NOTES FROM THE MUSIC ROOM:

The music room here at MPV is a busy place lately. Students are constantly coming in during nutrition

breaks to practice for The MPV Music Cafe and The MPV Steel Pan Ensemble. Throughout the year there

will be many different ensembles your children can join: Ukulele, Guitar, Bucket Drumming and Vocal.

There is a fantastic video by TED-Ed (part of TED talks) that explains current research on the brain and music. It is called

How playing an instrument benefits your brain - Anita Collins. You can search that in Youtube, or go to this website:

News from the Library December 2014

What a great month of reading at MPV Library! It’s always so rewarding to see our

students visit often and choose books that are “just right” or a “good fit” for them.

Our partnership with the Brampton Public Library continues this term with our Grade 1s.

Our Grade 1 students have been enrolled in a reading incentive program designed to help them use the early

readers section of the library both at school and after school when they use the library with their family. Once

the program is completed, the students will be invited to a “Reading Party” at our library.

There are many other exciting events being held here at MPV Public Library in December. On Thursday, Decem-

ber 4, 2014, students aged 7 – 12 years are invited to join in the “Dork Diaries Meets Diary of a Wimpy Kid”

event. Then on Tuesday December 23, for students 6-12 years who have a great imagination and love lego -

Legomania will be held at MPV. To find out more please check out the Public Library website www.bramlib.on.ca

Also remember to use that website to check your child’s account regularly to ensure books are returned on time.

Lastly ... an important reminder – children should only be at the Public Library after school hours under the

supervision of a parent or guardian. The Brampton Library cannot be responsible for their safety. Thank you for

your cooperation.

Until next month, happy reading to all!

MPV Twelve Days of Giving

Did you know that the Christmas holiday is one of the busiest times for food banks in our area? To help, MPV School community is conducting a food, hats and mittens drive.

Give the Gift Of Warm by sending in new hats, mittens and scarves for our “Mitten Tree”. This will be our 4th season donating to children in need.

We are accepting non-perishable food items drive is scheduled to begin December 1st and will run until December 12, 2014. Your generous donation will go to Knights Table. Did you know that more than 1800 families and individuals get help from the Knights Table? 40% of them are children. Knights Table serves warm cooked meals to low income and homeless people. You can help by donating non-perishable food items. Please help to fill our FOOD TRAIN!

MPVPS Intermediate Girls Club will be holding a Bake Sale on Friday, Dec 12th. Proceeds go to Free the Children Organization.

Thank you so much for supporting your school community during the festive season!

iWalk Wednesday

As you are aware, we have partnered with Peel Public Health to introduce a new program at MPV this year called iWalk Wednesday. Each

Wednesday, teams of teachers meet students in the community and walk with them to school as a ‘walking school bus’. Classroom

teachers also keep track of how many students in each class walk to school that day. The class that has the highest percentage of walkers

wins the prestigious ‘Purple Shoe’ trophy. Congratulations to Ms. Desai’s grade 6 class who were the winners for the month of October!

We have been emphasizing the health benefits of walking to and from school. We also encourage parents to leave their cars at home to help

ease congestion and keep the streets around our school safe. A big thank-you to the MPV staff for your commitment to this program and

congratulations to all of our students who have participated. Keep walking!

November 13, 2014

Dear Mount Pleasant Village Families,

As you may know, in recent years, we have experienced tremendous growth in many areas of Brampton.

This has had a significant impact for many school communities. In response to this growth, the Peel board

is constructing a new school that will result in a boundary change that may affect where your child attends

school in September 2015.

The new elementary school, tentatively named Mount Pleasant #2 Public School, is scheduled to open in

September 2015. The new school will help balance enrolment between schools in our community.

The attached map shows the boundary changes approved at the Regular Meeting of the Board on

October 28, 2014.

Effective September 2015, students living in the area outside the boundary line will be directed to

Mount Pleasant #2 PS for grades K-8.

Students currently in grade 7 will be given the option to remain at their current school for grade 8.

Siblings of these students may also be permitted to remain at Mount Pleasant Village. Please contact

your school principal, Denise Ingoldsby, to discuss this option.

If you have any questions about the boundary changes, please feel free to contact me at 905-451-2862 or

your school at 905-495-8778.

Sincerely,

Mark Haarmann

Canada Safety Council recommends the following tips for staying comfortable and preventing hypothermia when working or playing outdoors:

Wear a warm hat—most body heat is lost through the head. Children should keep an extra hat at school.

Protect your feet and hands. Wear loose waterproof boots. If the boots have liners, carry an extra pair to replace damp ones or take an extra pair of socks. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Carry an extra pair of mittens to school, on outings, etc.

Wear layered clothing. Layers allow warm air to stay trapped around the body.

Prevent dehydration and exhaustion, which can lead to hypothermia. Drink plenty of fluids and pace yourself when doing vigorous activities.

Stay fit by exercising and eating well—people who are fit are less susceptible to hypothermia.

If you stay indoors, avoid moving from a hot environment to a cold one. Excessive sweating caused from an extreme change in temperature increases the risk of developing hypothermia.

Eat high-energy food such as nuts and raisins.

If you are travelling (on the road or in the wilderness) carry emergency supplies.

Register for French Immersion by Jan. 30, 2015

Are you thinking of registering your child for Grade 1 French Immersion (FI) for the 2015-16 school year?

Registration for Grade 1 FI for the 2015-16 school year will be available online at www.peelschools.org/French as of Monday Nov. 24, 2014 at 9 a.m.

The deadline to register is Friday, Jan. 30, 2015 at 4 p.m. Registrants after that date will be put on a wait list.

The FI school for our area is Ingleborough Public School. The phone number is 905-451-4430.

Registration process

A grade 1 FI enrolment cap is in place. This means that a specific number of spots are available for students entering grade 1 FI. If the number of students registered by the deadline exceeds the number of spots in grade 1 FI, a random selection process system will be used to identify students gaining entrance into the grade 1 FI program.

All students who make the registration deadline will be placed in a random selection process and assigned a rank using a computerized random selection process. Spots are not assigned on a first come, first served basis. Once students have been assigned to all available spots, remaining students will be placed, again in rank order, on the school's waitlist.

Some students will be automatically placed in grade 1 FI. To find out if your child does not need to participate in the random selection process, and for more information about the random selection and waitlist processes, visit www.peelschools.org/French.

Visit the Peel board website—www.peelschools.org/French.

The programs can only run if there is enough interest among families.

Important information about immunization

In order to attend school in Ontario, your child must have an up-to-date immunization record. When you register your child for school, you will provide copy of your child's immunization record and the school will send it to Peel Health. After registration, keeping your child's records up to date is your responsibility. Peel Health reviews immunization records regularly. Students who are not completely immunized and do not have a valid exemption may not be allowed to attend school.
