Some thoughts of a Lost Catholic

“What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after

the one which is lost, until he finds it” Luke 15:4

The Lost, like nervous, defensive, African gazelle approaching a watering hole, walk into the church. Instantly, for the Lost, it can feel like there is this huge neon sign above our heads, saying, “Hi! My family and I are clueless Catholics and really have no place here. We couldn’t tell you the difference between a Hail Mary prayer and a “Hail Mary pass”.” Most of us are well aware that something in our lives isn’t right, but cannot quite put a finger on what is missing. As an effort to change our lives, we attempt to go to Mass. Our defensiveness regarding our spiritual state cause all of the negative stereotypes of “Catholics” and their “Church” to surface in our minds. From terrible parking, long, “boring” services to hypocritical, holier-than-thou snobs, these stereotypes begin to take root and grow. We become so keen to find any ex-cuse to validate our lifestyle, no matter what, that the smallest, perceived slight will have us running for the door. Once that hap-pens, we will be quick to spread the word about the “truth” of these so called, “faithful Catholics” and their “Church”. So what are the “faithful Catholics” supposed to do about it? Seems like it is a problem of the “Lost”, not the faithful. One of those “Can lead a horse to water…” situations, hmmm? You’re right. You cannot make them drink. However, you, by virtue of the sacrament of Baptism, as a beloved child of God, as a Roman Catholic, ARE called to be like Christ, the Good Shepherd. You are called to go out to where the “one” is and help lead them home. This isn’t a call for only the priests, deacons, greeters, etc., this call is for all who identify as “faithful Roman Catholics”. Without your help, the priests’, deacons, and greeters’ efforts can be interpreted as “fake”. For the Lost, it is easier to believe that being a “real” Catholic is unattainable. In our minds, it is unrealis-tic that church-going Christians can actually be Christians. The outside world says that the only way you might find an actual Christian is anywhere but a church. The outside world has built a considerable arsenal of evidence, real or imagined, against Chris-tians, Catholics in particular. The Lost are intelligent and under-standing but can be very unsure and untrusting, especially when it comes to matters of Faith. The simplest kindnesses can resound strongly in the minds of the Lost. For many of us, a simple, genuine smile, a real conversation, sprinkled with “Glad you came” and followed with “See you next week!” can go a long way. It can turn us from being nervous and defensive, to utterly relieved and optimistic. To go to where the lost sheep are could be as easy as inviting visitors to sit with you, giving those struggling parents an understanding smile, or even graciously letting them leave the parking lot ahead of you. You don’t always have to go a long way to find where the lost sheep are, sometimes they are right beside you. “…Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost” Luke 15:6

Yours, Amanda M. Pettiette

This day of reflection includes speakers, Mass, prayer, adoration, confessions, good food, , and fellowship. This includes continental breakfast, lunch & dinner. ATTENTION PARENTS! The Diocese of Colorado Springs asks all of us to be especially vigilant when it comes to protecting our children. Our children depend on us to protect them. Parents, we want you to know that we will do everything in our power to keep our children safe from harm. To do this, we need your cooperation. We see many unaccompanied children taking bathroom breaks during Mass. Please make sure an adult or teen sibling escorts your child. You are responsible for the drop-off and pick-up of your children. Parish staff cannot transport your children per the Bishop Charter. I want you to know that we require anyone who wishes to work with our children and teens, or to apply for any position, must take Foundational Training and submit to a criminal background check, and they must also be acquainted with the education staff for at least 6 months. The safety of our children is our prime concern. We need the entire parish to be on guard and keep St. Dominic a safe haven for our children.
