Miami Lakes K-8 Center PTA Bi-Annual Scholastic Book Fair Huge Success!!!

Pictured below—Chick-Fil-A Cow and book

M iami Lakes K-8 opened their bi-annual Scholastic “All You Can Read” Book Fair Diner

the weeks of April 12 through April 19, 2010. Ibis Mendoza, the Media Special-ist transformed the Media Center into a neighborhood diner. The students were greeted by Rock Around The Clock music and mesmerized by a trip back in time to Happy Days.

The Chick-Fil-A Cow made a special visit to the book fair and found a great book that he couldn’t wait to start reading. Many of our neighborhood restaurants sponsored the event and donated gift certificates to students to support literacy.

Your Administrative

Team

O n Friday, April 23rd Miami Lakes K-8 Center music

students performed their Spring Concert at Hialeah

Miami Lakes Senior High. Music instructors Mrs. Cino,

Mrs. Sherman, and Mr. Carpenter showcased their gui-

tar, orchestra, piano, and chorus students. There was a

beautiful mix of music from J.S. Bach’s Prelude in C, to

The Beatles Yellow Submarine, to Michael Jackson’s Beat

It. The students were also very well-behaved which

allowed the program to run smoothly.

The concert began with angelic voices of the Elementary

Chorus. Orchestra 1 students performed a classical piece

that demonstrated beautiful control of the bow. Another

Orchestra 1 class performed an exciting arrangement of

In the Hall of the Mountain King that kept the audience

on the edge of their chairs and wanting more. The ad-

vanced Orchestra showed their excellence in both Classi-

cal and Classic Rock. The guitar classes showed their

knowledge of rhythm, lead, and soloing on both acoustic

and electric guitars. Piano students exhibited maturity

when performing solos and duets on the grand piano.

For the past four years our music program has been grow-

ing in number and talent. On this night, we had over 150

students performing and helping backstage. According to

Mrs. Cino, “This was our best concert ever.” Mrs. Calvo

wrote, “The talent demonstrated by our students is only

brought out through excellent teaching, thorough plan-

ning and hours of hard work. The kids were extremely

well-prepared and their behavior was outstanding.”

We would like to thank the Miami Lakes Civic Associa-

tion for their $2,000 contribution to the MLK-8 Music De-

partment.

In the words of Chelsea Smith, “Encore! Encore! Encore!”

SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL AUTHORS’ GALLERY

O ver 2,000 Miami Lakes K-8 Center student authored/illustrated books were on display at our

by as the adults read their work. The special area departments published more than 500 original stu-

dent books in addition to the homerooms. These were proudly displayed as well. Middle school stu-

O n Tuesday, May 18th our seventh and eighth

graders were able to be part of an exclusive presentation

by author Christina Diaz Gonzalez. Mrs. Gonzalez,

debut book, “The Red Umbrella” is about the moving

tale of a 14-year old girl's journey from Cuba to Amer-

ica as part of Operation Pedro Pan—an organized exo-

dus of more than 14,000 unaccompanied children,

whose parents sent them away to escape Fidel Castro's

revolution. The presentation was centered on Mrs. Gonzalez’s road to

becoming an author; she gave an overview of the novel, and allowed our

students an opportunity to ask questions. We are thankful to Mrs. Gon-

zalez, for bringing this very real part of American and Cuban history to

our school.

Miami Lakes K-8 PTA Häagen-Dazs Fund Raiser

T he PTA Häagen-Dazs

Fund Raiser was a

success when, on Tuesday,

May 11th staff and parents

were hard at work behind

the counter serving ice

cream to the Miami Lakes

K-8 Center students and

families. The continued

commitment of the staff, families, and the PTA is inspiration.

Everyone had a wonderful time!

Fairchild Challenge

T he Science Club, under the direction of Mr.

Bonet, planted an amazing butterfly garden.

The garden impressed the Fairchild Garden

Education Outreach Coordinator along with our

students knowledge level. It was rewarding to see the

students faces light up with excitement as the judge

was complimenting them on the garden and their passion

for the environment.

The success of our garden is a true reflection of the in-

credible collaboration we have at our school between ad-

ministrators, teachers, students, parents, and community

members.
