Did You Know?Dogs are supposed to be on a leash.

I know this is not new news to any one of you, but anecessary reminder evidently.

The City of Bend has a Leash Law for all dogs (City code5.20.025 and 5.20.030).This includes Mt. High since we are in the City limits.(The owner or keeper of a dog shall not allow a dog toengage in fighting with other dogs, or harass, bark at,bite, threaten or injure a person or animal.)

We are seeing more and more dogs off leash in theWillow Creek Village. On April 10th at around 3:45pm a herd of 20 deer cameinto Willow Creek common area and within seconds oftheif arrival someone let their two dogs out to ch'ase thisbeautiful herd of animals. The dogs were off leash and inminutes they had the herd dispersed in all directions.

These poor deer were so spooked they didn't know whichway to go, so they tore through planters and lawns, doingdamage to both. Not the deer's ifault, not the dog's fault, but the fault and the responsibility of the owner of thesetwo dogs. Animals do what comes naturally to them anddogs chasing other animals is a natural instinct. Animalsdefending themselves is also a natural instinct. If the deerhad turned their attack on these dogs, whose fault wouldthat have been? This time, the only damage done was tolawns and planters, the next time will a dog be harmed orthe leg of a deer?

I know some homeowners get upset with the deer in theiryards, eating their flowers, or leaving their droppingsbehind, but this is a fact that comes from living in thisbeautiful area we all enjoy. Deer do not tear up lawnsor planters when just browsing; they do however, whenspooked by people or other animals.

Come on folksryoumoved into a neighborhood where -there are rules, please abide by them. Please be aresponsible pet owner and do what is right. We all loveour pets and with owning a pet comes the responsibilityof following these rules for every ones safety.

By Reader's Digest Editors

Many of us make our nutrition and diet decisions basedon the latest health headlines. But due to conflictingreports and rapidly changing data, following the newscan leave people confused about what to eat and whatnot to eat. Here are some common diet headlines thatcould lead you down the wrong path if you're not careful.

The news: "Red wine is good for tlie heart."

The wrong result: Drinking too much red wine.

According to U.S. News Health, an American HeartAssociation (AHA) survey found that "Most Americanshave heard that red wine has health benefits, but manydon't understand the need tolimit consTjmptioliT''~So howmuch red wine is good for you? The suggested amountis relatively low: about eight ounces for men and fourounces for women.

Advice: Invest in an inexpensive scale or use a measuringcup to figure out the amount of wine you should bedrinking—ladies, a half cup; men, a full cup. Whendining out, order a bottle and pour it yourself. Take theextra wine home—most states allow this now. Also, asWebMD.com cautions, "if you don't drink alcohol, theAHA warns against starting in order to prevent heartdisease, especially when you can take so many otherpreventive measures."

The news: "Reduce sodium from table salt."

The wrong resu/f: Thinking sea salt is healthier than tablesalt.

The same AHA survey that found confusion about wineconsumption also discovered that "The majority ofrespondents also mistakenly believe that sea salt is alow-sodium*altemative toiable'salt.'*1n fact it's not-andneither is kosher salt. As it turns out, though, table saltisn't the major criminal in the excess sodium problem."Processed foods such as soups, canned foods, preparedmixes, condiments and tomato sauce account for up to75 percent of sodium consumption in the United States,"U.S. News Health reports.

Advice: Ideally, skip both excess added salt and thehidden sodium In packaged foods. Look for frozenvegetables without any added sodium and low sodiumbroths. Many natural food stores carry lower sodiumsoups. When you cook, use herbs to flavor your food.Once you lower salt, you will begin to see just how saltyprocessed foods really are.

The news: "Eat brealtfast to lose weight."

The wrong result: Eating a huge breakfast.

Eating breakfast is good from a nutritional standpoint;eating a huge breakfast is not good. WebMD.com reportsthat one German study found that "people [eat] the sameat lunch and dinner, regardless of what they had forbreakfast." So eating more in the morning just meansadding on more calories, and thus can lead to weightgain.

Advice: Plan out your calories across the day so that youwon't be overeating at night or in the morning. Eat until, your satisfied, not until your comatose.

The news:heart."

'Darl< chocolate is good for your

The wrong result: Liberally indulging In all types ofchocolate in order to get in the "flavonoids," thusconsuming excess calories and sugar, negatingchocolate's beneficial effect.

Advice: Small amounts of dark chocolate have thehighest heart-healthy elements. Choose a chocolate witha low amount of sugar and eat small amounts. Sorry,Peanut M&Ms and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are out.

The news: "Olive oil is better than butter."

The wrong result: Eschewing reasonable amounts ofbutter for rivers of olive oil on everything. Olive oil stillhas 120 calories per tablespoon so pouring it freely willstill cause calorie overload—never heart healthy.

Advice: Remember this advice from Weight Watchers, "alittle goes'albhg way." Meas"iire"if by the teaVpobn andtry flavored oils to boost the satiating effect.
