NORTHERN CALIFORNIA OK, as predicted last time, lots of new bands (or older bands we nev- er heard of) popping up . In SF, SOL- DIER OF FORTUNE have a 12" EP out. Garage band, MOHAWKS, emerged, and the HAPPY FLOWERS are sticking their ugly faces through the dirt again. CODE OF HONOR/SICK PLEASURE album due out soon, and then C of H takes off on a national tour . Still out on tour is MDC-Dave called and they're doing real well-their album is being repressed now . DKs back from the rest of America, Biafra loaded with lots of great tapes and records to play on the radio. East Bay newies are TWO MINUTE HATE, from Concord, and SCREAM (not the D .C . band), from Alameda . INTEN- SIFIED CHAOS to put out record soon, as well as a DEADLY REIGN EP. The South Bay scene grows with EXECUTIONER, GRIM REALITY, and RESISTORS . KILLJOY broke up . WHIP- PING BOY back from their tour . Santa Cruz's RYOT (great band) is changing name to REDRUM (?) . YOUNG ALCOHOLICS checking into AA . San Jose's RIBSY is recording „too. The Valley, or Val, has new addi- tions : YOUNG PIONEERS, POOR WHITE TRASH, and AUTHORITIES (new EP on the way from them) . Up north, PUBLIC DENIAL hails from Napa, and from the 'real' N . California (as they put it) comes Arcata's AGENT 86. There's been a lot of gigs this summer - no Elite Club shows, but BLACK FLAG, DOA, MINOR THREAT, etc. came through, and played both the On Broadway and small venues like the Tool & Die, "behind the Victoria Theatre," etc . Also great gigs at Clubfoot . Most of the local bands played at the Wednesday night Max RnR gigs . (Discontinued after Labor Day due to school reopening and dam- age and scamming at the shows-it is 'real cool' to scam into a show where you see 5 bands for $2) . Lots of out-of-town bands played those gigs too, like BATTALION OF SAINTS, YOUTH BRIGADE, REJECTORS, SOCIAL DISTORTION, CRUCIAL TRUTH, GOV'T IS- SUE, SCREAM . We will do em occas- sionally throughout the year. Also, Eastern Front happened (see review) . The Max RnR compilation re- cord release party degenerated from a 48 hour bash to 3 separate nights. OK, but no special event . Nice of the DKs to take the same cut as all the other bands, allowing most of them to make more than they ever did at a gig . Oh yeah, the compilation Will be out by the time you read this - only 2 months late - thanks Faulty. Hey, keep us informed of your band's plans for records, tours, or even your existence . We couldn't believe getting MinorThreat and MDC on one night . CapitolPunishment played a good set thatnight . Cambodian Kids got a littletoo drunk to play . MDC's Dave is agreat lead singer . Everyone sangalong to "Born to Die" & "John Waynewas a Nazi ." People around here havebeen very curious about the D .C.scene, so Minor Threat was well re-ceived . There was lots of agitated, intense slamming for both MDC andMinor Threat.

Several of the local bands will gointo the studio in late August tomake a Fresno cassette compilationand possibly a 45.

Washington: SeattleThe biggest event for Seattle

hardcore was the July 4th show withBLACK FLAG, the SUBHUMANS and SAC-CHARINE TRUST . It was practicallythe only event . A few weeks earlierDOA played here and in mid AugustSOCIAL DISTORTION and YOUTH BRIGADEvisited from LA . FEAR was supposedto come but were unable to find aplace to play (hall owners weretrembling in fear). This summer has been bleak for

hardcore with virtually no place toplay and no promoters interested inthe "marketability of hardcore ."Over a dozen halls have been closeddue to alcohol related problems andundue police harrassment (Seattlepunks are much less than even a mi-nor threat) . If the people don'twreck the hall, then the police willhaul up and wreck the show . The onlyway a local band gets to play is ifit either opens up for an out-of-town band or sets up and promotesits own show . The bands are the oneswho usually end up getting burned,so there isn't much motivation tobabysit Seattle's rebelious youth. As for what is happening :

theFARTZ, probably the best known localhc band, play really great fastthrash with ever-important lyrics.Last year they released a 7" "Be-cause This Fuckin' World Stinks ."They are soon to release a 12""World Full of Hate" on AlternativeTentacles . In addition they have acassette entitled "Live To An Audi-ence of One" (which includes onlysongs that are not available on any

of their other recordings) . It Isavailable for $3 .50 from the FARTZ,3915 SW Lander, Seattle, WA 98116.Also on Fartz Wreckerdz are the

REJECTORS.

From the suburb of Bellevue comesMrEPP, one of the most extreme bandsI've ever heard (with intelligentlyrics) . They have a 7" ep ("OfCourse I'm Happy, Why?" on PravdaRecords, PO Box 9609, Seattle WA98109 at $2 .50 pp) but they are alot noisier and louder (= better)live. Also on "The Public Doesn't Exist"

are the LIMP RICHERDS . They havelots of droning feedback with no (ormore than one) recognizable beatprovided by even more percussionthan the now-defunct Seattle nuwavedance comoo, the BEAT PAGODAS . Com-bine this with humorous, meaningfullyrics to form a landscape of auralintrigue.THE ACCUSED's 19 song cassette is

out and is highly recommended by"-rna (Young Punks) Doherty, Steve(Chicago Offender), Duff and Wilum(Punk Lust) Pugmyr (I haven't heardit yet) . It's only a buck and two202 stamps so come on : Write to theACCUSED, 42151 E . St ., HWY 525,Clinton, WA 98236.Other local hc bands include EX-

TREME HATE and HOBO SKANK . Unfortu-nately neither has played Seattlesince the May closure of the StrandHotel.

The party/punks bands (bands thatreally don't have a lot to say butplay loud, less aggressive music'with a good beat') in Seattle in-clude the FASTBACKS (who have a 12"5 song ep on no 3's records), theLIVING, and the SILLY KILLERS.What I really want to know is what

happened to the RUFUZORS, a reallygreat HM/punk band? Mike, Ward, andTommy ex of the FARTZ were backingJoe Despair until he got married andsplit to NY .

Craig JoyceThe Attack

California: Los Angeles"Summer Slam", Olympic Auditorium,

Sunday, August 15 . With Lost Cause,Aggression . Shattered Faith, CircleOne, Channel 3, Battalion of Saints,Wasted Youth, Chron Gen and ViceSquad.

Nine bands for $9 . The OlympicAuditorium is a big hall downtownwhere they have roller derby and

fake wrestling . By this place'sstandards, punks are a high-classcrowd.This show was timed to the minute.

Each band was alloted 25 minutes toplay . The stage crew would watchtheir watches and count down to thelast minute . One band was threatenedwith non-payment if they played anextra song . The band changeoverswere the fastest I've ever seen, though . They only got a medium-sizedcrowd, which looks small in such ebig place . Nine bucks is a lot ofmoney no matter how many grou psthere are.I was an hour late and had already

missed two bands . Lost Cause fromOrange County had just started whenI came in . They played loud andfast, with an active singer and acrazy drummerShattered Faith was next-another

band I was looking forward to seeingfor the first time . They startedwith one of my favorites, "AnotherDay Passes" . I was disappointed, though . "Another Day Passes" (whichcan be found on the "Future LooksBright Ahead" cassette compilation)is what I would call a "pretty" punksong . I don't mean that as a put-down . It has a pleasant riff andharmonious backing vocals . "Pretty"is the only word to describe it.They have a very distinct sound-especially the grindy rhythm guitarwhich underlies the higher lead.

Channel 3 opened with "I've Got aGun" off their new import single andplayed a lively set featuring suchgoodies as "Wet Spots", "Mannequin""Manzanar ." Since they have a hitalbum someone made a crack about thebassist's "new Mercedes" . Consider-ing Posh Boy, that is rather doubt-ful . Good fun from the boys fromCerritos.Chron Gen played medium speed pop-punk-whatever . One local Oi boicalled them a "bunch of rich kidswho are just sucking you off foryour money ." A minute later I sawhim jumping around the pit-I guesshe didn't mind being sucked off.

I was beginning to feel bored whenon come the Battalion of Saints fromSan Diego . From first note to lastthey played at full power . The sing-er is this big guy with bangs whonever stopped moving and sang everyword at full shriekow is + '

Then we started having fun . L .A.punks, in their never ending searchfor something new, are bringing backthe pogo, perhaps in honor of theEnglish band (do they still pogo inEngland?) . Now, a guy will jump upand down as high as he can and peo-ple standing next to him will holdhis belt and propel him even higher. With this human trampoline, thelightweight guys end up pretty highin the air . It may sound stupid, butwhat-the-fuck, it was fun . ViceSquad finished with "Last Rockers",which really got the crowd going. For their encore they reprised "Outof Reach" and did "EMI" . A fun set.I was able to leave the show feelinggood.

For a show of this size and lengththere was little stage diving butfortunately, few fights . The slam-mere were more interested in havingfun than throwing punches.

This is Boston . ..Boston's hardcore scene is young

in comparison to others, but thegroups that surfaced in the pastyear are not to be denied their say.Society System Decontrol is the ori-ginal hardcore band from Boston andthrough some of their efforts we norhave a strong scene . Although theclubs generally refuse to book"punk" acts, there have been a goodnumber of shows in alternativespaces . One such club-Gallery East-exists, but it takes a good amountof money upfront to reserve it . Thehall is completely open for slam-ming, there is no alcohol or drugs, and most importantly, cops do nothassle the kids . Many of the localbands (hardcore and otherwise) havedone shows there with success andsome out of town acts, like TSOL,Minor Threat, Government Issue, andDouble 0, have also played.

For bands Boston cannot be better.55 Decontrol burn with excellence;Gang Green is the fastest, thrash-able trio alive ; The Freeze (on thepunk scene since '79) offer well-structured songs without lackinganything in the thrash attack de-partment ; Jerry's Kids blare whenthey get a chance to play ; theF .U .'s are the best performers thisside of the world ; and the Proletar-iat pump up a British-type soundwith great style.

Four new bands have emerged withinthe last three months to assure thatthe scene does not get stale . Dys

blend great humor with incrediblespeed ; Negative Fx and the MightyC .O .'s are both immobile as far aslive gigs go, but they both arequick and on target with theirsongs . Deep Wound, who live in Wes-tern Mass. and have not yet playedin Boston, have a demo of gnarlystuff that must be seen soon. Addingone to the list, 007-local faves ofeverybody-play infegtious dance rhy-thms . There it is . . .Boston:

Shred Editor,FRONTAL ASSAULT

District of Columbia

Two, maybe three shows a month, that's it . D .C . has lots of bands, lots of kids, and lots of spirit, but nowhere to play . The only club,9:30, may do one or two shows amonth, but that isn't consistent andlocal bands aren't usually included.Fucked as that may seem the manage-ment is actually very cool, but theydon't feel they can deal with theamount of people and aggression theshows bring . It is only out of afeeling of responsibility to ventsome of the most legitimate and im-portant scene D .C . has to offer thatthey do anv shows at all.

There are occasional hall-gigs andeven fewer parties, but they are al-most always hit and run.The last show was at the Old Mill

(an actual millhouse) . It got bustedbut a few bands did play . NEGATIVEAPPROACH were incredible . MEATMENand NECRO'S didn't get to play butwere great in Baltimore . Newcomers,WHITE ZOMBIES are the first of theprogressive bands (you know, "evolu-tionary post punk") . As much as Ihate their "better than thou" atti-tude they did a fair performance.Mostly simple chord progressionswith a sax thrown in for the artytouch.Another new band, SOCIAL SUICIDE,

were great, considering that theyonly practiced with their new drum-mer, Danny (ex-YOUTH BRIGADE), oncebefore . Someone told me that theirmain goal in life was to outdo DIS-CHORD, but I don't believe anyonecould act that stupid.

Speaking of stupid, HATE FROM IG-NORANCE had better be good . I havenot seen them, but in a local 'zinethey boasted that they have a lotmore "musical orientation" thanother D .C . bands . They said thatmost D .C . bands are "shit ." Prettytough words for a band that has beentogether for less than 4 months andonly played one show . Either they'regood, or they're assholes.Catching the rays on the Florida

beaches, are the boys from DOUBLE-O .

They're on a mini-tour, also playingNorth Carolina. Their new guitarist,Jason, is great.Other guitarists in the news:

Chris Caron from DEADLINE is leavingfor college, which is the end ofthat band . Pete Murray of ARTIFICIALPEACE is due back from Germany any-day.

On the record front, IRON CROSS' 4song ep should be out on SKINFLINT/DISCHORD as of this writing, as wellas the 1p with FAITH and VOID.Ending on a said note, BLACK MAR-

KET BABY has called it quits . Whilemany new punks die not like them, they've been around since the TEENIDLES days and were feel fcr themost aggressive bands in the area.None of their recorded stuff reallycaptures the full-on pump that theyput out live. ("Asking the ques-tions, but not hearing the truth, living on dreams, America's Youth" --BLACK MARKET BABY) . You don't knowwhat you've got til it's gone.
