The essence of medieval artThe Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya houses the best collection of Romanesque mural painting in the world. Together with the splendour of Gothic art, it provides a fascinating tour of medieval art.
1123 consecration of the church of Sant Climent de Taüll, in the Pyrenees
1920 to stop them from being exported and to preserve the painting, the murals were removed from the interior of the church and taken to the museum. The paintings from the apse are the Museu Nacional’s masterpiece
The modernity of ModernismeBarcelona is the capital of Modernisme thanks to Gaudí and his architecture. The Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya keeps his interior designs as well as the pictorial work by Casas and Rusiñol, two artists who travelled to Paris and brought back with them the novelties of the times, such as using posters for advertisement. Modernisme became Catalonia’s distinctive artistic movement.
1890 Casas and Rusiñol amaze the audience from Barcelona with an exhibition that will mark the start of Modernisme in Catalonia
1897 the cafe-restaurant Els Quatre Gats opened. It was often to be visited by Casas, Rusiñol, Utrillo and Picasso and was the very centre of the Modernista movement in Barcelona
