SOL-BRINE is a Life + Environmental Policy and Governance Project co-funded by the European Community. The duration of the project is 39 months (Start date: 01/10/2010 – End date: 31/12/2013).
The project is implemented in Tinos Island, Greece under the coordination of the municipality of Tinos and the cooperation of the associated beneficiaries National Technical University of Athens and Culligan Hellas SA.
The project aims at developing an energy autonomous brine treatment system for total elimination of brine, according to Zero Liquid Discharge principle (ZLD), being produced from Tinos seawater desalination plant. The project will result to high water recovery (>90%) and production of dry salt with market prospects, adding one more valuable output to the entire system.

Posidonia Oceanica, one of the most critical
and sensitive to brine release plants of the
Mediterranean Sean Environment
Welcome
Dear all,
Over the past few decades, it is clear
that water is an important thematic
element of the EC policy. Since 2006,
considerable resources have been
invested on more than 450 projects
related to water research supported
by the main EC programmes, namely
INTERREG, FP7, CIP and LIFE.
Of the 3,708 projects co-financed by
the LIFE programme since 1992, more
than 900 (>20%) concern water. This
way, the message that EC aims to
deliver is that “Water Is Necessary For
Life” and the SOL-BRINE LIFE+ project
is within this framework.
Recognizing that research is mostly
policy-driven and that industry,
research & policy should develop
creative collaborations, this
conference is addressed to all these
parties involved and in general to
everyone interested in sustainable
water & wastewater management. As
Head of the Scientific Committee, it is
my great pleasure to welcome you in
the Conference entitled “Water Is
Necessary For Life – WIN4Life” which
is organized in the framework of the
SOL-BRINE project and takes place at
the Cultural Foundation of Tinos
Island, in Greece. Also, given that
United Nations declared 2013 as the
International Year of Water
Cooperation, we hope that this
conference will contribute to the UN
objective for the year 2013 and that
the SOL-BRINE outputs will be widely
disseminated and exploited.
I am confident that your participation
in this Conference will be rewarding,
given that you will have the
opportunity to communicate and
exchange views about water &
wastewater management with
delegates and to visit the innovative
solar-driven brine treatment system in
the beautiful Island of Tinos, Greece.
