. For those of you who are new to the club, Frank Cossota is a founding member of MCT, going back to 1981 when some vintage ponycar enthu-siasts got together to form “Classic Mustangs of Tampa,” which later be-came “Mustang Club of Tampa.” At that time Frank worked for Bill Currie Ford as a Fleet Service Coordinator, and he was elected as our first club President. In fact, if you ask Frank how long he has been in the club his answer is likely to be “always.”

Hello MCT Members!

Well, I’m on Newsletter #2 and I haven’t been fired yet … hummm, guess that envelope needs to be pushed just a little more…On a

serious note, I want to thank those of you who sent such kind notes regarding the November Newslet-ter. I appreciate your kindness. Since joining MCT I’ve always been amazed at the friendliness of our membership.

Another thing that amazes me is the generosity the club shows to the needs of our local charities. With the holiday season upon us I am reminded of the old saying, “to give is better than to receive” and I’m so proud that our club demonstrates this, not only during the Christmas holidays, but though-out the entire year. With this in mind I want to thank Darlene Esposito for being my Holiday inspi-ration. At our Bill Currie Car Show Darlene won

over $500 from the 50/50 drawing and promptly donated it back to the charities. Talk about the holi-day spirit! I wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and New Year! - Melinda

Car shows and Holidays, tis the Season!

Thanks to all who attended our Annual Car Show On November 5th, it was a great success be-cause of you!

MCT helped raise $23,000 and funds are being distributed among the charities that include Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Homeless Initiative, Homes for Heroes and Chil-dren’s Cancer Center. It is great partnering with Bill Currie Ford and we are fortunate with the sup-port they provide the club with venue, free food and other activities during the day to keep the event fun.

I am also proud to announce that The Mustang Club of Tampa won the MCA President’s Award for our outstanding achievement and devotion to

the Mustang hobby and service to the community.

With busy schedules and holidays approaching, we will not have a meet-

ing in November or December. How-ever, the 2016 Mustang Club of Tampa

Christmas Dinner Party will be Saturday, December 10th, 6pm at Gaspar’s Grotto in

Ybor City. More infor-mation is within the newsletter.

Be sure to RSVP to Lucy Carroll if you plan on attending.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year!

Thanks, Joyce Bendishaw, MCT President [email protected]

Nice Boys… Now for

those MCT members who are still waiting for Santa to visit, and who can honestly say they’ve been “nice” this year, let me suggest a trip to Bill Currie Ford to check out the two Saleen Mustangs they have on their display floor. One in black and one in red, ‘cause good

Why do we wish people a “Merry Christmas” instead of a “Happy Christmas”? Because

the two are about the same, but with “Merry Christmas” an extra twinkle is

Good Girls … Christmas came

early this year for MCT member Vicki Wright, who was apparently a VERY GOOD GIRL this year because her husband, Ron, bought her this Mus-tang at the recent Nature Coast Car Show. Perhaps we will have to invite Vicki to hold a training class on this “good” thing because she apparently has it mastered! Congrats Vicki!

gine assembly. The two Fords made a major hard cov-er book which Jerry considers a great honor.

Nowadays, in addition to their other interests, they are the proud owners of a 1965 Caspian Blue Convertible, 289, 4-speed, which is soon to be an automatic! Being older Street Rodder's and Antique car people they picked up their Mustang for the look and availability of parts. Jerry says he always wanted one but, at eight-een years old, couldn’t afford it. See … living the dream!

Jerry and Lorraine heard about MCT from Harry De-Peppe (go Harry!) and joined in November 2016 be-cause they were always “club type” people when it came to antiques and classics. Now they will be look-ing forward to rides and comradeship with fellow MCT members. So the next time you are at an MCT event and run into Jer-ry and Lorraine, take a moment to say hello and get to know them. I can vouch for the fact that they are a real kick! - Melinda, Editor

Meet MCT Members … Jerry & Lorraine May! This month we shine a spotlight on Jerry and Lorraine May. Both Jerry and Lor-raine were raised in Da Bronx, New York. They relocated to Hudson Valley (above West Point) and lived there for twenty seven years before retiring

to Florida.

They’ve been married forty-three years and say it’s been a blast! They both worked in the corporate world with interesting careers, but both have been retired for twenty one years and are now “living the dream”. Lorraine likes to draw and she enjoys gar-dening. Jerry enjoys riding his Harley Davidson Road King and combat shooting.

In the past they owned five antiques/classics while living in New York. A 1940 LaSalle, 1930 and 1931 Fords, a 1956 Chevy and a 1979 Corvette - all in one garage. Jerry has done two ground up restora-tions - from body work to paint, upholstery and en-

Hi Lovely MCT Ladies! Recently the club came out with new 35th Anniversary Shirts and, not to be put off by the fact that they were all the men’s T-Shirt style, I got the bright idea of modifying mine.

So I purchased it, than modified the neckline, then I “blinged” it with chrystals. I wore it at the MCT Car Show at Bill Currie Ford and the modifications were a hit, so I thought I would share the idea. It’s easy and a great way to put some sparkle in your step for the holidays! Enjoy! Happy Holidays!

Mustang Memories … 35th Annual MCT Ford & Mustang Roundup

MCT’s 35th An-nual Mustang, Shelby and Ford Roundup Car Show was held at Bill Currie Ford on Novem-

ber 5, 2016.

As a beautiful day dawned, parking crews parked cars in an orderly fash-ion, registration workers pro-cessed people without any waiting lines, and the judges did their jobs with efficiency, examining each and every car.

Throughout the day eve-ryone took turns taking charity test drives, and in return received a free lunch from Tijuana Flats. It didn’t take long before we hit our goal of 300

drives, and with spon-sor donations of $75 for each drive we raised $22,500 for this year’s charities:

Oh, I’ve been very, very good … and why are you laughing?

- Marilou

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Homeless Initia-tive, Homes for Heroes, Cancer Center for Chil-dren and One-Voice Pe-diatric Cancer.

We also had a spe-cial guest, John Clor, from Ford Perfor-mance, who greeted enthusiasts and signed autographs.

To end the day on an uplifting note, our 50/50 winner, Darlene Esposito, promptly donated her winnings of over $500 back to our charities. Congratulations to all the award winners and thanks for supporting MCT. Thanks also go out to MCT members for your

hard work in making our show so successful. - Mark Morley

(Thanks, also, to Mark Mor-ley, Car Show Chairman, for

all his hard work in making the show such a huge suc-cess! Great job, Mark! - Melinda)

Seven Mustangs participated in the Annual Fountain View Estates Car Show in Tampa on Saturday Oct 29th, 2016.

Present were MCT members William & Cookie Melendez with their ’03, David Webb with his ’96 GT and myself with my ’14 GT. Four other Mustangs with a couple potential new members were there as well.

Weather was beautiful and Paul Figoni did his usual exceptional job organizing the show. A small show of 55 vehicles, the event featured free registration, a Steel

drum band, free BBQ, mac n’ cheese, cole slaw and baked beans. Free bot-tled water, Iced tea & lemonade made talking to all the partici-pants easier.

A nice day to come out and see some beautiful vehicles.

On November 19th, 2016 MCT members met up with the CS4C team to sup-port the 2016 Toys for Tots Poker Run

& Cruise-In Car Show supporting Toys for Tots and Joshua House. The U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program hopes to deliver, not just a toy, but a mes-sage of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming re-sponsible, pro-ductive, patriotic citizens. Joshua House is a safe haven for abused, neglected and abandoned chil-dren. This program offers healing and care in a nurturing and family-like environ-

ment for children aged 6-17 who've been removed from their homes due to crises.

So whether you love to play poker, love showing off your ride while cruising around with other enthusiasts, or love seeing all the cars at a Cruise-in, this event has it all. But most of all this event reflects the big heart of fellow car enthusiasts who are do-ing great things to give back to their com-munities, especially at this time of year, by making the spirit of Christmas bright for children in need. - Melinda, Editor

These runs are always opportu-nities to get to know fellow MCT members better. Case in point … one very active couple decided to change things up on the Poker Run. She drove, and he provided directions. He was so proud, telling everyone what a good job he planned to do … and my first thought was “how cute...” Well, by the end of the run “cute” wasn’t quite the word she would be using to describe her morning. Lucky for them I believe what happens on the trail stays on the trail...especially be-cause I think he likes messing with her mind … yep, one of our naughty boys!

For your enjoyment this is my rendition

of a MCT General Meeting, based on

the famous poem “Twas the Night

before Christmas.” - Melinda, Editor

It’s a Loopy Life ... By Lupe Minute, Lifestyle Reporter

I hate to say this but I think “he” (Santa) just might be a “she”. Think about it. Christmas is a big coordi-nated event that makes you feel warm and fuzzy all over. Like a wedding (and we know what men think of those). So I have a tough time believing a guy could possibly pull it all off! Another problem for a male Santa would be getting there. First of all, the male Santa is never going to get into a vehicle with reindeer to pull him instead of a big old loud engine. And wouldn’t that wake up the children? Kind of ruins the surprise element, doesn’t it? And even if the male Santa made it to his first few stops, you know he would inevi-tably get lost up there in the snow and clouds … and we know how males feel about asking for directions. Add to this the fact that there would be unavoidable delays in the chimney. What do you think all those cookies have done to Santa’s belly? Then let’s talk about the obvious problem with a male Santa … Men can't pack a bag, much less a sack (no, there is no use arguing with me on this one). Still want more? Okay, no man wants to be caught wearing red velvet or having their physique described, even in jest, as a "bowlful of jelly." And no male Santa is going to do the shopping … especially with a bunch of elves. Now, to be fair, with a female Santa Christmas would probably be late be-cause she'd have to fix her makeup and hair after leaving each house. Okay, maybe I’m overthinking this … let’s just stick to Santa Claus being a guy …

‘Twas the night of our Meeting ...

‘Twas the night of our Meeting, at Bill Currie’s place Not a member was stirring, although our hearts raced. The pizza passed out, around the room with such care,

Look at those cookies! There were plenty to share!

Then each member nestled right down in a seat, And Joyce called for order, oh my, what a feat! With our Secretary ready, his pad in its place, Writing the minutes, extra pens just in case.

Then off we went, introductions we’d chatter, ‘Til Phil sprang up to see what was the matter. And away around the room he flew like a flash,

Slipping and sliding on Lucy’s loose cash.

The finances were shared with some swagger and show, Giving hope for the New Year to some spenders I know.

When, up from his chair smiling eyes did appear, And Harry grinned and reported ten new members were here.

With my staff of reporters, so lively and quick, I reported my newsletter would be a real kick.

Loopy stories to amuse us, and Rumors to spill, And Rusty, with humor, would give us a thrill!

And then, in a twinkling, I heard Mark declare, “Our club shirts are here, we’ve got something to wear!”

As I threw up my head, and was turning around, Up on the table he came with a bound.

A bundle of shirts he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

He was open for business, those shirts how they flowed, And he was so happy, his face how it glowed!

Then more rapid than Mustangs, we came to events, And Frank whistled, and shouted, and called to the gents! “Did you go on that cruise? How about those two shows?

Let’s hear your impression so everyone knows!”

Robbie told of a Cruise he has planned as a treat, The drive we would take, oh the food we would eat!

And in the flash of a moment, Paul’s camera was there, “Let me capture a picture, on our Facebook I’ll share!”

“Well don’t forget me!” our Webmaster cried As he twisted his head and gave a wink of the eye!

How I laughed when I saw them, all so cheery and bright, And I knew, without doubt, this had been a good night.

Then alas Joyce sprang up, and to us gave dismissal, And away we all flew, like the down of a thistle.

But we heard her exclaim, ‘ere she drove out of sight, "Great Meeting to all, and to all a Good-Night!"

This month I thought I would give you a little history and up-date on my race car. I bought a 1969 Q code (428 CJ) body from Hubert Platt who was a member of the Ford Drag Team in 1969 that had been

used by Ford as a Boss 302 test car. The Gulf-stream Aqua Mustang had no quarter scoops, the front fenders were rolled, hood, deck lid and tail-light panel was blacked out and it had a steel front spoiler. Hubert saved it from the crusher! I re-moved the drive train in July 1971 from my SS/FA

Mustang that I bought from Hubert in November 1969. This was the first race I went to before it was painted. (See Picture #1)

I received best appearing car after it was painted during the NHRA points race in Miami. (See Picture #2) I went to the World Finals in Texas and they want-

ed me to add the quarter scoops since all Mustangs’ except the Boss 302 had quarter scoops.

The Rusty Report

By Rusty Gillis

#2

After a lot of discussion they let me race but said I had to have scoops before I could race again. I went to Pomona and won class. (See Picture #3) This is how the engine looked at Pomona in 1972. (See Pic-ture #4)

I raced the car until NHRA changed the Super Stock rules in 1975. It was parked until around 1992 when I decided to re-build it to race in Stock and ran it off and on until around 2000. Unfortunately

the paint cracked and I stripped it and painted it white. (See Pic-ture #5) In 2005 I painted it in my shop close to the way it was raced in the 70’s. I went to a few car

shows and raced a little until 2008. After that I removed the engine to have it re-built. (See Picture #6) The engine in now on the dyno and so far makes 512 HP at

6200 rpm’s. This is how it looks in the shop now. My plan is to race in B/SA next year. (See Picture #7) (We look forward to hearing all about it—Go Rusty!)

I’ve had a particularly

Frank has owned approximately twenty-five Mustangs (mostly Fastbacks and Convertibles) over the years and still enjoys showing his current car at local car shows. It takes a lot of time and dedica-tion to keep our ponies looking their best, but no matter how many cars Frank has restored he is still always willing to spend whatever time is necessary keep-ing his pony at its best … and it shows! Luckily, Frank is retired now and able to enjoy his Mus-tang hobby with his lovely wife of over 50 years, Carol. Thanks for your dedication, Frank, to the hobby and our club!

Gift exchange: If you wish to participate in the gift exchange bring a gift. Mark it “male” or “female” or “either.” Value should be no more than $15. We are also collecting unwrapped toys for kids. Bring one if you wish. Parking: There is parking behind the restaurant for $6. There are free parking areas within three blocks. Looking forward to seeing everyone there! Snapshots

MCT Gives ... On Friday, November 18th, 2016 our President, Joyce Bendishaw met with Derek Four-

nier and Cheryl Stewart. Representatives of the What The Buc? Really Matters Foundation. After a very suc-cessful Car Show at Bill Currie Ford, this was MCT’s opportunity to provide this Foundation with a check for $1,135 which was raised from our 50/50 sales.

For those that aren't familiar with this Foundation, they have sent goodies to the troops overseas, packaged food for Africa, lent their voice to pediatric cancer, helped with the battle against domestic violence, raised money for the American Heart Association, grown beards for Movember, worn pink bras in October and pro-vided toys for little ones during some scary times. Congratulations to all the MCT members who supported the 50/50 ticket sales. It is wonderful to be part of an organization like MCT who enjoys our hobby but also never forgets those in need.—Melinda, Editor

A Mustang Man Present ... (Zero to 60 Designs creates a fusion of Ford GT and Mustang) From Facebook, Autoblog, original article by Joel Stocksdale This car, which Zero to 60 Designs has produced for this year's SEMA show, is called the GTT, for Gran Turismo Tribute. It takes some of the most iconic design cues of the Ford GT supercar and incorporates them into the Mustang. Whether these two great de-

signs look great together is up to the beholder, but it's worth noting that the company claims to have designed and built it in just six weeks. Impressive. Zero to 60 Designs also made sure to give the GTT some added performance to back up its supercar-inspired looks. The 5.0-liter Coyote V8 gets a supercharger from ProCharger, Magnaflow dual ex-haust, and an ECU tune from SCT Performance. These modifications are claimed to be good for over 800 horse-power. The company also upgraded the car's handling and braking abilities with Eibach Pro-Street-S suspension, Brem-bo brakes and Pirelli P-Zero tires.

For people that do like the look of this package, we have good news: Zero to 60 Designs plans to offer a limited run of GTTs to the public. The company expects to start produc-tion in early 2017, and it will have pricing available by Christ-mas. It could make for a good consolation prize for someone that missed out on a GT in the first round of applications. Or it could be a fun matching daily for some-one that did snag a new GT.

(Okay, Mustang Men, place your orders … - Melinda)

From my house to yours … On a

final note I would like to wish you all a safe and happy holiday season and a prosperous new year! - Your Editor, Melinda Morales
