Multiple Intelligences Theory• In the past, people have defined
someone who is intelligent as an individual who can solve problems, use logic to answer questions, and think critically. The theory of multiple intelligences was developed in 1983 by Dr. Howard Gardner, professor of education at Harvard University. It suggests that the traditional notion of intelligence, based on I.Q. testing, is far too limited. Intrapersonal Intelligence
• The ability to know and understand one’s self, including goals, tendencies, feelings, talents, limitations. Typically need time alone to reflect or work.

Interpersonal Intelligence
• The ability to notice and make distinctions among other individuals; a strong understanding of other people. Typically enjoy working in a group of people, favor social pastimes, and like to take on
leadership roles.

Linguistic Intelligence• The ability to use language
to express one’s thoughts and to understand other
people orally or in writing; avid readers and/or
writers.
WORD SMARTMaster: Mark Twain
Musical Intelligence• The ability to hear music in
one’s head, and to hear tones, rhythms, and larger
musical patterns; might hum while working.
MUSIC SMARTMaster: Mozart
Logical-Mathematical Intelligence
• The ability to manipulate numbers, quantities, and operations accompanied by a love of dealing with
abstraction. Enjoy solving problems, fixing things or conducting experiments.

Visual-Spatial Intelligence
• The ability to represent the spatial world visually in one’s mind. Often see pictures in their mind and love to draw,
paint, sketch, or sculpt.

Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence• The ability to use the whole
body or parts of the body to solve a problem or create a
product. Often think best while moving, use gestures when
speaking and learn by doing.
BODY SMARTMaster: Peyton Manning
Naturalist Intelligence• The ability to discriminate among living things and to see patterns; also, a sensitivity to features of the natural world.

Spiritual/Existential Intelligence• The ability to see the “big
picture” and ask important questions. Enjoy thinking and are curious about life.
