Mount Defibrillator On Sunday 24 April, Sarah Cox successfully completed the London Marathon. She wrote to us: Hi all. Just wanted to update you and the village. I completed yesterday’s marathon in 4 hours and 24 minutes. Carrying the Cornish flag the whole way! I was pleased with this run as I had been poorly with a cough and only managed a handful of runs to train. It was my 8th marathon and my 4th London Marathon. Was a fantastic run and am

feeling good today! I also have two fundraising events coming up in Bodmin in Syds Bar (once called the Garrison Club) a quiz night and a bingo night. (keep an eye on the notice boards for details)

You can contribute to our defibrillator online through warleggan.net/heart, or by going to events organised by Warleggan Young Farmers, who are also raising funds for this cause.

OPERATON LANE CLEANING

Thanks to the few parishion-ers who volunteered and turned up equipped with brooms, spades and muscle to clean and tidy the lane to the church—well done, much appreciated.

TRAPPED IN A CHURCH ON A FRIDAY EVENING

It takes strength of mind to go to an organ recital in a church. It’s much easier to stay at home, isn’t it – just settle into a comfy armchair and watch TV, and any time you’re bored, you just push the button and switch channels, or pop into the kitchen to make a cup of coffee. No such joy for me on Friday 22 April. There I was, seven o’clock in the evening, trapped in a pew, preparing myself for two hours of organ mu-sic. I was near the door, but escape would be difficult. I felt for the 60 or so other people seated even further from the exit. But it wasn’t a bad evening at all. OK, it started with the Dam Busters march, a jolly enough tune, but it did sound a bit like a fairground or-gan; more of this and I wouldn’t make it to the interval. But then it got better. And better still. A wonderful selection of music, from Bach to Handel, Schumann to Fats Waller, and more than once I found myself drifting off, forgetting where I was, as Jonathan Delbridge brought out the best that our small church organ had to offer. What a range of sound we had, as our visiting organist took full advantage of the two keyboards, the foot pedals, and the variety of stops. On top of that, his introductions to the pieces weren’t dull biographies of long-dead com-posers but inspiring and often humorous facts that really did help us to enjoy the music more. So thank you for a great evening Jonathan, and thanks to those at the church who made it all possible. Chris.

CHURCH NEWS The Annual Parish Church Meeting was held at Chykest on Sunday, April 10th, and was chaired by Philip, who has now been with us for over six months. The only change is that Liz Lane, who is our Worship Leader, is now also Deputy Churchwarden. Our thanks go to all those who give help and support throughout the year, cleaning the church, providing flowers, tidying the churchyard, cutting the grass and coping with the unforeseen emergencies that tend to afflict a centuries old building. Our over-riding problem remains the state of the tower. We are still awaiting the result of our application for a grant. If unsuccessful then we shall begin piecemeal repairs, step by step as funds allow. The funeral of Mrs Dorothy May, widow of the late Denzil, took place on Thursday April 21st followed by interment in the churchyard. Our deep-est sympathy goes to all her family and friends. On Monday April 25th the ashes of the late Jean Worden were placed in the old churchyard. Jean was born in Warleggan; throughout her life she maintained close links with both parish and church and we shall miss her. Thank you to all who supported the recital by Jonathan Delbridge; it was a most enjoyable occasion and Jonathan later said he would be delighted to return! The event raised £170 for the Building Fund.
