Dear Dhyanabandhus,

The Gayatri mantra is one of the oldest and most powerful of Sanskrit mantras It

is believed that by chanting the Gayatri mantra and firmly establishing it in the

mind, if you carry on your life and do the work that is ordained for you, your life

will be full of happiness.

The performance of Gayatri mantra opens the gateway for knowledge and it is the

raised intellectual level that enables a person to reach heights. The reciting of

Gayatri mantra washes away the sins and provides the individuals with the

intelligence to indulge in good deeds. It helps a great deal in purifying the mind,

body and soul. You tend to feel relaxed after performing it and also your mind

stops wandering, thereby leading to better concentration.

The beautiful and soothing ancient sounds, the flowing rhythmic patterns, and the

powerful intent make the Gayatri Mantra a wonderful part of one's daily spiritual

practice. Because it is an earnest and heartfelt appeal to the Supreme Being for

enlightenment, it can be universally applied. It really doesn't matter what your

religion, your colour or your ethnicity is – what matters is your intent, and your

authenticity, and your willingness to be moved.

May Gayatri, the Blessed Mother of Vedas, bestow on us right understanding, pure

intellect, right conduct and right thinking!

Q 1 : What is Sankalpa Yoga ?

Ans 1: “Sankalpa” means a strong

determination. To reach this through

“Yoga” is Sankalpa Yoga. Since ancient

times, this has been practiced by the

rishis of Himayalayan parampara.

Slowly, the Hatha Yogis started using it

and later on Aghoris for getting Siddhis

(mystical powers). You can see many

Aghoris in North India who have got this

kind of Siddhis. But these powers can

take you away from spirituality. That is

why it is said that the “Sankalpa Shakthi”

– will power should be used in a Satvik

way. Even in Bhagavadgeethe there is a

reference to this. In today's negative

world, use this Sankalpa Yoga to bring

positivity for peace and harmony in man

kind.

Q2: :“Chitta Vrtti Nirodah” – What is

the correct meaning of this ?

Ans 2: Maharshi Patanjali has explained

t h e d e f i n i t i o n o f Yo g a i n a

comprehensive manner in this sloka.

When the thoughts of the mind are

completely

avoided, the

e m p t i n e s s

occupies the

mind which

is nothing

but “chitta

vritti nirodah”. There is absolutely no

thought in this state. We can only

explain such a state of mind and how to

reach it ? Adi Sankaracharya has said

that one in a lakh seeker would become a

Yogi.

Very rarely you find such a person and

even if you find, you cannot get

anything from them. Do you know the

reason ? Our minds are not empty to

receive anything from a Sadguru. Only

when we absolutely surrender

ourselves and submit to them in

meditation we can get it. What is

absolute surrender ? It is again difficult

to explain which cannot be related to

day to day life. Any experience of

ananda is possible to only such of those

who have complete submission and it is

a Divine experience of Love.

Poojya Guruji Answers your Questions

August 2013

Q3. Who is a equanimous person ?

How to become one ?

Ans 3: One who is always aware about

his real SELF is an Equanimous person.

He is always in this state of mind and

there is no one belonging to him. He

comes alone and leaves alone. I am not

this body, mind and intellect but I am

Sat Cit Ananda, and the one who has this

awareness eternally is a Sthitha pragna

(Equanimous person).

Q 4: What is the difference between

sports activities and Yoga ?

Ans 4: Sports activities relate to

physical body. There is always a desire

to win and it creates certain tamasik

qualities also like revenge, repentence,

anger etc. Mind also encourages such

emotions where as in Yoga is Satvik in

which the mind is kept under control.

Yoga is based on the “antah karana” and

spreads only Love. Hence there is a sea

of difference between Yoga and other

sports activities.

Q5: It is said “Sajjanara sangha

hejjenu savidanthe” (The company

of noble people is like tasting honey).

Who are these noble persons ?

Ans 5: The one who conducts “Satsang”

with great joy and interest is a Sajjana.

Sajjana need not be a Satvik person.

The persons who have understood the

TRUTH that God exist in every being

and who LOVE everyone in their

speech, action always. Never leave

Satsang and there will be spiritual

progress.

Q 6: How should live happily ?

Ans 6: A contented life is the gate way

of Love. If you do not have satisfaction,

even if you are wealthy you can not be

happy. If you accept life with

contentment, a dry bread would also

satisfy you as much as a delicious food.

Q 7 : W h a t i s “ Va r a i g y a ” –

renunciation ? Is it getting rid of

everything and becoming a sanyasi ?

If so how do I suppress my desire ?

To progress in meditation, should I

become a Sanyasi ?

Ans 7: Merely by wearing a “Kashaaya

vastra” saffron dress, one would not

become a Sanyasi. The mind should first

accept Sanyas with love and he is a real

Yogi. Even a householder can renounce

material things of life by renouncing

the desire to possess them. Mere

external renunciation would not be

useful unless you give up the desire to

have it. In this whole world, nothing

August 2013

belongs to me and everything god

given. I am a traveler for the time being

and has come here to live joyfully till I

leave. As long as I am here, I live

happily making others happy and joyful.

This is spirituality and understand that

a person can live joyfully only with true

renunciation as above. One should learn

these things only by experience and live

happily.

Q8: If we sit on meditation for the

whole day, is it not a waste of time ?

Ans 8: What is the ultimate goal ? Is it

meditation ?A healthy state of mind?

The first purpose of meditation is to

attain a healthy state of mind. This

gives peace to everybody. Hence

Meditation is not selfishness.

Q9: Where is mind ? Please explain.

Ans 9: It is present in every cell of the

body. Wherever you experience a

thing, there is mind. Mind experiences

everything and the mind is in the whole

body.

Q 10: What is the true reflection of

ones consciousness?

Ans 10: The character of a person is

the true reflection of his consciousness.

By self study and practice one can keep

this mirror clean.

Q 11: What are your expectations

from your disciples ?

Ans 11: In this Ashram all are disciples

only. There is no separate person called

“Guru” and it is only a symbolic name.

In spirituality, there should not be any

expectation as it leads to a desire and

consequent disappointment. We have to

take things as it is.

Q 12: Whether fasting complements

meditation ?

Ans 12: Fasting can be of many

varieties. As per Yogashastras, you can

eat half stomach and fill up the rest with

water/air. If the purpose is to meditate,

better reduce the quantity of food.

Once you get used to remain half empty,

slowly you can fast fully and meditate. It

increases the Dhee Shakthi – will power

of the mind. Before fasting, one should

know the body constitution and take

proper guidance from an expert Guru.

Q13: Belief is very much required in

the path. Is it so ?

Ans 13: Yes. There is no stronger

weapon than “BELIEF”. Even the

modern science cannot measure and

discover the strength of belief.- Yogacharya

Good News for Dhayabandhus

August 2013

There was a cowherd boy who took his cows to the meadows every morning and

brought them back to the cowshed at the end of the day. One evening, as he was tying

the cows up for the night, the boy found that one of them was missing her rope. He

feared that she might run away, but it was too late to go and buy a new rope. The boy

didn't know what to do, so he went to a wise man who lived nearby and sought his

advice. The wise man told the boy to pretend to tie the cow, and make sure that the

cow saw him doing it. The boy did as the wise man suggested and pretended to tie the

cow. The next morning the boy discovered that the cow had remained still

throughout the night. He untied all the cows as usual, and they all went outside. He

was about to go to the meadows when he noticed that the cow with the missing rope

was still in the cowshed. She was standing on the same spot where she had been all

night. He tried to coax her to join the herd, but she wouldn't budge. The boy was

perplexed. He went back to the wise man who said, "The cow still thinks she is tied

up. Go back and pretend to untie her." The boy did as he was told, and the cow

happily left the cowshed. This is what the guru does with the ego of the disciple. The

guru helps untie that which was never there. Like the cow, due to our ignorance, we

believe that we are bound by the ego when, in fact, we are completely free. We need to

be convinced of this, however.- Collections from Mata Amritanandamayi

Meditation is a only sure antidote.

There meditation-no concentrating on

ant thing material, or anything of the

world such as external objects

candlelight, ocean waves, sunrises or

birdsongs; verbal mantras or mental

affirmations or visualizations-brings

our attention that to our Source within.

It is a natural process of connecting our

self with the Divine within. Other

methods are not subtle enough to hold

our attention to escort us within.

Our mind is so subtle that only

something even more subtle can capture

and hold our attention, to guide our

energy back within. This is a true

spiritual meditation process, which has

been practilized in exactly the same

manner by all great souls since time

immemorial, to achieve the goal of

eternal inner peace, contentment and

enlightenment.

Only that which is spiritual can saturate

our Being. It is merging with the Holy

Spirit. Those who know how to do this

should serve humanity and help the

living Master brings peace on Earth by

spreading this method, lighting up

others so that they too can peacefully

shine.

Meditation also means living in balance

with the material world, embracing it and

using it to facilitate our life on Earth and

making it more comfortable while not

letting it become the be-all and end-all of

our existence. This way we can live with

higher understanding of our purpose so

be less stressed by what we lack-due to the

commercialization of our life existence-

but more trusting in the abundance and

prosperity God is granting us by using

our commonsense, our creativity, our

talents, our gifts and our skills.

This means, knowing that deep within the

core of our being there is this beautiful

existence that wants to shine and merge

with its source. This means knowing that

there is more than enough for every one

and plenty to go around. This means

spreading goodwill, so that love,

compassion, kindness, generosity and

peace will reign with in us and on Earth.

But only if we know how to earn it and

where to spend it…because we are our

intention.

Puzzle World

“If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales.

If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.”

August 2013

A certain spiritual aspirant went to a

sage and asked him to give him a

mantra. The sage said that he would

impart the message only if the disciple

agreed to serve him for twelve years,

carrying out all his injunctions. The

disciple agreed and carried out his

services to the preceptor with devotion

for twelve years. At the end of the

period, when the sage felt that his own

end was approaching, he asked the

disciple to bring a palmyra leaf on

which he would inscribe the mantra

before his death. The disciple went in

search of a palmyra leaf, but before he

could return, the preceptor died. On

enquiry from a boy who was there, he

learnt that before dying, the sage had

written something on a bed of sand,

which a woman had copied and then

wiped off the inscription. The disciple

went in search of the woman, who was

having some donkeys. He learnt from

her that she had inscribed on the palm

leaf roll that she wore in her ear-lobe

what she found on the sand. When she

learnt from the young man that the

writing on the sand was a mantra

intended for him and for which he had

served the sage faithfully for twelve

years, the woman said that she would

give him the palm leaf only if he served

her dutifully for twelve years. The

disciple who was determined to get the

mantra at any cost, agreed to serve her.

The young man looked after the

donkeys and served the woman for

many years, living upon the food given

by her. One day, he could not get the

food from her and went about in search

of food. At that time, he learnt that the

king of the region had been feeding the

poor for a long time and that he might

be able to get food if he went to the

feeding place. On going there he learnt

that the king had stopped the feeding

from that day because it did not yield the

result he was expecting from it. The

king had started poor feeding on the

advice of his preceptor who had told

him that he would have a son if a truly

godly man ate the food that he would

serve to the poor. A bell was kept in the

palace and when it rang by itself, that

would be the sign that a godly man had

partaken of the king's food. As the

feeding had gone on for long without

the bell ringing, the king decided to stop

the feeding.

Perseverance

August 2013

That was the very day when the young

disciple went to the feeding place. On

learning that all the vessels used for

cooking the food had been sent to the

river for cleaning, the young man

hastened to the river bank to find out

whether some food scraped from the

vessels would be available for him. He

found some crumbs at the spot and

started eating them. At that very

moment the bell in the palace started

ringing.

The king was startled to hear the bell

and immediately sent out messengers

to find out who was the person who had

eaten the food that day which made the

bell ring. After enquiries, the

messengers traced the young man at

the river and brought him to the king.

The king was overjoyed on seeing the

young man because he felt that he

would soon have a son. He offered the

young man half his kingdom and

invited him to stay with him. The

young man told the king his whole

story and said that he was not

interested in the kingdom or anything

else, but only in the mantra from his

guru, which was now in the keeping of

the woman with the donkeys. The

young man insisted that the palm leaf

ear-ring worn by the woman should be

obtained without any compulsions.

The king sent out men to trace the

woman, who was brought before him.

Learning that she was an acrobat, who

could perform feats on a rope, the king

asked her to demonstrate her skill

before the queen who was now enceinte.

As she was dancing on the rope, he

asked her whether she could catch two

diamond ear-rings he would throw at

her and wear them while dancing on the

rope. She readily agreed. Catching

them in her hands, she took out the

palm leaf rings from her ear-lobes, cast

them down and wore the diamond ear-

rings in their place.

As the palm leaf rings dropped down,

the young man rushed towards them

and eagerly read the message inscribed

there in. Immediately after reading the

mantra the young man secured instant

illumination and liberation thereafter.

A spiritual aspirant should have such

determination and preparedness for

any kind of sacrifice to achieve his goal.

Stress is a disease of the 21st Century.

It axes years from your life. Stress

affects work output, causing failure

and unhappiness. We need to develop

inter nal protect ion from the

challenges of life.

You attribute your stress to an

external agency. You believe your

mother-in-law, boss or the weather

causes your stress. Vedanta says that

nothing in the world has the power to

disturb you except yourself. You may

eliminate the mother-in-law, change

your job, re-locate to another country;

your unrest will remain the same.

Stress is an internal phenomenon.

Hence the solution lies within.

Just as mammals developed the

capacity to maintain the same body

temperature in all weather conditions,

human beings have the ability of

keeping the mind calm in turbulent

circumstances by ‘attitude control’.

Make an assessment of the world in

which you live. Evaluate your

immediate family members, colleagues

and friends, their strengths and

weaknesses. Then their faults will

amuse and not irritate you.

Vedanta says samam, serenity, is the

key to success, happiness and growth.

Sports persons have noticed that the

combination of dynamic action

performed in an inner environment of

tranquillity makes for success. Who

wins depends more on the state of

mind than on physical prowess. There

are three states of mind. When the

mind is calm but there is no motivation

to work and no action, it is the lowest

state of tamas, apathy. When activity

begins but discontent is the motive it is

the intermediate state of rajas,

passion. Vedanta speaks of the

superlative state of sattva, purity,

where the mind is calm, intellect sharp

and actions brilliant.

What disturbs the mind? Negativity

and desire. Tackle these internal

causes and the mind remains serene

even if a storm rages outside. The

mind takes easily to negativity. The

intellect helps withdraw the mind

from negative channels and think

positively.

Bhagwad Gita Krishna describes

desire as enemy using four words–

panthin, vairin, nitya vairin and shatru.

Yet you encourage and increase desire!

Unbridled desire causes havoc. When

fulfilled it leads to greed. Achieve still

more and you get deluded with success.

You envy those who have more than

you and are arrogant towards those

who have less. When desire is blocked

your thoughts get deflected towards

the obstruction as anger.

Uncontrol led des ire prevents

enjoyment. A calm mind is necessary

to enjoy the good things of life. Desire

comes in the way of meaningful

relationships as you take the stand –

My way or the highway!

Unrestrained desire results in failure.

T h e m i n d m e a n d e r s t o t h e

unproductive avenues of past worry

and future anxiety. This may have

caused the early dismissal of Roger

Federer from the Wimbledon! The

mind focuses on what you do not have

and gets attached to what you have,

causing tremendous mental agitation

and suffering.

Rise above desire and enjoy the object

of desire. Desire is the greatest obstacle

to obtaining the object of desire. Crave

for a thing and it will elude your grasp.

Let go, it will come to you. There are

three ways of handling desire. Desire

management gives relief. Desire

reduction gives comfort and desire

elimination brings bliss. Scan your

desire with the intellect.

Fix a higher goal. As your mind is

engaged in the higher pursuit, lower

desires drop. Work dedicatedly,

wholeheartedly & detached. Every

action becomes perfect. You attain

extraordinary success. You find

happiness in the action itself. And you

grow spiritually.

“Self-introspection leads to the

realisation of the goal. From

contentment in its perfection,

one acquires superlative felicity”.

Ramakrishna Paramahamsa had

several disciples in his ashram. The

disciples used to go to Calcutta every

day to purchase several articles of

food, flowers, clothing and other

requirements. They had to cross a

river in a ferry.

One day it was the turn of

Brahmananda to go to Calcutta. He

got into the ferry and stood silently in

a corner. There were several people in

the ferry. One individual who had

nothing but contempt for Sannyasis

said: "Look at that fellow, how strong

and sturdy he is, but of what avail? He

does not do any work, just eat and

sleep; There are quite a lot like him in

that ashram. It is the fault of that guru

who is corrupting the youth". Many

people exclaimed: "True! True! They

too will be good for nothing people". It

pained and hurt Brahmananda. "What

do they know about our master" he

thought. He silently bore the insult.

He was shy by nature and could never

retort, nor retaliate.

In the evening he returned to the

a s h ra m w i t h t h e p u r c h a s e s .

Ramakrishna would every day

question them in detail about their

experiences, only to know how they

conduct themselves in the world

outside. He asked Brahmananda:

"Well, what happened today?"

Brahmananda frankly described the

entire event. Ramakrishna was angry.

He shouted: "What! You kept quiet

w h e n yo u r g u r u w a s b e i n g

scandalized! You should have replied

to them in the proper way. There is no

place for people like you in the

ashram".

Vivekananda was listening all the

w h i l e t o t h e n a r r a t i o n o f

Brahmananda and also the warning of

the Master. The next day it was

Vivekananda's turn to go to Calcutta,

got into the ferry and was carefully

scanning the faces of people there.

The same gentleman who spoke

insultingly about Ramakrishna the

previous day said, pointing out

Vivekananda. "Here is yet another

fellow, a parasite. They all worship

that illiterate brahmin priest. What

fools these young men are !"

Vivekananda approached that

individual and raising right hand high

said: "If you say just another word

against our master, I shall throw you

into the river, take care!" The ferry

man got scared. He advised the man

not to prolong his talk. He also

whispered into his ear: "That fellow

would certainly do what he says. It will

be trouble for all of us".

Vivekananda was called to his master's

presence that night. Ramakrishna

asked: "Well what is the news?"

Vivekananda narrated the incident

with great excitement. "What!" cried

out Ramakrishna. You wear the robe

of a sannyasi but do not conduct

yourself as one. How dare you lose

your temper like that? There is no

place for people like you in the ashram!"

Vivekananda fell at the feet of his

master and said, "O Master! Did you

not chide Brahmananda for not having

retorted yesterday? Why are you

angry, when I have done my duty

as a devout disciple? Please enlighten

me". Ramakrishna patted him on his

back and said: "My dear son, that

advice was meant for people like

Brahmananda, very timid and shy. He

ought to be more spirited. And as for

you, you have too much of it in you.

You have to be tamed and calmed. It is

the duty of every guru to give advice

to his disciples according to their

nature and temperament. I am not at

all angry either with you or with

Brahmananda."

“If faith in ourselves had been

more extensively taught and

practiced, I am sure a very

large portion of the evils and

miseries that we have

would have vanished”.

- CollectionsMusic has a close connection with

spirituality. Spiritual music has the

capacity to enlighten our minds and

inspires us to dive deep within. The

most profound spirituality involves

peace and silence. But to enter this

realm of peace and silence it is quite

practical to take the benefit of spiritual,

soulful music.

Music that helps us spiritually is music

that e levates and upl i f ts our

consciousness. It is music that makes

rather than breaks. Some music

embodies a restless, aggressive quality.

Spiritual music energies our inner

being, but it does this without creating

restlessness and vital excitement.

Spiritual music can be a great aid to

meditation. If we listen to music with

our heart it awakens the inner

aspiration to dwell in the higher realms

of consciousness.

"Music is the mediator between the

spiritual and the sensual life. Although the

spirit be not master of that which it

creates through music, yet it is blessed in

this creation, which, like every creation of

art, is mightier than the artist.”

A popular form of spiritual music is

bhajans. Bhajans are simple devotional

songs, which are sung many times to

invoke a quality of God , The Supreme.

Many spiritual teachers have noted the

power of devotional music to help

seekers spiritually. To sit in silent

meditation may be difficult for many

seekers, but to enter into the spirit of

devotional music is to get the fruits of

meditation in an easy and accessible

way. For some aspirants devotional

music alone is a way to reach the goal.

The great Indian Saint Sri Chaitanya

sung endlessly devotional bhajans to Sri

Krishna. His infectious singing,

inspired many in India to follow the

path of Bhakti yoga. His bhajans to

Krishna are still sung today.

Spirituality and music can never be

separated. If music awakens our inner

aspiration we will be inspired to dive

deep within. Sri Chinmoy says of music:

"When we play soulful music, we elevate

our consciousness most rapidly.

"Power of Music"

August 2013

Soulful music is a form of aspiration, a form of meditation.”

From the outer music we will become in touch with the inner silence. In our

deepest meditation great seekers say that we can hear the divine music in the

depths of our own heart.

Music also has the capacity to bring people together. It is something that unites

rather than divides. Speaking at the legendary Woodstock festival of 1969 the

spiritual Guru Swami Satchidananda offered a welcoming address to nearly half a

million spectators.

"I am overwhelmed with joy to see the youth of America gathered here in the name

of the fine art of music. In fact through music we can work wonders"

Many who attended Woodstock of 1969 felt it was a unique occasion when so

many people were attracted by the ideal of harmony and friendship that

transcended any cultural or racial barrier. Oneness and harmony is an

indispensable part of spirituality, music helps this to become a reality.

Richard became interested in meditation and spirituality whilst studying at
