Last month marked the conclusion of judging inthe 2015 Cork County Council sponsored anti-Litter Challenge. Following our first placelast year, Blarney continues to lookexceptionally clean this year and we thank allwho have contributed so far this year. To ourSolas, Tús, Gateway community employmentpeople, and our Tidy Towns volunteers, manythanks. We will not know the final result untilSeptember. Fingers crossed!

Great to see the young students from Scoil ChroíÍosa hard at work sweeping and tidying up thearea around their school. Thanks to HughCronin and the students for their commitment.

Well done to the Council and Gateway staff forthe nice job completed in Riverview Estate, andthanks also to a number of residents who didsome weeding.

A huge thank to to Adam, John and the team atBlarney Castle Estate, as we now have two veryattractive planters and seating, in front of theChurch of Ireland. Our entry to the NationalTidy Towns competition will be enhanced bythese.

The Castle Close flower bed received a makeover and is looking fabulous.

Dan Ahern gave the sign on ‘Golden Panda’ corner a gorgeous new flower bed to sit in lastmonth, what a great first impression of the village for those who come in from Tower.

Love our unique Garda flower boxes. It’s theselittle things that make you smile!

And last, but certainly not least, thanks to thefabulous young people of Woodfield, StationRoad, Blarney pictured after their estate cleanup last month. There was a great turnout andfantastic work done.

Warfarin Management

- No longer a Pain!

Last August, PharmacyFirst Plus Douglaslaunched the firstcommunity pharmacybased Warfarin Clinic inCork City, and only thesecond in Ireland. Many ofyou will know of theordeal some people have intrying to manage theirWarfarin.

Warfarin is a trickymedicine to manage.Routine blood tests areneeded and for patientsattending hospital clinicsthis can be difficult tomanage and can involvehours of waiting around to get tested and then get results.

Thankfully there is now an alternative option in Douglas, wehave so far taken referrals from CUH, South Infirmary, MercyUniversity Hospital, Bons Secours, GPs and even MallowPrimary Healthcare Centre.

Our clinic is done on an appointment basis, where our averageclinic time is less than 5 minutes and results are obtained rightaway. Our specially trained pharmacists then change the doseof the drug if necessary and schedule the next appointment allbefore you leave.

The cost of a clinic is just €25 for a test and just €10 if you needto be retested within a month, this is capped at €45 per month, you will never be charged more than that.

If you would like to know more, for yourself or for a familymember or friend on Warfarin [email protected] or else call your local PharmacyFirst Plus for more details.

Brighter, Whiter Smiles! Our Smile is often the first thing others notice. Whiter, brighter teeth cangive us more confidence and make that smile all the more ready to appear.A beautiful smile is now much more readily achieved than ever before.

The first stage to obtaining a beautiful smile is to ensure that the teethand gums are healthy. Visit your dentist regularly for a check up so thatany cavities or gum problems can be treated early before they turn intobigger problems. The sooner problems are detected the simpler they are totreat and the less noticeable they will appear. Everybody with PRSI coverand a Medical Card (over 16 years old) is entitled to a free dental check uponce a year.

There are many causes of tooth discolouration. The most common aresmoking, coffee, tea and red wine. An extensive scale and polish cansometimes remove the majority of these stains without any furthertreatment required. Deeper more extensive discolouration however mayrequire further treatment such as tooth whitening.

Tooth Whitening is suitable for most people as long as the teeth andgums are healthy. So called whitening products are available in thesupermarkets and Pharmacies, these have been found to have limitedaffects on discolouration due to the amount of bleaching agent contained.EU directives have limited the strength of whitening agents sold over thecounter to less than a tenth of that which can be prescribed by your dentist.

The steps involved in tooth whitening are simple. Impressions of yourteeth are taken by your dentist from which special custom fitting trays (likethin mouthguards) are made. Whitening gel is then placed in your customtrays which fit snugly over your teeth. The whitening gel breaks down andoxygen ‘dissolves’ the stains inside your teeth. You can wear the trayswhen you want to, over night or any time during the day. The whiteninggel is available in different strengths and your dentist can recommend thebest product to suit your teeth and lifestyle. Everybody’s teeth will whitenat different rates but on average excellent results are obtained after about5-14 days. The results will last indefinitely although can be refreshedwhen required if restaining occurs (coffee/tea/smoking!) Clinical studies have shown that bleaching using this method is safe forteeth and gums. A minority of people may experience temporarysensitivity to hot and cold.

Blarney Sessions 2nd July 1915 Honest Man or German Spy; Found-onsBefore W.J. O’Hara, R.M., Presiding, E. Pike and D. Ross.Edmond Downey, Tower, was charged by Head Constable Woods withhaving made statements likely to prejudice recruiting of His Majesty’sforces on June 26th while travelling from Coolflugh to Tower on the Corkand Muskerry Light Railway.Sergeant Hogan deposed that he was returning from Cork in the 6.15 p.m.train. He was in plain clothes, and the defendant joined the train. A lady inthe compartment began speaking about farmers’ sons stating that they weretoo cowardly to go to the front and that it was the labouring men who hadthe courage to go. The defendant, who was also in the same compartmentsaid, “What did the English do for Ireland? What did they do hundreds ofyears ago, when the soldiers carried babies and children on their swords? Itis all lies what you read in the papers about what the Germans were doing.”The lady then said to the defendant, “You are a German so?”And, he answered, “I am not. I’ll say no more. If there was a policeman herehe would arrest me, but I hope the Germans will win. God would not beabove if they were not getting what they were. The English have no singingover the waves, no. The Germans command the seas.”A girl in the compartment then interjected, “You are a German spy.”“No,” defendant answered, “but I am an honest man.”The defendant kept on speaking in the same strain ‘till at Tower. When hewas about to leave, the Sergeant arrested him.Cross-examined by Mr. Cororner, Wm. Murphy, Solr., who defended ,witness admitted that the defendant was of good character. He worked in thefactory and ceases work early on Saturday afternoon, and he was very muchunder the influence of drink on the occasion.Mr. Murphy said the case may present a serious aspect, but it was not at allso serious as it would appear at the first blush. The case was different fromthat of other prosecutions going through the country, in that there was nointerference with a Recruiting Sergeant, or an interference with some youngmen who were about to enlist, and did not in consequence of the statementsmade. The defendant, who was a good charactered man, unfortunatelyavailed of his half-holiday in the factory to go and get drunk in town. Hisidea, in speaking in the compartment as he did was to arouse a controversy, and the remarks were not expressing his true sentiments. The defendantwhen he was a young man served two years in the 3rd batt. R.M.F., and atpresent had a brother who served through the Boer War, and who, though amarried man, re-enlisted, and was serving in His Majesty’s forces. Besideshe had four cousins serving in the army as well as four nephews – three ofwhich were in the navy and one in the army - and in addition he had threebrothers-in-law which were also on active service, while he himself wasworking in a factory which was engaged in turning out khaki for soldiers. What happened on the occasion was nothing more than a drunken freak, andhe submitted for a mitigation penalty. The Chairman said that the majority of the Bench were in favour of sendingthe defendant to gaol for two calendar months with hard labour, andremarked that such offences were not to be permitted.

Ellen Hegarty, licensed publican, White’s Cross, was summoned by D.I.Simey for a breach of Licensing Laws committed on Sunday 13th June.Michael Noonan, Ballycaskin; Denis Flynn, Konockaneigh; TimothyHumphries, Longstone; Denis Gleeson, Ryefield, were summoned forhaving been illegally on the premises. There was a further summons againstDenis Gleeson for having on the occasion given a false name and address.Sergeant Cahill, who prosecuted in the absence of o complainant, said thaton the day in question he was on duty at the village of Whitechurch, accompanied by Constable Fennel, and entered the defendant’s licensedpremises. The front door was open and there was no one guarding it. Insidehe saw the defendant, Michael Noonan, who lived about one and a halfmiles from the house drinking something from a measure behind thecounter. When he saw witness, he ducked his head and disappeared out theback door, which was also open. Witness then intercepted the defendant,Timothy Humphries, making his way for the back door, and whenquestioned, said that he had just come in and did not get any drink. The

publican, when asked to account for the presence of these men, said she didnot see them at all. Asked to account for having the door open, sheanswered, “she could not be always at it.” Constable Fennel then drew hisattention to man sitting down in the premises, and he (witness) questionedhim, and he answered that he was Denis Murphy, Rathduff, and wasworking for a man named Walsh at Donoughmore. The publican did notexplain that man’s presence on the premises, and he, (witness) afterwardsascertained that the man was Denis Gleeson, living about a mile from thepublic-house. He also found the defendant Noonan on the premises. Therewere about forty persons inside. There was a drag hunt and sports at thevillage on the day.Cross-examined by Mr. Julian, solr., who defended, witness said he believedthere was a score of bowls out to the village on the occasion.Constable Fennel corroborated, and said he did not see the defendantNoonan on the premises.Mr. Julian, for the defence, said that there were three attractions at thevillage – a drag hunt, a cycle race and a bowling match, on the day inquestion, and a large crowd gathered on the village. The publican, Mrs.Hegarty, took charge on that day on account of the large crowd. The sanitaryarrangements were at the back of the premises and the people in the barwere moving backwards all day long, and it was while this procession wasgoing on apparently, these men (the defendants) took advantage of the doorbeing opened and stole in. They were permitted to come in by the publican– she knew absolutely nothing about them. Persons with a thirst for drinkwould on occasions like this resort to any subterfuge or any dishonest act toobtain it.The publican, Mrs. Hegarty, bore out the facts stated by Mr. Julian and saidshe was standing at the door when the Sergeant came in, and she was at itwhen he called her away from it to go to the back door. The defendant, Michael Noonan, said he was a teetotaller; the publican washis cousin; he went in only for a bottle of lemonade as he was thirsty. Theother defendants pleaded guilty.Mr. O’Hara (to the clerk) – What is the defendant’s record?Mr. Julian – You are not entitled to ask for the record unless you havedecided.Mr. O’Hara – We have already decided.Mr. Julian – If that is the case, then all right.Mr. O’Hara – You should not assume that I would do such an illegal act.Mr. Julian – It is a more regular practice to make known your intentionbefore asking for the record. The Clerk then mentioned one conviction, for which defendant was fined£3.The magistrates then retired, and on return to Court the Chairman said theyhad taken a lenient view of the case. It was questionable whether they wouldrecord the conviction or not, but under the circumstances they would imposethe same penalty as on the last occasion, £3, the conviction not to recorded. The men found on the premises would be fined 2s. 6d., and the defendantGleeson, who gave a false name, would be fined in addition, 5s.The above article appeared in the Cork Examiner of 2nd July 1915.

May was a difficult month in the gardens with areturn to quite unsettled and cool weather. Thismeant that we delayed planting out a lot of ourtender tropical plants and bedding. Things seemto be settling down now though and we are in theprocess of playing catch up. We are planting upall of our display beds with mixed bedding and will soon be putting outour hanging baskets. In the beds we generally use a mix of begonias, petunias, lobelia and geraniums. The secret to a good display is regularwatering and feeding. We use phostrogen plant food every second weekthrough the growing season. We also use the largest baskets possible asthey are so prone to drying out.

The regular maintenance work of grass cutting, strimming, edging andweed control is now taking up a large portion of our available time and itreally is a question of juggling jobs to try and keep things tidy. Althoughit is hectic, it is also the time of year when you start to see a lot of resultsfrom your winter and spring projects. Our rhododendron and azalea beds have been amazing so far this year. There is still good colour there and its well worth popping in to seethem. We have planted huge numbers throughout the grounds over thelast three years and it’s very satisfying to see them starting to fill out.The four new Belgian beds have flowered well and we intend to addmore this year.

The Seven Sisters Garden has already become a focal point for touristswith the stone circle providing a perfect photo opportunity. All of thegrass beds are now planted and starting to put on growth. I can’t wait tosee how things develop!

The glasshouses are looking full and we have peaches, nectarines, apricots, grapes, strawberries and assorted vegetables all coming alongnicely. There was good bloom in our new heritage apple orchard thisyear, so we are hoping to improve on last year’s crop.

Jobs for June will include sowing outdoor vegetables, pruning grapevines and pinching out tomatoes and cucumbers side shoots and start tofeed with seaweed feed or similar. Spray the potatoes for blight ifnecessary. Keep an eye out for pests as the weather warms up. Weintroduce biological controls for aphids and mealybug in ourglasshouses. Spray roses for blackspot and aphids or use soap suds if it’sa small infestation. Plant out bedding if not already done; keep up tospeed with watering both in and outside. Newly planted or potted plantsare especially prone to stress from drying out.

Our annual Summer Garden Fair ‘Blarney in Bloom’ is on the 11th ofJuly. There will be a lot of additional features this year, with aprogramme of gardening talks from expert speakers, interactive arts andcrafts displays, specialist plant nurseries, the birds of prey returning, livemusic and children’s entertainment and a hog roast. It is all in aid of theIrish Guide Dogs for the Blind and should be a great family day out.Anyone wishing to take part please drop me a line at:[email protected]
