• Architect : Wheeler Kearns Architects.• Located in Ogden Dunes, Indiana• Site: 8100 sq.ft.• Building: 3750 sq.ft.• Date of Design: 1991• Construction Completed: 1992

Design Concept

• Site backs onto Lake Michigan.

• Originally to be a one storey house.

• 3 storey scheme developed to take advantage of cost-effective, compact volume, as well as maximize extraordinary views.

• Ground floor accommodates grandmother confined to wheelchair.

• 2nd floor comprises master suite and 2 children’s bedrooms.

• 3rd floor provide uninterrupted view of Lake Michigan.

Site Orientation

• The house sits a top a relatively flat terrain of a gradually sloped site which runs down to the shore of Lake Michigan

Circulation through core of House

• As you a approach the building, you get a nice view of the horizon over the lake

• Upon entering the building, you come to a straight run stair well.

• The stairwell takes you straight up to the 3rd floor and right on to the deck overlooking the lake.

Stairwell

• 3 foot wide zone through the center of the house combines the stair, hallway and light well.

• Straight run designed to gradually reveal view of the lake.

• Middle landing of the stairs serves as a hall with entries to the master suite and bedrooms.

• View from southeast corner of third floor shows and daylight shines through the light well as well as the skylight while providing a nice view of Lake Michigan.

• 3rd floor provides a breathtaking view of Lake Michigan during a wonderful evening sunset.

• Go sailing out on Lake Michigan on beautiful day like this with glistening water in front of the landscape which hides the private areas of the building but still exposing the focal point, being the 3rd floor and deck.
