Issue 19 Spring Term Friday 13th February 2015 Dear parents and carers Mrs Josee Williams 1959-2015 It is with much sadness that I inform you about the death of Mrs Josee Williams. Mrs Williams died last Friday and we are slowly coming to terms with the loss. Mrs Williams, Josee, worked for us from 2005 as a Student Manager on both Cambridge and Bury campuses. She was a loyal and dedicated member of our staff. She was taken ill last week and spent the last days of her life in intensive care. Her family are in shock and our thoughts and sympathies must be with them. She had struggled bravely with her asthma but was looking forward to making plans for her rerement. It is a me for sadness, but also to give thanks for her life and dedicaon to our school and our community. Her funeral is taking place on Thursday 19th February and the school will be represented. Sadly we also learnt this week of the murder of a student from Year 11 (2014). Kevin Wilson was shot in Toxteth, Liverpool on Saturday evening; the Police are describing this as ‘targeted’. We are shocked and saddened to learn of Kevin’s unmely death. He was a member of our school community who enjoyed the loyalty of his friends. He didn’t always find school easy and made unfortunate choices that led to considerable difficulty. Our thoughts go to his father and his family at this painful me. School concludes for half-term on Friday 13th February and we resume on Monday 23rd February 2015. I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents of our expectaons regarding uniform. We are seeing an increase in students bringing phones and electronic equipment to school. There is no need for these items in school and our policy is that they will be confiscated if they are seen in school. Please support the school by reminding your child of this policy. Earlier this term I spoke with the children about the proposals to improve the sports facilies at Cambridge Campus. We are commied to providing young people with the best quality educaon possible and you may know, from our Ofsted inspecon in 2014, that they recognised our passion for making sure that all students achieve their best. One of the areas we wish to develop is compeve and recreaonal sport. We believe that fit and healthy young people are more likely to make posive lifestyle choices and in an area of disadvantage and challenge, that is really important. We have been working in partnership with Enfield Council and Powerleague to develop a new sports facility at our Cambridge Campus. Powerleague are a naonal leisure facility constructor and operator. They are planning to invest in the construcon and running of the proposed sports facilies. These facilies- that include all-weather sports pitches and a new mul sports hall (for badminton, football, basketball and so on) will be ulised by the school within our curriculum during the day and then be available for public use during evenings, weekends and holidays. We are very excited about this possibility and our students are thrilled at the opportunity this development offers. This partnership approach will allow the school to have sports facilies that are beyond the scope of the public purse. I enclose a copy of the plans that are currently at the Council Planning stage. I am sure that you have quesons about this opportunity. We have tried to answer some of these below but would also like to invite you to come to an exhibion of the plans in the Cambridge Campus Hall on Tuesday 24th February 2015 from 5.30-6.30pm where I and a representave from the Council and Powerleague will be available to answer your quesons and receive any feedback.

Dear parents and carers

Mrs Josette Williams 1959-2015

It is with much sadness that I inform you about the death of Mrs Josette Williams. Mrs Williams died last Friday and we are slowly coming to terms with the loss. Mrs Williams, Josette, worked for us from 2005 as a Student Manager on both Cambridge and Bury campuses. She was a loyal and dedicated member of our staff. Earlier this term I spoke with the children about the proposals to improve the sports facilities at Cambridge Campus. We are committed to providing young people with the best quality education possible and you may know, from our Ofsted inspection in 2014, that they recognised our passion for making sure that all students achieve their best. One of the areas we wish to develop is competitive and recreational sport. We believe that fit and healthy young people are more likely to make positive lifestyle choices and in an area of disadvantage and challenge, that is really important. We have been working in partnership with Enfield Council and Powerleague to develop a new sports facility at our Cambridge Campus. Powerleague are a national leisure facility constructor and operator. They are planning to invest in the construction and running of the proposed sports facilities. These facilities- that include all-weather sports pitches and a new multi sports hall (for badminton, football, basketball and so on) will be utilised by the school within our curriculum during the day and then be available for public use during evenings, weekends and holidays. We are very excited about this possibility and our students are thrilled at the opportunity this development offers. This partnership approach will allow the school to have sports facilities that are beyond the scope of the public purse. I enclose a copy of the plans that are currently at the Council Planning stage. I am sure that you have questions about this opportunity. We have tried to answer some of these below but would also like to invite you to come to an exhibition of the plans in the Cambridge Campus Hall on Tuesday 24th February 2015 from 5.30-6.30pm where I and a representative from the Council and Powerleague will be available to answer your questions and receive any feedback.

Questions and Answers Why is the school working with a commercial partner? Put simply, these sort of facilities are very expensive and outside of the scope of the Council to fund, in a time of austerity. ECS wants the very best for the students and therefore has worked with a partner to bring about the kind of development we think students deserve. When will the construction work start and end? We are hoping that the construction work will begin in May and be finished in readiness for the new school year in September 2015. What are the hours of operation? The school will have sole use of the facilities until 5.30pm. Powerleague will make the facilities available for hire from 5:30pm until 10:30pm during term time and 9:00am until 10.30pm during school holidays, weekends and bank holidays. Where will people park? Powerleague are upgrading our car parking facilities so that we make better use of the space and visitors will park on the school campus. What about if there’s an event on at the school? Powerleague are upgrading other parts of the school so that we can accommodate visitors when we have parents’ evenings and so on. How many people can use the facilities at any one time? In theory there could be a maximum of 126 people using the facilities in a 1 hour period. The reality is that the early evening and late evening times would not operate at this peak capacity. Is the facility free to use? The facilities will be free to the school during the day and people will book the facilities and pay for their use at other times. The traffic on the A10 is very busy. What has been done to address this? Transport for London have conducted a detailed assessment of the facilities in the area and have judged that the effect on traffic will be minimal. Who will pay for the development? This project is entirely funded by Powerleague How will the facilities be lit? The pitches will be lit by a modern dark sky compliant lighting head. This is mounted horizontally throwing light downwards. How will the lighting affect residents? The lighting model submitted as part of the Planning Application shows that light levels drop to that of street lights within 10 – 12m of the pitch boundary. We hope that the community will support this development to provide ‘state-of-the art’ facilities to the school and local people. Best wishes for the half-term.

Lost Property Several items of lost property have been handed into the school offices of both campuses: *outdoor coats *school blazers *bags with shoes/trainers *umbrellas *glasses If your son/daughter has lost anything since September, please ask them to check their classrooms or ask at the school office to identify and reclaim their lost item. It would assist us greatly to return items handed in to the school office if items were marked with students’ name. Thanking you for your co-operation.

Parents’ GCSE Study Support Evening Wednesday 25th February on Cambridge Campus between 6pm and 7pm.

As the summer exam season comes closer, the school is putting in place a number of different forms of support for students. As part of this process we are holding a Parents’ GCSE Support Evening on Wednesday 25th February on the Cambridge Campus between 6pm and 7pm. The evening will consist of an introduction, explaining how student revision will be organised in school prior to the exams, followed by a series of workshops organised by our lead teachers. These workshops will focus on how students can be supported with their revision at home; in addition attendees will receive a revision technique guide and a free USB flash drive containing digital resources to aid revision at home. Many of the parents who attended this event last year commented on how useful both the evening and the resources provided were for them and their child. It is important for all parents of Year 11 students to attend so we can work together in supporting them with exam preparation both in and out of school. We look forward to seeing you on the evening.

PROPOSED BUILDING PLAN FOR CAMBRIDGE CAMPUS

Thursday 5th February Year 10 visit to St Peter’s College, Oxford University

Nine of our Year 10 students had the opportunity to visit St Peter’s College to see what life at University is like, the subjects you can study there, and how to get in. We had some of the myths dispelled and found Oxford is not all about being posh or rich or a genius! After having a tour round the college and lunch in the refectory (very Harry Potter-ish), we listened to two presentations by PhD students about Computer Science. The day was very informative and it was good to be able to talk to current students about their studies and all the extra-curricular events they get involved with. Monday 9th February Careers in Science Morning Edmonton County were pleased to be able to host a morning of workshops run by Kingston University about careers in Science. We were joined by students from Lea Valley and Enfield County Schools. After an introductory session, students took part in three different workshops – one about Forensics, one about Sports Science and one about Engineering. The sessions were great fun, interactive and informative, and the students enjoyed the activities as the photos show.

Aladdin and Cinderella Pantomimes! Well done to the Year 9 GCSE Drama group on their first live performance of Aladdin and well done to the Year 7 & 8 Drama Club on their excellent performance of Cinderella. Both groups performed on Monday 9th February to the Primary Phase with great success! For Year 9 it was a performance assessment and the students have come a long way in developing their acting skills; watching back this performance will be a great way to evaluate their achievements so far. I was incredibly proud that the students managed to stage their pantomimes despite lots of nerves they were feeling! Drama club have dedicated lots of time after school and at lunchtimes on the lead up to the show and they have been a pleasure to work with! Some great talent was showcased, the performance was thoroughly enjoyed! A great big Thank You to Primary Teachers for agreeing to be an audience for us, we really appreciate the experience and opportunity! The Primary Phase were the perfect audience even calling out some appropriate ‘Boo’s’ and ‘It’s behind You’s’! Thank you to my marvellous support from Miss Casilda and Miss Mitchell, Sophie Tytler, Emily Lane and Cansu Yilmez, we could not have done it without your help!

Well done to all performers!

Sixth Form visit to Newnham College, Cambridge – Tuesday 3rd February 2015

Nine students from Cambridge Sixth Form went to Newnham College, Cambridge to spend a day experiencing university life. Students were given a tour of the college, campus and the facilities; a talk on finance, personal statements and amongst other things, what the university looks for in its applicants. Rochelle Burey, Sinem Colak, Eve Davis, Irem Torun, Kathreena Gokool, Hiraane Dos Santos, Shannon Kearns, Salima Kiliya and Gul Hayirli were the lucky students invited to attend. Salima said - “ I found the trip to Cambridge University very enlightening. I felt like I had learned a lot about the University and had fun whilst doing so. I now have a better understanding of what I would like to study and where I would apply.” Eve said - “I count myself very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to visit Cambridge. The day provided a great insight into what life at the university is like and I have clearer prospects for the future. The snow just added to the beauty of the day ! Shannon said – “The trip to Cambridge showed me that if you work as hard as you can and get the right results - anyone can apply ! We toured the different colleges and were told about the kind of teaching on offer and how different it is to other universities. Students get one to one tutorial sessions and individual advice -it’s an amazing place!” All in all it was a great day and the experience has given them inspiration and renewed enthusiasm to do well in their studies. Here are some pictures of the students in the beautiful grounds at Newnham College.
