Multi-Tag Physical User Interfaces for Mobile Devices

• Mobile Devices + Physical “Tag”– RFID/NFC Tag– Image

• Single Tag Usage– Fetch product information (CueCat?)– Link to Web Site (advertising)– Ticketing

Multi-Tag Physical User Interfaces for Mobile Devices

• Multi-Tag– Combine multiple options

• No need to permutate– Perform more complicated actions than link or UID

• Implement part of interface on physical surface• Direct Navigation• Restaurant Menu Example

– Select from multiple objects

• Compensate for limitations of device– Small screen size

• One issue: Physical surface is static

Spatial Audio Interfaces

• Idea: Use spatial audio to facilitate processing multiple audio streams at once

• Experiment: Have user try to listen to a podcast while navigating a hierarchical audio menu

Spatial Audio Interfaces

• Test 1: Pause news story while navigating menu

• Test 2: Have both play concurrently• Test 3: When user is navigating menu,

“minimize” podcast by moving it right and making it quieter

• Test 4: Concurrently, but podcast is always “minimized”

Spatial Audio Interfaces(Results)

• Unsurprisingly, most people didn’t like to listen to the tracks concurrently

• Of concurrent options, spatial preferred to non-spatial

• Tasks took longer with concurrent, accuracy on questions about podcasts dropped– Small sample size, not much difference in outcomes

between three concurrent methods– Possibly smaller hit for spatial options, particularly for

question accuracy
