Dear Spring Hills Residents and Families;
Grandparents Day will be celebrated on Sunday September 10th, 2017. Everyday is a great time to celebrate with gratitude the existence of our grandparents. The day is used as a way to put emphasis on their importance as a guiding force in our lives. Here below is how the day became a national celebration.
In 1970, a West Virginia housewife, Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, initiated a campaign to set aside a special day just for Grandparents. A native of Fayette County, Marian McQuade and her husband Joe are the parents of 15 children. They have 40 grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. Senator Jennings Randolph (D-WV) was especially instrumental in the project. The first Grandparents Day was proclaimed in 1973 in West Virginia by Governor Arch Moore. Also in 1973, Senator Randolph introduced a Grandparents Day resolution in the United States Senate. The resolution languished in committee.
Mrs. McQuade and her team turned to the media to garner support. They also began contacting governors, senators, congress men in every state. And they sent letters to churches, businesses, and numerous national organizations interested in senior citizens. In 1978, five years after its West Virginia inception, the United States Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. The proclamation was signed by President Jimmy Carter. September was chosen for the holiday, to signify the “autumn years” of life.
Today this event, begun by only a few, is observed by millions throughout the United States.

Music has the extraordinary power to connect us to ourselves, our past and each other. Although individual musical tastes vary, the profound impact of music in our lives is undeniable. �is is especially true for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. As part of our holistic approach to wellness, we o�er a variety of music therapy programs encouraging socialization and emotional connection.
�rough the discovery of our Residents’ musical preferences, personalized playlists are created for an individualized listening experience. We also partner with Music �erapists who lead programs such as bell choirs, drum circles, intergenerational sing-alongs and live performances. We welcome families to join us for interactive musical fun with their loved ones, and experience the transformational e�ect music has on the mind, body and spirit.
