SolarFest: TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE AUGUST 21, 2017
On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will cross the continental United
States from Salem, Oregon, to Charleston, South Carolina. The last time a
total eclipse crossed the United States from sea to sea was June 8, 1918.
The 2017 eclipse in either total or partial phase can be seen by over 500
million people in North and South America, Europe, and Africa. In the U.S.,
millions will gather along a tiny ribbon less than 100 miles wide to see total-
ity, the complete blocking out of the sun by the Moon which will reveal the
solar corona. The rest of the entire country will be able to see a partial
eclipse.
This phenomenon is a truly historic event and a wonderful opportunity to
view one of nature's most stunning displays.
The eclipse will start just after 1 PM in Belton, South Carolina’s premiere
position to see the longest duration of the event, as Belton is directly in the
path predicted for the sun’s traverse across the sky. The total eclipse will
start at 2:38 PM and last for 2 minutes and 37 seconds.
The Belton Area Museum Association will be open for special hours 10
AM—4 PM that day for people to view the Air, Wind, and Space exhibit.
Visitors will also be able to make a device that will allow them to view the
solar eclipse safely. In partnership with the Belton Center for the Arts pro-
gram entitled Solarfest, the museum will also be selling Moon Pies.
For more information about the solar eclipse, visit eclipse2017.nasa.gov
Be sure to join us for this once-in-a-lifetime awe-inspiring event on August
21.
Belton in Space History
Ever heard of Ham, the Astro-
Chimp? As part of the Mercury
Program, in January 1961, Ham
was the first primate to orbit the
planet and arrive safely back to
earth. How did he do it? With a
parachute made right here in Bel-
ton, SC. The Peerless Mill, part of
the Milliken Textile factories,
made parachute material for use
by NASA to slow the velocity
of capsules descending from
space.
Our latest exhibit opened on Sunday, April 30. Sponsored by Draisen-Edwards Music House, Jazz: More
Than Just The Music offers a glimpse of the 1920’s Jazz Age. Also known as the Roaring Twenties, the era
was defined by the new jazz music, new technologies, and Prohibition.
Attendees at the opening were treated to an amazing concert, put on by four members of the Anderson Uni-
versity Guitar Ensemble. The group is composed of guitar majors, who must audition for a place in the en-
semble. They perform both classical and jazz arrangements.
The exhibit includes a ‘flapper’ dress, the newest fashion of the 1920’s. Advertisements for the latest in
food items are on display. See which ones you have in your pantry today. Technological advances such as the
phonograph and radio are part of the display. The exhibit also includes a great collection of photographs and
other memorabilia of Loretta Holloway, South Carolina’s First Lady of Song, and Belton native.
Interactive portions of the exhibit feature learning how to dance the
Charleston, the popular 1920’s dance, creating your own popsicle harmon-
ica, and trying your hand at playing a guitar and flute. Visitors can also lis-
ten to jazz music from the 1920’s to today, as well as view a few clips of the
first feature-length motion picture with sound, The Jazz Singer.
Be sure to come experience this interactive portrayal of the Jazz Age be-
fore the exhibit leaves on July 1.

Rhythm on the Rails
The Rhythm on the Rails concert series was a huge success. The museum had a great turn out for each of the four
concerts—Oshea Robinson, the BHP Jazz Band, the Combo Kings, and Loretta Holloway. The weather cooperated for
the most part. The Combo Kings played in the Center Section Performance Hall, which allowed room for dancing. The
other concerts were outside where the concert goers were able to enjoy beautiful weather with the music.
Southern Smoke BBQ, of Honea Path, served dinner plates from its food truck during Oshea Robinson’s concert. The
Christian Exchange provided sandwiches, chips, and drinks during the Combo Kings and Loretta Holloway’s perform-
ances. BAMA provided snacks during the BHP Jazz Band concert.
Thank you to our sponsors: Webbcraft Family Foundation, IMS Belton, SAPA, Hard Candy Biker Wear, City of Belton,
and Anderson County. Thanks go out to Debbie Hughes and Norma Hughes-Smith, as well for their hard work in orga-
nizing this wonderful concert series!
Upcoming Exhibit - Call for Artifacts
The next exhibit at the museum will be Air, Wind, and Space. The museum is look-
ing for artifacts dealing with forms of air travel, such as parachutes, parasailing equip-
ment, airplane and helicopter accoutrement. We also would like artifacts dealing with
weather and climate like items from historic tornadoes and hurri-
canes, vintage weather vanes or unique rain gauges. Artifacts that
show how man tries to use the power of wind, such as windmills and turbines, would also
be a great addition. Memorabilia from space explorations such as patches, newspaper
articles, moon rocks, and NASA souvenirs are also wanted.
Artifacts should be brought to the museum July 5-July 19, during museum hours:
Wednesday-Friday 9-2, Saturday 9-1. Artifacts will be on display through September 9.
Please join us for the exhibit opening on July 23, from 3-5 PM.
A large crowd gathers
to listen to Oshea Rob-
inson, who performed
on April 28, as part of
the Rhythm on the Rails
Concert series.
Loretta Holloway clowns around on the railroad tracks before her
concert on May 27. Her jazz and contemporary song routine was
performed to much acclaim.
