The Lark Editorial Board is now accepting submissions from MM residents of original stories/narratives, poems, opinion pieces, informative articles, and photography for the fall edition. Written submissions, proofread and preferably fewer than 500 words, should be emailed in Word format (if possible) to Nancy Wynkoop at [email protected] AND to Ruby Howard at [email protected] by Friday, August 14 at noon. Please include the word LARK as part of your subject line. Photographs need to be sent in JPEG format. Poetry needs to be formatted just as you would like it to appear. Pieces longer than 500 words or requiring more than one page to publish will be continued on the resident website in a section known as "Lark Unlimited." If your submission is more appropriate for a season other than autumn, the Editorial Board may hold it for a future issue.

On page 11, of the summer edition of The Lark, the editorial staff challenges residents to submit an original Haiku poem inspired by Margie Davis's photo of the drooping sunflower. The rules for Haiku poems are simple: The first line has 5 syllables, the second line has 7 syllables, and the third line has 5 syllables. Have fun! We will publish eight Haiku poems in the fall edition of The Lark.

The SRS Staff and Landscapers are aware of the stressed maple trees in the Plum Ridge area and are

working diligently to correct the problem. At the moment, the trees which are most in need are being watered with irrigation collars and are being hand watered. This process is being performed 2 – 3 days a week. Bumgardner’s office has been inundated with calls, emails, and staff interruptions from concerned residents. We ask that if you have any concerns about the landscaping, please report them to the Front Desk, and the Management will address them with the landscapers as needed. Thank you, Siskiyou Retirement Services.

As many of you know, Terry Bateman was elected to the Rogue Valley Transportation District (RVTD)

Board of Directors in May 2013, largely as the result of a write-in campaign by Mountain Meadows residents. At the RVTD Board meeting last Wednesday, July 15.Terry was elected as Chairman of the Board.

As reported in last week’s Weekly Update, oboist Gabe Young, the youngest of the Young Family Trio, won the concerto competition of the National Symphony Orchestra’s Summer Music Institute (NSO – SMI) in Washington, D.C.. As a result, he will solo with the NSO - SMI orchestra and it will be streamed live on this Saturday, July 25, at 4PM Pacific time. (Note: the time is 4PM and not 3PM as reported earlier.) To view it, simply go to the Kennedy Center website, click on Millennium Stage, and either go to the live stream when he's performing or the video archive later. Gabe also won the audition to be principal oboe on the Mahler piece that will be after intermission! His concerto solo will be the second piece before intermission, and he won't play with the orchestra for the first piece.

The live streaming will be displayed on the 80” TV in the Mount Ashland Room on this Saturday, July 25, at 4PM Pacific time. Come early and settle in for a delightful concert.

From Monday, July 27 through Friday, July 31 the Birch and Cottonwood garages will be closed to allow

for pressure washing and painting on the east end of both buildings. No vehicle access to garages will be available during this time. Information regarding alternative parking options have been supplied to all Birch and Cottonwood residents. No storage units will be effected by the water.

A computer class on basic computer skills will be offered every Tuesday, from 3PM to 4PM in the Bear Creek Room. Due to limited space, classes are limited to 10 people only. Please SIGN UP for classes, at the Front Desk. Class topics will change each week. After the first half-hour training, there will be a Q&A session with one-on-one help.

Tuesday, July 28, is the next session with Apple Macintosh as our topic. The SRS instructor is Ruby Howard. Please fill out a Basic Computer Skills Survey at the Front Desk and return it to Weny. The survey is not mandatory, but will help us gauge what classes would best serve our MM residents. Hope to see you there!

Back in May, when we anticipated that the rollout of the CC&Rs was just around the corner, I switched

from doing “Lunch with Lola” to Q&A sessions on the new documents. As you know, we’ve encountered some obstacles in rolling out the documents, and in the meantime, I haven’t had an opportunity to chat with you, over lunch and hear your ideas and concerns. I’ve missed our time together. So starting Wednesday, July 29, let’s do lunch. I’ll plan to be in the Dining Room at 11:45AM on Wednesday every week at one of the community tables. Please join me to share what’s on your mind – or just to chat. Lola Egan.

Li Cunxin, of one of the most talented ballet stars ever to emerge from China, was born in a poor rural

village and taken to Beijing at age 11 to study ballet with Madame Mao’s political troupes during the Cultural Revolution.

While performing in Houston in 1981, Li defected. In exile, he has been Principal Dancer for the Houston Ballet and Principal Artist with the Australian Ballet. He’s now retired from ballet and has been able to visit his parents in China. Partially filmed—in secret—in rural China.

Those wishing to participate in the book discussion on Tuesday, September 8, at 1:30PM in the Jefferson Room are invited to read Being Mortal by Atul Gawande. This highly praised book tackles issues relating to end-of-life medical care. We have added a second book to read over this two-month summer break. Those who wish may also read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. This short but fascinating book is about the mystery surrounding the death of a neighbor’s dog told from the perspective of young Christopher Boone, who has Asperger’s-like issues. (The play adapted from this book just won a Tony Award for best new play.) We hope our readers will find another title to read this summer in order to help the book club with future selections. We have agreed on the following titles for future dates: October 13: The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri November 10: All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr.

If you were unable to have your photo taken for our MM Resident Roster, not to worry,– Picture Day is here again:

PICTURE DAY

Please come and help us fill our wonderful MM Roster. There are currently 44 wonderful missing faces that would make our MM Resident Roster complete! Are you one of them? Don’t be shy, your photo is wanted! Also, If you would like to have your photo taken, but cannot come on July 30; please call Teri Stember (541) 708-0434 to arrange an alternative time

Please be advised that there will be no watering on the parkway strips of Plum Ridge, Nandina, MM Drive, Great Oaks, or North Mountain turf. These areas are slated for turf removal this year.

On Wednesday, August 5, Rick Stevens’ crew will begin pressure washing the Birch building. It is anticipated that the entire project will take 3-4 days. Please make every effort to ensure that all windows and patio/balcony doors are closed. Also remove any items that you do not wish to get wet from entryways, patios, and balconies. In addition, any items that can temporarily be moved inside will enable the workers to get the job done more efficiently. If you need assistance, please call the front desk to place a work order. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

For 2015 the Mountain Meadow’s rowing team has been continuously beating past monthly records. The

August goal is to keep rowing forward with this accomplishment. August is typically a low rowing month, therefore a good daily goal is for the whole team to row an average of 20,000 – 25,000 meters. This can be achieved with 10 rowers, rowing 2,000 – 3,000 meters per day. For the month of August there will be a rowing

record sheet on the Fitness Center desk. Weekly results will be posted in the WU.

On Monday, August 3, at 6PM in the Mt. Ashland Room we will have an original play presented by the Thanks for the Memories Theatre Company (TFTM). That’s the group that brought us a fine musical presentation of Stephen Sondheim’s Company in May. This new play is entitled: You Are Weak, You Are Strong, and it was written by TFTM’s Artistic Director, Peter Wickliffe. It’s a three-person play and the cast has Peter (as Reficul) and brother and a sister Josiah and Mariah Wise (as Joe and Hope, respectively). If you attended Company here, you may recall that Josiah and Mariah commute from Brookings!

The play’s setting is largely in Joe's mind. Joe, a man of faith apparently at the end of his rope, has issued a challenge to a foe that he feels has tormented him for far too long, Reficul. Now Joe and Reficul come face to face and the chess match begins, the only problem is Reficul seems to have both all the answers and questions and Joe seems to be armed with anger, fear and doubt. In Joe's darkest hour a light appears in the form of Hope, an angel sent to aid Joe in his darkest hour, now with two voices fighting for Joe's mind and soul, Joe must decide whether he stands or falls. You Are Weak, You Are Strong explores the ever questioning mind and the spiritual battle that rages within that cannot be seen -- the good, the bad and the ugly. Since this is not a musical presentation, there is not a budget to draw from for this presentation. But the Appreciation Jar will be there. It is hoped that the residents will be generous in supporting this struggling group. There will be two acts with one intermission for a total time of a little under 2 hours. Anyone interested in helping with providing light refreshments during intermission should call Roy Sutton at (541)301-8762.
