The Lab: Make me ThinkI took this term literally, but used it upon myself in order to ‘make me think’, rather than to make somebody else think. I produced a room, full of an-ything and eveything that in-spires me, from photogarphy, illustrations, to posters and books, this room had it all.I covered everything includ-ing the sofa, it was really over-whelming but looked amaz-ing.None of this images were du-plicated so no matter where your eyes were taken some-thing new was found.

Page 4: EGRD2011+EGRD2012 2B Rosy Bailey

Prince LauderI have majorly fallen in love with this mexican illustrator, he used mixed media to create his fashion inspired drawings. His real name Carlos Guerrero, doesn’t seem have hit the wave of attantion he will soon achieve, as there was bearly anything about him on the internet and his website is lacking any detail. But thanks to the ‘Make me Think’ project week I have found someone I love!

Page 5: EGRD2011+EGRD2012 2B Rosy Bailey

The Lab: Make me ThinkContinued...When it comes to referancing I am forever finding myself making a metal note of an il-lustrator or designer but never having a place to store them, which usually leads to me for-getting. so I used this oppor-tunity to change this, in order for me to become more organ-ised in my third year.Along with my own work, Lauders work and dozens of others I have produced a refer-ence book with all the images from my ‘room of inspiraion’ inside, with details such as name, website, and notes in-side which is something I can definatly use in the future and also add to.

Page 6: EGRD2011+EGRD2012 2B Rosy Bailey

The Lab: Make me ThinkAlong with my reference book, photography is also something I have never given myself the opportunity to produce. I have always found photography facinating but always find my-self cutting corners. My plan was to produce some photographs and explore dif-ferent ways in developing and achieving photographs I had produced entirely from start to finish.

These nagatives are of photo-graphs taken from a Daian F+ lomography camera on 120 film, as you can see, this has become a realisation project, as I am realy quite awful at producing the perfect photo-graph!

Page 7: EGRD2011+EGRD2012 2B Rosy Bailey

Here I have experimented with the final image on my film, as you can see it was cut short, so I have exposed the back of the photographic paper in or-der for the nagative image to penetrate and give the effect of a refleted image on the cor-rect side.

This is the first photograph I took through the development process in the dark room.above are the test strips which are 2 seconds of exposure apart, and each section al-tered with the amount of light exposure, which enabled me to find the perfect shot. although, my photography skills didn’t help the matter.

Page 8: EGRD2011+EGRD2012 2B Rosy Bailey

Again this is another experi-ment in which I have overlaid an image onto another by us-ing the same piece of film but exposing it onto another im-age.

I have also tried to reflect this image, so that the ‘R’ was vei-wed the corrct way round, al-though it isn’t as clear as i’d hoped.

Page 9: EGRD2011+EGRD2012 2B Rosy Bailey

SolarizationThis effect is applied in the chemical darkroom which par-tially inverts the tonal range so that the images which are produced look partly nagative and positive. This is created by exposing an image under white light when it is only partly developed.

This is a very tricky experi-ment to try and to get the tim-ings correct is unblievbly hard. as you can see I had three at-tempts and all are very differ-ent. I love this effect, and to be able to create something like this using only chemicals and no computer manipulation is eye opening!

Reverting to TypeThis exhibition was available to veiw on the 10th-24th December 2010 and 4th-22nd Janu-rary 2011. The exhibition holds work from progressive typographic designers from around the world, with an array of inspiring techniques and centuries-old craft, which has been reinvented for modern day usage. The Standpoint Gallery venue is based on 45 Caronet Street, London, N1 6HD

Three Exhibitioms-Print Club LondonThe exhibition holds work created by amature screenprinters, which is produced by the workshops run by Print Club London. Screen printing sessions are available to anybody; which has really inspired me to go and take a look. The prints produced in the workshops are available for purchase from the gallery itself or online from thier online store - www.printclublondon.com.

The Brick Lane GalleryBeyond The Looking Glass an “Art in Mind” Exhibition featuring a mix of urban, graphic and contemporary artists, which was veiwed to the public between the 5th and 17th Janu-ary 2011. (196 Brick Lane, E1 6SA). ‘Art in Mind’ is an ongoing exhibition which give artist from in or outside the UK, from all artistic backgrounds. All exhibits can be purchased withing the gallery or their website, www.thebricklanegallery.com.

Anissa LeeThese paper cuts were at Beyond The Looking Glass Exhibition at The Brick Lane Gallery. I love this techinique, Anissa has produced these designs so pricisely that I wasnt aware they were paper cuts until i got up really close. I love the referances to Alice In Wonderland and the contrast between the coloured papers.

My Interpretation I was really inspired by Anissa’s cut out designs, especially the fact she doesn’t use any kind of stencil method, she just cuts free hand from her mind. Its actually alot harder than it looks, on several attempts i cut the wrong area and the whole thing fell apart!I really enjoyed doing these, its quite therapeutic.

Page 12: EGRD2011+EGRD2012 2B Rosy Bailey

Fashion IllustrationThis section is full of the vari-ous illustration I have drawn and the inspiration that got me there through out this se-mester. I have used a range of tech-niques to get a sense of my own peronal style and which works best for me. I started my illustraions by firstly looking at the A/W London fashion week col-lections which was held in mid February this year, I then went on to create some ob-servational drawings, which I felt had more character than those I had drawn from still images.

Page 13: EGRD2011+EGRD2012 2B Rosy Bailey

Paul CostelloThese dresses are all from the line up of paul costelloes range at the A/W 2011 London Fashion week show show, the key peices I personally liked the most, I love the hair style also, it gives a playful feel to the vey structured and elegant dresses.I have used inks as a dash of colour to my line drawings, I loave how you can see the natural fall of the ink and how the colours have mixed together.

Henry HollandHenry Holland has alwaysbeen one of my favourite fashion designers, all of his clothes have a quirky feel, which is something he got spot on in his collections. What works best for me in all of these illustrations are the imperections, im not one to produce an accurate detailed drawing, I feel those have no character, i like something to stand out, the colours Holland used in his designs were very vibrant which is all the more exciteing to draw.

Page 14: EGRD2011+EGRD2012 2B Rosy Bailey

Rachel De Ste. Croix

Im a little sceptical about Ra-chels illustrations, I am not re-ally a fan of computer manipula-tion, I tend to like thing to look a little edgey, I do love her tech-nique of line drawing, which she does first, before putting the into photoshop and ‘working her magic‘ as she states in an inter-view in Amelias compendium of fashion illustration book.

Rachels working method con-sists of sketches based on photo-graphs, traced and coloured dig-itally using textured brushes in photoshop and then using scraps of fabrics creating bult up lay-ered effect. She believe her work is quite indevidual, although I’m sure I’ve read this technique and tried it many times myself.

Precious Little is her website name, and the name she goes by commercially, she says her name is ‘hard for people to pronounce and alsobecuase I like the im-plied meaning - something small but treasured; something valued and valueless.

Rachel has a part time job run-ning along her freelance career of a fashion illustrator and she goes on to state ‘Don’t do this if you don’t love it, because it will never make you rich... unless you are very, very lucky’, moti-vational words. Thankyou.

These drawings were inspired by that of Rachel, the burst of colour is something I neeed to get off my chest, illustrating children from observation and combin-ing it with a some playful colour works really well. what I love most is that i’ce caught them in motion, but havent picked up any facial emotion, but the colouring reflects what the child is feel-ing.

Page 15: EGRD2011+EGRD2012 2B Rosy Bailey

Gemma MillyI can really relate to Gemma, she started off in advertising before finding her feet in illus-tration, and I too have really found my footsteps and style amongst fashion illustraion. I found Gemma in the publi-cation, Amilias Compendium of Fashion Illustraion, a book I purchased at the Pick Me Up exhibition this year in the Summerset House in London. I love her work and its inspired me immensely. The book goes on to interview each fash-ion illustrator, which most of them explain how they make different effects with an array of mediums. With this in mind i want to ex-plore the different effects I can get as I tend to always go back to line drawing.

In Gemmas interview in the fasion illustraion book she makes a very firm quote which I have lived my life by for many years, ‘Fashion runs so much deeper than just aes-thetic. We use it as a form of self-expression, it can alter our mood and shape out iden-tity, and this aspect is exactly what i love to capture in my illustrations’ She also goes on to say ‘ without fashion, our lives would be much less col-ourful’.

Subtracting the ModelBeing a model myself I have always thought there was far too much emphisis upon them, especially a catwalk model that has to go through multiple castings and to look stick thin.I wanted to take this away from the clothes, as afterall this is what the models are there for, this range of illustrations com-puter manipulated from the orginals to give this effect.

Page 16: EGRD2011+EGRD2012 2B Rosy Bailey

‘I can’t stop thinking about myself’This illustraion was used in the won-derworld edition for Monki Magazine, in which she illustrated the clothes and accessories from their spring/ summer collection 2011.

‘Girl with Big Hair’Anellie illustrated as a graduation prod-ject, a series name “I love all my girls” which contains 13 fictive characters at the Beckmans College of Design.

Annelie Carlstrom

Whilst wandering through the Pick Me Up exhibition in Som-erset House Annelie’s carefully handrawn illustrations caught my eye from across the room, so much so I skipped a few design-ers work in order to get there.

I love how detailed they are, and peculier to look at with the not quite so well proportioned fea-tures. The hair inspired me most, I have on many occasions tried to get this effect and ended up giving up on the idea, so I’m en-vious of the Swedish illustrators obidience and egerness to fulfill her design. I also admire her use of shading, it really makes the image come alive.

In some of her later work I found on her blogspot she uses alot more color and vibrancy in her workm although I am a fan of the black on white background dipicted in most of my illustra-tions. However I do really like the dashes of lipstick pinks and bows.

Carlstrum uses a 0.3 propelling pencil to make these detailed il-lustraions which seem to be a mix of naturalism and naivity.

Page 17: EGRD2011+EGRD2012 2B Rosy Bailey

My InterpretationWhat caught my eye within Anellies work was the attention to detail she has put in the hair, details such as shading has never been one of my strong points but something I could work on within my own illustrations, I took this inspira-tion and tweeked it into my own style.

Childrens FashionThese observational illustrations show the attention to detail within the hair, just like Annellie, but I have used my own style of drawing to achieve them.

Page 18: EGRD2011+EGRD2012 2B Rosy Bailey

Here I have Taken A different approach on my drawings.

Page 19: EGRD2011+EGRD2012 2B Rosy Bailey

Subtracting the model continuedGoing back to taking the em-phisis away from the model I created these two videos, in which the model isn’t vis-able, the first was a mock up attempt but stears away from my illustrative style, therefore I produced another. The way the garments are in motion without a body is re-ally interesting.

Nude LaceWelcome to the Boudoir of vin-tage desires, where anything is possible. Victoriania is upon us, replicated throughintricate fabrics and lace detail-ing. Creamy vanilla and apricot influenced pastels are born to recreate this potent era through a sense of delicacy and poise.

Collaborative WorkWhen I was given the oportuni-ty to collaborate I couldn’t have been more excited. Fiona Smith, a third year Fashion Manage-ment and Marketing student from UCA, approached me to create some collaborative works for her final major project.

Her brief was to produce an underwear range for larger cup sized womans bras, my partici-pation in this brief was to create the bras using Adobe Illustator, edit the prints, colours and com-bine them with the product. I was to take into account that larger bras have much wider straps and the cups are usually a different shape, in all the structure and support of the bra is much more robust and took alot of editing.

Vintage FloralSpring/summer ‘12’ has an nostalgic essence to this trend, which is represented through a rustic colour palette and a selection of vintage florals & ruffles. High-waisted shaping and silk fabrics are highlight-ed to start this summer with a 70‘s vibe.

Externalisation I am really happy with the fi-anl outcomes, especially that it will become externaised in Fionas final show and in her portfolio that she’ll show to clients and companies. This isn’t something I would have done myself, though I have gained some skills through practising, which I can progress in my future works.

WorkShops:LetterpressDottie, my mum. Mothers day is coming up and due to my lack of funds, what better way to express my love than a hand made card using my new found skill of letter press. After a few bad prints and re-adjustments in the leading.,using the farley press I managed to get some good ones. I wasnt aware of how hard it would be to adjust the amount of pres-sure on the letters, ensuring not to break the wooden typeface.

BookbindingI learnt various bookbinding skills within this day tutorial.

Pick Me Up ExhibitionI always find this exhibition inspiring, mainly because they are all up and cming design-ers, and soon to be people i will be competting against.

I’ve realised that the work I like to look at, is complettely different to that which I createfrom left to right are Pual Blow, his hand-drawn work has a very strong narrative el-ement, all of which are very humerous and im sure many people can relate to them, Victo Ngaii creates her work using a very traditional meth-od of woodblock prinitng, i love the bowl cut print, there is so must emotion also in the rhino, and lastly Yoh Nagao, his inspiration comes from hip hop and graffiti influences, his mixed media collages are cre-ated with acrylics pencils and other sourced imagery.

Iggesund Exhibition - The Black Box ProjectThis idea came from the term tinking outside of the box, as designers this is always a boundry which is pushed to it limits, but this world breif was given to many design companies such as Landor and Van Heertum Design to think inside the box.

LandorMy Favourite of all was Landors submission. Their idea was a pixel, their video explains that our world is made up of 72 pixels, and by producing a pixel within a box, everything is inside, no?www.iggesund.com/main.aspx?ID=6B285C7B-B6CD-421C-89EF-05881005C7D1

A Breath of Fresh Air...

At Henderson Global Investors you have the

opportunity to work alongside professionals

in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

Our Idea..To have a pack of playing cards that incorporates Henderson’s into the pack, containing pho-tographs of the company on the back of the cards, with the corporate identity theme running throughout - using blue rather than black. Our intention is to photograph certain aspects of the company building as an opportunity to ad-vertise . We feel this method of approach is most likely to entice degree graduates from a range of background whilst subliminary embedding Henderson’s into the consumers mind.

The corporate guildlines were something I found very enjoyable, this is an area i will come across frequently in employment, but something I hadn’t yet dealt with as a sudent. Areas Sarah Berry and I were to take into account were the colours, and that the logo was to only be situated on a white background with no text within certain amount of centimetres away from it.

HendersonsAs a team of two our breif was to create a medium to high end paper based direct mail campaign aimed at 18-24 year old students from a range of backgrounds to ad-vertise Henderson’s Gradu-ate programme for 2012.We were to take such things as, paper stocks, grammage and ink coverage into con-sideration when producing the packaging in order to keep within the medium to high range specifiactions. We produced a prototype of our direct mail piece which slots together without using any adhiesives which saves costs and allows the company to redirect these saved funds into ink coats.

Page 27: EGRD2011+EGRD2012 2B Rosy Bailey

Final Boards and submissionAs part of our submission a client meeting was arranged, and as a group we were to present 4 boards which included our idea and a future developement idea. This was an amazing experience which has helped me develope my communication skills and I now know what is to be expected in the future. Our final boards were submitted into the competition.

The FutureOur future idea was to produce a YouTube account, in which Hendersons can upload videos, or blogs from student within the programme already. There’s already a small inter-est virally regarding Hender-son’s: Total number of views upon searching Youtube = 143. Without substance this opportu-nity for publicity will be wasted, Henderson’s needs to show in-terest in social networking.Being able to advertise your work in film opens up an array of opportunities, combined with a mainstream social medium such as Youtube which is used glob-ally, Henderson’s can broaden their audience.

Page 28: EGRD2011+EGRD2012 2B Rosy Bailey

Aphorism:Curiosity Killed The CatAs a group consisting of: Jack young, James Maritn, Aimee Pope, Abby Scott and myself, we were to find an aphorism and produce a motion graphic of no more than 30 seconds. We chose ‘Curiosty killed the cat‘, a very well known phrase, although once sketching our ide-as, we came to the conclusion to stear clear from the cliche. Our video is a box, that builds up suspense and curiosty by bouncing around the walls and opening very slightly, it then fin-ishes with a sucking motion as if the audience is captured by the box.

Page 29: EGRD2011+EGRD2012 2B Rosy Bailey

Household BriefOur task was to engage a group of people to build something, the limitations of this brief were that the design had to be flat packed and 2D, however the final product once built could become 3D. Sarah Berry and I chose to design a flat packed house net, in which our target audience, students, could design their future dream home, away from their studnet or shared houses.

Page 30: EGRD2011+EGRD2012 2B Rosy Bailey

Martin O’NielThis was a large group project and team cooperartion was es-sential in this brief we began to collectively bring items in and around UCA which were of no use to finally create huge letter forms, which created the phrase, ‘Cinderella is a hyper-crytical, soul searching, autis-tic, model slave’.

Day BriefsAs a year group we were giv-en a fantastic opportunity to work alongside some amazing designers, to get an insight to the big world that awaits us af-ter university. All of which gave us some very helpful information and great presentaions about their work and how they got there. As follows are the works I cre-ated in the workshops they set up.

Page 31: EGRD2011+EGRD2012 2B Rosy Bailey

The GirlsFrom each of our day briefs with designers, this was definatley my favorite. Our brief was to represent ourselves, so my idea was to create a way of doing this for memoral moments in our lives. which included: sleepovers, teenage years, prom, uni and then also went on to do future scenes such as wedding and even funeral.

My group which included Sarah Berry,Moe Hezwani and I, brainstormed how and where could achieve this a settled with using TKMAXX, which has everything, from clothes to picture frames, and was in walking distance from university, as we were pushed for time this was a perfect location. With a lot of presuasion the manager aloud us to use the fitting rooms to create our scenes. It was lots of fun to do, and brought back tonnes of memories.

Page 32: EGRD2011+EGRD2012 2B Rosy Bailey

Making DoThis brief involved changing the Making Do publication, in which ever way we want-ed. To begin with there was no real perpose to what I wanted to achieve, So I decided to change the book in a way that would appeal to children. I changed a page into a word search, using words from the text on the page, also a puzzle, by cutting on a page into puzzle shapes and also a paperplane page, which gives instructions on how to make it.

AbjectThis group project had us explaining a word (Abject) without saying or showing it in a 30 second video. Without ever hearing the word a dictionary and theasorus came in very handy, which is how we came about or plan. To create a stop motion video, expressing all of the words that mean, or share the same meaning as “Abject“.

Page 33: EGRD2011+EGRD2012 2B Rosy Bailey

Publication/Presentation/Dissemination.With Niel Drabble working as a critic, curator alongside us was very motivating, I wanted to present my work in a way which would inspire him. I scattered my photographs up the stairs and over the studio, which reflected that ‘in-spiration is everywhere’. By placing them on the stairs people eyes were already look-ing towards them. Niel was really intrigued by what I had created and gave me some really helpful feedback.

Manifestly Manifest a Man-ifesto.To aspire to inspire before you expire. This is something I have al-ways lived my life by, with-out being inspired the world would be a very dull place.I have used a Diana F+ lomog-raphy camera to achieve these photographs, the reasons for this is that lomography pho-tos have a very iconic look to them and I have achieved ex-actly what I wanted.

EvlautionThis semester has brought with it so many changes in my attitude to work. I have found myself becoming increasingly more confident and as a result of this, produced some amaz-ing work.During the first half of this semes-ter I found myself getting lost in my work, creating a bubble inwhich I wouldn’t move for hours, and be-came quite obsessive about my illus-trations.

My independent practice has re-ally come along, after an exsessive amount of experimenting I feel I have gained a sense of my own style, although, this is something I wish to carry on developing and achieving as styles and my outlook on every-thing changes so frquently. My independant practice illustra-tions are yet to be completed, I love to illustrate and this is something I wish to never end, therefore they will never be finished.

After the day brief with The Girls I came to the realisation that once the course finishes, my ability to produce what ever I wish becomes very slim, as I will soon have to produce what clients or my company wants and I have become aware that this course is coming to an end very quickly as this year seems to have flown by, so I have become increasingly more at-tentive to lectures, talks and tutori-als in order to gain as much as I can from this course.

I’ve had practice in producing a live brief on two occasions this semester one being the Hendersons breif and the other, a collaberation with a third year student, Fiona Smith. This gave me an extremely large confidence boost as she was so happy with the work | produced. This sence of externalising my work gave me an insight into how others portray what I have created. This is

also something I gained within the manifesto brief in which Niel Drab-ble was our critic curator. Most of the Gallerys or art spaces I have viewed have always been very smilar in the sense that all of the work is on walls, inside frames. Although Niel taught us that this isn’t the case, and how our work is placed for others to see can be as creative as the art piece it-self. As I began to walk around our studio to see others work I found myself talking to people I woudln’t usual-ly, somebody out of my networking group that has a completely different style of working, which enabled my to clarify whether my intensions of my work had been successful.

This and the other day briefs I found great, they were a short burst of fresh air and somthing I needed, to have external practioners which gave us some feedback which wasn’t some-body I was used to hearing from was great.

I was unsucessful in finsing a wrokplacement over the easter break, however I was given some re-ally positive feed back from, Gem-ma Milly, a fashion illustrator, “I could see a lot of potential in your self-initiated & observational work in particular. You should definitely continue to push your drawing skills as I think you could really develop a lovely style there”.

Over the summer I look forward in developing my photography and il-lustrations. I also wish to find a work placement towards the end of the holliday in order to get me focused and ready for the year.

This year has got my in the right mind set for the final year. I am much more confident and focused on achieving my goals and making the most out of this opportnity.
