Upfrontby Emmanuel Legrand, Music & Media editor -in -chief

Phil Spector wanted to get "back to mono." These days, though, the new motto is "back to analogue." The twistis that the road back to analogue is now digital.

Sony's launch last week of the SACD sound carrierformat in Europe came with the promise that this newcarrier will transport the audiophile "back to thefuture" to the sound virtues of analogue recordings.

One of the consumer's first reactions will be to feelconned by spin doctors who have hailed CD as thesource for "perfect sound quality." Which begs thequestion: if CD is so perfect, why do we need SACD?

CD was a revolution that radically transformed themusic industry. But as far as sound was concerned, itwas far from perfect, simply because digital compres-sion-needed to store all the information on the carri-er-had scrapped the high and low frequencies whichmade the analogue sound so special.

Record producer James Bourne is a great supporter

of the new SACD format in that it offers all thewarmth that analogue sound carriers delivered, whileallowing for tweakings from digital technology.

But Bourne also offers a theory for the developmentof digital sound carriers. In his opinion, carriers will bedeveloping in two parallel ways: one by using the com-pression technology, with "low quality" products rang-ing from current CDs to downloadable MP3 files (andthe more you compress, the lower the sound quality);and the other with carriers such as SACD, which takessound to another level.

But getting a better sound doesn't come cheap, foreither the hardware or the software. The "real" soundwill be more expensive than the mass market clones,so it's like paying twice the pricefor so-called organic products.

When it's possible to downloada full SACD carrier via a comput-er or a telephone line onto aportable device without losing anynuance of sound, then both worldswill converge. Until then, if youwant the best sound and can'tafford SACD, stick to vinyl.

Gassner: `13MG behaves like its market'by Emmanuel Legrand

NEW YORK - Revenues at BMGEntertainment's international divi-sion remained stable during1998/99, with sales of $2.4 billion(euros 2.496bn), while the compa-ny's global turnover increased by6.9% to $4.6bn from $4.3bn.

"Outside the USA, we sufferedfrom the macro -economic climate,"BMG Entertainment Internationalpresident/CEO Rudi Gassner tellsMusic & Media. Yet he adds that the"profitability of the internationaldivision has improved by 25%." Hesurmises: "Strained purchasingpower in Asian and Latin markets, also affected Europe especially inthe Netherlands and Germany."

Gassner says that while thecompany's strategy to invest indomestic repertoire has paid off-

with successes such as ModernTalking from Germany and ErosRamazzotti from Italy-it stillneeds time to develop.

In Europe, Gassner admits thatoverall, BMG `behaves like its mar-ket and conditions were not kind toeverybody." He also predicts thatbefore the end of the year, BMGshould post higher chart shares,"especially in Europe."

He believes that the company isbenefiting from managementchanges in some European key ter-ritories. Last year, BMG changedits reporting structure in Europe.Previously, there were three unitsand now the company operateswith only two management umbrel-las in Europe: one for UK/Irelandand central Europe, headed byRichard Griffiths; and one for GSAcountries and Eastern Europe, with

BMG Entertainment Germanypresident Thomas Stein at thehelm. "I couldn't be more happywith Griffiths and Stein," enthusesGassner. "For me, people are moreimportant than structures."

In the UK, Griffiths is creditedfor having reorganised the compa-ny, bringing in new executives suchas Ged Doherty, managing directorof Arista. In France, Griffithsappointed Bruno Gerentes, formerMD of Polydor, who has stoppedthe French affiliate's decline.

Gassner believes that the newstructure in Europe will pay divi-dends: "I'm looking forward tomajor achievements in Europe. Inthe UK, we've already seen animportant turnaround taking placeat RCA, and I also think we'll beable to increase our market sharein Germany."

Fun extends its on-line roleby Remi Bouton

PARIS - "I don't want to provokethe record industry but I also don'twant to send my Internet audienceto other web sites when they wantto buy records which Fun plays,"says CEO of France's Fun Radio,Axel Duroux. The dance groovestation is gearing up to launch i-Fun in mid -October as a retail sitefor music and videos, and alreadyhas the support of two indie labels, according to Duroux.

"Obviously the majors are stillcautious, but they will have toaccept it one day or another," saysDuroux. "Our web site is alreadypopular, but we want to go further.Today Fun Radio is more than aradio station, it's a brand that wehave to develop through all media, from satellite and DAB to Internet."

i-Fun will be an on-line exten-

sion of the station's database, downloading extracts from musicand videos. Duroux explains that,in his view, this is the evolving role

of the radio station in the Internetage: "We want to show the recordindustry that we are now ready tosell downloaded music and considerthis to be the role of a radio stationtoday. We don't want to contraveneany rights system, and we certain-ly won't do anything without theauthorisation of rights holders."

Duroux describes the Internetas "a fabulous tool" and firmly

believes that "it is more friendly fora Fun Radio listener to buy arecord spun on the Fun websitethan to go to an outlet or a record

company website."Duroux is satis-

fied with theprogress of bothFun and (AC)RTL2. "Our pro-gression in termsof audience isalready bringing

in new revenues for both formats,"says Duroux, who claims thatRTL2 advertising revenueincreased by 60% during the firsthalf of 1999 at Ffr 100 million(euro 15.24m). What's more, Funwill break even in 2000 with agrowth of 43% on first 1999 half -year (compared with the sameperiod in 1998), according toDuroux.

A R

Supergrass still making hayby Christian Lorenz

Supergrass inject a healthy dose of R&B intotheir brand of no-nonsense rock'n'roll andshow that guitar -based music can still cut itin 1999.

The trio are about to release their third

album on Parlophone acrossEurope come September 20th. TheCD is simply titled Supergrass, and follows up their high-octaneteen punk/Britpop masterpiece IShould Coco (1995) and the moreintrospective In It For The Money(1997). Lead singer and guitaristGaz Coombes, drummer DannyGoffey and bass man Mick Quinnare confident that Supergrass pro-pels their sound forward into new territory.

"Our music has more soul now," statesGoffey. "There is a stronger groove elementwith the drums and bass coming to the fore."Coombes chips in: "Supergrass is more groovy, funky and relaxed. Something we haven'tdone on our last two albums."

All three agree on influences such as VelvetUnderground and Can, but also cite CurtisMayfield and Marvin Gaye. What is it aboutlads in their mid -twenties looking back to '60sicons?

Quinn sets the record straight. "When Igrew up in Oxford," he recalls, "the chartswere full of bands like Kajagoogoo. That did-n't make sense to me. That's how I got intostuff like Hendrix and the Beatles." Goffeyjumps in: "Everybody came to Oxford.Costello, Cocteau Twins, the lot. But at thesame time, outside the live scene, there was abit of a vacuum. The charts were crap and wewould listen to old '60s records."

Other angry young men of their generationare quick to namecheck the Beatles in this sit-uation. How do Supergrass feel about the FabFour? "You can't get around the Beatles,"admits Coombes, but Quinn offers a differentview. "The Beatles did not cover everything inmusic," he shrugs. "They didn't do the sort of

things that, say, Sly & The Family Stone did."At the end of the '80s their peers submerged

themselves in the rave scene and, later, somecorner of the dance underground. So how comeSupergrass picked up guitars instead? "We'rebetter at playing guitars than programmingdrum machines," grins Coombes.

"It's too technical," sighs Quinn. "I justcouldn't be bothered with it. I had an old[Korgi Dr. Rhythm drum machine, but inthe end I found you spend more time pro-gramming it than actually enjoying theresults."

Goffey insists: "Guitars and drums aremore immediate. It's all about rock'n'roll, isn't it?" he laughs. "Immediacy. It's somuch faster to express yourself on ourequipment." Quinn asks: "Have you evertried to get a bass line out of a keyboard?"then volunteers the answer: "It's a pain. You'd spend ages getting all the bitstogether when I could knock it out hereand now on an old-fashioned bass guitar."

The songs are better in rock music aswell, all three agree. "All the great recordsalways seem really simple," muses Goffey."It's all about lyrics and melody. The wayI see it, songs are universal. Beats areuniversal, too, to a certain extent, but youcan't beat songs."

The first single off the album, PumpingOn Your Stereo, was released on May 24.With its tongue-in-cheek references andriffs reminiscent of classic early '70sStones records it's the ideal, breezy sum-mer record. At press time, the next single,

Mooing, is due outSeptember 6. Thepiano -driven tune callsup sunny autumnafternoons like...let'sface it, nobody sincethe Kinks have man-aged to evoke.

Stones, Kinks-isSupergrass purely aretro trip? No, the twosingles only show oneaspect of the band outof a Kaleidoscope ofinfluences. Supergrass

have widened their scope quite substantially, including the odd "groove" as Coombes andGoffey pointed out. Most remarkable is theband's knack for lyrics that won't go awayafter you've switched off the stereo.

Take Beautiful People, for instance, a taleof life on the road. "It's about seeing people'sfaces rather than listening to what they aresaying," offers Coombes. "It's seeing all thatcoked -up aggression." Goffey muses: "in thesekinds of situations it's almost more interest-ing to watch." "It's about nobody in particular, though," Coombes cautions, and Goffey con-cludes with: "But then, all the best songs area bit vague."

It is only fitting, then, that Jesus CameFrom Outta Space "is not about religion," asGoffey is quick to assert. "We just had allthese really interesting phrases. It's a coupleof good one-liners, basically." Coombes laughs, adding: "We don't know where the idea forthis song comes from. But the chorus is about, well, whatever you encounter, love is tallerthan you."

"Some songs here are better captured thanothers," shrugs Quinn. "Jesus for instancecomes over really well. Having said that, there is no song on this album that I can'tstand behind."

BIG SPLASHWith no less than seven mixes, a fizzy, riffy tune and allmanner of incidental vocal and synth noises, Sunclub'sSplash (Sony/Holland) could well turnout to be bigger than their 1997 hitFiesta. The tune-which dominates theradio edit-should please crossover pro-grammers, and the trance elements willensure plenty of dancefloor action. TheIbiza mix comes complete with birdsounds and should stir a few memoriesof long, long nights.

TOP TRACKCombining a smooth R&B vocal sound with big, melodra-matic brass riffs, Sensitize by Cantaloop (Diva Records/UK)is a commercial, highly proficient rap. Programmers look-ing for something highly musical but a bit different shouldcheck this one out. Already getting airplay in Germany andproving to be a top live attraction, this group are worth yourattention.

LIL' PROBLEMDespite a title that will prove tricky to repeat on air, Demon'sLil'Fuck (Small/France) is an excellent, and happily exple-tive -free, slice of downtempo house/funk. Based around aclutch of sound bites which includes a fine but brief choruslaid over wah-wah guitar and tinkling Rhodes e -pianos, thetrack is slinky and funky rather than just sleazy.

1NTERESTIN'It is less than entirely original, but Fourth Inc.'s Trip ToJulich (Front/Netherlands) has a couple of fine drops and amemorable, if slightly plodding, tune. Trance in the '99style has provided a surprising number of crossover hits, and Trip To Julich might just be another.

VERY INTERESTIN'Can you imagine anything dafter than a rap/funk version ofCrowded House's Don't Dream It's Over? Dove's version forUK label ZTT is, thanks to a finely honed sound and somesturdy vocals from all concerned, almost certainly a hit. TheK -Klass mix is pretty good, too.

BERLIN NIGHTLIFE MAPPEDContinuing its pioneering ways, Berlin -based label MFS hasjust released a compilation called Stadtansichten (CityViews). The 19 -track compilation is both a guide to some ofthe very best of the third German techno/trance generation-the oldest musician on the album is 27 and the youngest 17-and a trip around Berlin's thriving and varied club scene.

"The diversity of the music on Stadtansichten is a reflec-tion of the various scenes that you'll find around the city,"says MFS' managing director Mark Reeder. "Techno as weknow it is changing; it's time to move on from the trancesound. We have to be prepared for how music will develop inthe years to come."

Stadtansichten certainly provides a pointer to how thingsare changing in the netherworld of techno. MFS is a labelwhich has always been as much concerned with melody andprogression as with beats, hence the fact that while this is anunderground record it has more than the average number ofcommercial moments. Liquid Crystal's Looking For Love is avocal trancer with fabulous breakdowns and a fine hook, while Denki Groove's Niji is groovy, dreamy and original. Allin all, a fine and varied compilation which undeniably pointsto the future.

The Magic programmer's StoryDelivering the keynotespeech at the musicradio conference atPopkomm last month,EMAP Radio's Mark Storygave delegates the insidetrack on the thinkingbehind the recent con-troversial format changesat London's Magic 105.4and Kiss 100, the twoLondon stations of whichStory is managing direc-tor. He also spoke of theimportant mutual self -interests which the radioand record industriesshare. Here, M&M pre-sents highlights of thespeech.

Magic 105.4, formerlyknown as MelodyRadio, has an easy lis-tening format. It wasstarted nearly 10 years

ago and was regarded back then asrather specialist.

The station was the brainchild ofLord Hanson, who made his moneyin bricks and then made a lot moremoney in the US buying unprof-itable companies and making themvery profitable. Lord Hanson hadbeen taken by the easylistening stations he hadrelaxed to in New York, and was somewhat dis-appointed that nothingsimilar existed in theUK. So in 1990 heapplied for, and won, alicence for Melody.

Melody, with its for-mat of Mantovani andVic Damone records, became the firm favouriteof the London taxi dri-ver-and anyone over 60.In fact, the service was sowell supplied with olderlisteners that at onestage when Lord Hansonwas asked what wasMelody's biggest competi-tor for listeners hereplied "probably death."

Chance of a lifetimeTwo years ago LordHanson, now an elderlyman, began selling offhis vast empire and Melodywas put up for sale. EMAPpaid £26 million [euro 43.2in] for the station and I got acall to ask if I would be inter-ested in running it. Of course,I acted cool and didn't letthem know that I was inter-ested. When they asked couldI drop in sometime in thenext few days I don't think Igave the game away when Isaid I'll be there in five min-utes-and made it in three.

The reason that I was soexcited was that I felt theopportunity was genuinely aonce -in -a -lifetime one. I hadspent the past six months in theFar East consulting and wanderingaround Singapore and Hong Kong.Everything in Singapore and HongKong is subjected to the art of FengShui, the ancient Chinese art ofplacement.

Feng Shui for "middle youth"As I walked around taking photosin the back streets of Monkok inKowloon-the most populatedplace on earth-I began to thinkabout Feng Shui'ed Radio: A radio station which would be anoasis of calm in a desert of noise. A station with presenters who don'tbelieve they are paid by the word

and keep speech to a minimum. A station which didn't scream atyou and was a welcome relief fromthe so-called personality jocks onthe CHR and AC stations. A station to take advantage ofwhat we call "middle youth," the35+ audience who still wear jeans,go to concerts, restaurants and pubsand are going to grow old disgrace-fully rather than gracefully. A station with no clutter, no jin-gles, no on -air phone calls, no

sive and helpful bunch, mostly com-posed nowadays of ex -radio people.

The Authority regulates whattypes of music you can or cannotplay, how much speech, and so on.In Melody's case this meant we hadto play music from the '40s and '50s.I went to see the Authority andasked what they really wanted toprotect about the station, and theyreplied: "Its soft melodic sound." Iasked whether, if we did that, couldwe modernise the music? The

Authority agreed, andMagic was born.

"New music is thelifeblood of stations

such as Kiss, but it onlyworks when introduced

carefully to the audi-ence, sandwiched withmore familiar music."

Mark Story, managing director

Magic 105.4 and Kiss 100annoying competitions, no news-readers-and no Mantovani, either.

Instead, quality news and finan-cial reports, plus traffic and travelupdates given by the presenter toavoid interrupting the flow.

Getting youngerBut we still had a huge problem. The music we were obliged to playwould always make the stationvery old. Melody's audience profilewas 75% over the age of 65.

All stations in the UK must com-ply with a format agreement madewith the regulator, the RadioAuthority. To their credit, theAuthority are generally a progres-

The sound becamea lot more contemporary.By the end of the year, before we started market-ing, Magic had risen fromthe sixth to the secondmost popular commercialstation in London-aposition it has nowretained for three succes-sive surveys. The audi-ence rose from 800,000 to1.3 million. But we wereaware that there was ahuge number of peoplewho hadn't tried the newservice, and who regardedMelody as the station

ties where a guest would hap-pily tell me he cheated on hiswife, stole money from theblind and liked killing ani-mals, but would only veryreluctantly admit that he lis-tened to Melody-the stationfor old people who are waitingto die. We had to do somethingto get people to tune to the105.4 FM frequency again. The answer was a series ofcommercials devised with ourad agency Mother.

Effective repositioningThe commercials have been a bigsuccess in repositioning the sta-tion. Now, over 60% of Magic'saudience is under 55. Over half ofthe output is automated, and intotal Magic employs 15 people(including sales staff and presen-ters). Its profits have nearly tre-bled in the past year.

In January this year I was askedto look after EMAP's dance stationKiss 100 as well, and together withAndy Roberts-whom I regard asone of the UK's brightest program-mers-we have set about a similarmodernising exercise.

In the past Kiss has been ratherniche and inaccessible. Our fresh

policy has been to broadcast anunashamedly popular dance formatby day, but retain and build up thespecialist dance music programmingat night. The policy is simple:"Ratings by day, reputation by night."

Taking the riskPredictably, some of the UK recordcompanies have been quick to criti-cise Kiss for not beingrisky enough. What theyneglect to consider isthat Kiss now broadcastsover 40 hours of uncom-promising specialistdance music program-ming every week, cover-ing a wider range ofdance genres than anyother station in the UKor, I believe, Europe. It ison these programmesthat new dance musicbreaks and then trans-fers to daytime Kiss.

Getting more peopleto listen during the dayhas given us a lot morepeople to direct to our specialistoutput. It was a risk, but thankful-ly eight monthslater Kiss hasincreased its audi-ence from 800,000to 1.3 million, itshighest audience 100

ever. But what about those special-ist dance shows? Well, most ofthem are now market' leaders inLondon amongst 15-24 year -olds,despite the pop alternatives avail-able. I can think of nothing thatcould be better for the recordindustry.

Respect for radio skillsNew Music is thelife blood of sta-tions such as Kiss, but only workswhen introducedcarefully to theaudience, sand-wiched with morefamiliar music. That is a skillwhich is best left toprogrammers, andone which recordcompanies shouldrecognise andrespect. On theother hand, likethe environment, unless we con-

stantly renew our resources theywill run out.

Those radio programmerswho believe they can just usemusic which researches welland play nothing else are, Ibelieve, in effect cutting downradio's rain forest. I believe

that without exposure for newartists, record companies will relymore and more on tried and testedcatalogue, will invest less and lessin new artists, and the oxygen ofnew music will be denied to radioand its listeners. That in turn willkill popular contemporary musicradio. Radio needs to understandand value the record company con-tribution, while record companiesmust try to understand whatmakes the relationship between aradio station and its listener work.

A cautionary taleLet me tell you the sad history ofLondon's Xfm.

In the UK anyone can apply fora licence to broadcast for a limitedperiod of 30 days-aso-called RestrictedService License(RSL). Xfm, a groupof indie-alternativeenthusiasts, built upa dedicated Londonfollowing of fans fortheir frequent one -month trans-missions. They were going to bevery different from the rest ofradio, which had "sold out." They, heavily encouraged by the recordcompanies, were going to be "risky, very risky" Virtually every rele-vant record label in the UK sup-ported Xfm's application for a per-

manent licence, and eventually itwas awarded one.

No fairytale endingIt was a fairytale story of the tri-umph of good over evil, brave overbland, and they all lived happilyever after. Except they didn't alllive happily at all. A year after itwent on air, Xfm-with virtuallyno listeners-was crucified by therecord industry for being so... eh...."risky" that it had little impact onrecord buyers. Xfm has now beenbought by Capital Radio, the verystation they criticised.

In my view, the lesson of Xfm isthis: to succeed you must bringan original format to the market, not repeat what someone else

had done. On theother hand, formatsmust be sufficientlypopular and main-stream to allow youto make a living. Noamount of researchis a substitute for

vision, passion and a good idea, and don't allow advertisers, recordcompanies, journalists or yourmother to influence you. Don'tdevelop your format by committee, and don't believe them whenthey say there will be a BertKaempfert and Mantovani revival. They're lying.

Digital technology plus the humcFun Radio and RTL2, CLT-UFA's music stations inFrance, are now operat-ing in a fully customiseddigital environment withstate -of -the art equip-ment. Remi Boutonexplains how the newsetup is designed to givea competitive edge tothe stations.

he man behind the desk is key-ing in some code on his key-board and clicking away withhis mouse. On the flat screen

I in front of him, differentframes appear and he asks: "Whichstation do you want to hear, whichday and what time?" Once the choicehas been selected, music suddenlyemerges from the speakers linked tothe hi-fi set.

The scene is the office of AxelDuroux, president of CLT-UFA sta-tions Fun Radio (Dance/R&B) andRTL2 (AC). He's demonstrating hisnew digital goodies. Duroux, who haspreviously worked for IBM, says thatone of the primary uses of this newsoftware is as a programming tool.

Broad programming accessUsers are able at any time to accessthe programming schedules of thetwo CLT-UFA networks on the screen, and to make changes in the sequenceof songs. They also have full instantaccess to a database of music titles, jingles and ads.

But in addition to this internalinformation, there is access to thecomplete programming of eight dif-ferent stations (ranging from NRJ to

Skyrock), which is recorded andstored in a database for a full 30 days. This allows theFun and RTL2teams to moni-tor anythingwhich has beenbroadcast bytheir direct com-petitors, frommusic to adver-tising, on -airpromos to DJs'comments.

The sound isnot great (toocompressed),but it is listenable. Tracks can be fast -forwarded, so that in just a few min-utes a full day's programming can bemonitored and programmers canreact instantly if needs be. "We can bemuch more reactive, much quicker,"says scheduling manager Sam Zniber."This allows us to build up a betterpicture of the radio market."

Zniber, though, emphasises thatthe technology is not an end in itself, but an adjunct to programming andmanagerial expertise. "It's very user-friendly," he says, "but it is only atool."

This new software is just one ele-ment of the built-in state-of-the-art

in element adds up to Fun Radiorecording studios, and using the besttechnology available to move fullyinto the digital age.

Duroux reveals that the stations'total investment in the new technolo-gies came to some Ffr 15 million (euro2.3 million), which includes furnitureand hardware as well as the software.Fun's operations are now fully digitalwhile RTL2's are in the last stage ofdigitalisation. Duroux says he wanteda setup which remained user-friendlywhile givingthe station amodern twist.

The humandimensionThis is reflect-ed, for exam-ple, in the factthat the pro-grammingsoftware iseasy to oper-ate, and in theuse of special-ly designed wooden furniture inthe recording studios. The phi-losophy of Fun, says Duroux, has been to benefit from theadvantages of digital technolo-gy whilst retaining the humanfactor. "We wanted to useadvanced technologies, but keepa human feeling in the studio,"says Duroux.

The ergonomics of Fun's twinbroadcasting studios and thethree production studios havebeen carefully crafted. In thebroadcasting suites, DJs haveaccess to a mixing board whichis fronted by five different flatscreens: one giving access to themusic library (all the titles inthe digital database, the promosand the jingles), with thesequence of the songs listed andtime coded; another to handle theadvertising spots (local and national);a third which is a digital replica of atraditional 16 tracks cartridge deck;number four highlighting the pro-

gramming for the full day; and thefifth giving access to the Internet. However, there are still CD playersand even vinyl turntables available.

Creative benefitsAll the music titles and the jingles arestored on hard -drive. Titles are trans-ferred by the DJs from the library tothe virtual cartridge player and acti-vated when needed. "With the newgeneration of digital equipment you

don't have tospend toomuch timelearning howto operate themachines. They are veryeasy to use,"says produc-tion managerJean -MichelMeschin.

these fully digital studios is that nowyou don't have physical contact withthe music you play any more," saysDJ Evan, referring to the absence inthe studio of any physical sound carri-

er. "However, it gives you more timeduring the show to prepare your talk. You're more concentrated on the prod-uct because you're not distracted bycomplicated handling."

Evan adds: "I spend less time onthe technical side of preparation, butI wouldn't want the radio to becomemore automated."

The technology, similar to thatused in other radio stations acrossEurope, also allows presenters torecord all their talk segments inadvance which can then be editedwith music. But, says Meschin, "wenever do that at Fun-there is alwaysa live DJ behind the mixing desk."

Pace and personality"The advantage of the system is

that we have amore precise prod-uct on -air," Znibersays. "The cuesbetween the songsare smoother andwe can also controlthe overall musicalrhythm of the pro-gramme better."

"This is crucialwith our type ofmusic format,"adds Zniber. "Thepace of the tracksis in synchrony

Designed for flexibility and efficiencyFun Radio and RTL2 are equippedwith the Protools production soft-ware. Production manager JeanMichel Meschin explains: `We choseProtools because the system's perfor-mance represents excellent value formoney, and because it has potentialfor additional facilities. You makeyour mix as if it you were using an oldmixing desk, but everything is storedin the computer. If is a very flexiblesystem: if you want to change onething in the programme, you don'thave to restart from scratch. You justdo a few tweaks."

On the production side, Meschinsays the 3 productions studios-a bigone and two smaller-are all connect-ed to the database and fully compati-ble. The production of a soundbite can

be started in one of the small studiosand finished in the big one withoutneeding to transfer anything. "Whenthe soundbite is ready, you can put itdirectly in the sound database. Theoperation takes only a few secondsand needs no tape," says Meschin.

This represents huge productivitygains. "When we simply need tochange one word or one music samplein a message, we select what we wantto change on the track, and once themix is done, it is automaticallyreloaded in the computer," saysMeschin.

The main production studio hasenough equipment to accommodatethe recording of an album. "We wouldprobably have problems storing allthe instruments," jokes Meschin.

However, what is more likely to hap-pen is getting artists in one of the stu-dios to record soundbites.

Several national and internationalacts including Brenda, Lauryn Hilland Will Smith have recorded jinglesfor Fun Radio in the studios. "In orderto keep the warmth of the analoguesound, even if the studio is fully digi-tal, we use a big tube pre -amplifier,"says Meschin.

Thanks to these new facilities,Fun's 5 -member production team cantake on more sophisticated productsand make changes more often. "Itoffers the possibility to create soundswe couldn't make before in order tohave maximum smoothness on theair, dynamic without being aggres-sive," Meschin concludes.

with the liners, and the DJs can focusmore on their spoken links For thelisteners, this probably creates-con-sciously or unconsciously-a morepleasing overall sound," he concludes.

Digital technology is present inevery aspect of the station, and itspresence does change the way peoplework, but Zniber is adamant thattechnology shouldn't overshadow thehuman factor in radio, or interfacewith the skills and intuition of pro-grammers or presenters.

"The most important thing," hestates, "is to make a good product, with soul and a human touch, with aunited team. More and more, asInternet downloading becomes domi-nant, these human aspects will beincreasingly important."

The Fun Radio stationsare a combination ofadvanced technologyand the "human" feelof specially designedwooden furniture.

FOUL PLAY PRODUCTIONSFIELD OF ACTIONPartisanInternational release date:September 27Foul Play go back to the hard core days of 1992, andstill churn out killer drum'n'bass tunes in these times

when truly exciting singles inthe genre are few and farbetween. Field Of Action is theirsecond album, following their1995 debut Suspected on MovingShadow, and features the mon-ster 12 -inch singles Risk-whichsold out weeks after its Novem-ber 1998 release and has, myste-riously, never been re-issued-and Redrum which tore up all

the right clubs this summer. As a bonus you get afresh, exclusive Omni Trio remix of Foul Play's mili-tant 1998 jazz -stepper Synthetic Bitch. CementingFoul Play's reputation as purveyors of top notch vocalD'n'B, Risk, and the new track Destiny, showcase thesultry R&B tones of vocalist Shereen. On this album,Risk also receives a very welcome hip hop re -workingby Blueboy. Listen to that horn riff and those beats, and witness a way out of purist D&B into urbancrossover territory. Golden Gate, Redrum, Swell,Risk-Foul Play got the funk and know how to use it.

MOUSE ON MARSNIUN NIGGUNGDominoInternational release date:October 4German electronica duoMouse On Mars return to thescene with their fourth albumto date. Jan Werner and AndiToma had their biggest hitfour years ago with Bib offtheir 1995 album Iaora Tahi-ti. For a good twelve monthsthe two reigned over thenascent international electronica scene from Tokyo toSan Francisco. After a period of considerable TV,radio and concert exposure, Mouse On Mars wentunderground again. The Distroia EP released earlierthis year was a first sign that the duo was back andready to kick some backsides. Where Iaora Tahiti fitsnugly into the then prevailing Zeitgeist of looped, hypnotic tracks, Niun Niggung boldly drops themonotony of loops to introduce a more organic sound. Not so much tracks as sound profiles, the twelve"items" on this CD were left wide open at the mix -down stage and invite the listener to assemble themin his/her own head. Niun Niggung sees Mouse OnMars playing in the territory of musique concrete, and of minimalists such as Philip Glass, WimMertens et al. For an introduction, try some of theirminiatures where a beat provides a basic grid, suchas Gogonal, Diskdusk or Pinwheel Herman.

"I go straight to Music &Media's sales andairplay chart section. It'seasy to go through andyou can very quicklyfind the information youneed. PRINCIPALES

"I read M&M for twoprincipal reasons. The first isthat it's important to know

what goes on in the media, radio and music television

landscape across Europe. Ifeel it's important to be

properly informedabout these things. The

second reason is thecharts. We take a

careful look at those and analyse theinformation to see how international

AIRPLAY

On the airAl&ilfs weekly aiiplay analysis column

With the high success rate of Welsh and Swedishartists this year, com-bine the hottest con-temporary Swedishband with the most fa-mous Welshman inmodern music, and youhave a magic formula.Tom Jones and TheCardigans enter theEuropean Radio Top 50at number 35 as thehighest new entry

this week with their cover of Burning Down TheHouse (Gut), which is taken from Jones' forthcom-ing album.

Further up the charts, Texas, oblivious toseaonal changes, top the chart for the thirdweek running with Summer Son (Mercury). This week's highest climber is Ronan Keatingwith When You Say Nothing At All (Polydor). The Boyzone frontman's debut solo track is cur-rently enjoying considerable airplay on Euro-pean radio stations.

Ex -spice Geri Halliwell is inching up the air-play chart, reaching her highest position so farat number 7 with the latin-inspired Mi ChicoLatino (EMI).

But it's Tom Jones and The Cardigans whohave really been lighting the fire of Europeanprogrammers this week with Burning Down TheHouse. Manchester CHR station Key 103's pro-gramme director Dave Shearer says: "It's thekind of song you instantly take to. It wentstraight in our A -list, where it gets 69 plays perweek. We were the first UK radio station to giveit "A" rotation. Some people might say that TomJones isn't an FM artist, but our philosophy issimple-a good song is a good song. I think it'sone of the best songs I've heard so far this yearand I'm really looking forward to the release ofthe album." Key 103 is in the process of boostingits profile considerably: "We're in the final stagesof finishing our new DJ line-up which will be an-nounced shortly. We'll also have a competition onour breakfast show with a six figure cash prize. We're also planning to run a TV ad campaign, soit's fair to say we'll get a bit of exposure in theweeks to come!"

Sheryl Crow has thesecond highest newentry with her cover ofGuns 'N' Roses' 1987smash hit Sweet Child0' Mine (A&M) at num-ber 46. Also new atnumber 47 is OceanColour Scene's Profit InPeace (Island). Thetrack is the first singlefrom the group's newalbum which is due to be released shortly.

There are a number of interesting tracks wait-ing to break into next week's airplay chart. LyteFunky Ones aren't ready to say goodbye to thesummer just yet with their new track SummerGirls (Logic/Arista). Also on a summery tip isDanish remix artist Funkstar De Luxe's versionof Bob Marley's Sun Is Shining (edel) (see artiststory on page 1). Pop veterans The Eurythmicshave reformed and will release a new album thisautumn. The first single to be released is I SavedThe World Today (RCA) which looks set to top air-play charts in the coming weeks.

SACD breathes new life into analoguepreventing piracy in a manner thatrepresents the most powerful copy-right protection system yetdevised," he says.

Initially, Sony Corp. will launchtwo SACD players in Europe, priced at euro 5,000 and euro3,000. The first players will targetthe audiophile market "looking fora higher sound quality," says Jean -Michel Perbet, president/CEO ofSony Corp. Europe, who admitsthat "it will take time [for SACD]to take off."

Sony Music will release the firstseries of 15 pre-recorded SACDtitles, including Kind Of Blue andSketches Of Spain by Miles Davis,Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, and Mahler's Symphony No. 1 con-ducted by Leonard Bernstein. Theonly pop title slated for SACDrelease is Maria Carey's #1's. Newtitles will be added at the rate of 10

per month, according to Russell."SACD will give an impetus to

the whole music industry," hesays. However, Sony is currentlythe only major committed to theformat.

A spokesman for Warner MusicInternational said that no SACDreleases are planned, while atUniversal, a few classical titleswill be available in the format, but"there are no plans for anythingelse at the moment," says aspokeswoman.

According to Sony Music Europe,a handful of indies are expected torelease SACD titles, especially inthe classical genre. These includethe UK's Hyperion Records andLinn Records, French classicallabel Lyrinx, and German classicallabel Stille Music.

The retail price of SACD soft-ware has yet to be disclosed,

continued from page 1

although a source at Sony Musicsays, it should be in the samebracket as DVD. Alan Phillips,Sony Music Europe VP marketingfor new technologies, says that, ini-tially, SACD software will be avail-able to consumers in hardwarestores, next to the players. At a lat-er stage, it is expected that tradi-tional retailers will also embracethe format and start offering it toconsumers.

Phillips admits that the setprice for the hardware will limitthe penetration of the format, butprices are likely to go down. "SACDwill set the reference standard forthe best in audio, and it'll trickledown as it always does," he said.

How much it will "trickle down"remains to be seen, as, by Idei'sown admission, the SACD "will notbe big business for Sony, but willkeep a lot of people happy."

Zomba ups global presenceWatson says: "I've had five greatyears on my own, but this wasan offer I justcouldn't refuse. It's not every dayyou have thechance of a joblike this. Zombais by far thelargest indepen-dent music com-pany and theirJive label is cur-rently the hottest in the world.

Our two companies have alreadyestablished an excellent workingrelationship and I am viewing thisposition as the next logical step forus both in an exciting internationalexpansion programme. It's probably

the only job in the world I wouldhave considered."

Watson's appointment follows therecent announcement that ZombaFrance will begin operating on Octo-ber 1, and the new company's manag-ing director, Christophe Lameignere,is already selecting a team.

Zomba's international expansionhas accelerated hugely, so far thisyear. Historically, the company hashad a strong UK and Europeanbase, which was strengthened bythe 1996 acquisition of a 75% stakein UK distributor and label groupPinnacle, 80% of the Rough Tradelabel and distribution operations inthe GSA region and 100% of RoughTrade Benelux from Pinnacle own-er, Steve Mason. In the same year it

continued from page 1

struck a licence deal with Virgin forall territories where it did not havea company. This year it renamedthe GSA and Benelux distributorsZomba Distribution.

In addition to the Canadian,Australian, Singapore and Frenchcompanies opened in 1999, Zombahas offices in Stockholm; Brussels,Cologne and Herne in Germany,Vienna, Zurich, and London, aswell as its European HQ in Laaren,Netherlands. Meyer says that Zom-ba will also open marketing andpromotion offices in Norway andDenmark on October 1, which,long-term, may also have an A&Rfunction.

Marley's Sun shines againcontinued from page 1

Funkstar De Luxe's remix havebeen echoing all over Ibiza, andedel releases the single throughoutEurope on September 13.

Michel Petre, edel's senior Euro-pean A&R executive, has highhopes for the track he picked upfrom Danish techno/trance indieHypnotic. He admits that "sometracks are over -hyped during theIbiza season but Sun Is Shiningstands out as an unusual, well -pro-duced number with pop potential."

Christian Lefebvre, music pro-grammer for French national net-work Fun Radio (dance/groove)agrees: "It's a smash hit." Lefebvresays the remix is perfect for a sta-tion like Fun, which targets 15-25year olds. "Marley's songs are a bittoo old for Fun's format, so makingthem more consistent with today'ssound is fine by us."

Sun Is Shining flags up a BobMarley "season". On September 5,independent Koch released atriple -CD set with 64 Marleyrecordings made between 1968 and1972. The Complete Bob MarleyAnd The Wailers Part II is the sec-ond volume in Koch's edition ofcarefully re -mastered works-anoverview of Marley's output duringthat era.

On October 26, Universal Musicplans to release Bob Marley: ARebel's Dream (Def Jam/Island).Produced by Marley's son Stephen, the album features Lauryn Hill,Erykah Badu and Aerosmith'sSteven Tyler singing virtual"duets" with Marley.

Finally, on December 4, a trib-ute concert takes place on Ora-cabessa Beach, Jamaica. The con-cert is scheduled to be released onDVD and VHS through ChrisBlackwell's Palm Pictures.

Sun Is Shining was originallyrecorded with Lee Perry in 1971 bythe Wailers-Marley, Peter Toshand Bunny Livingston, later BunnyWailer-but was released on theband's own Tuff Gong label.

"There are no written contractsit seems," observes Petre, "andclearing the rights was complicated.Several companies claimed rightsto the song, so we made deals withthree or four likely owners."

According to New Jersey -basedSan Juan Music Group, whichlicensed the master to Hypnotic,Perry signed an affidavit in 1993stating that he wrote Sun Is Shin-ing and owns the master. However,London -based authors rights soci-ety MCPS/PRS cites Marley as thesole author, although it is mostlikely to have been co -written byMarley and Perry.

It was the magic touch of studiowizard Perry that helped edel tofight off copy cats. White labels ofan alternative, apparently UK pro-duced Sun Is Shining house mix,had been circulating clubs inAugust. According to Petre theyfailed "because they used an inferi-or 1978 recording of the song whichjust doesn't sound the part."

This week sees good and bad news for Danishbroadcaster The Voice. The radio station, andits sister project Voice Pop, came first and thirdrespectively in Danish cable operator TeleDanmarks poll to determine which broadcastersshould remain on its service. Sky Radio was theDanes' second choice, while Radio 2 and sisterstation Radio Uptown came in at three andfour respectively. Switching to TV, The Voice'sproposed Voice TV channel came in at number26 and is unlikely to go live, while MTV, at num-ber 15, will stay on air.

Giovanna Melandri wants her MTV. TheItalian minister of culture has backed a cam-paign to keep MTV Italy on national terrestrialTV. She joins an impressive list of supporters, including Madonna, Sting and Italian artistRenzo Arbore. Last July, MTV Italy's broadcastpartner in Italy Rete A came ninth in a list ofeight licence renewals for national private TVnetworks, a decision MTV is contesting. Theappeal verdict is expected shortly.

Hotline hears that the CSA has been rappingthe knuckles of eight radio stations for not com-plying with quota regulations. The French broad-casting authority cautioned three gold (MFM,RFM, Nostalgie) and two AC networks (Cherie,RTL2) for not respecting the 20% quota for newtalent and new production. Meanwhile threeCHR and dance stations (Ado FM, Paris; KissFM, Nice, and Voltage, Paris) have not obeyedthe 40% domestic content quota.

Former Nostalgie programme directorNicolas Lespaule will join Europe 1 Com-munication as deputy joint programme directorfor AC network Europe 2 and Gold RFM.

Michael Haentjes,CEO of German indie labeledel, has forecast that, by2001, he expects his com-pany's turnover to reachDM 1 billion (euro 512 mil-lion) and a net income ofDM 126m.

Warner ChappellFrance employees havebeen working from home after a fire partiallyburned down the offices of the publishing housein Paris on August 30. The cause remainsunknown.

Commercial Norwegian radio consortium P4,which oversees stations in Norway, South Africa, and Finland, has announced a 13.6% increase inits pre-tax profits for the first six months of theyear, rising to Nkr 42.6 million (euro 5.15 mil-lion) from Nkr 37.5m. Turnover increased fromNkr 126.2m to Nkr 138.8m... Staying with P4,the company's deputy president Hein EspenHattestad has replaced Kalle Lisberg as presi-dent. Lisberg returns to his position as head ofModern Times Group (MTG) in Norway, whichowns a majority share in P4.

Swedish -based on-line music retailer Boxmanhas launched operations in the Netherlands thisweek. The site, www.boxman.nl, replicates localportals in France, Germany, UK, Sweden,Norway, Denmark, and Finland, and is managedby Jurgen Post.

Hotline hears that French airplay monitoringcompany Ipsos Music is about to make agroundbreaking deal with authors societySACEM to provide monitored information oncertain local stations. It is the first time SACEMhas used such a system to monitor radio andredistribute royalties.

And finally, get well soon to ManfredZumkeller. The former Warner MusicEurope president is recovering from majorsurgery in the US.
