Mediterranean Seagrass Workshop 2006 Program 1

Welcome! On behalf of the Organising Committee and Secretariat, we welcome you to Malta for the first Mediterranean Seagrass Workshop (MSW 2006)! MSW 2006 is the first meeting to give emphasis to research on all seagrass species occurring in the Mediterranean Sea. The Workshop is aimed at bringing together seagrass experts to discuss current knowledge of the state of Mediterranean seagrasses, and to present aspects of their latest research. The Workshop also welcomes researchers from outside the Mediterranean, particularly those working on seagrasses that are common to the region and other parts of the world (e.g. Zostera marina). Because of its location at the centre of the Mediterranean basin, Malta has been selected as the appropriate venue for MSW 2006. The Maltese Islands support very extensive seagrass meadows, particularly of Posidonia oceanica, some of which extend to unusual depths (circa 44 m). The official host of the workshop is the Department of Biology at the University of Malta (UOM), which has a long tradition of marine biological research. The Workshop will focus on three main themes: (i) Seagrass Biology and Ecology; (ii) Ecosystem Services of Seagrass Beds; and (iii) Monitoring, Management and Restoration of Seagrass Habitat. It is hoped that presentations within all three themes will promote active discussion on findings of recent studies, help workers to identify new topics for research, and encourage exchange of ideas for collaboration. The holding of MSW 2006 would not have been possible without the support of the Head of the Department of Biology (UOM), the Computing Services Centre (UOM) and the assistance of members of the various Committees: Local, International and Scientific. We also thank the several agencies that have provided sponsorship and travel funds for candidates, and various organisations for granting patronage. Last, but not least, we thank you, the participants, for your keen interest in the event and for the invaluable contribution. We hope that your participation at MSW 2006 will be pleasant and fruitful!
