DESIGN OF IC ENGINEDesign of following components will be carried out.

Basic functions of IC engine cylinder1) To retain the working fluid such as mixture of petrol and air or diesel and air2) To guide the piston

-Combustion of fuel takes place inside the Cylinder and therefore it is subjected to very hightemperature.-For this cooling arrangements are required

-Generally two types of cooling systems are used.Air cooling and water cooling

Air cooling

-In small engines- cylinder and frame are made ofOne-piece casting.-In large engines- a separate cylinder liner is used.

MATERIALS for cylinder and cylinder liner

A thin cylinder may fail due to following stresses,1) Stress in tangential direction (Hoop stress) or circumferential stress 2) Longitudinal stress

** Hoop stress is twice the longitudinal stress hence design should be based on it.Thickness can be calculated as,
