Please give some thought to help you may be able to give, positions you may be able to fill such as treasurer, membership secretary, helping maintain our books and materials, putting together the newsletter…. There are exciting times ahead for the Society - we’ve accomplished a lot in the short time we’ve been around, so come along and have your say, and think about how you might like to be part of it! ... Dave will be facilitating a Workshop for us, a 'How To' on oral history. To be held at St Davids-in-the-Fields Church Lounge, at 202 Hillsborough Rd, Hillsborough at 2.00pm, Sunday August 4th. APRIL MEETING There was only a small turnout to our April meeting at St David’s in the Fields but we were delighted to welcome a group of folk from the Avondale Waterview Historical Society to hear Garth Houltham’s talk on the Cyrus Haley affair at the Pah Homestead. residential address of banker the Hon.

Thomas Russell (1830-1904) and family when

he died on 2nd

September 1904.2

In 1947 the

property was owned by Edward Agar Horatio

Nelson, 5th

Earl of Nelson of Trafalgar born in

1860 and who died in 1951.3

The property

appears to have been sold through themagazine CountryLife.

4  Some furniture  – an

antique table - was sold at Christies in the

early 1950s that was located in this building.5 

It stands today and appears to have in recent

years been associated with Ajit Sigh Kalirai

MBE (1927-2008) who was a Veteran athlete,

holding several British records.6

The 9th

Earl

Nelson, a plumber, died this year in March

2013.7

on Wednesday 10 July at the Fickling Centre

The meeting starts 10.00am and Lisa will be

speaking around 10.30am

THE MT ROSKILL WARMEMORIAL PROJECT

The launch of the project and designcompetition was held at the MtRoskill War Memorial Hall on MondayMay 27th.

There was only a small turnout, even thoughthe advertised guest speaker was Bill McKayfrom the University of Auckland School of  Architecture.Bill gave a background to war memorials inNew Zealand, Michael Wood spoke from theLocal Board’s point of view, and GarthHoultham gave a background to the project.There was a definite buzz in the air over justhow exciting this project will be for our area. If 

you know anyone who is currently studying or is a recent graduate of .... architecture,landscape, garden design, art.... let themknow about this opportunity. Copies of theentry information will be available at themeeting on the 9th of June.

P1749.5 “Provenance Probably acquired by William, 1st Earl Nelson

of Trafalgar, or Thomas, 2nd Earl Nelson of Trafalgar for the

manor house of Standlynch, nr. Salisbury, and by descent to

Edward, 5th Earl Nelson of Trafalgar, sold Woolley andWallis, 13-16 March 1951, lot 543, when acquired by the

present owner…. Lot Notes Trafalgar House was the name

given to the mansion of Standlynch, which had been bought

by a grateful nation in 1814 and bestowed on the 1st Earl

Nelson, brother of the victor at the Battle of Trafalgar. The

Nelson family retained Trafalgar House until its sale in 1947,

and its contents were used to furnish various houses,

including Normanswood in Surrey, the residence of Edward,

5th Earl Nelson of Trafalgar.
