Kit’n’Kaboodle was founded in 2004 by Sallyanne McCrory to provide people with affordable bespoke clothing.

Since leaving University the brand has continued to grow: Dizzy Rascal, David Cameron and various Dubstep DJs have all had custom hoodies made for them.

We dragged Sallyanne away from her sewing machine to ask her a few questions about KnK and how Mr.Lacy ties in with her clothing line.

How does your bespoke hoody process work from start to finish?

My customer will give me some ideas of what they want on their hoody. I will then draw up a design on paper and give them a quote. From the initial design, the customer can change anything around. Once they are happy and they approve the design I get to work!

If the customer wants a print I go down to the Factoryt4 workshop in Leeds, where I make a screen up ready to print the design onto the hoody. Once the print has

been done I add anything else they want on it, like stitching and secret pockets. Then lastly, I thread the Mr.Lacy ‘Fatties’ lace through the hood.

Do any shops stock your hoodies?

I don’t sell my hoodies to clothes shops as I like to keep them individual.

How did the ‘Hug a Hoody’ for David Cameron go down?!

I received a letter from Downing street, saying that the Prime Minister would like to thank you for his hoody and good luck for the future.

Page 27: Mr.Lacy x Selfridges Zine

That was pretty cool!

How did you find out about Mr.Lacy and how they could help you with KnK?

I stumbled across Mr.Lacy whilst on the internet looking for large fat laces. My customers love the large laces and they are a great selling point for my hoodies.

As my business grew, I needed to get better quality laces, so was so pleased when I discovered Mr Lacy!

Do you always use the same colours and styles?

I only use Fatties laces

because thats what people want and you can’t get them anywhere else in that quality.

It’s nice to also have the option for my customers to choose other styles and colours from the website if they wanted something different.

How does using Mr.Lacy enhance the KnK finished product?

They help to make the hoody what it is. Without the laces the hoody would still look cool, but it just makes them stand out more!

stand out more!”

Caliroots store opened it’s doors in Stockholm in 2003, focusing on brands with a Californian vibe.

Since then, Caliroots has expanded to four shops in the same street, specialising in Streetwear, Footwear, Skateboarding and Premium Goods.

Cali can be described as a grown up skate-limited concept, with most of its brands imported directly from the USA and Japan.

Earlier in the year, Caliroots did a collaboration lace with Mr.Lacy that was offered

to their customers through their Streetwear store.

We caught up with Per to talk Caliroots, Stockholm and collaborations.

And by the way, yes they do ship orders to the UK!

For the benefit of people in the UK who haven’t heard of the shop, can you give us a background on Caliroots: Who you are, when you started and the kind of brands you stock?

Caliroots was started eight years ago in Stockholm, Sweden by Andreas Koschnike and Per Norell. The concept was to make a store based on a Californian vibe and lifestyle.

Today we have four stores in Stockholm and the webshop Caliroots.com, which covers the rest of the world.

What do the different shops specialise in?

The four stores are all in the same block. Cali OG stocks steetwear, Cali Skate Store for skate product, Six Feet Down is a sneaker store and The C Store specialises in premium goods.

Tell us about the streetwear scene in Stockholm and Sweden.

The scene in Stockholm is quite small but well informed. Swedish people travel all over the world and information travels extremely fast on the internet.

“Our fastestselling

lace ever!!”

Page 31: Mr.Lacy x Selfridges Zine
Page 32: Mr.Lacy x Selfridges Zine

Stockholm is also a base for many clothing businesses, for example H&M and brands, such as Acne Jeans and WeSC.

You did a collaboration lace with Mr.Lacy. What was the idea behind it?

We did a black and a white lace with a Cali x Mr.Lacy logo on. I guess it was a response to all the crazy collabos out there. We made it so simple and made a big thing about it, just for the fun of it!

How did you go about choosing the colour?

If you only need one extra set of laces then you go for white: That’s what we chose.

How did it go down?

It’s our fastest selling lace ever!!

Have you done collaborations with other brands?

Yes, we just released a limited edition Winter boot together with Canadian brand Viberg.

Any plans to do anymore collaborations with Mr.Lacy in the future?

Yes, we have some great new ones, but they are top secret!

“As we progress through life the memories of our youth are disturbed by our realisation of the troubled world we live in.”

Jon Lawrence’s Classic Sneaker collection focuses on childhood memories that are preserved as three dimensional objects; robust, tactile and purposefully imperfect.

Jon’s work has been exhibited in galleries such as the V&A and Royal College of Art London, and in such publications as Spaces Magazine and Design Arts Magazine.

“I contrast

my laces

You say your work is influenced by your childhood memories. Can you tell us about your childhood sneaker collection?

I think everyone has a pair of sneakers that they remember as their favourites. Mine were without doubt the Nike Air Max 87z, although in my very early days as a BMX fanatic I always had a pair of Vans or Airwalks.

Tell us about your most recent exhibition and the work you showed there?

My most recent exhibition was Kicks and Canvas in

April 2010 in London. A selection of artists were given a plain pair of classic sneakers to customise. I used my pair to cast them in porcelain with real laces complimented with a ceramic ghetto blaster. They were shown alongside artists including Goldie, Dan Baldwin and Jon Burgerman

Could you explain the casting process you use?

My casts are made from plaster of paris. I make a mould of an object, which can then be used to produce several clay replicas of the original. I hand paint selected

Page 37: Mr.Lacy x Selfridges Zine

against my

glazes.”glazes to create wild colours, contrasting them with Mr.Lacy laces.

How did you find out about Mr.Lacy, and how do they tie in with your sculptures?

I sell my products at the highest quality and my search for laces ended at Mr.Lacy. The quality and wide range of choice is unrivaled.

Why use real laces in the sculpted shoes instead of casting them too?

All my sneakers have cast laces underneath the real ones. One day I started to drill holes and use actual laces.

How do you go about selecting the styles and colours used?

I love light blues and baby pinks, but generally I try to contrast the laces against the glazes. I mainly use Fatties but recently I have used some Flatties with my hand painted series.

What are you working on at the moment?

I am currently in talks to produce a range that will be manufactured and sold on the high street. I will soon have a showcase at SIZE in Leeds.
