Music Event Management
In this unit you will:
• Work as team to create and promote a series of live music events; both real and hypothetical
• Learn about all aspects of music event management
• Develop teamwork skills
• Record evidence of your progress
1st Term Overview:
Weeks 1-6 : Tasks developing key knowledge of music event management
• Creating concept/ USP/theme • Promotion • Venues- PRS licenses, PLI, Health & Safety
• Costs- Venue hire, personnel, promotion, equipment, breaking even & creating a profit
Weeks 7-15 Set Task 1- Your team must design promotional materials and strategy for gig during performance week.
Set Task 2- Your team must plan a hypothetical live music event. Plan to include:• Promotion strategy• Cost break down including: promotion costs, ticket prices,
venue hire, staff, any equipment hired etc. • Health and safety plan
Knowledge:
• Creating live event concepts and unique selling points (USP)
• Promotion strategies• Legal aspects• Venue details• Costs
Through attending these sessions and through your own researchyou will develop your knowledge in the following areas:

Lesson 1
Today we will be developing our teamwork and planning skills.

Task
In groups of 4 you are to:
• Construct the tallest possible tower with supplies provided
• Create & present your design and team strategy to the rest of the group
Prizes will be awarded for the tallest tower and the group displaying the best team work skills
You will be assessed on the following:
• Your ability to work and plan effectively as a team
• The effectiveness of your design- i.e. how tall it is!
You will be graded using the module assessment levels: pass, merit and distinction

Visual promotion
Today we are:
• Exploring visual promotion for live events
• Creating our own visual promotion for an event
• Devise promotion strategy
• Calculate potential costs

Visual promotion:
Should contain the following:
• Branding/ logo• Information on who’s playing• Ticket prices/entry fee• Date• Venue• Restrictions
Distribution strategies
• Posters- placement: venue and surrounding area
• Flyers- street team, handouts at gigs prior to the event
• Stickers- free, cheeky alternative flyposting
• E- flyers- sent to mailing list
• Magazine pages- which magazines?
All should be low cost!
Task:
In teams half of you are to:
Design and create visual promotional materials for the following event:
3 indie-folk bands (you make up names!)

NB: Venue capacity is 400 (approx.)
Meanwhile:
The remaining team members are to devise strategy to distribute promotional materials
• Think about where your materials will be displayed and how you will distribute them
• Choose your materials and the quantity using brochure provided
• Add up the cost of your strategy using price information provided
• Think about profit (ticket revenue will bring in £3600)

MECHANICAL RIGHT PERFORMING RIGHT
If you hold the copyright to your musicYou are entitled to a ‘mechanical right’ if your music is:
• Copied to compact disc• Placed on internet music
sites ITunes etc.)• Used on radio or TV ads/
shows• Movies
You are entitled to a ‘performance right’ f when your music is publicly performed e.g.
• At a music venue/ club• In a shop• In a waiting room• Whilst on hold
If you can ‘hear’ your music you may receive a performance royalty

Your questions should be based on your research on PRS MCPS etc.

Health and Safety
MEM Lesson 5
Music Venues and PLIMusic Venues are required to carry Public Liability Insurance (PLI) to cover costs of any injury to members of the public whilst at the venue. Cover is usually between 1 and 5 million pounds
• Bespoke document covering what a venue does and what’s in and around it- i.e. equipment, stage exits car parks etc.)
• By having PLI music venues do not need a health and safety plan!
• A health and safety plan only becomes necessary if the venue changes in any way or brings in special equipment e.g. pyrotechnics
Events Promoters
If you are promoting and staging an event at a music venue that has PLI then no health and safety plan is required
If you are promoting an event such as a festival in an open space then you will need to create a health and safety plan
