Visual quality and conservational aspectsSubtly setting the lighting stage
Soft, lighting accents emphasise the three-dimensionality of differ-ent-sized sculptures. Lighting that breaks up harsh shadows enhances specific objects. A deliberate decision was made to dis-pense with drastic contrasts and excessively dramatic presentation. Thanks to outstanding glare reduction, visitors' enjoyment of art is aided by high levels of visual comfort. A historic model of the Milan Cathedral which was made in 1519 is accentuated by light and shadow that are modelled on natural sunlight. The precious tapes-tries involved extremely exacting conservation requirements.

Web app for comparing two lighting solutions The app compares various light sources with respect to the po-tential risk they pose to sensitive materials. Professional background knowledge makes lighting design based on scientific methods straightforward and easily under-standable.
The Museum of the Cathedral in the Palazzo Reale is making the extensive collection of the Veneranda Fabbrica (Venerable Factory) of Milan Cathedral accessible to the public for the first time. This historic organisation has been taking care of all operational aspects of the cathedral since 1387. The exhibits which document the approximately 500-year old history of the construction of the Milan Cathedral were previously kept in various archives. The exhibition covers an area of 2,200 m² and will be part of Expo 2015, which will take place in Milan. The general theme of this Universal Exposition is – Feeding the Planet. Energy for life. Accordingly, the museum operators attached particular importance to a sustainable, resource-saving lighting solution.

One spotlight caters for a huge variety of exhibits: the ARCOS museum spotlight offers appropriate beam angles for every object thanks to its great precision, adjustable lighting positions and a large choice of optics. The illuminance level can be adjusted directly on the luminaire.
Exhibits were previously swamped with light (see photo above), but the curators nowadays insist on soft, accentuated light. This shows off the 3-dimensionality of the different-sized sculptures to optimum effect.

The existing building, the Palazzo Reale, was completely gutted and extended by adding new premises for the Museo del Duomo. The exhibition layout was radically redesigned. The present premium, all-LED lighting solution is twice as energy efficient as conventional museum lighting technologies.
