For over half a century, CMC has brought world-class chamber music to Corvallis. Our motto is “Music Up Close,” which we believe emphasizes the unique personal experience of chamber music. The only way to get closer to music than chamber music is to play it yourself. Our six concerts will present four string quartets, a piano trio, and a reed quintet. Four of our ensembles – the Jasper Quartet, the Atos Piano Trio, the Ebene Quartet, and the Ariel Quartet – will perform here for the first time. Our ensembles come from the U.S., Germany, France, and the Netherlands. You will hear six pieces for the first time in the history of CMC, including the great Quartet No. 2 by Benjamin Britten, a new work for string quartet by the jazz composer Billy Childs, and, for something completely different, arrangements of works by popular composers ranging from Harold Arlen, to Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Lennon and McCartney, and Bruce Springsteen. The Ebene Quartet sings, too! This season continues the commitment of CMC to combine a variety of ensembles with a combination of core repertoire and modern and contemporary works. My watchwords are ‘Not too conservative, and not too edgy.’ It would be easy to ask all of our ensembles to play Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms, but if we did that, we would neglect superb music written by modern and contemporary composers. Our ensembles want to play it, and you should have a chance to hear it. Walt Whitman said, “Great art needs a great audience.” CMC has a great audience. A classical music series is always somewhat fragile, and CMC is no exception, but you keep it going. Thanks for supporting CMC, and thanks for listening. – Chris Rochester, Program Director CHAMBER MUSIC CORVALLIS Music Up Close and personal! Introduction to the 2013-2014 Season

Welcome to the 55th season of Chamber Music Corvallis.
