MTU Aero Engines is Germany’s largest enginemanufacturer. The company designs, develops,manufactures, markets and supports commer-cial and military aircraft engines and industrialgas turbines. It has content on engines in allpower and thrust categories and across allmajor engine components and subsystems,such as compressors, combustors, turbinesand engine controls. The company cooperateswith the world’s major engine makers. Mainte-nance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of commer-cial engines being an MTU core competency,the company is the world’s largest provider ofindependent engine services. MTU employsabout 7,500 people and has affiliates in majorregions and markets worldwide.

From its headquarters in Munich, MTU op-erates engine MRO affiliates in Germany(Hannover and Berlin-Brandenburg), Canada(Vancouver), China (Zhuhai), Malaysia (KualaLumpur) and Poland that provide individuallytailored service packages at the customers’door-step.

MTU’s maintenance shops have made “repairbeats replacement” their motto. The develop-ment of innovative repair techniques is part ofthe company’s core competency and thesetechniques are unparalleled anywhere. Theshops have an international reputation fordelivering maximum quality. The high qualitystandards shared by all locations are continu-ously being enhanced through the extensiveexchange of know-how and experience amongthe shops and through continuous trainingactivities.

MTU Maintenance Zhuhai is a 50-50 joint venture between parent company MTU AeroEngines and China’s largest air carrier, ChinaSouthern Airlines.

Currently, China Southern Airlines operates afleet of more than 350 modern aircraft. Thecarrier maintains an extensive network servingmore than 905 domestic and international des-tinations in 169 countries from its Guangzhouand Beijing hubs. In 2008, it carried more than58 million passengers.

China Southern Airlines is China’s largest air-line. It operates the most technologically ad-vanced airline fleet in China and became amember of SkyTeam.

Covering an area of 156,000 square meters,the facility is located in Zhuhai’s free tradezone in southern China, in close proximity toHong Kong and Macao.

The shop improves MTU’s access to the boom-ing Chinese market. For China Southern andother airlines in China and elsewhere in Asia,the shop in turn provides access to a highlyflexible provider of state-of-the-art commercialengine services, helping the airlines to reducecosts and shorten turnaround times.

Having started operations in January 2003,MTU Maintenance Zhuhai brings quality over-haul and repair services for V2500 and CFM56engines to the doorstep of airlines in Chinaand elsewhere in Asia.

The maintenance shop repairs around 200 en-gines annually and boosts that number to 300over time.

The shop was certified and approved by CAAC(Civil Aviation Administration of China) in April2003, by the European EASA in July 2003 andby FAA (Federal Aviation Authority) in Novem-ber 2003. In total MTU Maintenance Zhuhaiuses roughly 20 approvals worldwide.

With a total of $189 million invested in civilconstruction, advanced equipment and inven-tory, MTU Maintenance Zhuhai is one of thelargest engine maintenance, repair and over-haul shops in Asia.

The new state-of-the-art facility is equipped toperform all necessary processes, such as partscleaning, high-pressure water stripping, non-destructive testing, surface treatment, welding,machining, plasma spraying and heat treat-ment, which gives the shop full repair capabili-ties to the highest industry standards, all underone roof.

The test cell is one of the largest and mostadvanced in the world. It is 100 meters long,13 by 13 meters in cross-section and has in-take and exhaust ducts 30 meters high. It ac-commodates all commercial engine types upto a thrust of 150,000 pounds and is capableof testing 500 engines annually.

MTU Maintenance Zhuhai is the secondbiggest maintenance center of MTU and hasbecome a global player in today’s engine MRO industry.

Under an extensive technology transfer program, MTU Maintenance Zhuhai had some 100 technicians cross-trained at MTU’s German facilities for more than six months. MTU Maintenance Zhuhai technicians weretrained also at MTU Maintenance Canada, where the CFM56-3 is overhauled.
