NAPLAN We remind all parents that the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) for students in Years 3, 5 and 7 are being held this week, on the following days - Tuesday15th, Wednesday 16th and Thursday 17th May. Friday the 18th May is set aside as a ʻmake-upʼ day for students who may have been absent on the days of the assessments. The assessments will begin at 9.00am on each of the days, so we ask that students arrive at school on time by 8.45am. National Walk Safely To School Day As indicated in our previous newsletter, Friday the 18th May is National Walk Safely to School Day. Over the last few years, Craigburn students and families have supported this day as a way of promoting the message of ʻActive Kids are Healthy Kidsʼ. Students from the student environment committee will be positioned at each of the main school entrances handing out stickers and certificates to students who ʻwalked safely to schoolʼ. We thank members of our environment group who will also be handing out fresh fruit at recess time to students who have participated in the event. This year, parents, carers and students can find the best walking route to school online at www.walk.com.au – the Pedestrian Council of Australiaʼs website. To discover a way that might be different from driving the car or taking the bus, the PCA this year is providing a Google Maps facility online. Parents and students can enter their home starting point and the school destination – and the new feature will plot the best walking route to school, maybe through quiet, safe side streets or local parkland. We hope that all Craigburn families consider participating in this yearʼs event.

30th Birthday Celebrations As part of Craigburn Primary Schoolʼs 30th Birthday celebrations a special community assembly will be held on Friday 25th May from 10.00am in the school hall to mark this special occasion. All parents, families and friends are welcome to attend this community assembly and join us for a morning tea to follow from 10.30am. We ask parents and friends to rsvp via the front office (phone 82704144 or email admin@craigburn.sa.edu.au) to confirm attendance.

Students and parents, both past and present have the opportunity to purchase a commemorative lapel pin which students can wear on their school uniform - at a cost of $3.00. Students are encouraged to wear their lapel pin at the assembly and throughout the commemorative year. The commemorative lapel pins can be purchased directly from the finance office at anytime. At the conclusion of the assembly, students will be given a special cupcake at no cost to have for their morning recess. Cake and tea / coffee will be freely available to all visiting parents and friends. If your child / children have any special dietary requirements regarding the cupcakes, eg nut/egg allergy, please inform us via the front office by no later than Friday 18th of May. We will endeavour to provide a suitable alternative for your child. SAPSASA Achievements Over the last week, we have had quite a number of our senior students who participated in SAPSASA cross country and soccer events. These events involve a high degree of organisation and coordination from volunteer parents and school staff. We congratulate all students and parents involved who represented our school. A great win by our soccer team and excellent representation and results from our cross country runners. Good luck to our footballers who play their first game this week. Please refer to the sports reports for a summary of these events.

Sports Day We acknowledge the efforts of all students, staff, parents and friends who participated in this year’s Sports Day held last Friday. Sports Days are great community events and we thank all parents, families and friends who were able attend. Special thanks to Karen Pettman, our specialist sports teacher, who coordinated this years event and to Nathan Lee, our groundsman for preparing the grounds for the day. We also thank our wonderful canteen and fundraising groups for providing and managing a range of food and fundraising services. Riley were victorious on the day. More results later in this newsletter.

Music SCHOOL CONCERT BAND These students have been rehearsing in the band since early in Term 1. Band rehearses each Wednesday from 1:25-2:15pm in the hall. They are progressing well and are looking forward to their first performance this term. Stay tuned! SENIOR CHOIR The 75 members of the choir were assessed in Week 2. They received an A for all the areas assessed – Presentation, Accuracy, Text, part Work, Tone Quality, Interpretation, Behaviour and Analysis & Response. Robyn Filmer who assessed the choir was very impressed with the students and their standard. Congratulations to all! They are well underway for their performances at the Festival of Music in the Festival Week in September and the Southern Festival at the Hopgood Theatre in October. PERFORMANCE TROUPE Congratulations to these students who successfully auditioned for a part in the Troupe this year – Emily M, Ben F and Ashlyn P. These students will perform in four concerts as part of the Festival of Music and also two concerts in the Southern Festival. They will commence weekly rehearsals and Sunday workshops in a few weeks. Ben and Ashlyn also have a solo part in the performances. Well done and good luck with the hard work ahead.

CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Ben F who has been selected to be in the Children’s Chorus for the State Opera’s Production of ‘La Boheme’! The performances will be in July. This is an amazing experience for him to be part of and certainly a step up from Jafer in Aladdin this time last year.

Canteen SPORTS DAY We hope everyone had a fantastic time on Sports Day – one of our school’s major highlights. We’d like to thank everyone for supporting the canteen by enjoying all the great food on offer. We cooked over 800 sausages, and the cakes sold out in record time! Thank you so much to all the parents who brought cakes to sell and who helped with running the cake stall, the canteen and the sausage sizzle during the day. In particular, thank you to Joanne, Ben, Martin and Lee–

along with Adam Grundy (Sue’s son) – who spent the whole day helping on the barbeque. We’d also like to mention a couple of extra special contributions. Firstly – from Annegret and Anna, who made wraps as an alternative to sausages and sold them at lunchtime on behalf of the canteen, as well as giving away lovely fresh fruit kindly donated by Woolworths. Secondly – Karen Virgo, who made 100 beautiful mascot bear biscuits in our four house colours to sell at the cake stall. They looked far too good to eat, but the children didn’t seem to have any trouble! There were so many helpers we can’t mention them all, but please know that we really appreciate your efforts – we couldn’t have done it without you. We estimate that we raised well over $2000 on the day, which goes towards reducing the cost of the regular canteen services. Week 5 & 6 Special Baked beans or spaghetti in a cup and Garlic Bread or Buttered Roll all for $3.00

School Sport SAPSASA Cross Country Friday 11th May saw 38 Craigburn students travel to Belair National Park for the Southern Heights district cross country event. Terrific support for each other and great sportsmanship was displayed with all 38 students completing the 2 - 3 km course. Thank you to Damien for training the students and the parents for marshalling and supporting the team on the day. A team of runners will now be selected from the Belair results to compete in the Cross Country Championships at Oakbank Racecourse on 31st May. SOCCER Soccer is about to kick off! Many thanks to those who have stepped up to take on the positions of coaches and managers. We have 86 children playing and our first matches are this Saturday with all teams playing away. The following week, Saturday 26th, all our teams are playing at Craigburn and we would love to see members of our school community here to support us. Refreshments, including a sausage sizzle, will be available so come along and enjoy the atmosphere.

Barb Heaton – Soccer Coordinator SAPSASA Soccer The Year 7 boys soccer team played a magnificent game by defeating Christies Beach Primary School 6-0, lead by their coach Damien Pawson. With their ball skills and fantastic passing sets hopefully the boys can defeat Woodcroft in the next round of the knockout – date to be determined! Thanks to all the parents that helped with transport and supporting the team.

NEW  SMOKE-­‐FREE  LAWS  From  31  May,  World  No  Tobacco  Day,  new  State  Government  legislation  will  come  into  effect  that:  

• Bans   smoking  within   10  metres   of   children’s   public  playground  equipment  

• Bans   smoking   under   covered   public   transport  waiting   areas,   including   bus,   tram,   train   and   taxi  shelters  and  other  areas  used  to  board  or  alight  from  public  transport  that  are  covered  by  a  roof  

• Gives   local   councils   and   other   incorporated   bodies  the  ability  to  apply  to  have  an  outdoor  area  or  event  declared  smoke-­‐free  

Anyone   aged   15   years   and   older   can   be   fined   for   these  offences   committed  under   Tobacco   Products   Regulation  Act  1997.
