“The human soul has regions which can be illuminated only by music”.Zoltan Kodály
Tasmin Little Music Centre (TLMC) brings Bradford together through music. The centre links community music making and participation with opportunities to experience diverse and high quality performance events. Based at the University of Bradford, TLMC operates as a musical hub offering opportunities to listen, create and perform. In addition, we are also privileged to programme work in a range of exciting venues across the city.
This season we present a showcase of Pakistani, Polish and Eastern European music from communities who have made the city their home for over 60 years. The first stage of this journey of musical exploration takes in Qawwali Singing, new currents in Asian Pop, the delicate and moving piano compositions of Fryderyk Chopin and a rare opportunity to discover the polyphonic (multi-layered) melodies of Georgian Monastic songs and folk music.
Come and dip into the musical heritage of the region; hear something unique and unusual, be inspired and ever changed.
Mark Haydn RobinsonArtistic Director & Fellow in Music

Qawwali - embellished melodies (rags) sung & played on harmonium and accompanied by delicate, often sophisticated tabla rhythms - is the devotional music of the Sufis. Sufism is the inner mystical dimension of Islam. A practitioner of this tradition
is generally known as a sūfī, though some adherents of the tradition reserve this term for only those practitioners who have attained the goals of the Sufi tradition. Another name used for the Sufi seeker is Dervish.
The late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was considered one of the greatest Qawwali singers in the world. Born in Faisalabad, Pakistan in 1948 he was renowned for his amazing performance at Sufi Shrines all over Pakistan and India. After Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s death in 1997, his friend and manager Haji Iqbal Naqibi settled in Bradford and later began mentoring Hamid Ali Naqibi a young Bradford born Qawwali singer. Hamid’s expressive passion and power in his young voice has been compared with the great singing master Nusrat.
Showcasing the talent within the University community, this event brings Hamid Ali Naqibi together with a young talented Bradford based Pakistani pop/rock band OWAIS, renowned Pakistani Folk musicians Bashir Lohar (singer) and Muhammad Younis (dhol master).
