4

Sample preparation includes all steps from sample receipt until analyses are begun. The purpose of sample preparation is to ensure that the laboratory receives a uniformly sized sample representative of the whole. Sample preparation needs vary according to the project and the sample matrix. If you would like a specific sample preparation method, please let us know and we can tailor a package to your needs.

Submitting SamplesPlease ensure that all samples are labeled and that the submittal form is properly filled out. If you have any questions about the submittal form, please do not hesitate to ask. If the form is not filled out properly or is unclear, it can result in a delay before your samples can be analyzed.

The minimum information that we require before we can process your samples is:

• Your company name and/or contact name(s) • List or range of sample IDs • Analysis required and/or elements you are looking for • Results destination(s) • Invoice destination(s) • Sample Return / Disposal instructions

Rock & Drill Core

Soil & Sediment

Rocks and Drill Core PackagesRock and drill core samples are crushed to 70% passing 2mm, then a representative split is taken and pulverized to 85% passing 75micron. All of our Preparation methods are based on a sample of 5kg or less.

Preparation of drill core and rock samples require meticulous care to produce a homogeneous sub-sample for analysis. MS Analytical Services Quality System is as comprehensive in Sample Preparation as any other area of our business.

Soil and sediment samples are dried and then screened. The undersized (-) fraction is analyzed and the oversized (+) fraction is saved unless otherwise specified. This method is based on a sample of up to 500g. A surcharge will apply for samples in excess of 500g.

Other Individual Preparation Methods

DryingSamples must be thoroughly dry prior to sample preparation or analysis. All samples will be dried upon receiving for up to 24 hours at 60°C unless otherwise requested. Air drying is available upon request and is a useful technique for samples which may contain volatile species. Normal turnaround times are not guaranteed if samples are Excessively Wet.

CrushingChoosing the best option for crushing can depend on both the sample type and the mineral that hosts the element of interest within the matrix. A finer crush might be appropriate for heterogeneously distributed precious metals. Crushing codes are based on samples of 5kg or less. Crushing codes are based on up to 5kg of raw material. A surcharge will apply for samples in excess of 5kg.

SplittingSamples which have been crushed may require splitting to obtain an appropriate sample size for pulverization. MS Analytical Services offers standard riffle splitting for high-precision sub-sampling.

PulverizingCrushed material is pulverized to 75micron using ‘ring-and-puck’ style bowls of low chrome steel. Our routine sub-sample for geological samples is 250g.

PRECIOUS METALS

9

Page 12: MS Analytical Brochure 2016-Part 1

A measured amount of powdered sample is mixed with a combination of reagents including Sodium Carbonate, Sodium Borate, Litharge, Flour, Silica and Potassium nitrate. The mixture is heated to temperatures between 1000°C and 1100°C. The resulting lead button will contain all of the precious metals from the sample. The lead button is separated from the slag and cupelled at 950°C. The bead of precious metals which separates from the lead in this 2nd stage is then digested and analyzed by Atomic Absorption, ICP-ES or gravimetric method.

Metallic ScreeningWhen samples have or are suspected of having metallic grains present, it is preferable to analyze by metallic screening. 500g or 1kg of sample will be screened to

106micron. The entire plus (+) fraction is assayed, the minus (-) fraction is assayed in duplicate using Fire Assay techniques and finished with gravimetric and instrumental

techniques. Both the (+) and the (-) fractions are used in the determination of gold in the entire sample. Other screen sizes are available upon request.

Aqua Regia Digestion

Aqua Regia uses a 3:1 mixture of hydrochloric and nitric acids which act as an oxidizing agent to dissolve most oxide, sulfide and carbonate minerals and is an excellent trace level exploration tool. This digestion will yield semi-quantitative results as some of the more resistant minerals including silicates are only partially dissolved.

16

MULTI-ELEMENT PACKAGESMS Analytical offers a range of multi-element packages; each method presents a distinctive advantage for different sample matrices, target commodity and detection limits required. The staff at MS Analytical can help you select a method that fits your program needs, both technically and economically.
