What a difference a year makes! This time last year, we were gettingready to celebrate the Association’s 60th anniversary. Now we are inthe middle of a pandemic, and we are facing major economic andracial equality concerns. Throughout this time, the Associationcontinued to meet and address the concerns of the neighborhood.(During the pandemic we have been meeting via zoom.)
The issues we have been dealing with include crime, constructionissues and accidents, clean up and greening, the homeless,business reopening and membership communications.

MHNA Tour Guides Are Cooking Up a New MenuThe Murray Hill Neighborhood Association tour guides re-imaginedand repurposed their planned activities due to the coronavirus. Thenew walking tour was offered for free as a streaming video during theearly months of the pandemic. The Scavenger Hunt of HistoricMurray Hill was repurposed as a contest for all age groups, and thedeadline has been extended to September 27. The winner, who willbe announced at the MHNA Annual Meeting on October 1, willreceive a one night stay at the Shelburne Hotel & Suites by Affinia at303 Lexington Avenue (37th Street). The second place winner willreceive a $50 gift certificate for a local restaurant. Contest details.

NYPL’s SIBL branch is relocated and the Mid-Manhattan branchgets an update
The New York Public Library’s Mid-Manhattan Library, at 455 FifthAvenue (SE corner at 40th Street), has been redesigned, renovated,and renamed the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (SNFL). Withthe completion of the renovation of 455 Fifth Avenue, the branch isnow providing Grab & Go circulating services for their printed books.The full reopening, however, will be phased in, in accordance withthe City’s coronavirus guidance for the number of people allowed inindoor spaces. At this point, the library is offering online workshopsand talks.
The Science, Industry & Business Library (SIBL) circulating collection has been relocated from 188Madison Avenue to 455 Fifth Avenue, and the business library will be called the Stavros NiarchosFoundation Library Business Center. SIBL’s research collections have been moved to the Schwarzman
Building (main branch). The SIBL space on Madison Avenue between 34th & 35th Street has been sold,and will no longer be used by the NYPL.
The SNFL (Mid-Manhattan) branch moved to its current building, a former Arnold Constable & Companydepartment store, in 1981. The department store was built in 1914 on the site of the former Vanderbiltmansion.

A Fond Farewell to Linda FroccaroLinda Froccaro, a longtime resident of Murray Hill and a staunchsupporter of The Murray Hill Neighborhood Association passed awayon March 31, 2020, at Langone Hospital from Covid-19 at age 79. Asa MHNA volunteer she worked tirelessly at the annual MHNA StreetFestival Silent Auction for many years. A caring friend and daughter,warm, vibrant, generous, upbeat, and fun loving, Linda will be deeplymissed by all who knew her.

The Business Forum Welcomed MBP Gale Brewer for a NYCReopening DiscussionOn July 8, the Murray Hill Neighborhood Association Business Forum held our first ever Zoom webinar,where Co-Chair Lilli Seidman Davis moderated a Q&A with Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer.We also heard from a representative from the NYC Business Solutions of the Department of SmallBusiness Services who described numerous free services the agency provides to businesses. The MHNA's first virtual happy hour!On May 7, The Murray Hill Neighborhood Association hosted the association's first virtual happy hour onZoom. More than 100 people signed up and over 50 people attended. Trustee, Jon Harari hosted themeeting. We heard from several of our neighborhood's elected officials: Assembly Member HarveyEpstein and Council Members Keith Powers and Carlina Rivera. The MHNA trustees introducedthemselves and their committees, and members and guests all had a chance to introduce themselvesand to raise a glass. Our thanks to all who attended. We plan to have more of these virtual events. Lookfor details in the coming months.
Important Information about Grants and Loans for Building Ownersin the Murray Hill Historic District
There is good news for building owners in the Murray HillNeighborhood Historic District and in the National Register of HistoricPlaces. The Landmarks Preservation Commission has confirmedthat they have a small grant program that provides federally fundedgrants to low and moderate income eligible homeowners and non-profits for restoration work. In addition, there is a State HistoricPreservation Tax credit for homeowners in certain eligible censustracts. The New York Landmarks Conservancy also has a lowinterest loan program called the Historic Properties Fund forRestoration which provides free project management as part of the
program.

The MHNA Pitches In!On July 12th, the Murray Hill Neighborhood Association pitched in tohelp our Third Avenue Business Community re-open. Our volunteershelped clean out tree-beds and remove litter so that smallbusinesses and our community will have a more attractive andinviting business district for welcoming back customers. The initiativewas joint effort between the MHNA Greening and Cleaning andBusiness Committees. Gloves, hand sanitizer and litter grabbershelped to keep the event safe.

Published in the Bulletin of the New York Academy ofMedicine, October 15, 1939, the article “The Curious Career of Typhoid Mary” by George A. Soper tells
the story of Mary Mallon (1869-1938), aka Typhoid Mary, America’sfirst identified asymptomatic typhoid carrier. Controversy regardingthe balance between personal freedom vs. public health was asheated in those days as it is today. Typhoid Mary was quarantinedagainst her will. By the time of her death, more than 400asymptomatic carriers of typhoid had been identified. Mary Mallonwas the only one forced into quarantine.
