MCCRAKEN TAKES SAM F. DAVIS, SETS TRACK RECORDBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

Trainer Ian Wilkes keeps saying he hasn't gotten a read yet on just how good Janis Whitham's home-

bred McCraken is. What's certain in the aftermath of the colt's 1 1/2-length win Feb. 11 Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) is this—the son of Ghostzapper is as formidable a force as there is in the current sophomore male ranks.

The build-up to McCraken's seasonal bow concluded with results to match. Under some left-handed urging from jockey Brian Hernandez Jr., the unbeaten colt unleashed a wicked turn of foot down the middle of the track and held off a mild bid from Tapwrit late to win the $250,000 Sam F. Davis in a track-record time of 1:42.45 going 1 1/16 miles at Tampa Bay Downs.

In addition to remaining unblemished in four career starts, McCraken took that all-important step forward in his transition from precocious juvenile to leading contender on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Wilkes said this week the Sam F. Davis was a stepping stone, and should be viewed as such. Fully cranked or not, McCraken looked every bit the impressive contender as he saved ground early on while State of Honor took the field through fractions of :23.63 and :47.15. Swinging out with about a quarter mile to go, the bay colt used his trademark kick to stamp himself as the pro-tem leader in the divisional ranks.

"If he’s good enough, he’ll take us there,” Wilkes said. "I don’t know how good (he is). But there have been some nice horses that have run a mile-and-a-sixteenth here.

"We’ve got a long way to go. This is not a one-race program. I want two more races for him, then the Derby. This is just one stepping stone, and we keep building."

The Sam F. Davis marked the first start for McCraken outside of Churchill Downs, and the tricky Florida surface has been the undoing of many a notable runner in years past.

Just as he did in his career debut last Oct. 2, in the Street Sense Stakes 28 days later, and again during his 1 1/4 length score in the Nov. 26 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2), McCraken methodically bided his time before swallowing up his foes with a stride that has yet to reach its bottom.

When Hernandez moved him out after tracking along in sixth and asked from more around the final turn, it was as if the Louisiana native hit a switch and turned on a set of afterburners. Despite some slight bearing out in the lane, McCraken continued on comfortably to the wire over a fast track, suggesting there is more ability to be unearthed.

"He puts a lot of confidence in you, that’s for sure," Hernandez said. “You’ve just got to go with it and ride him with confidence. I asked him at about the half-mile pole and he hesitated a bit, but I think that was his way of telling me ‘Don’t worry. We’re going to get the job done.'"

Tapwrit got up for second over pacesetter State of Honor, with Wild Shot finishing fourth. Fact Finding, No Dozing, Six Gun Salute, Chance of Luck, and King and His Court completed the order of finish.

McCraken paid $5, $3.60 and $2.80 across the board at odds of 3-2, and now has 20 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard.

Out of the Seeking the Gold mare Ivory Empress, McCraken improved his earnings improved to $310,848. With seemingly room to improve his form as well, even the understated Wilkes couldn't help but concede the spotlight is rightfully going to be on his barn in the weeks ahead.

"Let’s pay all credit to the horse,” Wilkes said. “He’s taking us there. Let’s pay attention to him.” BH

ALMANAAR RUNS TRUE TO GULFSTREAM PARK TURF 'CAP SCOREBy Claire Novakt @BH_CNovak

The past performances for Shad-well Stable's homebred Alma-

naar read like a countdown headed into the $350,000 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap (G1T) Feb. 11.

A dual group 3 winner in France, the Dubawi gelding joined trainer Chad Brown's string in September and finished fourth in a Belmont Park allowance going 1 1/16 miles on the turf, came in third under similar conditions there in October, and then ran second in his 5-year-old debut by just a neck to longshot Flatlined in the Jan. 14 Ft. Lauderdale Stakes (G2T), also a 1 1/16-mile turf test.

Stepped up into grade 1 company for the first time under Joel Rosario and stretching out to 1 1/8 miles in a field of eight older runners, Almanaar ran straight and true to the Gulfstream Park winner's circle, hitting the wire in front by three-quarters of a length to secure his first North American score. The final time was 1:45.63 on firm turf.

Charting a less direct course was second-place finisher Beach Patrol, who after setting the pace was found guilty by the stewards of interference with War Correspondent in the stretch run. Beach Patrol was placed fourth. Moving to second was All Included, while War Correspondent was placed third.

Beach Patrol, also trained by Brown, cut an opening quarter in :23.59 while tracked closely by Eirigh for the front spot. Racing in the second tier through a half in :47.08 were War Correspondent,

Lukes Alley, and three-wide favorite Divisidero, sent off at odds of 2-1.

"He broke really well," Rosario said of his mount, who tracked fifth throughout the early going. "I wanted to follow somebody but I got shut off a little bit on the first turn. But I took it step by step, trying to take my time with him so I could let him finish in the end. He did well. Turning for home I was a little outside but he was very happy, really enjoying where he was and giving everything to me."

Rosario tipped Almanaar out and set him down four wide around the turn, chasing Divisidero, who flattened instead of charging on. Beach Patrol and War Correspondent battled for the advantage, but in the end it was the surging Almanaar who closed through a 1:34.02 mile and got up in time for the win.

“He ran great the last race ... but today he had a little more room to work at an mile and an eighth," Brown said. "He got a beautiful set up. Joel fits the horse perfectly; it’s the second

time in a row he has given him a flawless trip on this turf course. I’m proud of the way the horse drove him down the center of the track.”

Almanaar was sent off at odds of 3-1 and returned $8, $4.40, and $3.20. All Included, a 15-1 shot, was worth $13.40 and $5.80. War Correspondent, also a longshot at 22-1, paid $8.40. Lukes Alley, Divisidero, Flatlined, and Eirigh completed the order of finish.

The winner was bred in Great Britain out of the Bahhare mare Baqah (IRE). He improved his record to 5-3-2 from 13 starts.

“Everything is in play for these two horses—the Woodford Reserve on Derby Day at Churchill is a grade 1 I have interest in with both these horses," Brown said of Almanaar and Beach Patrol. "Down the road, races like the Manhattan (G1) at a mile and a quarter. Beach Patrol is already proven at a mile and a quarter in the Secretariat. There are lots of options. Hopefully, they stay healthy." BH

HOWARD, CATALANO SOPHOMORES REV UPBy Michael Adolphsont AdolphsonRacing

It is rare that one trainer—much less two—can be renowned for their patience, yet concurrently respect-

ed for their affinity with young horses. Such dexterity is what New Orleans is hosting this winter in the Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots barns of Neil Howard and Wayne Catalano, who each have laid serious tread on the Road to the Kentucky Derby and Longines Kentucky Oaks (both G1) in the last month.

Each veteran trainer has synchronously been applauded for their ability to develop young animals into superstars—Catalano with three 2-year-old

Breeders' Cup trophies and Howard having sculpted a perfect 5-for-5 grade 1-winning 2-year-old season for Summer Squall before winning the following year's Preakness Stakes (G1)—while also showing marked fortitude in the development of quality older horses. Howard's hands-on approach helped mature Mineshaft into the 2003 Horse of the Year, while Catalano carved out a career that saw Stephanie's Kitten as an even better grade 1-winning 4-year-old than when a Breeders' Cup-conquering juvenile.

In 2017 Howard has Guest Suite, who showed his class and hinted at an intriguing trajectory when taking the Jan. 21 Lecomte Stakes (G3) to kick off his sophomore season. The son of Quality Road is a

homebred of William S. Farish and Lora Jean Kilroy and has done little wrong in five starts, while improving with each effort. The bay gelding now aims toward the $400,000 Risen Star Stakes (G2) on Feb. 25 and put an exclamation on his preparation with a near-bullet half-mile drill Feb. 7. In what was his second work since taking the Lecomte, he drilled the second-best of 25 moves at the distance over the deep New Orleans oval in :47 4/5.

"I was very pleased," Howard said. "It's the usual cliché of 'it's what we were looking for,' but it really was. It was his second half-mile since the race and we'll likely work him five-eighths next week with (regular jockey) Robby (Albarado) on him and then an easy half-mile the week before the race.

"I think I'm seeing some physical positives with him," Howard continued. "He's a smooth, nice-looking horse, but I think his weight is actually looking really good. I say that cautiously because it's hard to notice that when you look at him every day, but this morning I was impressed when I looked at him. Like all young horses, they're developing, but I'm pleased."

As for developing, Howard is taking a more deliberate approach when it comes to another promising 3-year-old in his barn, B. C. W. T. Ltd.'s Society Beau. A gorgeous son of Curlin out of the A. P. Indy mare Seattle Society, the bay colt is a grandson of grade 2 winner Westerly Breeze and has consistently held his own against some of the best of his generation. The one-time winner has hit the board in seven of eight starts, racing against the likes of grade 1-placed stakes winners Not This Time, Lookin At Lee, and highly regarded Shareholder Value. Last out, he was an elevated second to well-intended Risen Star possible It's Your Nickel in allowance company on Jan. 27.

"I really think he's a nice colt and he ran great the other day," Howard said. "I thought the mile wasn't his cup of tea and he wants to run a little longer. I could run him in the Risen Star, but I would rather be more judicious with him and stay in the allowance races for now. The further the better and I wouldn't rule out turf

for him in the future. If we play our cards right, he could be a very good horse if the opportunities are there to get through the conditions."

Catalano has a two-pronged, two-track attack on the first weekend in May, with Fair Grounds-based queen of the barn Farrell and lightly raced stakes winner Uncontested at Oaklawn Park. Each horse whistled in their works this week, with Catalano on hand for both. On Feb. 5, Uncontested—a son of Tiz Wonderful and half-brother to Catalano-trained grade 3 winner Solitary Ranger—fired a warning shot in the form of a five-furlong, best-of-55 bullet in 1:00 3/5 with regular rider Channing Hill up. Catalano then hopped a flight to New Orleans, where Farrell answered with an effortless 1:01 1/5 for the same distance with Jose Valdivia, Jr., subbing for Hill.

"They were excellent," Catalano said. "They now have a flight that goes from Little Rock to New Orleans, so that was great. I don't know that Farrell will work again before the race, but she went really well. She's feeling good and Valdivia liked how she went. Everything is on schedule so far."

In her last two starts, Farrell has taken the Golden Rod Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs and the listed Silverbulletday Stakes at Fair Grounds by a combined 8 3/4 lengths for breeder Coffeepot Stables. She heads to the $200,000 Rachel Alexandra Stakes (G2), which has proven a key prep in recent years for the Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) and Kentucky Oaks.

Uncontested vaulted from a 6 1/2-furlong maiden debut romp in October to the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) six weeks later, running an admirable fourth after setting the pace for owners Robert LaPenta and Harry T. Rosenblum. In just his third start, and first of his sophomore season, he toyed with seven others in the $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes on Jan. 16, sauntering home in the slop by 5 1/4 lengths. He races next on Feb. 20 in the $500,000 Southwest Stakes (G3), and his bullet move was his third tab topper in his last four drills.

"The colt is doing good, as well," Catalano concluded. "He's got a lot of raw talent and has the speed you need. I think he could develop into a really top horse and—like I said before—you never know when it's going to rain on the first Saturday in May." BH

SHARP AZTECA ROMPS IN SEASON DEBUTBy Claire Novakt @BH_CNovak

Sharp Azteca may have been making his season debut Feb.

11 in the $350,000 Hardacre Mile Gulfstream Park Handicap (G2) at Gulfstream Park, but the Gelfen-stein Farm runner came ready for action.

Matching strides with 18-1 shot Blofeld through opening fractions of :23.61 and :46.21 in a field of eight older horses, the son of Freud easily dispatched that rival with a powerful move through three-quarters in 1:10.05 under Edgard Zayas. He galloped home while widening away through seven eighths in 1:22.02, and hit the finish line geared down with a 4 1/2-length advantage over Awesome Slew, his closest rival.

Final time for the mile test was 1:34.55 on a fast track. It was Sharp Azteca's fourth win in as many starts at the distance and third in four tries at Gulfstream.

"Coming out of the gate he got squeezed a little, so I was a little worried, but then I saw (Blofeld) going with him and that was exactly what I wanted," trainer Jorge Navarro said. "He kind of gets comfortable when he makes the lead on his own."

Sharp Azteca closed out his 3-year-old campaign in December with a runner-up finish by half a length to Mind Your Biscuits in the Malibu Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park. He also won the Pat Day Mile (G3) earlier last year after breaking his maiden and winning in

allowance company, and won the City of Laurel Stakes in November at Laurel Park as a prep for the Malibu.

"This horse has been training like a real horse. Since the day I bought him I knew I had something special here," Navarro said. "My blacksmith did an amazing job with a quarter crack, and we've got him right now."

Sharp Azteca was a $220,000 purchase by his current connections from the De Meric Sales consignment to the 2015 Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s spring sale of 2-year-olds in training. He was bred in Kentucky by Cloyce C. Clark Jr. out of the Saint Liam mare So Sharp, and went through the OBS 2014 sale of August yearlings, where he was picked up for $35,000 by Blas Perez from the Select Sales consignment.

Sharp Azteca returned $6, $3.80, and $2.20, Awesome Slew brought $5.60 and $3.40 at 6-1, and Tommy Macho, the 8-5 choice, paid $2.40. Completing the order of finish were Awesome Banner, Zulu, Squadron A, Blofeld, and Hy Riverside. Realm was scratched.

“It worked out perfect for him. I was a little worried because I didn’t really want to go to the lead because he needs a horse to be a target,” Zayas said. “My horse, he’s a grinder. He’s a once-paced horse and he just doesn’t stop. Coming to the turn I hit him twice and he picked it up, and after that it was all over.”

Navarro plans to point Sharp Azteca to the $1 million Godolphin Mile (G2) March 25 in Dubai before targeting the Metropolitan Handicap (G1) June 10 at Belmont Park. BH

VALE DORI MAKES IT A TRIPLEBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

Vale Dori continued her dominance of the older female division in Southern California with her third

straight grade 2 score Feb. 11 in the $200,000 Santa Maria Stakes at Santa Anita Park.

Following wins in the Dec. 3 Bayakoa Handicap (G2) and the Jan. 14 La Canada Stakes (G2), Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum's daughter of Asiatic Boy again kicked clear in the stretch Saturday to win by 1 3/4 lengths.

After acting up in the gate and unseating jockey

Mike Smith, Vale Dori raced close to early pacesetter Midnight Toast as she set fractions of :23.66 and :47.35 through a half-mile. Vale Dori assumed command by 1 1/2 lengths after six furlongs in 1:11.68, was never seriously challenged in the stretch, and finished off the 1 1/16 miles on a wet-fast track in 1:43.19.

In the absence of champions Songbird and Stellar Wind, who are just beginning their training toward 2017 campaigns, Vale Dori has done nothing but win.

"She's just gotten good," said Smith, who is also the regular rider on Songbird. "There's not a Songbird or Stellar Wind in there, so that certainly helps, but she's climbing the ladder. At some point she's going to have a chance at them."

Show Stealer, who also finished behind Vale Dori last time out in the La Canada, again was runner-up in the Santa Maria, 3 3/4 lengths clear of Autumn Flower, who finished third in the La Canada.

"She keeps beating the same group, so that's good," said winning trainer Bob Baffert. "She's just steady and she's right there. The gate thing, I think she's very funny about her head. I think the gate guy might have touched her near her ear, and she will do that. You've got to be real careful with her."

Lady Tapit finished an even fourth, followed by Sheer Pleasure and Midnight Toast to complete the order of finish.

Bred in Argentina by Abolengo, Vale Dori now has a 7-3-1 record from 12 starts with earnings of $694,943. Her only losses since relocating to the United States from Dubai came to Stellar Wind and Beholder in the 2016 Zenyatta Stakes (G1), where she finished third, and in her North American debut in August at Del Mar.

"We're definitely looking at the Santa Margarita (G1) next," Baffert said. "That's the plan. Those South American horses, they love the mud. They like wet tracks. It's good to know, but she's been a joy to train. ... She's making money, we enjoy watching her run, and she tries hard every time." BH

BOLO BREATHES BETTER, REPEATS IN ARCADIABy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

After some strangely bad per-formances in 2016, Golden Pe-

gasus Racing and Earle Mack's Bolo needed throat surgery to repair a breathing issue.

During the stretch run of the $200,000 Arcadia Stakes (G2T) Feb. 11 at Santa Anita Park, it sure seemed like his lungs were full of air.

In his first race since July, Bolo was 2 1/2 lengths off leaders What a View and Conquest Enforcer with a furlong to run, but closed rapidly on the outside and just got a head in front at the wire to win the Arcadia

for the second year in a row. He returned from an almost identical layoff to win last year's Arcadia.

"I can't really find the words to describe it, to be honest," said winning trainer Carla Gaines. "To me, I was really excited to get him back to a race, but there were some things against him. He missed some training (because of rain) and he's such a big horse, so it's a task to get him ready, but he's just a sensational athlete."

What a View came in second, three-quarters of a length clear of co-favorites Conquest Enforcer and Ring Weekend, who were just a nose apart in third and fourth.

"I had a bit of trouble, (but) he's so strong—it's like pulling on the barn," jockey Mike Smith said of Bolo's trip in the first turn of the mile

turf test, where he had to steady the son of Temple City. "If you give him daylight, he'll just run off with me, which he's done before."

Grade 1 winner What a View had a clear lead with fractions of :23.74, :46.92, and 1:10.98 through six furlongs, but was challenged early in the stretch by Conquest Enforcer and dug in on the inside. Bolo's outside rally to the wire finished off the mile in 1:34.51 on a turf course rated good.

"I thought I had it once I fought off Conquest Enforcer, which I thought was the horse to beat," said What a View's jockey, Tyler Baze. "He came head-to-head with my horse and my horse dug in hard. Especially that last sixteenth of a mile, I thought, 'Good. We're home free.' Then Bolo—it's frustrating."

Bolo, who was bred in Kentucky by Spendthrift Farm, out of the Chief Seattle mare Aspen Mountain, now has a 5-1-2 record from 13 starts, with earnings of $614,045.

"He's something else, this horse," said Keith Brackpool, representing Bolo's co-owner, Golden Pegasus Racing. "Carla and I were saying, 'get third, get third,' then 'get second, get second.' I didn't think we had won until I saw the replay." BH

CHANEL'S LEGACY POWERS HOME IN MARTHA WASHINGTONBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

The days of Chanel's Legacy be-ing overlooked against stakes

company may be coming to an end.The gray or roan daughter of

Dominus kept favored Perfect Wife in her sights through the $125,000 Martha Washington Stakes at Oaklawn Park before delivering a knock-out blow around the final turn en route to taking the one-mile test by 2 1/2 lengths over My Sweet Stella at odds of 13-1.

Chanel's Legacy was sent off at those double-digit odds despite coming into the Martha Washington off another 2 1/2 length win—also over My Sweet Stella—in her seasonal debut in the Jan. 21 Dixie Belle Stakes at the Hot Springs, Ark., track. The Lynn Chleborad-trained 3-year-old filly duplicated that outing Saturday, rating just off the hip of Perfect Wife through fractions of :23.51 and :46.90 before advancing to that one's neck approaching the final turn.

Perfect Wife gave it up under the heat, while Chanel's Legacy took control of the eight-horse field coming into the head of the lane. My Sweet Stella gamely ran on after taking up sharply trying to advance between horses on the turn, while Chanel's Legacy was well in control as she notched her fourth win from seven starts.

"It's very good, because she is ratable," Chleborad said. "And they

did go pretty quick fractions when they go :23 2/5 and :46 4/5. That's not exactly walking the dog, you know. I think that's kind of fast. I'm like, 'Oh, I hope she has enough to finish.' She just kept going.

"She trains like that in the morning. She was ready for this race, and I feel we had her as good as we could get her. She showed that she can do that."

Owned and bred by Poindexter Thoroughbreds, Chanel's Legacy earned 10 points toward eligibility in the Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1), which is limited to 14 starters. Both Chleborad and owner Allen Poindexter said Chanel's Legacy would likely make her next start in the $200,000 Honeybee Stakes (G3) March 11, a final prep before the $400,000 Fantasy Stakes (G3) April 14.

"She ran huge," said winning jockey Alex Birzer. "She put me in a great spot. She just sat there as the leader weakened. She just picked it up an extra notch and just kept at her business."

The final time for the eight furlongs was 1:38.51.

My Sweet Stella finished 3 3/4 lengths in front of Torrent in third. Lovely Bernadette finished fourth with Ever So Clever rounding out the top five. Benner Island, Queen Bernardina, and Perfect Wife completed the order of finish.

Out of the Value Plus mare Chanel Number Mine, Chanel's Legacy improved her earnings to $234,394. BH

NORTH AMERICA, THUNDER SNOW ACE DUBAI STAKESBy Tom Hallt @lordatwar

The two grade 3 stakes on Meydan's Feb. 11 card moved their runners one step closer to the big

prizes offered during the March 25 Dubai World Cup Festival, as Qatar Bloodstock's North America deliv-ered a scintilating performance in the Firebreak Stakes Sponsored by Meydan One Mall.

Contested at 1,600 meters (about one mile) on the dirt, this race drew a field of eight that included three U.S.-bred runners. Heading the field was the Satish Seemar-trained North America, who was perfect in three starts at Meydan since the Dubai track launched its winter racing carnival.

Desert Force and Heavy Metal took the lead through the early running, with North America comfortably placed third on the rail. Coming into the turn, North America slipped through to take command under jockey Richard Mullen. Ennobled Friend, a Kentucky-bred son of Distorted Humor, gave futile chase through the stretch but to no avail. Mullen had so much horse beneath him that in the closing stages of the race, he was slowing North America's powerful strides. The pair won by seven lengths over Ennobled Friend with the Mike de Kock-trained Argentine-bred Lindo Amor in third. Time for the distance was 1:36.51.

Qatar Bloodstock bred North America in Great Britain and consigned the son of Dubawi to the

Tattersalls December foals sale in 2012, where John Ferguson bought him for $168,431 (U.S. funds). North America raced for Godolphin at 2 and 3, but despite being in the hunt had failed to win. Godolphin offered him for sale and he was acquired by present owner Imhamed M I Nagem.

North America is out of the grade 1-placed Yankee Victor mare Northern Mischief, a half sister to 2001 Eclipse Award-winning champion older female Gourmet Girl (Cee's Tizzy). He is also the first 2017 stakes victor for Dubawi, who has sired 132 other added-money winners. Winning his fourth race from 10 starts, the bay gelding padded his earnings to more than $250,000.

Two races later, Godolphin's 3-year-old colt Thunder Snow made his 2017 debut in the UAE 2,000 Guineas Sponsored by District One Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum City.

Already a group 1 winner on turf (the seven-furlong Criterium International at Saint Cloud), Thunder Snow made a successful transition to eight furlongs on the dirt with a 5 3/4-length victory in what was presumably his prep for the UAE Derby (G1) on World Cup day.

Trained by Saeed bin Suroor and ridden by Christophe Soumillon, the tall, muscular, graceful bay colt from the first Northern Hemisphere crop of Helmet (Exceed And Excel) had little trouble dispatching his eight rivals.

Silent Assassin and Han Sense, a Kentucky-bred from the first crop of champion Hansen, set the pace. Soumillon and Thunder Snow were close at hand along with a pair of Kentucky-breds, Godolphin's Capezzano (Bernardini) and Charles Fipke's Bee Jersey (Jersey Town).

After Thunder Snow moved easily into the lead, he was briefly challenged by Bee Jersey, whose shortening strides could not keep pace with his courage, allowing the long-striding Thunder Snow to pull farther ahead throughout the stretch. Final time for the journey was 1:38.48. Bee Jersey finished second and Capezzano, third. Despite the rigors of a long journey and quarantine, Iowa-bred Han Sense came fifth.

Thunder Snow is one of four stakes winners produced by the winning Dubai Destination mare Eastern Joy (all her foals to race). Her dam, the group 2 winner Red Slippers (Nureyev), also foaled group 1 winner West Wind, by Machiavellian. BH
