Please remember that ALL GROUPS AND INDIVIDUALS using the Aldersgate facility must contact the church office and schedule their meetings, rehearsals and events on the Master Calendar.

Using the Master Calendar avoids conflicts and confusion and insures that your meeting or event is set up properly with the necessary equipment.

Our facility is in constant use both internally and by outside groups. What you see on the Sunday bulletin calendar is only a small portion of the events and activities that are occurring during the week.

In addition, it is VITALLY IMPORANT to remember to close and lock all doors and windows when you adjourn. Thank you for your help in keeping our property secure!

Grace and peace to you, family and friends of Aldersgate, and welcome to October! Our newly formed men’s group is currently reflecting on a book written for people who are either middle-aged or older, and/or people who have experienced the joys of gathering and succeeding in many ways. But now what? When I first read Halftime: Moving from Success to Significance by Bob Buford, I was just turning thirty, and although the book was fascinating and compelling, I didn’t necessarily feel the urgency to immediately apply the concepts to my life. I know that I am still young in the eyes of most of you reading this, but I am now in the second half of my life (unless I live past 98)... having just sent my first child off to college. While some of you might still be in your 20s or 30s, most of you are well into the second half, and questions of how to succeed start turning into questions and longings for significance. In Halftime, Bob Buford likens our lives to a football game, and says, “If the first half was a quest for success, the second half is a journey to significance.” “The first half of life has to do with getting and gaining, learning and earning… The second half is more risky because it has do with living beyond the immediate. It is about releasing the seed of creativity and

energy that has been implanted within us, watering and cultivating it so that we may be abundantly fruitful. It involves investing our gifts in service to others- and receiving the personal joy that comes as a result of that spending.” -Bob Buford “This is the true joy in life- the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one, the being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances, complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.” -George Bernard Shaw “I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I’ve got ahold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.” -George Bernard Shaw Shine! Yes, life is short, but it can still be powerful. Yes, life is but a moment, but it can still bring warmth and hope, and light the path for many. Yes, our youthful days come and go so quickly, but we can still bathe in a life of significance until the very day we

die. Shine! I still remember reading the words of Bob Buford and George Shaw almost twenty years ago, and feeling my heart stir. “Yes, significance is what I want”… and the older we get, our desire for significance grows from mere want to hopeful need. The Good News is that this is what Jesus came to give us. “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full!” -John 10:10. This is not a promise for success, but of significance. Please prayerfully read through this month’s Gatepost, and consider a new or long forgotten way that may help you live a life of significance this Fall and in your God-honoring years ahead. Please see below several highlighted ways to experience abundant life this month. “The game is won or lost in the second half, not the first. It’s possible to make some mistakes in the first half and still have time to recover.” -Bob Buford. May the Lord be gracious to you this month, and may you experience the “life that is truly life” (1 Timothy 6:17-19) in this life and in eternity. With much thanksgiving and expectant hope,

Rev. Ken

GriefShare meets on Sundays at 2:30pm in the Church Library. GriefShare is designed to help anyone experiencing grief or loss in their life. Whether the loss is through death or some other life loss—job, home, or anything that causes grief, Grief Share can help with coping with the tenderness of that loss. The group is open to anyone who can use help caring for their loss.

Special Session: “Surviving the Holidays During Grief” scheduled for Saturday, November 17 at 2:00 in the library. However long ago your loss may have occurred, this opportunity can give you insights on how to cope with your feelings. Contact the church office for more information, 714-544-3653.

BeFriender Ministers The BeFriender ministry of Aldersgate is a listening presence. This ministry is not a ministry of "doing", but of "being," - being present and listening quietly. At times, everyone can be on a difficult journey and needs a caring companion who will listen, empathize, and be a reminder of a caring, faith community. All requests and meetings are confidential. This ministry comes under the umbrella of the Care and Nurture team. If you are interested, or know of someone who might be, do not hesitate to contact the church office.

Prayer Shawl Ministry......meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month from 3pm to 5pm in the

Fireside Room. If you are interested in being part of this important and meaningful ministry, please feel free to

attend a meeting—even if you have no experience, there are knitters and crocheters willing to help those that are just

getting started. Please feel free to contact the church office if you have any questions or need further information

about the group.

If you need prayers for yourself, a family member or a friend,

you are invited to contact:

The Church Office

at (714) 544-3653.

All prayer requests are given to the pastors and office staff, who

pray together weekly. Members of the prayer chain pray

specifically for those who ask for prayers for themselves and/or

others. If you are interested in becoming a member of the

prayer chain, please contact the church office.

Let us support you in prayer!

Hello Everyone! Fall is off to a great start for our youth group! We kicked

things off with a wonderful youth and parent night attended by over 50 youth and parents who shared a meal together and got to know each other better. We went over the rest of the calendar year and shared some new ideas for the next calendar year. Thank you to Sue Conklin for your help in putting that evening together. Our youth and parents are incredible! The following week we went on a whale watch out of Newport Beach. The weather was beautiful, and it was a great day to be on the water, though we did not see any whales or dolphins. Next time for sure. The following week we served over 100 sack lunches to the homeless in Santa Ana. Thanks to Jeremy Davis, Sue Conklin, Leslie Anderson, and Gavin Wilmoth for helping us be the hands of Christ to our community. We ended the

month by watching the movie "Angst" together which is about teen anxiety and how parents and youth can help deal with it. We also started our confirmation class in September. Pastor Tim, Courtney Hunter, and I will be teaching the classes, and we are looking forward to helping these youth begin to claim their faith in God for themselves. We are going to have a great time together! We also re-started our Sunday morning Bible studies! We are really excited about being together on Sunday mornings, and spending time with the Word of God. We will be following Pastor Tim's sermon series on "Finding a Life While Making a Living." It's great to gather together in

our youth rooms again because it's such a sacred space! Thank you all so much for your constant love and support! Blessings, Scott Wilmoth Director of Youth Ministries

welcome table on the patio on Sunday

mornings?? You can’t miss it! There’s a big purple banner and a welcome table!! On the table you will find several things....

1. Sign in sheets!!!

All children preschool age - 5th grade need to sign in BEFORE Sunday school. Nursery will still sign-in in their room. I am trying to pre-populate the sign-in sheets with names, phone numbers and allergies so all you have to do is sign in and out. This procedure is truly just for the safety of your children. We are very lucky to have a campus where we all know each other but this is a needed element to insure the safety of all of our children. Please be sure to sign your child in and sign her/him out when you pick them up. Parents of 4th and 5th graders have the option of allowing their children to leave with out signing them out but we need to have a signed form on file saying the parent allows this procedure.

2. Youth info!! Please stop by the table to find

out the latest of youth happenings. Calendars and flyers of upcoming events can be found here!

3. A friendly face!!

Each week the table is staffed by a member of Family Ministries Committee. They are there to greet visitors and answer any questions!! Stop by and say hi!

You’ve probably heard of ohana from the Disney movie “Lilo & Stitch”. It’s a Hawaiian word meaning “family”

— and this includes: staying connected with extended family, honoring ancestors, and respecting the knowledge of elders. It also means “bound to each other” — in a good way. This year, Environmental Ministries is borrowing Hawaii’s ohana concept for our 2018 Fall Fest theme: “The Earth Is Our Ohana” — our family.

God’s creation bound people, animals, and plants together into one big family, all interconnected and reliant on each other (which is what ecology is all about). Protecting and caring for God’s creation = love for the whole world.

EM member Randy Sasaki, in his Creation Sunday message this year, told us the Hawaii State Motto:

“The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.” Caring for the “life” of God’s land — including the air we breathe and the water we drink — is the righteous thing to do.

Come join the fun as we celebrate “the family of Earth” at our Hawaiian Fall Fest booth (October 20). Children will get to string “wildflower seed” leis, make Hawaiian headdresses, and color native Hawaiian birds and sea creatures.

Adults will get the opportunity to voice their opinions via “climate postcards”, and can pick up informative handouts. And who knows? You might even get to sample some chocolate macadamia nuts! So please do drop by and visit us.

After all, we’re family — ohana! Sherri Miller, EM Big Kahuna

Aloha! Welcome to Environmental Ministries’

FALL FEST booth!

“REVIVAL: Faith as Wesley Lived It” sermon series. Sunday Services- Oct. 7, 14, 21, 28 @ 9am

We will reflect on the spiritual journey of John Wesley, and see how we might carry on the legacy of the Methodist movement, and experience revival once again in our own lives, in our church family, and in our community. This is a great series to invite friends who might be interested in knowing about the Christian faith and the origins of the Methodist movement.

UNCOMMON FELLOWSHIP GROUPS Go to aumctustin.org/small-groups, or call the church office, (714) 544-3653

Come experience an uncommon grace and hope as we gather to help one another put into play the ideas that spark in our huddles. We need others to walk with us and help us move from ideas to reality, and it

definitely helps when we are with others who have a spirit of grace, honesty, and encouragement. Take the step, and give a group a try this Oct.

SHAPE Discovery Class Sundays, Nov. 4 and 11, 10:30am or Thursdays, Nov. 8 and 15, 7pm

This is not an exercise class J, but a two-session class to help us reflect on how we can use our Spiritual gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality, and Experiences for a life of significance. This class is only open to the first 20 people to sign-up, because it will entail a follow-up planning session with one of our SHAPE facilitators. To sign up, email or call the church office.

A NEW SERVICE for NEW PEOPLE

If you are desiring to reach new people through a new worship service, and would like to join us in praying, planning, and implementing this new service, contact Pastor Ken, [email protected], or Pastor Tim, [email protected].

Manna Bags Remember that manna bags are available to distribute to those

who need assistance. You can pick them up in the Sanctuary or

by the Connection Center on Sunday mornings or in the church

office on weekdays during office hours.

In addition to sustenance, the bags also contain lists of other

places that offer assistance, including a flyer for Sunday Suppers!

These are great to keep in your car for the occasions that you are

out and about and may see someone that could benefit from a

bag of food.

Corazon Build on October 13 Submitted by Joyce Stenberg

On Saturday, October 13, one week before Fall Fest 2018, ten people from our church will be heading down to Tijuana, Mexico to build a house in partnership with Corazon (which means heart in Spanish).

Our church will be joined by volunteers from Abundant Life Korean UMC, Redondo Beach UMC, and University UMC, who also helped defray the $9,025 cost of the build. Faith UMC, who partnered with other churches to finance a build in October, will also be providing volunteers. The AUMC contribution for this project came from the Adult Mission Trip Fund ($1,000) and Mission and Outreach proceeds funded by your generous contributions to Fall Fest in 2017 ($2,775).

The house will be built in Cumbres, one of the larger sections of Tijuana. It will be given to the Marquez/Alvarez family: Ignacio, 42, who works in construction; his wife, Monica, 36, who is a homemaker; their daughter Shara, 19, who has a Jr. High education and is now in the work force; and Alexander, 10, who enjoys soccer and computers.

Our team has been asked to bring small housewarming gifts for the family, which could include small bath and kitchen supplies, canned or packaged food items, cleaning or hygiene supplies, and school supplies for Alexander. The volunteers will bring these supplies across the border in their own backpacks.

Please keep our team of 50 volunteers, from 5 churches, in your prayers that day, including the 10 volunteers from Aldersgate: Ken Suhr, Sunny Suhr, Braden Suhr, Josiah Suhr, Danielle

Murrieta, Mike Fergin, Stella Fergin, Jack Murrieta, Gary Stenberg, and Joyce Stenberg. Please also keep the Marquez/Alvarez family in your prayers as they transition into their new house.

Be sure to check the November Gatepost for an update about this exciting Corazon build, which is a meaningful way for our church to be the hands and feet of Christ in the world.

It’s October …Time to Get Our Fall Fest On!

Fall Fest is just a couple of short weeks away, and there is certainly a buzz of excitement in the air as we prepare to host our community at Aldersgate on October 20th. Soon you’ll see indicators of a festival in the making as signs and banners start to pop up throughout town. Fliers are available at the Connection Center for you to take and

share. And if you happen to be on Facebook and Instagram, it would be great if you could share Fall Fest posts with your friends on your social media pages to help us get the word out. If you’re a fan of The Fish 95.9, you might hear one of our promo-tional ads, which will air on October 13, 14 and 19. You’ll also find Fall Fest listed on the Events page of the Fish website. Also, Fall Fest will be a featured event in the Cowan Heights Living publication, which will hit mailboxes between October 6th and 12th. And because it really does take a village to make Fall Fest a success,

you’re invited to lend a hand. Vanessa Dulebohn is now actively recruiting volunteers to loan their tables and pop-up tents, help run Fun Zone booths, bake for the Cake Walk and Bake Sale, and assist with set-up and tear-down on the day of Fall Fest. So please swing by her table on the patio and sign up to help where you are able. Fall Fest Pumpkin sales have begun on the patio after service. There is also an order form insert in the ser-vice bulletin. They’re just $5 each and orders can be turned in through October 14th. After Fall Fest, simply take the pumpkins that you purchased home with you. Lastly, be sure to sign up for your chance to win it all and be dubbed the Cornhole Champion of Tustin! Look for the tournament sign-up sheet on the patio to secure a slot. Team Fall Fest would like to thank everyone for your prayers and support over these last few months. It’s been a wonderful experi-ence for us to create an event that is unique, welcoming and will be something all of us will enjoy sharing with our community. And now …let’s do this together!

Living in the Past can be fun, too! This was the theme when Ivan Bishop presented to our SOS gathering. Here are some highlights from Ivan’s history: • Currently, Ivan is on the Board of Directors for the Tustin Historical Society. • He is a docent at the Tustin museum at El Camino and Main. • Ivan makes video interviews of Tustin seniors. • He is the Commander of the local American Legion Post and enjoys helping veterans in need. • There will be a golf tournament in Tustin on October 18 to benefit the veterans. If interested, please see Ivan. Some of Ivan’s history includes: •Writing a book about his family and the Homestead Act. His uncle built a sod house back in 1917. There was no electricity, no plumbing, and the Great Depression was right around the corner. Ivan’s

family were farmers from Kansas and Oklahoma. •Ivan has a museum in his home. He has collected items from his teen years (thanks to his mother!) Ivan shared some rare and beautiful mementos from his family in the 20s and even earlier. •Ivan served in the Navy. He has given talks on naval history at the Tustin library. Tapes are available on YouTube. •Ivan enjoys writing poetry about the past. •He likes music from the 50s to 1968. That was the music of his

youth. He also enjoys movies from the 50s and 60s. •Ivan read at an early age. Lonesome Dove is his favorite book and he had the privilege of meeting the author, Larry McMurtry which was quite an experience. •Ivan also collects postage stamps. He hopes one of his grandsons will carry on this legacy. Twenty six people enjoyed hearing Ivan Bishop’s story. Please plan to join us on November 18th as we welcome Mary DeBos. 10:00 AM. Location TBD.

September The Church Council met on September 25th to take several important actions.

We discussed Christ’s call to be “fishers of people,” and a metaphor Pastor Tim shared to describe a way for us to enhance our fishing. Our church’s traditional worship service is like fishing on the shoreline—it remains important and relevant, but there are fewer fish along the shoreline today. Ultimately, we will need to get in the boat and go where the fish are (i.e., out the community). But we’re not ready for that yet. The step in-between is to start fishing from a pier. This means offering a new, second service. It’s still connected to the shoreline but may look and feel much different than the traditional service.

The Church Council supported a recommendation from the Trustees to rename the Fireside Room “The Hub,” and received an update on the renovation project, which is almost complete. The Hub will not only serve as a gathering place before and after worship, but also provide multi-purpose meeting space as in the past. A dedication of The Hub will be scheduled once the seating has arrived! The Church Council is not scheduled to meet again this calendar year unless there is an urgent need. However, the annual Charge Conference will be called in November. If you would like more information about the Church Council, who serves on it, or what we do, please contact Cathy Standiford, Church Council Chair, or one of the Pastors.

Sunday Supper – Community Outreach and Service Supported by proceeds from Fall Fest, your donations, and the loving labor of our volunteers. Providing a healthy meal and groceries to our community every week.

Happy 8th Anniversary! Eight years ago, October 17, 2010, AUMC

started serving Sunday Supper on the third Sunday of every month. Invited by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church to help expand the program, we stepped out in faith, praying we would find enough volunteers and resources to make it happen.

There were 28 volunteers and 35 guests that first Sunday. We now serve 80 – 100 guests with 35 working volunteers drawn from a roster of over 80 regulars.

Sunday Supper has grown into a community of caring and acceptance for our guests – some have been there all eight years. They count on more than food and groceries. They feel safe and loved. Thank you for being a light to our neighbors. If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday. Isaiah 58:10 Want to volunteer? Service

GREETERS We are seeking people to be greeters at the Welcome Center (rear parking lot) and at the west entrance to the patio. Welcoming everyone who comes to church is a most important ministry but what a return the greeters receive: smiles, compliments, a shared story, laughter. If you are comfortable with high fives or shaking hands or hugs or smiling and saying “I’m glad you’re here”, you are qualified to be a Greeter.

Please contact the church office if you would like to be a greeter, 714-544-3653.

Children’s Center Angel

We don’t know who you are, but we wish to express our

sincere thanks to the Children’s Center Angel who

regularly makes an anonymous donation to our precious children in the Children’s Center. Thank you for your love of children and our ministry. Aldersgate Children’s Center

Our heartfelt thanks and gratitude go out to you for the wonderful caring and

support we received during Richard’s illness and passing. Your prayers, your

cards, your hugs and expressions of sympathy touched us deeply. The delicious

meals delivered by the shepherds and their helpers were most welcome! Pastor Ken

and the staff’s guidance and support helped us so much during this sorrowful

time. And, Choir, your anthem, so beautifully sung, added a special touch to his

Celebration of Life Service!!

May God bless each and every one of you!
