A 5-Day Grooming, Riding and Horsemanship Program. Session 1: July 3-7

Session II: Aug.14-18 Ages 4 year and up

This unique program provides an exciting and inexpensive introduction to the wonderful world of equines in a fun-filled, non-

threatening atmosphere. Small groups of 4-6 children are formed ac-cording to age and prior experience-if any. After reviewing Safety Rules,

materials previously covered and learning a new subject matter, participants are as-signed their size-related pony or cob and each small group works under the tutelage of qualified instructor. Some of the horsemanship matters covered include: Safety on and around horses, Basic Anatomy, Equine Senses & Body Language, Grooming, The Tack and the Harness, Driving the Miniature Horse, English and Western Rid-ing, Barn Management and Careers in the Industry. Participates also get to shortly ride or drive their charges 3 to 4 times during each Session. This program enhances teamwork and self-esteem while helping develop a genuine appreciation and respect for the animals. Course material is provided. A winner by many Furlongs, this program tends to book early. Children must bring strong hiking shoes, jeans/sweat pants, a bicycle helmet, fluids and, on Friday, a carrot!

VOLLEYBALL CAMPAugust 7- August 11, Ages 8-15

This week long volleyball camp will teach em-phasis on basic volleyball skills and mechanics.

The camp includes the rules and game protocol, individual and team skills, informative mini-lectures, drills, games, contests, tour-neys, give-aways and prizes. The camp instructor, Karen Hegedus is currently the Head Coach at Spring-Ford High School. She in-troduced the volleyball program there in 2002, and has over 7 years of coaching experience. Coach Hegedus camp philosophy is to in-struct each player in a positive environment and give him or her the knowledge of the sport of volleyball.

Lower Providence Township will be offer-ing a NEW tennis program for the 2006 summer season. The director of the camp will be Alex DeCecco who is the Head Teaching Pro for Kinetix Sports Club. Alex DeCecco is PTR cer-tified with over 25 years of teaching experience. He coaches the Lower Providence 4.0 ladies USTA team, Jr. travel team at Kinetix Sports Club, Bux-Mont & USTA teams at Kinetix Sports Club. He is a former ranked Middles States player in singles, doubles & mixed doubles, a former 5.0 USTA player, and was the #2 singles player at East Stroudsburg University. He will bring a professionally trained staff with him to in-struct the summer sessions.

Skyhawks newest program for 3 and 4 year olds helps children fine-tune their motor skills in soccer, baseball and basketball. No pressure, just lots of fun while these tiny athletes learn the basics through unique Skyhawks games. Our Tiny-Hawk coach-ing staff is trained to meet the special needs of young children. Our staff is committed to creating a positive introduction to sports. Children must be potty-trained to attend. Pull-ups are not allowed. Participant-to-coach ratio is approximately 8:1. (parents are required to stay at the program) Tiny-Hawk par-ticipants dress appropriately for both inside and outside sports activities.

The Mini-Hawk Camp promotes a phi-losophy of fun while learning soccer, baseball and basketball, in a day pro-gram setting. The result is a program that ap-plies teaching methods aimed at young athletes, with more individual attention and elementary sports skills. This camp helps eager minds explore three different sports without the pressure to choose one over another. Each camper should bring shin guards and a filled water bottle. The camp will break down into individ-ual skills, catching, passing, de-flagging, offensive and defen-sive strategies. The action-packed week finishes with a flag football playoff! From Fern Fronds to Fairies, Polliwogs to Pinecones, the children visiting the Nature Wizard’s World of Secrets will discover a Grand and Glori-ous assortment of colors, textures and forms in the Woodland Meadow & Stream Provinces. Each day we explore new curiosities of Nature and collect ma-terials to fashion a craft of that experience. Families are encouraged to join us on the last day for a Sure-To-Be-Fabulous Puppet Show that the students themselves perform!

SESSION I: PHYSISTRY JULY 17 - 21, HALF DAY ONLYPhysistry What do you get when you combine Phun-omenal Physics and Crazy Chemistry ? PHYSISTRY! Discover what it takes to build your own skyscraper. Watch in amazement as you transform a plain fruit drink into a fizzy taste ex-plosion in your mouth. Because as a scientist you conduct you own acid base lab, making colors change right before your eyes. Investigate the wonders of electricity as you create your own electrical game. Come be a Science Explorer with us as we delve into the Phun-omena world of Physistry!

SESSION II: CRIME SEEN CAPERS JULY 24 - 28, FULL DAY ONLYScience Explorers has teamed up with an FBI agent with 30 years experience and his expertise in Forensics to design this awesome new camp! Join us for a week of collecting evidence, documenting the crime scene, to making your own DNA profile and fingerprinting. Our Scientific Investigative unit will be trained and certified SEI Members (Science Explorers Investigators). Full day only.

SESSION III: S.O.S. SCIENCE OF SURVIVAL JULY 31- AUG. 4, HALF DAY ONLY Are you up for a challenge? Test out your island survival skills with this exciting camp. Learn how to make toothpaste from you ll never guess it, seaweed! Navi-gate the unknown, armed only with your wits and the daytime sky. Construct a solar oven and bake some delicious treats. Build a shelter with handmade adobe bricks and some imagination. Use your survival smarts as you adventure with us and gain some skills along the way.

SESSION IV: TAKE A DIVE AUGUST 7-11, HALF DAY ONLYCome dive into the world of Marine Biology and Oceanography. Dissect a real shark, participate in a fisherman’s challenge and bring to life genuine Triassic Triops and learn to care for them at home. Examine the anatomy of fish and make fish print t-shirts. Come face to face with some unique sea creatures such as squid, and learn to survive at sea with a homemade solar still. Jump right in and investigate these underwater sea adventures.

SESSION V: SCIENCE EXPLORER JUNIOR II (AGES 4-6) AUGUST 14-18, HALF DAY ONLYA week of fabulous hands on fun. Get elbow deep in botany,

oceanography and space. Let s bug out as we investigate our 6-legged friends. We ll be out of this world with different themes every day.

ROVING RANGERS NATURE SAFARI

August 7 - 11Ages 4-6

This summer, the Roving Rangers are on Sa-fari to discover the wildlife in the local park.

But to find them, we brush up on stalking skills so we can walk on little cat feet to the very home of underground tun-nelers, high-wire acrobats, and paddling pond-dwellers. To learn about how these animals are adapted to their homes, we will animate, insects, mimic mammals and brooksnoop for hidden water life. Each Roving Ranger receives an official Nature Safari Certificate of Appreciation.

JUNIORNATURALIST

OUTDOOR SOCIETY 2006

August 7 - 11 Ages 6 - 9

To the outdoors! The whippoorwill calls, the linden tree beckons and the katydid points the way. Discoveries await! And the Junior Naturalist Outdoor Society takes to the open trail in happy answer to the call. We are eyewitnesses to a Forest Under Construction, Underwater Breathing, and Min-eral Cookies in Process. We investigate migration maneuvers, habitat hideouts and creature features. We’ll cast tracks in plaster, test for water quality, collect specimens for study and release, and revel in the wonder and abundance of the Great Outdoors!

Junior Naturalist receives an Outdoor Society membership card and Certificate of Outdoor Investigations.

In the genius of creation we find inspiration for the best the world has to offer: unique strategies not only for living, but thriving-adaptations for eking our creative existences in spe-cialized niches and habitats! With Nature itself as our mentor, we’ll investigate and learn about camouflage and disguises (both honest and deceptive!) chemical weapons, echolocation, and air conditioning. We’ll trace the natural sources for the human concoctions of weaving and sewing, parachutes, paddles, floats and sails, powered flight, and even jet propulsion.

With Nature’s clever devices as a guide, we’ll explore the world-wide web-of-life for their evidence in use, play inventive games, recreate some of these natural innovations, and put our own creativeness to work on new inventions and solutions!

Plans are underway for improvements to the Parks and Rec-reation Department’s summer camp program. The changes are designed to enhance the quality of the program and to allow us to better serve the youth of our community.

In order to provide the best experience possible for all our campers, the camps are being divided into two age groups. Two sites will host campers 6 to 9 years old and two will host camper’s ages 10 to 13. The new system will allow our camp counselors to plan activities specifically geared to the youngsters at their sites. With age-appropriate activities and trips, campers will get the most out of their summer camp experience.

In addition, new trips and on-site events have been added to the Camp Perkiomy schedule.

Lower Providence Township will be hosting a car show on Saturday, August 19, 2006 at the Lower Providence Fire house from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event activities include DJ Dale Sher-ry Productions, food, drinks and a chance to see a wide variety of cars. There will be 20-vehicle class categories that will be judged by the car show participants that day, and the first and sec-ond place winners of each category will receive a trophy. Registration forms are available at the Township Building and on our website at www.lowerprovidence.org.
