    MultiJoint and Individual Plate Dowels

FLOOR CONTRACTION JOINTSThe function of a free contraction joint is toallow concrete shrinkage to take place.Although the majority of movement as theconcrete contracts is perpendicular to the joint, some relative movement between adjacentbays will also occur along the line of the joint. It is therefore vital that dowels allow formovement in both directions to avoidunnecessary stresses to develop in the slaband ultimately cracking.

Today’s concrete floor designs have fewerjoints than those in the past. With greaterdistance between joints, good joint detailingis essential to avoid expensive, prematuremaintenance.

Plate DowelsCarbon steel plate dowels are now common inindustrial and commercial concrete floorconstruction. They have replaced debondedround and square dowel bars as the preferredmethod of accommodating movement andtransferring load. Being wider than dowel bars, the bearing stresses between steel andconcrete are reduced so greater loads can becarried using plate dowels and, being shorter, they provide improved site access at the jointbefore the concrete is poured.

Early plate dowel design was based on theNorth American market where thin tapereddowels, typically 6mm thick, were developed. It is generally acknowledged that this design ofplate dowel is inadequate in the joint widths intoday’s applications. The load transferperformance reduces at a faster rate with atapered plate dowel than with a rectangularplate dowel.

ANCON PLATE DOWEL SYSTEMSThe Ancon range is suitable for use in groundbearing concrete floor slabs. Load transferperformance is improved when dowels areused in fibre reinforced concrete, whencompared to plain or fabric reinforcedconcrete.

MultiJointAncon MultiJoint is an all-in-one solution toload transfer, concrete contraction, armourededge protection and formwork. It is ideal foruse in factories, warehouses, distributioncentres and other applications where floorslabs are subject to high loads and wheeledtraffic. Its use can minimise slab depth, savingtime and materials, and prevent uneven verticalsettlement between slabs (pages 5-7).

Individual Plate DowelsIn addition to the MultiJoint system, Anconalso manufactures a range of individualrectangular plate dowels, housed in innovative, high strength plastic sleeves. These dowelscan be used where arris protection is notrequired or as part of a site-assembled systemwith the patented MultiJoint top profile if asteel joint edge is required (pages 8-9).

ANCON MULTIJOINTThe MultiJoint system is an all-in-one solutionto load transfer, concrete contraction, armoured edge protection and formwork inground bearing floor slabs. It is a prefabricatedsteel system supplied in a standard threemetre unit length and is available in fourheights to suit slab depths from 150mm.Units are simply lapped end-to-end on site.

A unique patented top rail transfers load intothe concrete at an angle, to avoid localisedcracking.

Prefabricated corner units provide continuity injoint arris protection at the most vulnerablearea of the slab. Standard four-way and three-way profiles are available, with non-standardintersections manufactured on request. Seepage 6 for dimensions.

Tabulated performance data is shown onpage 7 for a slab depth up to 350mm and ajoint width up to 40mm.

System ComponentsRectangular plate dowels pass through thesteel formwork and are housed in mouldedplastic sleeves. The number and dimensions ofthe plate dowels have been engineered toprovide the most effective combination ofconcrete and steel resistance for load transfer.Dowel centres are 600mm. The sleeves allowlateral and longitudinal movement.

The top profile comprises two square-edged12mm wide steel strips which provide heavy-duty joint edge protection. The unique, patented design creates a sharp joint edgeand transfers impact loads into the concrete ata 45˚ angle to avoid localised cracking.

The nylon fasteners, used to link the back-to-back profiles, strip as the joint opens allowingconcrete contraction to take place.

Studs are welded at 225mm horizontalcentres to provide anchorage in the concrete, resisting rotation and vertical movement asload is applied.

A rebar is welded to the studs on one sideof the unit for extra rigidity and ease ofhandling.

    MultiJoint and Individual Plate Dowels

Allowable longitudinal dowel movement increases as concrete contracts

    Item Code: MJ-SLC-3000Patent no. EP1756367

ANCON INDIVIDUAL PLATE DOWELSAncon individual plate dowels are a cost-effective means of transferring shear loads andaccommodating movement in load bearingground floors. They are typically installed at600mm horizontal centres and are ideal whenarris protection is not required.

The innovative tapered sleeves allow greaterlongitudinal dowel movement as the concretecontracts and joint width increases.

The Ancon ADD 75/10 is suitable for themajority of applications, however where agreater capacity is required or wider thanaverage joint widths are anticipated, theAncon AHM 100/10 system should beconsidered. The larger steel plate of thissystem provides a greater surface area toreduce bearing stresses on the concrete. This dowel typically provides a 30% increasein capacity for joints of over 20mm in slabsgreater than 250mm.

Tabulated performance data is shown onpage 9 for a slab depth up to 350mm and ajoint width up to 40mm. Contact Ancon forapplications outside these parameters.

Installation is a quick and simple process (seepage 11). The sleeve is fixed to the formworkand cast in with the first pour. The dowel isinserted into the sleeve, once the formwork isremoved.

When compared with plain round dowels orarmoured joint systems with integral platedowels, the use of individual plate dowels canimprove site access. The sub-base can becompacted and accurately levelled along thefull line of the joint, prior to the dowelcomponent being installed.

Joint Edge ProtectionThe unique top profile of the Ancon MultiJointsystem can be supplied with a nailing platewelded to the underside to facilitate its usewith timber formwork. This item is ideal forapplications requiring both an armoured jointedge and flexibility in the positioning of shear load dowels.

INSTALLATION GUIDANCEMultiJointJoint layout and height is specified on slabdrawings. These details should be accuratelymarked-out in string initially, to provide a clearvisual guide. Installation of the MultiJointsystem should begin either at an intersectionor at a column/wall.

Irrespective of type or size, all MultiJoint unitsare connected end-to-end in the same way.The top steel strips are overlapped and amechanical fixing, supplied with the system,is located through the slots.

Adjustable feet are available to level andsupport the MultiJoint units. By turning theshaped nut on the threaded section of thefoot, the system height is adjusted. The feetshould be located on the opposite side of thejoint to the first pour.

Working from both ends of a run, the finalsection to be installed will be at a mid-point.MultiJoint units are supplied in standard three

metre lengths, so the final section will usuallybe cut to length.

As work progresses, consistency in joint heightshould be checked with a laser level andvertical straightness verified with a spirit level.

To keep the feet stable during the pour, rebarpins should be driven into the sub-baseat an angle, through the hole in the flat.

The MultiJoint unit height will be 10mm to60mm less than the slab depth. At the higherend of this range, it may be necessary tominimise concrete egress below a MultiJointsystem. This can be achieved with the AnconPour Block, a robust L-shaped board which ispositioned directly on the sub-base on theside of the pour. Dimensions and itemcodes are shown in the table.

Once the concrete reaches sufficient strengthand the joint no longer requires support, therebar pins are removed and each foot is pulledclear.

OTHER ANCON PRODUCTSShear Load ConnectorsAncon DSD and DSDQ double-dowelconnectors are used to transfer shear acrossmovement joints in suspended concrete slabs. They are more effective at transferring loadand allowing movement than standard singledowels and can be used to eliminate doublecolumns at structural movement joints inbuildings. The Q version features a rectangularbox section to allow lateral and some rotationalmovement. A lockable dowel is now availablefor temporary movement joints in post-tensioned concrete frames.

Punching Shear ReinforcementAncon Shearfix is used within a slab to provideadditional reinforcement from punching sheararound columns. The system consists ofdouble-headed steel studs welded to flat railsand is designed to suit the load conditions andslab depth at each column using freecalculation software from Ancon.

Reinforcing Bar CouplersThe use of reinforcing bar couplers canprovide significant advantages over lappedjoints. Design and construction of the concretecan be simplified and the amount ofreinforcement can be reduced. The Anconrange includes parallel-threaded, tapered-threaded and mechanically-bolted couplers.

Reinforcing Continuity SystemsAncon Eazistrip is approved by UK CARESand consists of bent bars housed in agalvanised steel casing. Once installed, theprotective cover is removed and the barsstraightened ready for joining. As analternative, Ancon Starter Bars are rebarlengths supplied fixed to an Ancon couplerwhich can be cast into the face of theconcrete.

Insulated Balcony ConnectorsAncon Isolan connectors provide a thermalbreak between an internal concrete floor slaband an external concrete balcony to minimisecold bridging. Standard systems comprisingrigid CFC-free polystyrene insulation andduplex stainless steel shear reinforcement suitmost depths of cantilevered and simplysupported balconies.

Channel & Bolts for Fixing to ConcreteCast-in channels are available in different sizesranging from simple self-anchoring slots foruse with wall ties to large capacity anchorswith integral anchors; some sizes are availableplain-backed for surface fixing. Expansionbolts and resin anchors complete the range.

Individual Plate DowelsBuilt-in ring shanked nails on Ancon sleevesmake installation a quick and easy process.

    1. Fix the sleeve to the formwork using thenails provided, at the required depth andspacing (normally on the centre line of theslab, typically at 450-600mm horizontalcentres). Do not remove the protective strip onthe nailplate as this protects the sleeve fromconcrete ingress.

    4. Place reinforcement if required and proceedwith the second pour, again ensuring goodcoverage of concrete around the plate dowel.

    3. When concrete reaches sufficient strength, strike the formwork. New sub-base can beaccurately levelled and compacted right up tothe slab edge. Flatten nails and insert thedowel into the sleeve by puncturing theprotective strip.

    2. Fix fabric reinforcement if required. Pourconcrete, ensuring good coverage around thesleeve component.
