Why choose Bristol?
The Water and Environmental Management postgraduate course is a one-year specialist MSc which focuses on producing the next generation of leaders and high-level practitioners in water and environmental management. As a postgraduate you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to be confident in developing and implementing the scientific information and models, engineered solutions and policy and management frameworks necessary to deal with water resource and environmental challenges in the 21st century.
The course is located in the University of Bristol’s world class water resources research group, ranked 1st in the UK and 11th in the world for the quality and depth of research into water resources in the most recent Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.
Staff from this research group are actively involved in teaching and supervising on the MSc course, with many research projects linked to ongoing research of this group.
To ensure that the MSc is underpinned by theoretical, research and practical aspects of water and environmental management, teaching is undertaken both by academics and external industry specialists.
The course is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) meaning our curriculum and facilities meet the demanding standards held by this profession so you can benefit from continued professional development once in the workplace.
Water is essential for life. Society must find new, innovative and collaborative approaches to water resource management to address alarming threats to water security caused by environmental degradation, unsustainable demand and climate change.
What will you study?
You will be exposed to the fundamental engineering and environmental processes that govern water resource and environmental systems, as well as the policy, regulation and management tools necessary to manage these systems sustainably. Units include numerical and statistical methods, hydrological, hydrogeological and hydrometeorological processes and environmental policy, regulation and management tools. You can also choose two of three optional units in integrated catchment management, environmental systems and ecosystem services, and water resources engineering.
Teaching activities, field trips and assessments are also designed to give you:
• confidence in and understanding of overarching challenges associated with sustainability, cross-disciplinary communication, uncertainty, decision-making, and climate and anthropogenic changes; and
• transferable skills to help you perform in your chosen career, including academic and professional skills, critical thinking, written and oral communication, programming, time and workload management, problem-solving and teamwork.
You’ll also have the opportunity to present a research proposal in a poster session.
Hear from leading industry practitioners such as Dr Martin Griffiths, former Head of Water Quality at the Environment Agency, who was instrumental in preparing the Water Framework Directive.
Class activities include an innovative role playing game to highlight the complexity of natural resource planning and implementation.

Career prospects
Our MSc is aimed at those planning to become high-level practitioners in either the private or public sector and allows graduates to pursue academic, technical and policy/management career paths.
You may find roles in the UK or overseas in areas such as:
• Environmental management, environmental engineering and hydrological consulting roles in small, medium and large consultancies
• Young professional programmes in international development banks
• Environmental management and water management roles in water and sewerage management organisations such as Wessex Water, Severn Trent Water and Bristol Water
• Government sector roles including natural resource management, flood management and environmental management
• Environmental management in the resource and manufacturing sectors
• Doctoral studies at the University of Bristol or other prestigious institutions.

Entry requirements
A UK 2:1 honours degree (or international equivalent) in an engineering discipline or science. Other disciplines will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
