Who is “St. Cecilia”? And What can she teach us about beauty in the Mass? In 3rd century-Rome, St. Cecilia, virgin and martyr, converted over 400 souls who were then baptized by Pope Urban, including her to-be husband and his brother. She saw her angel, as did her husband after his baptism. The legend of her life includes her hearing heavenly music, which is why she is the patron saint of musicians. She gave her life in martyrdom for the Christian Faith. Reflecting on a few aspects of her story, let us think about three things re-garding our music. St. Cecilia saw the angels. The angels are indeed at Holy Mass, and though we may not see them with our bodily eyes, we should strive to look at the Holy Liturgy from their per-spective. With awe and wonder, we could see the Mass anew, knowing we are indeed in the presence of heavenly beings, but also with Jesus, who is God himself! In the Eucharistic Prayer, the priest prays, “command that these gifts be borne by the hands of your holy Angel to your altar on high.” We also sing with the angels at Holy Mass. The song of the angels is “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts”, as referenced in Scripture in Revelation 4:8 and “Gloria in Excelsis Deo!”, sung at Christmas to the shepherds. St. Cecilia heard heavenly music. What does heavenly music sound like? What are the choirs of angels singing around the Throne of God? The sounds of heaven have been associated in musical composition with consonance, harmony, and choral sound. Thinking of these things, we can better understand the three marks of what makes music “sacred” according to Pope St. Pius X, which was reaffirmed at the Second Vatican Council: holiness, goodness of form, and universality. Indeed the Holy Mass is the foretaste of the heavenly banquet; a re-presentation of the sacrifice offered by Christ on Calvary, yes, but also a beatific vision of what the culmination of Christian life will be: eternal life. St. Cecilia converted many souls to God. Through her beauty, purity, and love of God, she brought many, many souls to Christ. Even in the events surrounding her death, she prayed and preached the Good News to those who would listen. The Mass has been termed “the most beautiful thing this side of heaven”. Certainly, when music combines with the visual splendor of beautiful art, vest-ments, and liturgical action, the smell of incense and candles, and the touch and taste of the Blessed Sacrament, the hu-man senses are given a spectacular feast at the Solemn Liturgy of the Church. When a soul who knows not beauty, en-counters this mystery, she is converted and formed. The soul is awakened by the Beauty of God, and so we have the twofold purpose of sacred music: to glorify God, and the sanctification (or conversion) of the faithful.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
