The WEEKLY MESSENGER

EAGLE LAKE CHURCH OF CHRIST

Volume 1, Number 22 August 30, 1981 Ernest S. Underwood, Edi tor

REFLECTIONS .... The gospel meeting in Hazel, Kentucky was truly a joy. There were

two baptisms, good attendance, and keen interest. Bill Dillon, the local preacher had done good work in advertizing the meeting. There were more than twenty-five preachers from as far away as Mt. Juliet, Tennessee who attended. This was extremely encouraging to me. I appreciate the eldership here in allowing me the time t6 go preach to others. However, it is always good to be back home.

My special thanks to brethren Bill Goldman and James Judd for speaking in my absence. I have received good reports of both presentations.

SICK ... At this writing Sandra Whitehead is sick and unable to be about.

Let's all remember all the sick in our daily prayers.

NOTICE ... NOTICE ... NOTICE ... If you have been involved in assisting Bible Call you need to read

STRENGTHENING THE HANDS OF THE EVILDOERS

During the deplorable condi tion:s of Judah's idolatry and utter disregard for God's law, Jeremiah wa$ sent by God as a prophet to cry out against these wicked people. His ~essage was that Judah was to be taken captive to Babylon, and that those wicked one's would die. In the midst of his prophecies he describ~s the false prophets of the day. In chapter twenty-three, and verse flourteen he stated "I have. .oe.e.n aL6o in the. pit~ ph~ o 6 J e.JtM alem an ho:JtJtible. thing : th~tj c.ommil adulie.Jttj, and walk. ,tn ue..o : the.y .otJte.ngthe.n aL6 o the. hand.6 o 6 e.vildo e.M , that none. doe.th Jte.tuJtn 61tom hi-6 wic.k.e.d~e..o.6: the.y Me. ail 06 them unto me. a.o Sodom, and the. inhabilant-6 the.Jte.Ot), a.o GomoJtJtah." It should be noted in this passage that the condemn, 1tion is against the prophets - those claiming to be spokesmen for God. A further study of the book of Jeremiah reve~ls that these prophets !were in the majority, and, they were popular with the people - a point which is certainly applicable today in the church of the Lord. /

Do we have those in the Lord's !church today who are strengthening the hands of the evildoers? If ~o, what are some of the ways this is being done? The answer to the fi~st question is an emphatic YES! Let us note some ways in which it is ~eing done.

. All of us who are informed sti~l remember the editorial endorsement given by Reuel Lemmons to Pat Bdone and Don Finto. This endorsement was given long after faithful brethren had recognized the apostasy of both these men. To our knowledg1 ~hat endorsement has neither been retr~c~ed, nor repented of. That 1editor has been, and still is guilty of giving strength to the enemi~s of Christ. He is also one of the major proponents of Chuck Lucas a~d the Crossroads heresy.

Not only is giving editorial e~dorsement to false teachers a means of strengthening their hands, byt giving them space in journals in w~ich to . exude their venom is a~other . method of aiding them. Many times articles by false teachers c1ppear in some of "our" papers without one word of rebuttal. Is such pr9per in the sight of God? . Another m~a~s of giving streng~h to the evildoers is that of appearing on and giving endorsement to ~heir multiplicity of workshops, seminars, and "how to" gatherings. ~Examples of this are Lynn Anderson, p .. .-eacher for the Fifth and Highlan church in Abilene, Texas, appearing at a growth workshop of the Metho ist Church. He did not appear there to rebuke them, but to teach them how to build up the Methodist Church. Even in the face of this, naive Brethren still send their dollars to the Fifth and Highland church to s~pport the long since apostate Herald Of Truth programs. Chuck Lucas' appearance last year on the program of the Kingsway Christian Church in Indianapolis is another case in point. He did not appear there to teach them the error of their system, but to teach them to grow and make progress in their error. Such was nothing short of strengthening their hands, and a direct violation of II John 9-11. Yet, some still defend him in his apostasy.

When we give the evildoers a platform from which to promote their false doctrines and/or to exert their influence upon unsuspecting brethren, are we not upholding and giving strength to that evildoer? When we give them a ready-made audience are we not guilty of the sin of biddi~g them_God-speed?_ For instance, in an upcoming lectureship in Memphis we find advertized many speakers who are sound in the faith, and about whom no doubt is raised. Brethren from all across the land will come to hear these good men as they attack the e:rrors of cultism. However, to this same lectureship has been invited a man who for years has not had a reputation for being sound in the faith. This man endorsed Pepperdine College even when insurmountable evidence showed that this school was in the zenith of its apostasy. He evidently also endorses the building of gymnasiums with the Lord's money, the using of such buildings to present secular movies: he has appeared on seminars ~it~ known apostates without one word of rebuke to such, yet, he is invited to the aforementioned lectureship. In spite of the fact that his unsoundness is a known fact among faithful brethren, he has been invited to have a platform from which to wield his influence, and this by a church which up to this time has always had a grand reputation of standing firmly for the truth. Does not such action strengthen the hands of the evildoer?

One further means of giving aid to the enemies of the cross of the blessed Lord is that of attacking those faithful brethren who stand firmly against all error. There are those in the Lord's church who stand ready to attack and defame anyone who has the courage to do what the Lord commanded in the first place. These generally do not know the truth, and if they do know it, they show by their actions that they have no true love for it. Such give aid to the devil's ministers.

Through Jeremiah God said that those who strengthened the hand of the evildoer were unto Him "a.o Sodom, and the. inhabilant-6 the.Jte.o 6 M GomoJtJtah." God forbid, brethren, that we should ever bow t·o pr~_ssures from the "somewhats" in the brotherhood which would place us in a position of giving aid and comfort to the enemies of the truth, and of betraying the confidence of faithful brethren who have in the past held high our hands. d -EJtne..ot S.
